    ‘Porus’ viewership soldiers on

MUMBAI: Sony’s magnum opus Porus has been the talk of the town–first for being the first show wherein the IP is with the creator and later for its not-so-spectacular viewership. In fact, rumour mills were abuzz that the show would struggle to shrug off its sluggish start and build on its viewership. Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) data for the show, however, paints a different picture.

According to the data, the ratings (U+R) of the show are significantly higher than the ratings of the channel’s prime time daily soap Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya (Rishta Likhenge) and another prime-time show Vighnaharta Ganesh. While Porus is aired at 8.30 pm, Vighnaharta Ganesh precedes it at 8 pm, whereas Rishta Likhenge is shown at 9 pm on weekdays.

Porus’ launch week bagged it 3.6 million impressions in week 48 of 2017’s BARC data. The second week saw a drop of 0.6 million impressions. After 10 weeks of being on air, the latest ratings of week 5 for 2018 show Porus at a consistent 3.3 million impressions.

On the flip side, the week 48 of Vighnaharta Ganesh garnered 3.4 million impressions and Rishta Likhenge got 1.9 million impressions. There was no impact of Porus on Vighnaharta Ganesh’s ratings that was apparent in week 49, whereas Rishta lost 0.1 million impressions from week 48.

Swastik Productions founder Siddharth Kumar Tewary says, “Porus has been consistent in its ratings since its launch and this was our plan to be consistent in the beginning and then grow slowly. We held on to our ratings from the beginning to now. The first episode was a one-hour content and now we are showing 22 minutes content.” He says that comparing the current 3.3 million figure with the initial 3.6 million one shows that the show has actually grown. “We have made Porus with a huge amount of conviction. People have really appreciated us for keeping the promise of giving them differentiated concept and the way of storytelling,” he adds.

“Porus is a premium product. We have been happy with the viewership we have got and we are expecting it to grow up by 20 percent from February onwards,” said Sony Entertainment Television EVP and business head Danish Khan. During the ten weeks, the highest impressions that Vighnaharta Ganesh holds is 3.8 million impressions, Porus has 3.6 million impressions, and Rishta has 2.1 million impressions.

SonyLiv EVP & digital business head Uday Sodhi says, “Porus is very popular and among the best performing shows like Taarak Mehta, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai and Super Dancer on SonyLiv. The scale and impact of the show is amazing. It is perfect for digital audiences and it is able to capture the scale & the size fruitfully. We are seeing significant consumption of the show on SonyLiv. There is a huge jump in the month of January over December. The viewership of Porus has grown 30 per cent in January as compared to December.”

Porus has successfully travelled to Sri Lanka with a new name Digvijaya. The buyer for the 260-episode series is Maharaja Television (MTV) and the show will be dubbed in Sinhala. Earlier, Porus was acquired by Workpoint Entertainment of Thailand for exclusive TV and non-exclusive digital rights.

  • Zee’s ‘Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan’ emerges as top-ranking TV show in UAE

MUMBAI: Zee Middle East’s second, locally produced fiction series Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan which follows the storyline of a UAE based real estate tycoon, has emerged as the top-ranking TV show among south Asians in the UAE for two consecutive months.

The show, which started off with the highest rating recorded for any show in UAE for 2016 (Average 12.1 TVR) has now bettered its own performance in January by clocking 14.5 TVR.

The show was also pitted against high-profile programs like The Kapil Sharma Show (Average 2.2 TVR) on Sony TV and Bigg Boss (Average 2.1 TVR) on Colors which were airing at the same time. [Source: IPSOS, Target Group: All South Asians in UAE, Month: Jan 2017, Time Band: Sat, 21:30 to 22:30 UAE]. In addition, the show was also declared the Best International Show at the Zee Rishtey Awards 2016 aired on 19 February 2017.

Zee Middle East and Asia Pacific CEO Mukund Cairae said,“Creating differentiated local content has given ZEE Middle East an edge over competition in the market. It’s also a great tool for advertisers as they have the opportunity to look at brand integration and other in-programming benefits. We are indeed thrilled with the response to ‘Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan’ from viewers. Recognition on a platform like Zee Rishtey Awards too is a great honour and we look to continue the same success in the coming years”.

With a star cast featuring renowned Bollywood actor Javed Sheikh and television stars Aryan Vaid, Garima Goel, Riyanka Chanda and Sachiin Kkhurana among others, Khwaboon Ke Darmiyaan was shot across Dubai in a packed 45-day schedule.

“Just like ‘Parwaaz’, our first drama series, which was also well-appreciated by the audience, the storyline of ‘Khwaboon Ke Darmiyaan’ was well-researched to ensure that the audience could relate to it. The star cast and core production crew were handpicked to ensure that our product is a notch above what we usually see on television. We are glad that ‘Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan’ has shaped up well and it deserves all the accolades for the efforts put in by the team.” said Zee Middle East Chief Operating Officer Manoj Mathew.

Zee Middle East has always been at the forefront of creating path-breaking local content with a mix of fiction and non-fiction shows that include the weekly magazine show – Zee Connect, an inter-school talent show Rangoli Gulf, a path-breaking singing reality show with no age or geographical boundaries – Asia’s Singing Superstar and many other such engaging initiatives.

After the success of Parwaaz in 2014, Khwaabon Ke Darmiyaan, a finite series of 13 episodes of one hour each, airing every Saturday at 9:30pm (UAE time) was launched on Zee TV Middle East last December. The grand finale episode will air on 25 February.

Going ahead, Zee Middle East also plans to launch the series on Zee Alwan dubbed in Arabic.

A source informed Indiantelevision.com, “For a 10 sec ad slot the channel is charging Rs 2 lakh for The Kapil Sharma Show.”

Industry estimates the production cost for the first episode as close to Rs 1 crore because it has Shahrukh Khan and also it will be live event shot in New Delhi.

Another source further informed that the production cost of each episode of The Kapil Sharma Show will come down to between Rs 50- 55 lakhs excluding the talent cost. It may be recalled that production cost for Comedy Nights With Kapil was approximately Rs 1.3 crore per episode.

The promo was launched on 4 April and the video on YouTube crossed more than 5 lakh views in one week. In second episode, The Kapil Sharma show  will entertain the audience with the star cast of Baaghi, Sharddha Kapoor and Tiger Shroff on 24 April.

Earlier while speaking with Indiantelevision.com, Sony EVP and business head Danish Khan said, “IPL is a great success and is very popular. But we believe The Kapil Sharma Show will have a totally different set of audience and both will have high viewership. IPL and The Kapil Sharma Show can both run successfully at the same time. IPL is a big advantage for us, we will use it to promote and generate more awareness.”

“The show will be good, as I always say people watch content not the channel. Kapil himself is a brand name and the star is in himself. His loyal audience will watch the show despite it being an IPL month. It is like a cricket match, and people watch matches on whichever channel that shows it,“ said a senior media planner.

Concurring, another media expert said, “Kapil is a star and has a good fan following, the show will definitely get traction from people. I do not think that shows on other channels or IPL will impact Sony’s upcoming show. ”

The Kapil Sharma Show on the opening day has been pitched against Colors world premiere television of Bajirao Mastani, Star Plus’ Diya Aur Baati Hum at 9pm and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai at 9.30 pm, along with Life OK’s Super Cops Vs Supervillains..
