20 films on Buddhism to be screened at 5-day fest

NEW DELHI: Over 20 feature and short films on Buddhist philosophy and thought from seven countries will be screened during ‘Inner Path‘, a five-day festival of understanding Buddhist thought and philosophy.

Union Minister for Culture Kumari Selja will inaugurate the festival on 27 April at Azad Bhavan of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Council president Karan Singh and director-general Suresh K Goel will also be present at the event.

The inauguration will be followed by ‘Buddhist Sacred Dances and Rituals‘ by a six-member dance troupe from Sri Lanka.

Prior to the inauguration of the main event, the exhibition ‘The Greatest Journey of Ideas: Spread of Buddhism‘ – a select range of photographs of Buddhist Art in 19 countries by art historian-filmmaker- photographer Benoy K Behl will be inaugurated the same day.

Ten films by Behl are also being screened as part of the Festival.

‘The Inner Path‘ is being organised by the Network for Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) and the Devki Foundation and is the first International Buddhist Festival in the country of his birth.

The festival, which is expected to become an annual feature, has been conceptualised by film critic and NETPAC president Aruna Vasudev, and is being held in partnership with filmmaker Suresh Jindal, chairman of the Devki Foundation.

Vasudev said the features, documentaries, and shorts are coming from Bhutan, Argentina, Korea, Sri Lanka, China, Japan and India.

Renowned directors and film personalities from these countries will be present. They include director Yoon Yong-jin of ‘Hal‘, Srilankan film star Thumindu Dodantenna of ‘Sankara‘, ‘Amongst the Clouds‘ by Edward A. Burger; the documentary ‘Peace is every step‘ by Gaetano Kazuo Maida, and renowned director Hector Kumarasiri whose film ‘Abinikmana‘ will have its world premiere here.

NETPAC had organised a festival of films on Buddhism way back in 1995. Vasudev added that ‘Trishagini‘ by Azad Bhavan which was screened in 1995 will also be shown, apart from the ten films by Behl, and Im Kwon-Taek‘s ‘Come Come Come Upwards‘.

Behl said he had been documenting the history of Buddhism and had made 12 films on the subject.

Starting from 27 April and slated to go on till 1 May, the festival at the Azad Bhavan (Indian Council of Cultural Relations) will present Buddhist philosophy and aesthetics through various creative forms – a dance performance, films, an exhibition of photographs, and selected art works, discourses, discussions and debates.

NBA denies violation of rules as ICC threatens to sue

NEW DELHI: Though relieved at being allowed World Cup coverage of the final contest between India and Sri Lanka, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) reiterated that its members had scrupulously adhered to the NBA News Access Guidelines and the dispensation available to them under Indian laws which clearly must prevail over ICC’s unilateral actions.

Rejecting the ICC position that its Members had violated any Guidelines, NBA said its members had acted in consonance with the invariable practices followed in the past (including for ICC events), in the face of ICC’s attempt to deviate from standard accepted business practices prevalent in India.

Noting that the ICC had seen reason and understood the true nature of the India – Sri Lanka final match and restored accreditation to its Member Channels, NBA said this was “in large measure due to the constructive intervention of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, including the personal interest shown by Minister Ambika Soni, who has truly appreciated the sensitivities and rights of the Indian viewers”.

NBA said its members are responsible broadcasters and are conscious of the rights and obligations of the parties, including those of the ICC, broadcasters and the Indian public.

By restoring accreditation, ICC has also recognised that it must subject itself to the prevalent laws governing ‘fair use’ in the host country.

The members will continue to strive to bring to their large number of viewers a most enjoyable coverage of the event which has always been the principle driving force of the news broadcasters, NBA said.

In Asia, we have achieved a growth of 20 per cent.

How much does subscription revenue contribute?
We have recently launched two channels in India. We are in pay mode in India. The subscription revenue has just started to kicking in. Most of the channels in South Asia are largely free. In Southern Europe, we do not get subscription revenue at all.

What are the key markets in Asia for BBC?
From our commercial and advertsing point of view our key markets are India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan. We see huge potential in the Korean market, especially with our online product.

In Asia, we have achieved an ad sales growth of 20 per cent

Why did you zero in Mumbai as your first regional marketing centre outside the UK?
BBC World News wants to create a much more definite approach to new online and mobile products of BBC News and its consumers. India is a dynamic and an absolute key market for us. The regional centre in Mumbai will focus on the South Asian market.

After the launch of the first regional marketing centre outside the UK, will there be any change to operations in South Asia?
There will be key changes to the operations in South Asia, with a series of appointments for the regional marketing centre in Mumbai.

BBC Global News will bring together BBC World Service radio, BBC World News television, the BBC’s international facing online news services and BBC Monitoring.

All South Asian marketing, communications and audience insight (MC&A) activities will be managed from Mumbai. Vaishali Sharma has been promoted to head of marketing & communications, BBC Global News, South Asia.

Dezma De Melo, who was previously head of audience insight for BBC World, has been promoted to head of audience insight, BBC Global News, South Asia.

De Melo and Sharma will work across consumer and trade activities and will, for the first time, provide in-region support for World Service business development teams.

