Sony Pictures Television India & Isobar make spider-man fans tap into the multiverse

Mumbai: Sony Pictures Television India and Dentsu’s Isobar have launched a campaign to give the audience an experience of the multiverse, a physics theory that is barely known to the layman.

Through this campaign, the duo has created a multiverse on mobile devices to bring the essence of the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to the fans before they buy or rent the movie on the BookMyShow stream. For the record, the multiverse was a key part of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” for Sony Pictures Television India.

Isobar India has developed a website titled, Tap Into The Multiverse, where a single URL – tapintothemultiverse.com can be opened on different browsers to get an experience of different villain universes each time. The website is created to showcase the two universes belonging to the three villains – Doc Ock, Electro and Green Goblin.

One villain can be accessed with each unique browser visit, while the URL remains the same. The fans are further tested on their villain IQ with interactive questions for a more immersive experience. After this unique experience, the fans are given the option to purchase “Spider-Man: No Way Home” on BookMyShow stream and enjoy extra footage that has never been seen before.

Talking about the collaboration, Sony Pictures Television South Asia VP, sales and international distribution Sonika Bhasin said, “For a movie like this, the experience of the multiverse just leaves you wanting more. It’s a prelude to an experience that’s completed by streaming “Spider-Man: No Way Home” on BookMyShow stream. People want to not just watch, but also engage with the brand and experience it.”

Isobar India Group chief executive officer Heeru Dingra said, “It is just not enough to give the audience a taste of a film like this through a trailer. A unique experience is what Spidey fans deserve, and it’s what they got with Tap Into The Multiverse.”

Isobar India and Taproot chief creative officer Aalap Desai commented, “An iconic franchise like Spider-Man calls for an iconic idea to promote it. A simple question we asked ourselves was, why wait for the movie to get an experience of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man? Why not give fans an experience even before they stream it at home? That’s what we did with Tap Into The Multiverse.”

  • Omicron surge: Uncertainty prevails at theatrical box office worldwide

Omicron surge: Uncertainty prevails at theatrical box office worldwide

Los Angeles: With the boom in box office grosses from ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’ beginning to subside and the Omicron surge taking its toll, movie theatres worldwide are facing a sobering reality that the first two months of the 2022 box office could turn out to be a gloomy dry spell.

In the past week, according to TheWrap.com, Sony moved its next Marvel movie, the Jared Leto-led, ‘Morbius’ from late January to 1 April. Then, on Friday, Disney pulled the early-March Pixar film, ‘Turning Red’ from theaters entirely, instead of making it the third straight feature film from the animation studio to get an exclusive release on Disney+.

That means that the US theaters will soon be lacking all three of the major ingredients for box office riches at this time of year — holiday holdovers, Oscar contenders, and major new releases — with only the prospect of Sony’s Tom Holland action film ‘Uncharted’ on 18 February and Warner Bros.’ ‘The Batman’ on 4 March is on the horizon to lure audiences in large numbers.

Even prior to the pandemic, box office performances in January and February have been mixed. On one hand, films like ‘Hidden Figures’, ‘Bad Boys for Life’, and Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ found success with audiences in these early-year slots, combined with December releases like ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ and Oscar contenders like ‘La La Land’ to provide a solid start for the year. However, for the next four to eight weeks, the 2022 box office appears unlikely to see those levels of success play out again.

To complicate matters, Omicron is beginning to play havoc in Hollywood as a surge in cases is causing production delays. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, despite a rebound in film and TV production in late 2021, as the Covid-19 crises began to subside, the recent emergence of the highly contagious Omicron variant now threatens production output as studios push back work once again. “We’re not seeing the typical level of rebound of production,” FilmLA President Paul Audley told The Times. “We’re hearing from people who are asking to cancel or postpone their permits right now.” FilmLA is the nonprofit group that handles film permits for the Hollywood region.

