SPSN launches campaign for the upcoming Australia tour of England

KOLKATA: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) is all set to honour the ‘Real Fans’ of cricket with their new campaign for upcoming Australia tour of England. It has launched two campaign films that feature Real fans vs Fake fans in real-life situations only to realise that in order to be a Real Fan it is important to watch and follow great cricket and cricketers no matter which team is playing.

The series will be aired live and exclusive on SONY SIX and SONY TEN 3 (Hindi) channels from 4 September 2020.

Cricket fans are already excited for the faceoff between Australia and England. This will be Australia’s first series in a new era of cricket during the pandemic.

“Asli Fans Ke Liye is our in-house campaign for the upcoming Australia tour of England that honors Real Fans, who are passionate about great cricket and cricketers no matter which team they play for and follow ball-by-ball play purely for the love of the sport. The campaign is a shout-out to all the Real Fans of cricket whose die-hard love for cricket knows no boundaries. They not only support their own country but also go beyond boundaries to genuinely embrace the sport. The upcoming Australia tour of England features two great cricketing nations who share one of the fiercest rivalries in cricket today and a Real Fan will definitely not miss watching this high-octane series,” SPN sports business head-marketing and on-air promotions Neville Bastawalla said.

The first film showcases Fake Fans following Jonny Bairstow’s cooking and David Warners’ foot-tapping videos that are garnering maximum views on their social media platform while Real Fans are actually following their heroes especially when they are playing their innings and making history on the pitch.

The second film is a shoot-based film set in an office where a group of colleagues are watching a LIVE match in play. The film opens with a Fake Fan, giving his pseudo expert advice, which is factually incorrect and leads to his colleague, a Real Fan, correcting him on the match playing out on TV between England and Australia. The film ends with the Real Fan educating the fake fan on one of the fiercest rivalries in cricket today and the real drama that unfolds when England and Australia play against each other.

India is a cricket-frenzy nation and “Asli Fans Ke Liye” is a light-hearted perspective on the emotions of Real Cricket Fans who follow the sport for the love of the game. The campaign films have been rolled out in English and Hindi languages, encouraging Indian fans across the country to tune-in to SONY
SIX channels in English and SONY TEN 3 channels in Hindi, for the high octane drama between England and Australia on the field.

  • SPSN launches ‘The Blue Revolution’ to re-run historic 1985 cricket matches

SPSN launches ‘The Blue Revolution’ to re-run historic 1985 cricket matches

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) will showcase the best moments from the historical 1985 B&H World Championship of cricket tournament that had the Indian cricket team donning the blue jersey, in the series ‘The Blue Revolution’.

The 12-part series revisits India’s landmark victory in the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket, the first major tournament India won in coloured clothing and established its dominance in cricket across the globe. The series launches from 4 May at 8.30 pm and will be aired on SONY SIX and SONY SIX HD channels.

SPSN dives into the historical archives to revisit the victorious campaign of the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket in ‘The Blue Revolution’ and will showcase how India marked its dominance in cricket, ultimately giving rise to the term ‘Men in Blue’.

Sony Pictures Networks India chief revenue officer, distribution and head – sports business Rajesh Kaul says: “The Blue Revolution covers one of the most iconic moments in our sporting history and commemorates the era where India established its supremacy in the world of Cricket. At that time our World Cup winning team had seen a dip in form, however, they answered all their critics as champions do – by winning the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket.”

“The celebrations that ensued with Ravi Shastri and the team in the car as well as on the ground are iconic visuals of our rich cricketing heritage and we are bringing back these memorable games for the Indian cricket fan,” Kaul adds.

As a part of the build-up to the marquee episodes and matches, SPSN has organised a series of live interactive chat sessions with some of the Indian cricket legends and heroes of the unbeaten class of ’85 – Ravi Shastri, Roger Binny, Madan Lal and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.

The sessions will be hosted by Rajdeep Sardesai and Joy Bhattacharya. TV Today Network consulting editor Rajdeep Sardesai says, “I remember getting up at 5 am in the morning to watch the Indian cricket team perform at the B&H World Championship of Cricket in 1985. Winning the World Cup in 1983 was unexpected but we really proved that we are the best team in the world in 1985.”

“The Blue Revolution series is a must-watch for all for its historical and nostalgic value. I am really looking forward to reliving those moments with some of the heroes of the team who were a part of this landmark endeavour on the official Facebook page of Sony Sports,” says Sardesai.

The World Championship of Cricket was a ‘mini’ World Cup played between seven teams: India, Australia, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Before touching down in Australia in 1985, the Indian team had lost three series on the bounce and were one of the least favourites to win the tournament, even after the heroic 1983 World Cup finals win over West Indies.

Led by the astute Sunil Gavaskar, the Indian team donned the Blue Jersey for the first time and went on to beat all teams in the series and eventually winning the finals against arch-rivals Pakistan. Since then, only one colour has been associated with the Indian cricket team and this built the foundation for the ‘The Blue Revolution’.