Are you making any changes in your programming mix this year?
BBC World News is now positioned itself as a tri-media news service, delivering international news and information across multiple platforms – TV, online and mobile. Editorially, BBC World News is looking to deliver more live up-to-the minute news reporting, across a broader news agenda. It will also focus on providing more in-depth news and debate, plus global and regional news, business and sports programming including the popular World News Today with Nik Gowing, and India Business Report which target the Indian market.

We plan to expand our family of World News Today programmes from five hours, to seven hours a day. In July, a new World New Today programme with Mishal Husain will be launched. Our weekends will be focused on delivering topical lifestyle and documentary programming.

A number of BBC programme seasons are also planned over the course of the year and will be broadcast across TV, radio and online.

    What about ad funded programming?
It is the advertisers’ creation and ideas that we further push as a funded programming. But in all such cases, the editorial rests with us. Ad sales team does not impose upon any story on the editorial; they only suggest ideas. After we receive all the entries for the ad funded programming, we select only six programmes which suit our programming code.

Which is your best ad funded programming?
Our best is World Challenge sponsored by Shell. This year we will be in our fourth season. In the fourth season, we have teamed up with Newsweek and Shell for the World Challenge, to identify and reward people and groups that bring economic and social benefits to their local communities.

This year each nomination must fall under one of the following categories: community welfare and enterprise; health and education; sustainable farming; energy; water and environment.
A panel of judges will then shortlist the entries down to the 12 best examples of community-based projects or businesses.

BBC World News will then produce six 30-minute programmes profiling the 12 finalists showing how their projects and businesses are changing lives. These programmes will be broadcast to the channel’s global audience in October and November, and the channel’s viewers will be invited to vote online for their favourite project or business.

Last year a record 942 nominations were received from 99 countries worldwide. Winning project T’ikapapa – a Peruvian project set up to bridge the gap between Andean farmers and the potato market – was presented with a $20,000 grant from Shell to further develop their initiative.

Would such programming have been possible for BBC to undertake without the ad fund support?
    No.

With pressure coming from commercialisation, what are the changes that BBC News has gone through recently?
There are no such pressures. Editorial and sales are two different entities.

How do you position BBC World News in an Indian scenario where there is a mushrooming of popular local news channels?
Our aim is to present a different and unique point of view. We do not want to put ourselves under pressure of becoming a market leader in India.

  • Last-ditch attempt on for cricket broadcast on DD, AIR

Last-ditch attempt on for cricket broadcast on DD, AIR

NEW DELHI: With talks breaking down between Prasar Bharati and Nimbus Sports on sharing the live feed of the India-West Indies and the India- Sri Lanka ODI series to be played over the next four weeks, the national broadcaster today indicated that it will make a last-ditch attempt in the interest of them viewers to call Nimbus back to the negotiating table.

Information and broadcasting ministry sources told indiantelevision.com that in case no agreement was reached, the government may issue an ordinance to implement the Downlinking/Uplinking Guidelines issued by the ministry in November 2005.

The guidelines make it compulsory for sports telecast rights holder channels to share the live feed of important sporting events with Doordarshan and AIR by entering into a commercial agreement. The terms provide for revenue sharing of 75:25 in favour of the rights holders.

Prasar Bharati said that negotiations which had been going on for two days had broken down in view of new conditions laid down by Nimbus Sports, the rights holders for the BCCI organized cricket events in India, which were unacceptable to the national broadcaster.

Prasar Bharati and Nimbus Sports had entered into an agreement in February 2006 for telecast of the India –England series. Prasar Bharati had preferred another agreement on similar lines. But the national broadcaster said Nimbus put forward new conditions – which deviated from the Uplinking/Downlinking Guidelines and were unacceptable to Prasar Bharati.

Nimbus suggested a 15 minute deferred telecast on Doordarshan’s terrestrial channel referred ‘AS LIVE’. Thus, people having Cable TV would get live feed on NEO SPORTS and those watching DD will see it 15 minutes later.

This proposal was straightaway rejected by Prasar Bharati CEO BS Lalli who said “it is unacceptable to divide the citizens into two categories – one getting to eat freshly baked bread and others stale stuff.”

“Equity and propriety demands that uniform clean feed of international quality is made available to all viewers,” he added.

Nimbus also suggested exclusion of Doordarshan’s free-to-air DTH – DD Direct Plus from the live feed sharing agreement. But the Guidelines cover DTH medium as well.

Prasar Bharati has been demanding sharing of feed to enable universal viewing of cricket matches. Doordarshan’s terrestrial channel – DD National – has three times higher viewership than the number one satellite channel in the country, according to the Indian Readership Survey 2006.

With no breakthrough, 55 million terrestrial TV homes, DTH households and cable homes without Set Top Boxes in CAS implemented areas will not be able to watch the Indian team in action against the Caribbeans and the Lankans.

Prasar Bharati had asked Nimbus Sports to at least allow broadcast of commentary on All India Radio to enable millions of radio listeners to catch latest score, but Nimbus said: “If there is no agreement on Television, there can be no agreement on radio either.”
