Max Marketing marks 10 years of redefining film promotions in India

MUMBAI: India loves a blockbuster but in the last decade, it wasn’t just films making waves, it was the campaigns behind them. This August, Max Marketing & Innovations, the brainchild of Varun Gupta, marked 10 years of rewriting the rules of film promotion in India, turning over 150 releases into cultural moments. From concerts that made characters come alive to billboards that became landmarks, Max’s decade-long playbook is a masterclass in spectacle. For Kabir Singh, they staged a live concert; for Satya Prem Ki Katha, they turned a white heart emoji into a trending symbol of love and acceptance. In Ayodhya, they even unfurled a 50-ft poster at Ram Ki Paidi, creating a historic fusion of cinema and sacred space.

Actors and filmmakers have been unanimous in their applause. Ranveer Singh calls Max’s campaigns “spectacle-making,” Tabu says they’re “always fresh, always impactful,” while Vishal Bhardwaj insists that “promotion today is as much storytelling as the film itself and Max weaves that magic.” From Anil Kapoor to Sooraj Barjatya, Kabir Khan to JP Dutta, the chorus is the same: Max doesn’t just market films, it creates memories.

Their portfolio reads like a greatest hits playlist: RRR, Animal, Article 370, Major, Padman, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Hanuman, all stamped with the agency’s flair for scale and innovation. Beyond splashy stunts, Max has championed inclusivity too, with campaigns like the “Common Man’s Campaign” that put films on autos, buses, and metro hoardings, ensuring cinema met audiences in their daily grind.

Reflecting on the milestone, Gupta says: “From day one, our aim was to craft experiences, not campaigns. The next ten years are about pushing boundaries further, creating stories that outlast opening weekends.”

As Max steps into its second decade, the stage is set for an even bigger act where cinema, technology, and culture collide. If the last 10 years proved anything, it’s this: when Max is in the picture, the marketing itself is part of the show.

  • Barjatya’s ‘Piyaa Albela’ on ZeeTV streaming live on dittoTV

MUMABI: ZeeTV, well known for its ever-popular line up of TV shows is all set to launch the much-awaited romantic drama, ‘Piyaa Albela’, which can also be watched live on dittoTV. The show, produced by Sooraj Barjatya under the banner of Rajshri Productions, will launch on 6 March at 8.30 pm.

‘Piyaa Albela’ brings to viewers a perfect mix of romance, drama and comedy, with a touch of spirituality added in. Piyaa Albela will further strengthen the wide bouquet of Live TV shows across the range of 90+ channels that dittoTV offers to its subscribers.

While Sooraj Barjatya is well known for working with the biggest stars in Bollywood and television, however, for this daily soap he chose to cast newcomers, Akshay Mhatre and Sheen Dass, as the main leads. Commenting on this, Sooraj explains, “The concept of a sage in meditation and a temptress attempting to break his penance is a very limited view of the Vishwamitra Menaka story. Very few people know of the love story that goes beyond the superficial layer of mere seduction. Our story is not mythological – it is set in contemporary times with real, relatable characters. It has elements, however, that can be compared to the classic. Our protagonist Pooja is approached by Naren’s parents – not to seduce their son but to ignite a spark for the real world within him. But how the two react to each other at the outset and then gradually come closer in the course of their interactions forms the crux of Piyaa Albela. We are pleased to have found the ideal Naren and Pooja in Akshay and Sheen, both making their fiction debuts as leads. Akshay’s eyes exude the brooding intensity required of Naren while Sheen has the verve, grace and positivity that Pooja needs to embody. The show is set in Dehradun and Rishikesh. We look forward to a great response.” The mysterious and suspense-filled storyline of Piyaa Albela is sure to resonate with the Indian youth, who form an important part of dittoTV’s subscriber base.

Commenting on the launch of this new show, Z5 Business head of digital Archana Anand says, “dittoTV enables its subscribers to stay updated with all the diverse and gripping content that ZeeTV has to offer. We are extremely excited to bring Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic drama, Piyaa Albela, to viewers on our platform, dittoTV which allows viewers to catch their favourite programs live and on-the-go on their smartphones and internet connected devices, offering them the convenience of watching their favourite shows when they do not have easy access to a television set. With viewers increasingly becoming more selective about what they watch, it is highly essential to introduce differentiated and innovative content, which resonates well with the audience.”

dittoTV subscribers can catch this new daily soap every day from Monday to Friday at 8.30 PM on their Android and iOS phones or any other internet connected device. The monthly subscription charge for the platform is INR 20 per month.

  • TV storytelling needs same passion as films, says Sooraj Barjatya; to launch four shows in ’17

TV storytelling needs same passion as films, says Sooraj Barjatya; to launch four shows in ’17

MUMBAI: After a year, Rajshri Production is venturing again into television but this time not just with a single show. Rajshri plans to produce four shows in 2017 for Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs). Celebrating the courage and pride of a strong willed mother with which she empowers her daughter, Sooraj Barjatya recently launched its new offering with Colors, Ek Shringaar.. Swabhimaan.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Barjatya said, “I firmly believe that television needs the same passion as film-making. It is just that we all were busy with Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. So now, we are back to storytelling on television.”

