Sports viewership grows by over 90% in the last 4 years: BARC report

MUMBAI: The sports viewership on television, with around 90 per cent of growth, has gained most in the last four years among other genres, says Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India in the yearly report of 2019. It was mostly dominated by cricketing events such as IPL and the world cup.

According to the report, the 2109 International Cricket Council's Cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan was the most-watched game between 2016-2019 garnering over 29 billion viewing minutes. The Indo-Pak match was one of the five events in 2019 that had garnered maximum eyeballs on the television screens.

“Within sports, cricket retains its numero uno position; live cricket pockets 58 percent of viewing minutes of sports broadcasts. Beyond cricket, the most-watched sports on TV are kabaddi, wrestling and football, and combined they corner 85 per cent on viewing minutes,” the BARC 2019 report reads.

Similarly, 2019 was an important year with respect to sports, especially cricket. The first-ever Pink Ball Test Match played in India was also a big draw; day one of the test match was viewed by 43 million people and clocked 2 billion viewing minutes.

The report also mentions that more than 70 per cent of rural India watches the kabaddi tournament, whereas at least 52 per cent of urban India gets entertained by the wrestling matches. Similarly, football gets more than half of its viewership from Kerala, Assam, Sikkim, and West Bengal.

India’s biggest domestic cricketing event, Indian Premier League, has only got bigger in 2019 since its inception in 2008. “In 2019, 424 million viewers, which is 51 per cent of total TV viewing population, watched live matches of IPL 12. It also showed that an additional 9 per cent watched tournament in restaurants, pubs and other such OOH locations.”

The top ten advertisers for IPL 12 were Vivo V15/V15 Pro, Mobile Premier League, Swiggy, Bjyus, Fogg, Vimal Elaichi Pan Masala, and Sprite, among others. However, this year, the IPL’s thirteenth edition seems to be in doldrums amid the rising concern of the novel coronavirus.

The 2019 marquee event ICC cricket world cup had pulled at least 509 million viewers at home and out-of-home, as 10 nations battled for supremacy. And, at least 2 million seconds of advertising featuring 192 brands played out over the tournament’s broadcast.

The tournament was in England and Wales, and was supported by top advertisers such as BJYUS, Disney, Puro Heathy Salt, Fogg, Phonepee, Kamla Pasand Pan Masala, Nissan Kicks, and Vimal Elaichi Pan Masala, among others. This sports event was only viewed the most till the time India was in the tournament. As India was out of the race in the semis, the viewership declined.

Despite viewership growth in the last four years, the sports genre has been ranked in the last position with a mere 1 per cent of total advertising volumes. genres such as news, GEC, and movies continue to account for over three-fourth of total ad volumes in 2019.

Similarly, ESP Properties, entertainment and sports division of GroupM India, in its report, had said that the overall sports sponsorship industry grew by 17 per cent to Rs 9000 crore, and for the first time ever, the on-ground sponsorship grew by 25 per cent to Rs 2000 crore.

  • How the 2019 Coronavirus has Affected the Sports Industry

How the 2019 Coronavirus has Affected the Sports Industry

The coronavirus is now declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Currently, there are now over 140,000 cases related to this. The virus has also caused over 5,000 fatalities. It has already spread to over 100 countries.

It’s definitely become a problem around the world and it also affects many industries. The sports industry is greatly affected by this too. Many sports events have already been canceled. March has always been a great month for many sports fans but for now, it’s become the month of the virus.

Major leagues from around the world have already made the necessary changes to help lessen the spread of the virus. From the NBA, the NHL, the IPL, to the EPL, here are the updates that sports fans should know about.

    The NBA

The National Basketball Association abruptly announced the suspension of the rest of its season this week. This is after it was found that one of the players of Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus. This happened just moments before a game began in Oklahoma City.

At first, the NBA was trying to avoid the suspension by only advising its players to avoid handshakes, giving the fans high fives and signing autographs with borrowed pens and markers. However, the confirmed case within the league changed things completely. The indefinite suspension of the basketball games within the NBA has started on March 12.

    The Indian Premier League

After weeks of waiting whether the IPL will be canceled or not, the Board of Cricket Control in India or BCCI has finally made an announcement about this. The IPL will still push through but instead of it starting on March 29, it will begin on April 15.