The International Box Office faces similar yet unique challenges as the new Omicron variant causes concern around the globe. The new year begins as did the previous one, with cinema closures in several markets. Europe has been particularly affected, with Netherlands and Denmark in complete lockdown and restrictions in many others. Meanwhile, a slowdown in Hollywood productions due to Omicron could eventually hit the International Box Office’s bottom line.  Although Q1 is looking soft, some studio executives are hopeful that the overseas landscape, particularly in the northern hemisphere, will settle down by spring with moviegoers ready to return in Q2 with some normalcy.

A unique international box office wildcard, as reported by Deadline, is China. With a powerhouse 44 per cent of the 2021 worldwide box office haul, China has been more ornery to navigate than usual, notably not approving a single movie with a Marvel character in 2021, from Disney’s ‘Black Widow’ straight through to Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and having a huge influence on the International Box Office in the process.

In general, China appears to be putting the brakes on Hollywood. 2021 already saw fewer than 20 revenue-sharing movies allowed in, versus 30-plus in 2019. There are varying theories as to why this is happening, which include the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party, which put the focus on local so-called “propaganda” movies like the $900 million-plus grosser ‘The Battle at Lake Changjin’. There also appears to be the targeted blackballing of Marvel. Some believe it may be linked to Black Widow’s depiction of communism, while some think the slate of films was a no-go as years-old comments allegedly made by ‘Eternals’ helmer Chloé Zhao surfaced last year.

However, notable Hollywood titles that did release in China in 2021 include ‘A Quiet Place Part II’, ‘F9’, ‘Godzilla vs Kong’, ‘Dune’, and ‘Free Guy’. China also allowed films such as ‘Jungle Cruise’ and ‘Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins’ which had already been out elsewhere for months. In doing so, USC professor and China expert Stanley Rosen told Deadline, “They are showing that they’re not closed off, but they are telling Hollywood, ‘We don’t really need you and we will pick and choose for whatever reasons we want to’.”

Does it matter to China that it left potentially hundreds of millions of dollars on the table by not releasing the Marvel movies? While an oft-heard refrain is that China doesn’t care about money, it’s also said the country does care about cultural power. And, though it may be entirely capable of churning out local films that gross well over $500M at home, without Hollywood products, sources believe it will not be able to feed its ever-growing number of screens (currently 82,248 and eyed at 100K by 2025).

Rosen stated, “They don’t need Hollywood as much as they used to, that’s very clear. But, they want to be the number one film market in the world and want to show themselves as a global power and not close off. That includes film, so they need to have Hollywood products to show that.”

As both the Domestic and International Box Offices eye a hopeful Q2, uncertainty remains as Covid-19 (including the Omicron strain) and China appear to hold blind cards to handing 2022 a winning box office prize.

  • Disney inks massive deal with Sony to stream ‘Spiderman’ & other films

Disney inks massive deal with Sony to stream ‘Spiderman’ & other films

NEW DELHI: After months of see-sawing and multiple rounds of negotiations, Disney has signed a deal with Sony Pictures that will allow Disney+ to stream Spiderman and other Marvel properties in the United States after they play on Netflix. Disney revealed that it will also add a significant number of Sony films to Hulu, the subscription video-on-demand service fully controlled and majority-owned by The Walt Disney Company.

Apart from Spiderman, Disney has also acquired streaming rights of hundreds of Sony Pictures movies including Jumanji and Hotel Transylvania. Some other movies that will be included in the deal are Marvel's Morbius, Brad Pitt's action thriller Bullet Train, and the new instalment in the Bad Boys series.

According to the new arrangement, Disney will be able to stream Sony movies that include Spiderman and Venom beginning 2022. After the theatrical screening, these films will be streamed on Netflix for an 18-month period and will be later streamed on Disney+ or any other Disney platforms.

The development comes close on the heels of Netflix inking a deal with Sony Pictures earlier this month to stream the latter’s movies after the first window of theatrical release. Similar to the Netflix deal, the new pact between Sony and Disney covers only the US market.

The deal between Sony Pictures and Disney was wrangled by Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution head of business operations for ABC, Freeform, FX Networks, and acquisitions Chuck Saftler, and Sony Pictures Entertainment president of worldwide distribution and networks Keith Le Goy.