He further added, “This show on Colors is one of ours most progressive shows, in which we are trying to show the part of the society which all parents face. This is a story of a middle-class Indian mother, who wants to prove through her daughters, who are IIM and IIT toppers, that today’s girls can be chairmen of companies and also run their household with equal pride and prowess. It’s time we encouraged them.”

The story of the finite show has been written by Sushil and Shilpa Choubey, the screenplay is by Nishikant and Pranjal and dialogues are Manu Sharma’s. The music has been directed by Udbhav and Dony while lyrics have been penned by Raghvendra Singh.

Produced by Rajshri, the show will start from 19 December at 9.30pm time slot from Monday to Friday. The show is replacing Rashmi Sharma Telefilms’ Swaragini which was launched in March 2015.

The show highlights a mother’s determination in not only providing the best education for her daughters, but also in finding a suitable match for them in a family that values upbringing over materialistic pleasures. A household that will allow her daughters’ careers to flourish rather than tie them down to domesticity. Swabhimaan traces the story of two sisters as they pledge to fulfill their mother’s dream of becoming self-reliant and society’s expectations of being married at an acceptable age.

According to a source, the estimated per episode production cost of the show is in the range of Rs 9 -10 lakh. On the ad rates, Swabhimaan commands Rs 1 lakh for a 10-second slot, the source said.

Speaking about this new offering, Colors CEO Raj Nayak said, “We, as a society, often do not give enough credit to the women for the value they add to our lives. Though now we have opened up about educating the girl child, but still, when it comes to marriage, we find people wanting to clip their wings and confine them to a measly role. Our latest offering attempts to change that mindset. The show highlights the importance of being self-reliant and at the same time uphold the tradition and values of our culture. With Sooraj Barjatya’s magical touch and a platform such as Colors, Ek Shringaar…Swabhimaan with its vibrant backdrop is sure to strike a chord with the viewers.”

Further Colors programming head Manisha Sharma added, “The concept is unique simply because it questions the contrasting principles of our society. We are all about educating our daughters but how many households are actually open to letting their daughter-in-law’s pursue their careers? Here’s a strong willed mother who just has one request to the world – Allow my daughters to work. Don’t let their education go to waste. The show addresses this thought head-on by laying focus on values like self-respect and self-worth which have been inculcated through a mother’s upbringing. The show marks our first collaboration with Rajshri Productions whose penchant for beautiful storytelling and powerful narratives has gripped audience attention on television and in films; we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”

“The show looks promising and the storyline is good but the critical question to get ratings, do they have what it takes? Ratings comes only with certain things or you cut across emotionally with the audience. That connections needs to be there and they might change the track halfway down the line when they realize that something is not working. Also, Colors has struggled a lot between 9- 10pm time slot. They are doing extremely well in 8-9pm and 10-11pm time band,” said a senior media planner on the condition of anonymity.

On other Hindi GECs, Colors’ new show Swabhimaan at 9.30 pm slot will be pitted against &TV’s Badho Bahu which airs at 9.30 pm from Monday to Friday, Zee TV’s Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani, Star Plus’ one of the longest running show Yeh Rishta Kya Khelta Hai, Life OK’s May I Come in Madam and Sab’s Trideviyaan. On the other hand, Sony Entertainment Television airs its one of its rated show Kuch Rang Pyaar ke Aise Bhi.

Rajshri forays into detective movie space

MUMBAI: It is no longer a banner that once made family dramas. Rajshri Production, renowned for movies like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath Saath Hain is all set to take a big leap through its upcoming movie Samrat & Co. Produced by debutante Kavita Barjatya, the movie is the first detective film under the Rajshri banner. The movie has been helmed by Kaushik Ghatak and hits the screens on 25 April.

The film’s unique and intriguing trailer was launched with great fanfare at a suburban multiplex in Mumbai with not only the entire cast and crew but the Barjatya scions as well!

“This subject is unconventional as compared to the films we have made at Rajshri earlier, so that whole mounting and canvas had to be different. The grey characters were the requirement of the story. I am happy that when we narrated the story to my father, he understood and supported me in venturing into this. Every character in the movie is intriguing and has some hidden agenda,” says Kavita Barjatya.

The movie targets the youth and is the first of its kind detective franchisee, wherein the very nuances of crime solving, human nature and the world of standalone private investigators will be presented on the big screen on a pure entertainment platform.

The poster and trailer of Samrat & Co were launched amidst the presence of Kamal Barjatya, Sooraj Barjatya, producer Kavita Barjatya, director Kaushik Ghatak, main leads Rajeev Khandelwal (who plays Samrat), Madalsa Sharma, Rajniesh Duggal, Smita Jaykar,Bhoumik Sampat, Naveen Prabhakar, Gufi Paintal, Shreya Narayan amongst others.