  • Sony Sports’ digital miniseries to keep sports fans entertained

Sony Sports’ digital miniseries to keep sports fans entertained

MUMBAI: In the absence of live sporting events across the globe due to the Covid2019 pandemic, the Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) has come up with a new digital miniseries: ‘Sony Ten presents The Medal of Glory’, aimed at engaging sporting communities across the social media landscape.

“We felt this was the perfect time to bring Indians closer to India’s Olympic champions and get to know our athletes up close and personal through this show,” says Sony Pictures Sports Network head – marketing & on-air promotions Neville Bastawalla.

Bastawalla further says: “Given the environment, we needed to innovate within the guidelines and take into consideration that everyone is in lockdown in the safety of their homes.”

Sony Ten presents The Medal of Glory’ is hosted by Raman Bhanot – a well-renowned sports anchor, and presenter – who has also presented the previous five editions of the Olympics.

The Sony Sports programming team, along with Raman Bhanot, worked together to bring the miniseries to avid sports fans. “The mini-series comprises fifteen episodes of fifteen minutes each; Bhanot has already shot almost all the episodes on video call chats with these Olympians,” SPSN marketing head explains.

Bastawalla adds: “The sports enthusiast will see these medal winners talking about their road to glory, iconic moments from their sporting journey, candid discussions around the life amid lockdown and other light-hearted anecdotes during their conversation with Bhanot.”

The digital miniseries features iconic medal-winning athletes of India like Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar, Leander Paes, Karnam Malleshwari and Sakshi Malik, to name a few. And, in the later episodes, it will feature Yogeshwar Dutt, Vijay Kumar, Mahabali Satpal and Vijender Singh as well.

“A large part of SPSN marketing efforts for this miniseries is directed on digital and social media by using major social media platforms in a big way; however, it will also be promoted on-air across the network channels,” says Bastawalla. “We plan to launch three episodes each week across five weeks. They will be available for the Sony Sports community across key platforms.”

Though the primary focus of coming up with this miniseries is to engage our sporting communities; “A few brands have expressed their interest in the series and we are evaluating these prospects,” adds the SPSN marketing head without revealing the names of interested brands.

It’s over a month now since the sporting events across the globe have been suspended, cancelled or postponed to future dates amid the rising cases of the pandemic around the world. Sony Sports is the official broadcaster of the majority of international sporting events including two marquee events – Olympics 2020 and Euro Cup 2020 – which were scheduled to happen later this year but now have been suspended for a year to curb the spread of the Covid2019.

On similar lines, Star Sports has also launched a non-live talk show purely based on cricket called Cricket Connected, wherein they bring current and former cricket stars across countries to talks about the gentlemen’s game and the future of people involved with it.

The sports broadcasters are trying to find an alternative to keep their viewers engaged and occupied with some or the other content in the absence of non-live sporting events. Moreover, they have also started re-running the historical archived matches of various sports on their sports channels.

  • Sony Pictures Networks pledges Rs 100 million to film, TV daily wage earners

Sony Pictures Networks pledges Rs 100 million to film, TV daily wage earners

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) will contribute Rs 100 million to support daily wage workers in the media and entertainment industry, in response to the nationwide lockdown to contain the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the entire media ecosystem including all television, cinema shows and films production coming to a halt since 20 March, the M&E industry is grappling with mass unemployment. It has especially impacted the sustenance of the daily wage earners from production crew involving a gamut of people like artists, camera men, spot boys, light boys and their dependent families.

The network is reaching out to the daily wage earners identified by their respective trade associations with free coupons which they and their families can exchange for their daily necessities like food and essential items at select retail stores. SPN is also working with its various commissioned production houses to disburse a month’s salary to each daily wage earner.

Additionally, the network has also contributed to the ‘Swades COVID Fund’, set up by the Swades Foundation. Founded by Zarina & Ronnie Screwvala, the foundation is providing authorities of Mumbai, Raigad and Nashik districts of Maharashtra state, medical equipment and consumables, procured under their direction for their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, in Mumbai, the foundation is supporting infrastructure, healthcare staff, volunteers and consumables in identified government & private hospitals.

SPN managing director and CEO NP Singh said, “In light of the global pandemic, we are witnessing large communities across the world coming together to tide over the crisis. These unprecedented times have had a cascading impact on the media and entertainment industry, which employs a huge number of daily wage workers. As a conscientious conglomerate, it is our responsibility to direct efforts towards ensuring aid reaches our primary beneficiaries who have contributed to the success of the network.

'Besides this initiative, we are also providing coupons to the migrant workers from this daily wage workforce, which they can trade off at certain retail outlets for groceries and essential supplies. We will leverage every opportunity to help our country at large to get through trying times like these.”

Additionally, in an unanimous support with the industry, the network has made its channel Sony PAL available free of charge on all DTH and cable networks to its viewers for a period of two months. This will provide people who are restricted to their homes wholesome entertainment and invigorating content and will help provide relief during the period of lockdown.

Several channels in the network including Sony Entertainment Television, Sony SAB, Sony Pictures Sports Network, Sony Marathi and Sony YAY! have created PSAs. Additionally, advertising inventory across SPN is being extensively used to promote public service messaging.
