  • Hotstar rules as SonyLiv and Netflix witness doubling of installs

Hotstar rules as SonyLiv and Netflix witness doubling of installs

MUMBAI: Guess which video streaming app is seeing rapid growth in installs in India? Well, according to Jana, the largest provider of free internet in emerging markets, the two video streamers are Netflix and SonyLiv. This was revealed by it in its Mobile Majority report, which takes a close look at the latest payment  trends in emerging markets. The research was conducted in India from 1 January  2018 through 31 March 31 2018, during which data around streaming app installs and usage was anonymously observed from users of Jana’s mCent browser.

According to the report, Netflix and SonyLiv accounted for 0.5 per cent and five per cent of the installs on 1 January 2018. By 31 March, their share of installs had gone up to 1.4 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. Amazon saw the install of its Prime Video service go up from four per cent to 5 per cent in the same period, even as the Viacom18 owned Voot watched as its share was shaved 13 per cent to 10.7 per cent.

YuppTV which accounted for 0.6 per cent of the installs in January saw the number get whittled down to 0.5 per cent. Of course, the monster, which was ruling the app install marketshare sweepstakes was Hotstar which notched up a colossal 69.4 per cent. But this down almost 10 per cent as compared to the  76 per cent at the beginning of the year.

However, these numbers probably will only skyrocket in  Jana’s next report – especially for Hotstar which saw heightened install activity during the Vivo Indian Premier League.  The finals saw the Star India-owned service serve more than  10.3 million concurrent streams, which was for it and its cloud services partner Akamai a new world record.

  • OTT players see subscription revenue as India’s future

OTT players see subscription revenue as India’s future

MUMBAI: Most Indian over the top (OTT) and even traditional mediums have assumed that Indian audiences aren’t willing to pay for content. But of late, discussions have shown that monetisation is happening at a slow pace. Though the return on investment (RoI) is not for the foreseeable future, the business minds are highly optimistic that the scenario will change in the next five years.

Eros Digital COO Ali Hussein, SonyLIV EVP Uday Sodhi, Syntropic Systems managing partner Alap Ghosh, Atechnos founder Apurv Modi and Hungama Digital Media VP Soumini Shridhara Paul delved on the future of the industry at an OTTv Mumbai session.

The session started with the age-old debate that Indian people don’t want to pay for content. The scenario hasn’t changed since last year’s panel.

Hussein said the main challenge is not that people don’t want to pay but whether the platforms are able to grow a habit among consumers to return. “The question is to allow the whole ecosystem to pave the way for a feasible experience for the consumers to pay,” he said.

Sodhi backed Hussein’s statement saying that everyone is paying for content in some way but it isn’t enough to allow evolution. 10 or 15 years ago, similar questions were thrown for traditional TV. He is optimistic in that next five years the scenario of the OTT industry will change too.

“In the last two to three years, significant consumption appetite has been seen. Penetration of smartphone, easy access to 4g has activated this. Now some of us are encouraged to create content as we believe that some sort monetisation is coming through,” he said.

Paul said, “When we come to down monetisation challenges, one has to look at how we can build something which is scalable.” She also thinks the quality of production makes a difference. Everybody cannot have $2 billion for content but ensuring the best product within budget is important. In spite of making some content similar, finding something different can really help.

The reasons that make consumers hesitate to pay have never been found. Ghosh mentioned three reasons. One of the reasons is that people stop paying when they finish watching what they wanted to watch. The doubt on the validity of the expense also restricts them to pay again as the consumers are habituated to pay Rs 200 for 300 channels where they don’t have to think what to watch next.

Whenever it comes to monetisation, everyone discusses subscription but it is advertising through which significant money can come through and that depends on good content. Going forward, revenue from both subscription and advertising will increase as the market will mature. As advertising is itself a complex ecosystem, there are bigger challenges for AVOD model to make money.

While Modi said that there is enthusiasm from advertisers to engage in OTT platforms, Ghosh thinks that in the urge to be across platforms they choose to be on one or two select platforms like YouTube, Hotstar to create interest among viewers.

Moreover, strategic partnerships for distribution also leave an impact to reach more consumers leading to better scaling as well as subscriptions.

While monetisation has been the key challenge to Indian OTT industry, there are new avenues which can help to overcome the challenge. It’s important for the ecosystem to be able to allow growth of both advertising and subscription based models. The increased attention on statistics from optimising data can help the players to understand what is working and what needs to be changed to retain consumers.

  • Sony Yay banks on originals with a slew of fresh content

Sony Yay banks on originals with a slew of fresh content

MUMBAI: Home-grown content in India is growing by leaps and bounds. Recently, Discovery Kids launched Little Singham as its new character to spearhead its library of originals and now Sony Yay has also rolled up its sleeves to be in the thick of competition. The channel has a new show, KickO and Super Speedo, on the cards along with 10 original movies.

Just a year into its launch, Sony Yay’s punt on originals is a bold move. The channel is investing in excess of Rs 50 lakh per episode of KickO and Super Speedo. The show, which will be aired everyday beginning 21st May at 12.00 pm, is being produced by Green Gold that promises to capture kids’ imagination through high-quality 3D animation.

This summer, it is launching five movies as a part of its movie festival ‘Housefull Fridays’. Based on two of Sony Yay’s flagship shows—Honey Bunny and Guru aur Bhole—the movies being premiered are Honey Bunny in Plane Hijack, Honey Bunny in Himalayan Car Rally, Honey Bunny in Double Impact, Guru aur Bhole the Gladiators and Guru aur Bhole in Alien Busters. Apart from these movies, the channel is also introducing new holiday episodes of the shows.

Sony Yay business head Leena Lele Dutta said that the channel’s initial plan was to come up with a Marathi audio feed instead of Malayalam. “We want to explore Maharashtra as it constitutes 14 per cent of our portion [target audience]. But we didn’t want to upset the apple cart right now. We decided to stick to our Hindi feed and [therefore] we saw an opportunity to venture into Kerala, considering its dynamics.”

“The management saw a huge gap in number 1 and 2 slots in terms of market share and critical ratings for Kerala market. That was the only reason to grab the opportunity to emerge in the Kerala market. Bengali was an obvious option for the channel to emerge into,” she added. The roadmap for Sony Yay doesn’t end there. “We might come up with a Marathi audio feed as well but it is not decided yet.”

Kick starting the year with a bang, the channel has already produced 88 hours of original content and is slated to scale up to an additional 120 hours in the second year. Sony Yay claims that it is the only kids channel to have 100 per cent of its airtime dedicated to original content in the viewable hours (7 am to 10 pm).

Intending to be a part of not only kids’ entertainment but also a part of their everyday lives, the channel has entered into a licensing and merchandising association with Black White Orange (BWO), a licensing, merchandising and brand agency. The deal includes toys, stationery and apparel.

Sony Yay has upped the ante for itself within just a year of launch. Taking the plunge into original animated content, the network has set its sights high.
