Sony strengthens weekday programming; launching four shows by July ’17

MUMBAI: After strengthening the weekend programming with Super Dancer, Sony Entertainment Television is all set to bring one of its iconic shows — Indian Idol — back.

“Sony has traditionally done very well as far as the weekend is concerned. So, when we started rebuilding this channel a year ago, the aim was to make Sony the number one weekend destination. I am happy to say that we have achieved that. Weekday programming is where we are going to focus now. We have launched Beyhadh which received a good opening. Weekday is a habit which will take time to be cultivated, and can’t happen in one go,” said Sony Entertainment Television EVP and business head Danish Khan.

Khan added, “There are three-four launches between January and July in 2017, and, in July, people will see a very healthy weekend. It will be gradual, step by step, but, like you have seen in the weekend, you will see weekday of Sony fulfilling expectation of the audience very soon.” Sony’s much talked about historical drama Peshwa Bajirao is slated to launch in January.

Indian Idol is the first step in bringing back the old iconic shows of Sony. The show will be aired from 24 December on Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.

The channel has roped in Vivo as the title sponsors, and KUV 100 and Quick Heal as the ‘Co-powered By’ sponsors. According to sources, a 10-sec ad rate for the show has been sold for Rs 1 lakh each.

This season also marks the comeback of its original trio of judges, Farah Khan, Sonu Nigam and Anu Malik, which has come together on the platform once again, after 12 years. Their chemistry and unique style of interaction with the participants holds promise — to make this season an ultimate entertainer on the Indian television.

While the contestants impress viewers with their talent, the judges will also mark them on three most important factors that define the Indian Idol platform – Riyaaz, Awaaz and Andaaz. The legendary singing sensation of India, Sonu Nigam, will focus on the contestants’ ‘Riyaaz’, the maestro Anu Malik will be keenly observing their ‘Awaaz’, and known for her distinguished style, Bollywood’s ace choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan will judge their ‘Andaaz’.

The show will begin with audition episodes from across the country; episodes that witnessed lakhs of talented singers competing to make it into the top 110. Hosting the ninth season will be the charming Karan Wahi and Paritosh Tripathy.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sony Pictures Networks CEO NP Singh said, “It’s an authentic talent hunt show with authentic talent. Indian Idol is a show which broke new ground a few years ago, and in many ways changed the landscape of reality shows in India. It worked really well for us.”

Post the fantastic success of its most popular show Super Dancer, the channel now brings to the fore one of its biggest properties — Indian Idol. Khan informed, “We have created a dedicated time of 8pm on weekends that will continue to bring unseen talent to our viewers. Super Dancer saw some amazing dancers and now, with Indian Idol, we intend to take this legacy ahead. The original trio of judges is a wonderful combination in the world of music and their chemistry coupled with outstanding singers will surely create magic on screen.”

Said FremantleMedia India business head Vidyuth Bhandary, “The global phenomenon of the Idol format — launched in 52 territories worldwide and rated as the No 1 show 48 times — has been watched by half a billion viewers globally, making it one of the world’s most loved shows. We are proud of our strong partnership and collaboration with Sony Pictures Networks India, and happy to announce the launch of the 9th season of Indian Idol. It’s been 12 years since the first season of Indian Idol was launched on SET making it the longest-running reality show in India with unprecedented participation.”

The channel will soon bring back all its iconic shows such as — KBC and Dus Ka Dum.

“Indian Idol has been a torch-bearer of sorts in terms of the non-fiction programming slate for Sony, and has proved to be a war-horse when it comes to TVR numbers. Thus, it’s great news for Sony that the show is making a return after a rather long hiatus and what’s better is that they have gone back to the earlier panel of judges, which allows the audience to find an instant connect from the word go. What’s worked for the show earlier is the platform that it has provided for stars of the future, but the fact that the show wasn’t around for four years has allowed other shows like ‘The Voice’ to create ample room for competition. It will be a great battle to be witnessed between Indian Idol’s return along with a new format in Colors’ Rising Star on the small screen in the coming days,” said a senior media planner.

  • BCCI’s cricket media rights bonanza

    BCCI’s cricket media rights bonanza

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has forecast that it is going to take home a whopping 60 per cent plus more media rights income from cricket in the financial year 2016-2017. The figure it has kept in its sights is Rs 1036.80 crore.

In 2015-16, it had budgeted a figure of Rs 648 crore, and it easily got to it.

The board generated gross media rights and franchisee consideration receipts of Rs. 1069.75 crore in 2015-2016 as against Rs. 999.6 crore in 2014-2015 from the mega bonanza Idian Premier League (IPL). The jump, the board, says is due to an increase in media rights income which went up to Rs 738.06 crore from Rs 689.10 crore in 2014-2015. Of this Rs 689.10 crore (Rs 620.23 crore), came courtesy Multi Screen Media Ltd (now Sony Pictures Networks- SPN- India) for the television rights within India. Rs 48.96 crore (Rs 47.68 crore) was contributed by Times Internet and sublicensees for righ.