"This landmark multi-year, platform-agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels. This is a win for fans, who will benefit from the ability to access the very best content from two of Hollywood’s most prolific studios across a multitude of viewing platforms and experiences," said Saftler in a recent statement.

Keith Le Goy said, "We are thrilled to team up with Disney on delivering our titles to their viewers and subscribers. This agreement cements a key piece of our film distribution strategy, which is to maximise the value of each of our films, by making them available to consumers across all windows with a wide range of key partners.''

  • Sony Pictures Entertainment launches India’s first-ever programmatic OOH weather banners

Sony Pictures Entertainment launches India’s first-ever programmatic OOH weather banners

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures in association with Dentsu Webchutney launched India’s first real-time programmatically propelled digital out of home campaign – for its much-anticipated latest release Spider-Man : Far from home.

Traditional OOH advertising, which is either static or pre-set to rotationally run on digital screens has now become a blind spot for frequent passer-by's due to its redundant messaging for days. Sony Pictures along with Dentsu Webchutney used its programmatic expertise to serve dynamic creatives real-time on outdoor billboards, which were triggered by weather events, to make it contextually relevant to the viewers.

In-order to familiarise the audiences with the villains (the elementals) the campaign leverages the real time weather conditions to the show Spider-Man fighting them, on an outdoor hoarding. Using artificial intelligence, changes in the weather conditions and temperature were tracked real-time on the Billboard. With every change, Spider-Man fights the relevant elementals – water elemental while the on-lookers themselves were dealing with the rains, wind elemental when the breeze raced by in clear skies, and fire elementals when the temperatures soared, all in dynamically changing motion graphic.

Sony Pictures Entertainment India (SPE India) director and head of marketing Shony Panjikaran says, "Sony Pictures Entertainment India has been at the forefront of pioneering breakthrough initiatives that engage audiences with our films in exciting ways. We are proud to have launched these innovative weather OOH for 'Spider-Man: Far From Home', as it’s going to familiarise audiences with the most unique villains in the Spider-Man Universe – The Elementals, in the most unique way possible."

“Being a legacy film with a widely recognised and favorite super hero, Spider Man, the task was to bring alive the key unique selling point for Spider Man – FFH, in an innovative way. We were able to arrive at our solution, by marrying the elementals of the film with ad-tech, to bring alive real time relevance on big outdoor spaces – not only grab attention to the motion graphic, but also bring alive the wow-factor for the film," says Dentsu Webchutney associate media director Chirag Chandiramani.

  • Tom Holland is next Spiderman, Jon Watts to direct the next adventure

Tom Holland is next Spiderman, Jon Watts to direct the next adventure

NEW DELHI: Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today after a full worldwide casting search.

The $4 billion film will be in theatres in IMAX and 3D on 28 July 2017. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of Cop Car, the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

The film will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests. Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Sony Pictures Motion Pictures group chairman Tom Rothman said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Spider Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

  • Sony Pix goes big on social media and promotions

Sony Pix goes big on social media and promotions

MUMBAI: In the genre of English movies in India, nine players have been vying aggressively for a larger market share and online presence. One amongst these nine is Sony Pix. Read on about its efforts which include innovative micro properties on Facebook and giving out ‘money can’t buy merchandise.’

The channel has been following a three point strategy since 2012. Sony Pix and AXN EVP and business head Saurabh Yagnik explains, “We began by investing in quality content. We then wanted to build a stronger perception and thirdly we wanted to innovate to break the clutter.”

Firstly, the channel invested in content by tying up with MGM. It bought the Bond franchise for three years including Sky Fall. Along the way, Pix had a makeover in late 2013 changing its previous tagline ‘Hollywood is Here’ to its current one ‘Stay Amazed’. The identity was unveiled with the world premiere of Skyfall in October 2013.

