MX Player, Red Bull & Smule hunt for India’s next rap superstar

MUMBAI: With the hip-hop scene in India fast evolving and artists from the country making their mark on the global stage, a new series gives the next generation of rappers a platform to learn from the best and hone their skills. An MX Original Series, Red Bull Spotlight, featuring beats from Smule’s hip hop music app AutoRap, is a nationwide hunt to discover and support India’s best emerging rappers, now streaming for free on MX Player.

Started in 2019 as a platform to discover India’s newest rap talent, Red Bull Spotlight is now a six-part series that will see eight rappers go head-to-head for the title. The winner will receive the opportunity to record a full-length album in a professional studio, a music video, an EPK and more, selected following a finale judged by the biggest names in Indian hip-hop – Divine, Naezy, Emiway Bantai and Dee MC.

MX Player COO Vivek Jain said, “We’re delighted to have partnered with Red Bull and AutoRap to bring alive the biggest battleground for budding rap enthusiasts in India. This three-way partnership presents as the perfect harmony of brands coming together for a bespoke integration and digital first content solutions, that we’re able to weave into stories or formats that can appeal to our large user base.”

Smule president Bill Bradford described Red Bull Spotlight as a launch pad for the next generation of hip hop talent in India. “We’re proud to provide the musical creation platform these rising stars can use to share their stories, and to serve as the backdrop of their art,” he added.

In the series, produced by Red Bull Media House and MX Player with Supari Studios and directed by Nisha Vasudevan, the finalists spend a week under the mentorship of some of the finest in Indian hip-hop, attending workshops and sessions, doing challenges and more. Mentors include Sofia Ashraf, Naezy, Dopeadelicz, Sez on the Beat, and D’evil.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the wide-ranging talent in the finale. I think that says a lot about the selection process and also about the quality of talent waiting to be discovered and given a platform in India,” said hip-hop artist Divine, who was a judge at the finale. “Red Bull has been supporting music and culture in many different formats right from before I started as well and up to now. Spotlight is another endeavour in that long line of platforms given by them in helping talent get discovered and work towards building sustainable careers for them.”

  • Snapchat taps into the TikTok market with ‘Spotlight’

Snapchat taps into the TikTok market with ‘Spotlight’

MUMBAI: Snapchat has rolled out its own version of the short video format platform, ‘Spotlight’, presumably for a slice of the TikTok pie in India. While the multimedia messaging app had launched the feature with its own dedicated tab in the app in November last year in 11 countries including the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia, it has only debuted it in India now.

Just when we thought there were too many players in the user-generated video content market, Spotlight entered the scene with a dedicated tab to the format in the Snapchat app. The videos – or Spotlight snaps, as they are referred to – surfaced in this section and can be up to 60 seconds long. To entice people to post snaps regularly, it will even pay creators to post viral content on the platform.

The new feature will piggyback on Snapchat's popularity in the market to gain new users and tap into the void left behind by TikTok’s ban in the region. However it will be competing with Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, MX TakaTak, Bolo Indya, Chingari, Roposo, Moj, to mention a few.

Snapchat’s transition into the short-video space is a clear recognition of the success of TikTok’s short-form viral videos. Instagram too had acknowledged the Chinese app’s popularity with its launch of Reels in August last year. However, unlike TikTok, Spotlight snaps won’t feature a public comments section, and users' profiles are private by default. Snapchatters can, therefore, shield their accounts from public view while still posting content in Spotlight. In fact, anyone can submit their snaps to Spotlight for others to view; you just have to tap ‘Spotlight’ when posting to send it to the section.

Snap’s ‘$1m a day’ program – where the company says it’ll divvy up $1 million between the most popular creators on the app per day – will also be available in India, celebrating and rewarding the creativity of local Indian Snapchatters and offering a chance for creators to earn a share of a $1 million daily fund. This means if someone has a particularly viral video, they might earn a large chunk of the $1 million pot. It doesn’t matter whether that person has a massive number of subscribers; the amount people receive is primarily based on unique views compared to other snaps that day. Users can continue to earn from their video if it’s popular for multiple days at a time.

The videos you’ll see in the section can be up to 60 seconds long and, as of right now, cannot be watermarked. That means people can’t just download their (or others’) viral TikToks and upload them to Snapchat. Snap is instead trying to encourage people to use its own creation tools and prevent monetisation fraud by keeping people in its app. Once you tap into Spotlight, you’ll see snaps programmed to what Snapchat’s algorithm thinks you might enjoy. Spotlight surfaces the most entertaining Snaps from the Snapchat community all in one place and will become tailored to each Snapchatter over time based on their preferences and favourites.

88th Academy Awards: Where and when can India tune in?

MUMBAI: It’s that time of the year again when movie buffs across the globe stay glued to their television screens to celebrate Hollywood’s best. Yes, it’s Oscar time! No matter, which part of the world you are in, if you have a flair for international cinema, the Oscars is a singular event you wait an entire year for and dare not miss it. That goes for the Hollywood fans in India as well.

The 88th Academy Awards will be held on 29 February at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood in Los Angeles at 5:30 pm PST. Those in India can catch the show live at the wee hours of the morning at 5:30 am on Star Movies and Star Movies Select HD.

And in case you’re not a morning person you can tune in again to either of the channels at 8:30 pm for a repeat telecast of the awards.

For the digital audience — be it early commuters, people who can’t be in front of a TV due to circumstances and even those who have long forsaken television — start flipping tables, Star India’s OTT platform Hotstar will also stream the Oscars live at the same time.

Hotstar will also let viewers catch the Oscars main event after 29 February with Red Carpet Moments, Thank you clips, high-points, best speeches as well as behind the scenes footage from 1 – 13 March.

Last to last year there was a general disagreement when Hollywood actor Leonardo Dicaprio failed to bag the Oscar for best actor for The Wolf Of Wall Street and his Indian fans took to social media to express their disappointment. This year, even as Dicaprio is yet again nominated for his performance in The Revenant, the expectation and anticipation levels are sky high.

Some of the movies nominated for the Best Picture this year are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room and Spotlight.