It generated Rs 25.31 crore from British Sky Broadcasting from the sale of its television, internet and mobile media rights for the UK, Ireland, Isle of Mann, Channel Islands and the European territories for the IPL. ESPN coughed up Rs 23.47 crore for the TV, audio, internet and mobile rights for the US and surrounding territories while Hotstar anted up Rs 48 crore for its delayed domestic streaming rights for India, and for audio and television, internet mobile and audio rights for some territories.

The board has reported a surplus of Rs 210.51 crore from the IPL in 2015-2016.

Additionally, BCCI’s gross media rights income from its international fixtures too went up has gone up from Rs. 388.80 crore last year to Rs. 648 crore in the current year, due to increase in the number of matches held in India, says BCCI honorary treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, in the annual report.

He adds: “The cricket board has a surplus of income over expenditure of Rs. 111.83 crore as against Rs. 166.87 crore in the earlier year. This decrease in surplus is mainly due to distribution of additional amount due to associations, additional payments to players and absence of income from CLT-20 Tournament, in spite of increase in total income as compared to previous year.”

In the current financial year 2016-17, the BCCI’s budgeted surplus is estimated at Rs. 509.13 crore.

The BCCI in its annual report has stated that the Indian IPL, which is going into its tenth season has been valued at $4.5 billion (Rs 27,000 crore) and its ninth edition generated 102 crore impressions according to the Broadcast Audience Research Council. The valuation of the IPL brand was done by appraisal firm Duff & Phelps.

According to the board, the IPL clocked a cumulative reach of 361 Million viewers, making it a total of 52 per cent of TV viewing households who tuned into IPL 2016 on television. On top of that 1.5 million spectators turned up at the stadia to watch the action on the ground.

Additionally, the IPL is the fastest growing sports league in the world on microblogging site Twitter even when compared to Major League Baseball, NBA, NFL and EFA. The IPL fan following grew at a scorching pace of 300 per cent.

With the numbers that the BCCI is throwing up about the IPL one can really expect the TV rights slugfest between Star India, Sony Pictures Networks, Amazon (??) and Reliancd Jio (??) to get really fierce and set new benchmarks.

  • SPN India TV ad revenue & subscriber numbers rise: Sony Corp

SPN India TV ad revenue & subscriber numbers rise: Sony Corp

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) India – led by CEO NP Singh – is doing well, if one goes by the numbers its Japanese parent Sony Corp announced last weekend.

For one the Sony Corp presentation around its financial results for the quarter ending 30 June 2016 clearly states that it has been seeing “higher advertising revenues in Latin America and India” which has helped boost its media networks business in the period.

Then SPN India’s subscriber numbers too are on the up, according to Sony Corp.

It states in its notes to the financials that the India channel cluster (consisting of SET, MAX, SAB, Pix, Aatth, Mix, Six, AXN, PAL, MAX2, Sony ESPN, Wah and Animax India) has increased its subscriber number from 650.4 million on 30 June 2015 to 690.4 million on 30 June 2016 – a growth of about 6 per cent.

The channels which are distributed over India, North America, Europe, the Pacific, South east Asia, Australia, west Asia and Africa reported an increase in international subscribers from 2 million to 2.3 million an increase of 15 per cent in the same period.

Sony Pictures worldwide media network business – which covers all its TV channels – did a revenue of $588.418 million in the same period as compared to $576.04 million in Q1-2015. It clearly shows that business is on upswing.

Sony Corp’s Pictures segment (including media networks revenue and theatrical box office income) reported a revenue of 183.3 million Japanese Yen ($1.8 billion) and an operating loss of 10.6 billion Japanese Yen ($103.84 million) in the quarter to 30 June 2016. In terms of the Japanese currency that tots up to a 6.9 per cent increase in revenues (Q1 2015 – 171.5 billion Japanese yen), and a 1 billion Japanese Yen reduction in its operating loss (11.7 billion Japanese yen in Q1 2015).

Meanwhile, sales and operating revenue of the mother company Sony Corp decreased by 10.8 per cent compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year (year-on-year) to 1,613.2 billion yen ($15,662 million).

This significant decrease was mainly due to the impact of foreign exchange rates, a decrease in Mobile Communications segment sales reflecting a significant decrease in smartphone unit sales, a decrease in revenues in the Financial Services segment due to the deterioration in investment performance in the separate account at Sony Life Insurance Co Ltd as well as decreases in sales in the Semiconductors and Imaging Products & Solutions segments due to the impact of the earthquakes in the Kumamoto region in 2016. This decrease was partially offset by an increase in Game & Network Services segment sales reflecting increases in PlayStation 4 software sales. On a constant currency basis, sales decreased 3 per cent year-on-year.