It also premiered Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider Man. During the MIB3 premiere, Pix had launched an anti-alien day, where the channel said that eliminating various kinds of aliens from society was the need of the hour. Hash tags were displayed on the TV screen during the premiere, encouraging people to tweet. At that time, Yagnik had said that the initiative had trended through the day at number one and two in India and worldwide at number four. Similarly, with The Amazing Spiderman, Pix pitched the campaign around the amazing people in every person’s life, creating a web of amazing characters and stars.

Earlier, the channel had also created ‘Premiere PIXathon’ where four back to back movies were premiered on a single day. “We chose movies that had four big stars, or spoke about Hollywood’s four big stars and what makes them click with the audience, four big cricketers and their achievements, and with this, we used the message of the ‘power of four’ for our big Premiere Pixathon,” Yagnik had said at that time.

For 2014, the lineup includes Captain Phillips, The Hobbit: Desolation of the Smaug, The Amazing Spider Man 2 and Hercules.

Next, to build a stronger perception, the channel started ‘Pix Premiere Nights’ on Facebook to give viewers an opportunity to watch a movie a day before it is actually released in India. Winners are chosen on the basis of a contest. In all, 2,200 winners across 10 cities will be provided passes to watch a mega movie on 11 screens. To facilitate the winner’s attendance, a special helpdesk has been set up. So far the contest has been held for Robocop, Spiderman 2 and The Hobbit.  Next in line is The Expendables 3. As reported earlier by indiantelevision.com, one such initiative could cost the channel anywhere between Rs 2-3 crore.

Pix, which has more than two million followers on Facebook, according to Yagnik, decided to break from the clutter by creating micro properties on Facebook like: ‘Legendary Monday’ which has inspiring stories about celebrities; ‘Thoughtful Tuesday’ that is all about celebrity quotes; ‘Pixonomic Wednesday’ has box office collection facts while ‘Desi Thursday’ is a clash between Bollywood and Hollywood. ‘Superhero Friday’ includes all about action heroes while ‘Saturday Talks’ is about famous movie dialogues. The week culminates with ‘Gizmo Sunday’ which is all about gadgets.

The channel plans to announce breaking news about Hollywood through the re-launch of its animated character ‘Notty Pixy’ on Facebook. “She is a gossip reporter who provides Hollywood news first in India,” Yagnik says. He flips a well bound book to showcase a list of Hollywood stars, reporters, movies, events and websites that are the “sources” for ‘Notty Pixy’s’ news.

How has the three point strategy helped Pix?

Revealing TAM data, the channel says that during the first quarter (April 14 to June 14) Star Movies stood first with 19.80 per cent market share while Pix followed closely at the number two position with 19.30 per cent share. The difference was just 0.50 per cent. However, in the same quarter during the primetime slot, Sony Pix led the charts with a market share of 23.6 per cent with Star Movies a distant second having a market share of 17.90 per cent (TAM Market: All India 1 Mn+ TG CS 15+AB).

On Facebook, Pix has been leading the number one spot with 11.68 per cent engagement rate. Engagement includes likes, comments, shares and number of fans. In the second place is Movies Now with a 4.55 per cent engagement rate. Star Movies India and HBO India follow next with engagement rates of 3.35 per cent and 1.07 per cent respectively. Tonic Media is the digital agency that looks after these activities for Pix.

Sharing details about future plans of the channel, Yagnik says that the channel will provide its audience with ‘money can’t buy merchandise’. For example, viewers can win the blue t-shirt worn by Tom Hanks for the film Captain Phillips, which will be premiered on 27 July. Yagnik adds that the t-shirt comes with a certificate of authenticity. Soon thereafter, the blood stained shirt and tie worn by Jamie Foxx in the movie White House Down is up for grabs.

Yagnik revealed that Pix has been seeing revenue growth upwards of 25 per cent and is now available in HD on platforms like Dish TV, Hathway, Fastway and in Cable.

According to Maxus managing partner north and east region Navin Khemka “the channel is trying to use innovative ways to capture audiences. By giving out exclusive merchandises it will attract audiences who will participate in a genre that is fragmented. They key objective is to build loyalty for the channel and therefore is a good strategy.”
