    Sony to be ahead of the curve in regional penetration: Kedar Teny

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks (SPN), in collaboration with Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM), is attempting to bring fans closer to the Commonwealth Games (CWG) with Hindi commentary on Sony Ten 3 channels and English commentary on Sony Six and Sony Ten 2 channels.

    SPSN senior VP marketing and OAP Kedar Teny said, “2018 is a watershed year for sports given that there are two multi-sporting events in the year in a build-up to the Olympics. People in India want to watch other sports and CWG is one such initiative.”

    In addition to more than 150 hours of live games telecast, SPN will also air more than 30 hours of highlights and repeats for viewers to catch up with all the sporting action in Gold Coast, Australia.

    India has excelled at the CWG, winning 75 gold medals and 215 medals overall in the last three editions of the marquee sports event. This year, expectations soar high with fans across the country inspired by SPN, send their good wishes for the Indian contingent with their #RangDeTiranga message.

    SPN is taking note of the regional sector. Teny said, “The interest and awareness for CWG is building in the country and the momentum is already picking up. The multi-sporting culture is beginning to evolve in the country. As we start seeing a sizeable regional population demanding content, we will be ahead of the curve at that time.”

    Viewers can also look forward to in-depth coverage of the games with a live studio show which features expert panellists like wrestler Geeta Phogat, shuttler Aparna Popat, shooter Anjali Bhagwat, hockey Olympian Viren Rasquinha and hockey player, Jagbir Singh. Raman Bhanot, Nikhil Naz and Gautam Bhimani will host different segments of the show, while sports columnist Ayaz Memon will provide his expert insights to the viewers.

    Indian athletes Anjali Bhagwat, Aparna Popat and Viren Rasquinha sent their best wishes and support to the 2018 CWG contingent with the #RangDeTiranga initiative.

    “The #RangDeTiranga campaign is SPN’s rallying cry that taps into the emotions of Indian sports fans and asks them to show their support for the tricolour. It brings alive our ethos to go beyond and cultivate a multi-sport viewing culture in India. Our intent is to bind the sports fans in a one game-cry ‘Rang de Tiranga’ and give them the opportunity to watch their heroes bring glory to the nation,” Teny added.

    Bhagwat, a professional Indian shooter, multiple gold medallist at the CWG said, “The mind-set and morale of our athletes is upbeat considering their high-level achievements so far. I am very confident about the success of our Indian team in the upcoming CWG.”

    Popat, nine-time badminton national champion said, “It’s a huge responsibility and at the same time a feeling of immense pride to represent the tiranga at an international multi-sports event like the CWG. I would like to wish the entire Indian contingent the very best and hope they emerge victorious. I am thrilled to be a part of the Rang De Tiranga well-wishing ceremony.”

    Former captain of India’s national hockey team Viren Rasquinha said, “The recent performance of the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams has been very promising. The CWG is a great platform for the teams to take their performance to the next level. Focus, self-belief, team-work and great team spirit are critical to bring laurels to the country. Rang De Tiranga is a great initiative by Sony Pictures Networks and it will surely encourage the entire Indian contingent travelling to Gold Coast.”

    Raw and Smackdown now available live in hindi

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) and WWE (NYSE: WWE) today announced that WWE’s flagship TV programs Raw and SmackDown will air with live Hindi commentary for the first time beginning tomorrow on SONY TEN 3.

    Fans can tune into SONY TEN 3 to hear the new announce team of Fahad Sheikh and Sandeep Iyer calling the action live in Hindi. SONY TEN 1 will continue to air Raw and SmackDown live with English language commentary. 

    WrestleMania 33 was the first WWE special event to air with live Hindi commentary. Since then, all WWE special events have aired with live Hindi commentary on WWE Network. Last June, Sony Pictures Networks India and WWE launched WWE Sunday Dhamaal, a weekly show in Hindi featuring the best of Raw and SmackDown plus exclusive features and interviews.