This announcement was reported on Cricket-Betting.in tips after New Delhi and Mumbai have already banned large gatherings for any sporting events. Even the two remaining one-day cricket internationals in India has been called off. People are also saying anyway that even if the I-PL pushes through on the 29th, people will most likely stay away from the stadium.

    The Major League Baseball

The MLB has already suspended the spring training indefinitely. The start of the season will also be delayed for at least two weeks. Instead of March 26, the opening day will happen on April 9. This is the earliest date, and so it’s possible that it will still happen later than April 9.

According to the MLB, “MLB will announce the effects on the schedule at an appropriate time and will remain flexible as events warrant, with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible.

It also explained why these were necessary. “Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our players, employees, and fans. MLB will continue to undertake the precautions and best practices recommended by public health experts. We send our best wishes to all individuals and communities that have been impacted by coronavirus.”

    The English Premier League

The EPL is also now suspended until April 4 because of the outbreak. The governing bodies for the leagues said in a statement, “Following a meeting of shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on April 4.”

The chief executive of the Premier League also talked about this. He said, “In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA, and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority.”

He added, “Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League’s aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so.”

The rest of the soccer matches in England are now also canceled. It was also reported that Arsenal FC’s coach, Mikel Arteta, and Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Ohio were found positive of the 2019 coronavirus.

Three Leicester City players and one Everton FC member are all on self-isolation as they are reported to have symptoms of the virus.

    The Masters

The officials of the Augusta National Golf Club have announced that The Masters will also be postponed. The PGA Tour, also announced that it was canceling several golf tournaments until the week of Masters, which is scheduled on April 9 to 12.

The Masters organizers said in a statement, “We hope this postponement puts us in the best position to safely host the Masters tournament and our amateur events at some later date.”

  • Sports industry a key to sports development in India: CII-KPMG report

Sports industry a key to sports development in India: CII-KPMG report

MUMBAI: KPMG under the aegis of CII released a report titled Business of Sports – Shaping a Successful Innings for the Indian Sports Industry. The report identifies key issues in the sports ecosystem and explores measures to develop a private-investment led sporting scenario in the country – one that helps imbibe a sporting culture and achieve the country’s vision of excellence in sports.

The report states that resource scarcity in India makes it difficult for the government to attain the above objectives and calls for collaborative efforts of both the government and private sector towards strengthening the sports ecosystem. Long term sustainability of commercial ventures in the Indian sports sector would require sustained audience interest driven by India’s winning performances at international sporting events.

Sports not only boost the youth and instil pride among citizens, but also facilitate social and economic development of a nation. Sports sector is seen to have a significant socio-economic impact worldwide contributing to 1-5 per cent of national GDP.  This can be achieved by building a sporting culture in the country.

However, in India sports is not recognised as an industry yet, limiting corporate investments except in cricket and a few other leagues. Being home to various upcoming leagues and the youngest population in the world, India’s sports sector offers tremendous growth potential.

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Secretary Ajit M Sharan, released the CII – KPMG report at the Scorecard 2014, CII’s National conference on Sports.

Earlier CII National Committee on Sports and Group (Asia) president and Coca Cola Company chairman Atul Singh highlighted Industry’s role of ‘going beyond Sponsorships and CSR activity and the need for a policy shift to recognize Sports as an industry’.  He said: “This would help actualise the India@75 vision for broad-basing sports in India, and promote excellence in Sports, by promoting infrastructure development, providing technical support for athletes, as well as grooming talented sportspersons”.

“Corporate funding in sports may be the answer to ignite sports development in India. The gestation period for realizing return on such investments may be long, but global experience shows us that it could be potentially rewarding”, added KPMG partner in India Jaideep Ghosh.

Global sports industry is estimated to be worth around $ 600 billion and growing at a rate higher than national gross domestic product rates around the world. While direct sports revenues are dominated by gate collections, sponsorships, media rights, the sports sector may comprise several segments such as sports tourism, sporting equipment manufacturing and retail, sports apparel, recreational sports, high school and college athletics, as well as associated businesses such as sports marketing, sports medicine, venues & infrastructure, hospitality and merchandising.
