[V] gets rolling with a spate of new shows

Channel [V]’s getting serious about increasing its value within the Star bouquet with a clutch of new shows.

After the AIDS concert on 1 December and the launch of its reality show Popstars, [V] is now planning to digress from its usual pop-n-roll content and get down to some serious talk. Its target this time is the modern Indian woman. A new half hour show What Women Want, to be aired from Christmas, will invite female celebrity talents to speak their minds and teach men a thing or two about women.

[V] is plugging the show as an exclusive platform for the ladies to lead and show the world why its no longer just a ‘man’s world’. The channel claims What Women Want is the only one of its kind that celebrates the modern independent Indian woman and provides inspiration to young girls to draw on the strengths of these ‘women of substance’. The first celebrity to appear on the show is actor Raveena Tandon along with new VJ Puja, who will also attempt to fathom the modern Indian woman’s tastes in music.

Raveena and those of her ilk who follow her, will have a chance to spread the mantra of their confidence and successes with respect to their careers, styles and relationships. The programme will be aired on Tuesdays at 8 PM, with repeat telecasts on Fridays at 2 PM, Sundays at 12:30 PM and again at 8 PM

And if What Women Want is a tad heavy for the [V] viewer, the channel has another show up its sleeve. Beginning 24 December, four times a day, [V] will take viewers on a trip in which featured guests will catch up with their first infatuations. [V] Crush will use email, letters, couriers, photographs on a search for the first crush. Orchestrated by VJ’S Purab & Kim, the countdown culminates in a meeting between the two involved. The show will use love songs as an integral part of the show.

Vijay TV launches with innovative campaign

The new regional language addition to the Star bouquet – Vijay TV – which launched its new improved programme line-up from 1 October, has had an extensive advertising and promotions campaign built around it to push its programmes.

To draw a parallel, the Amitabh Bachchan hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati was the pivot around which Star Plus pushed itself as a channel after going 24-hour Hindi. For Vijay TV that role seems to have been taken by the blockbuster serial Marumugal, with filmstar Kushbhu in the lead.

Floats with cutouts of Kushboo were taken out in Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem on 1 October.

As an initiative to proactively involve the viewers, girls distributed leaflets with bindis attached outside select temples in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem Trichy, Erode and other cities across Tamil Nadu. This activity continued until 2 October.

At Foodworld (a popular eatery franchise in the south) goodies were distributed to patrons. Some people fanned out to the local kirana (provisions) stores while others went knocking on individual homes in different localities.

And an innovative kind of promotion is being done through 250,000 phone lines across Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. Vijay TV is calling up telephone subscribers and playing recorded voice messages of Khusbhoo using an interactive voice recorder. In the recorded message she informs them about her role in Marumagal where she emotes the role of a daughter-in-law, and also urges viewers to tune in to the channel during her serial’s broadcast time.

Star confident that operators will accept new subscription rates

Reports of a concerted backlash from across the country to the 1 March increase in Star’s subscription rates appeared unlikely on Monday, with company officials confident that most cable operators would accept the Rs 30 monthly price tag on the Star bouquet.

However, reports that the Cable Sena of Maharashtra had scheduled a meeting for tomorrow (Tuesday) could not be confirmed. The Cable Sena is affiliated to the Shiv Sena, the party in opposition in the western state of Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located.

Senior Star officials said except for Calcutta and a few pockets, over 80 per cent of the rest of the country had accepted the new rate structure. There were some reports that operators in six districts in southern Karnataka were planning to black out Star from the 15th but that has been sorted out, the officials said. The problem actually related to mode of payment rather than anything else, it was pointed out.

But 30 cable network owners of north Chhattisgarh region of India are firm in their resolve to black out Star. The have vowed to remove all channels of the Star bouquet because the channel had “revised it’s subscription fees twice in the current year.” A statement put out by the operators said: “Moreover all cable operators are angry with the marketing policy of the Star TV as they were forced to subscribe to Star Gold channel by the dealers of Star TV, which is a costly channel with no ratings at all.”