    Sony Pictures Sports Network to telecast the third season of Pro Wrestling League

    MUMBAI: The Pro Wrestling League (PWL), the world’s biggest wrestling league, returns to Sony Pictures Sports Network in its third season. The event will take place at Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi and will be broadcast exclusively on SONY ESPN, SONY ESPN HD & SONY WAH from 9th to 26th January 2018.

    PWL was instituted in 2015 and has successfully completed two editions. In its third season, Pro Wrestling league will feature a squad of 6 teams – NCR Punjab Royals (defending champions), Haryana Hammers, Mumbai Maharathi, Delhi Sultans, UP Dangal and Veer Maratha – with 54 players. PWL will create history as they present one of the largest contingent of Olympic wrestlers competing in a league. Keeping in mind the popularity of the tournament, PWL will present Olympic style Greco Roman Wrestling to give fans a chance to witness their wrestling heroes contending against the world’s elite in an international format in India. For the first time in Pro Wrestling League, wrestlers from China, France, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia and Egypt will be competing in the coveted league.

    The third season of Pro Wrestling League will feature two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, reigning Asian Champion Bajrang Punia and 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik among the other Indian stars. World Champions like Haji Aliyev, Helen Maroulis and Petroshivli Geno will be participating along with 10 medal winners from Rio Olympics and four continental champions.

    MUMBAI: Undefeated Indian knockout king, Vijender Singh is set to defend his WBO Oriental and Asia Pacific Super middleweight titles against African Champion Ernest Amuzu on 23 December, 2017 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) has acquired the exclusive broadcasting rights to this sporting event ‘Rajasthan Rumble’- WBO Oriental and Asia Pacific Super Middleweight Championship from IOS Boxing Promotions that will be telecast at 7.00 PM on Saturday,23 December, live and exclusive on SONY SIX (English) & SONY TEN 3 (Hindi).

    Earlier this year in August, SPSN broadcasted ‘Battleground Asia’ where Vijender defeated China’s Zulpikar Maimaitiali in a double title to win the WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental Super Middleweight belts. Vijender Singh 32, has enjoyed a great run in his fledgling professional career, winning all his nine fights of which seven were knockouts. He has played 40 rounds in his nine fights. In his last three title fights held in India, Vijender has won all three bouts including a knockout. Amuzu, the 34-year-old boxer from Ghana, has 23 wins under his belt including 21 knockouts out of 25 fights. The fight against Vijender will be Amuzu’s first fight in India.

    ‘Rajasthan Rumble’ will also feature Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Amandeep Singh who will take on Manoj Kumar from Punjab while two-time Asian Boxing champion, Kuldeep Singh will face Amrinder Singh from Haryana. ‘Rajasthan Rumble’ will also see participation from other young talented Boxers like Pardeep Kharera, Kuldeep Dhanda, Dharmendra Grewal and Asad Asif Khan.

  • Sony Pictures acquires telecast & digital rights of Hero Caribbean Premier League in six countries, starts today

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) has pocketed the exclusive broadcasting rights to the much-anticipated Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

    The league that has a fusillade of cricket stars such as Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Bravo, will commence on 4 August 2017 and conclude on 9 September 2017.

    Besides India, the league will be telecast live in the Indian sub-continent including countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives.

    Sony Pictures Network, that comprises India’s premier sports channels, has also acquired the digital rights for the tournament and will live stream the matches in Afghanistan over and above these six countries on its digital platform, SonyLiv.

    The tournament will be held across six scenic venues in the Caribbean and for the second time the fixtures will be played in Lauderhill, Florida, USA. This year the teams will include the likes of Jamaica Tallawahs, Trinbago Knight Riders, Tridents – Pride of Barbados, Guyana Amazon Warriors, St. Lucia Stars and St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots, all battling it out in an initial group stage format before progressing to the knock out matches.

    The opening match of the league will see St. Lucia Stars take on the Trinbago Knight Riders to be held at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium (named after the St. Lucia Stars captain) on 4th August at 6:30 a.m.only on SONY ESPN. The game that day will see the likes of Brendon McCullum, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson and Daren Sammy himself battle it out at the stadium. The remaining matches will be televised on SONY SIX & SONY SIX HD.
