Sony brings ESPN Films’ iconic sports documentaries

MUMBAI: ESPN Films, known for producing award-winning sports films and documentaries, has tied up with Sony Pictures Network (SPN) to bring some compelling sports stories to India. The initiative starts 27 November 2016 on Sony ESPN and Sony ESPN HD channels.

The series will debut in India with `The Two Escobars’. Directed by the Zimbalists, it tells the tale of two men named Escobar — Andrés, the captain and poster child of Colombia’s national team, and Pablo, the infamous drug baron who pioneered the phenomenon known in the underworld as `narco-soccer’.

Appearing for the first time in India, the critically-acclaimed, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series of documentaries bring to viewers a thoughtful and innovative examination of the sports world, its characters, events and intersections with society at large where stories are told by filmmakers in partnership with ESPN.

With topics ranging from Nelson Mandela’s embrace of the 1995 Rugby World Cup as a force for racial unity, to the rise and fall of Pablo and Andres Escobar during the “Narco-Soccer” era in Colombia, to the bravado and foolhardy courage of Muhammad Ali in his twilight years, fighting to hold on to greatness, the range and poignancy of stories are timeless and should appeal to Indian viewers who love great storytelling.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday at a special screening of one such film, ESPN India and South Asia head and vice president Ramesh Kumar said, “Part of what has always distinguished ESPN is that we do not only cover the games, we cover the ‘game around the game’ and we do it as storytellers. These films go beyond sports and engage viewers with compelling, often unknown or previously unseen, narratives that capture the power, emotion and poignancy of sports in our lives.”

Often credited with revitalizing and revolutionizing the art of sports documentary, ESPN Films projects are brought to life by a roster of gifted filmmakers collaborating with ESPN. Among those who have created films for the series are Jeff & Michael Zimbalist, Clifford Bestall, Albert Maysles, Barry Levinson, Bradley Kaplan, Brett Ratner, Spike Jonze, John Singleton, Brian Koppleman, Michael Rappaport, Daniel Gordon, Alex Gibney, Eric Drath, Ezra Edelman and many more.

Commenting on the launch, SPN India Sports Cluster Business Head and EVP Prasana Krishnan said, “Some of the most inspiring stories in the world have come from sports. We are showcasing a collection of award-winning ESPN Films documentary series for the first time in India that is sure to appeal to both die-hard sports fans as well as people who don’t know much about sports. The ESPN films are a differentiated offering from Sony ESPN channels that comprise legendary human interest stories that will give our viewers an opportunity to relive some of the greatest moments in the history of sports.”

ESPN Films was launched in March 2008 and has been an industry leader in documentary filmmaking since its inception, producing more than 100 documentaries that have showcased some of the most compelling stories in sports.

Speaking to indiantelevision.com, ESPN India Television Initiatives Head Jasdeep Pannu said, “Times are changing in India and sports is becoming extremely relevant. Also, this is the kind of content that you will not find anywhere in the world. The content appeals to sports fans as well those passionate about films.”

Pointing out that to promote and market these films campaigns are being run on Sony’s in-house TV channels, Pannu said. “We are also cross promoting the films on our regular channels on digital media like ESPN.com, cricinfo, etc.”

Films like `The 16th Man’, `Muhammad and Lary’, `Maradona’, `The Real Rocky’, `Into the Wind’, `Little Master’ and `Unmatched’ are among the few productions that will be telecasted on Sony ESPN and Sony ESPN HD every Sunday noon.

This fight is extremely important for Pennington as it represents both the greatest challenge and opportunity of her personal life. The bout marks Tate’s return to action after being usurped as the division’s champion. She’ll hope to put the one-sided thrashing behind her and get back to turning in the kind of performance that allowed her to win five straight prior to the recent defeat.

Star India, Sony Pictures Network India pick up IPL tender document

MUMBAI: The race to pocket the broadcast rights to India’s top cricket franchise, the IPL, has commenced. According to reports appearing in the media, Sony Pictures Network India (SPN-India) has picked up the IPL tender document. A Times of India news item reports that SPN-India took this decision “without prejudice.”

What that means is that SPN-India can still take the BCCI to court for allegedly reneging on its earlier broadcast rights contract with the cricket body, which gave the broadcaster the first right of refusal.

The BCCI, on its part, says it is under public scrutiny and the Supreme Court has ordered it to maintain transparency in all its financial dealings. Any deal would be questionable unless done openly through a transparent auctioning process, it says.

Amogst other bidders who picked up the tender document are Star India which has been pretty gung-ho on sports; it made an announcement in 2013 that it was plonking down Rs 20,000 crore towards developing sports and sports television in India over the next five years. Rs 1,500 crore of this would be towards developing hockey.

Amazon Prime Video has been reported by the media to be interested in throwing its hat in the ring as well, media reports stated. Who else will enter the fray will become clearer over the next few days.

The IPL tender envisages the television rights to be assigned for 10 years, whereas the digital rights will be for five years. Punters are betting as to what extent the bidders will open their wallets to acquire the rights. $2 billion to $4 billion is the range that is being talked about.

  • Sony SAB launches ‘Dr. Bhanumati On Duty’, an off-beat hospital comedy

Sony SAB launches ‘Dr. Bhanumati On Duty’, an off-beat hospital comedy

MUMBAI: Sony Sab is all set to launch a new hospital based comedy series called Dr. Bhanumati On Duty. Set in rural Rajasthan, the show will focus on Dr. Bhanumati Bhinn a no-nonsense Rajasthani army doctor who is known for her unique style in curing her patients.

With actress Kavita Kaushik in the lead as Dr Bhanumati Bhinn, the show will also feature Gopi Bhalla as Lovely Singh Dhingra who is her assistant-cum-sidekick.

Dr. Bhanumati On Duty is set to hit the tube on Tuesday, 7 June onwards, Monday to Friday at 10:30 hours on Sony SAB.

The plot will chronicle the escapades of Dr. Bhanumati, her two orderlies and the patients. The vibrant Bhanumati will try to solve the problems of her patients, using her trademark catchphrase ‘Samjyo Kai’ while she treats them. The conventional army life full of vigor and discipline has influenced her strongly and she solves her patients’ medical problems in her signature ‘stunt and blunt’ style which she considers as alternative therapy. This beauty on duty believes that medicines are not the only way to cure patients!

When on duty, Bhanumati will be joined by her loyal orderly Lovely Singh and Doodhnath (Ketan Singh), who help her solve weird cases with a tinge of humour. Lovely Singh who is a loyal follower of Bhanumati’s techniques will be seen following her around causing her a major discomfort. While she tries her best to keep him away from her patients, her attempts seem to be futile which add on to the comic quotient of the show. To add to her daily dilemma, her other assistant Doodhnath is another odd character.. In fact Lovely and Doodhnath are always arguing with each other over every issue and all this banter irks Bhanumati.

The show will also see intermittent entries of other administrators like the ward boy and other junior doctors which in entirety make Dr Bhanumati Bhinn’s in-house army in her hospital.
SAB TV senior EVP & business head Anooj Kapoor said, “With Dr Bhanumati On Duty, we take a step ahead in the hospital comedy space on the channel. The concept of the show is very unconventional yet entertaining. The disciple and routine of army life has influenced Dr Bhanumati strongly and she solves her patients’ medical problems with alternative and unique kind of therapies which automatically evoke humour. We have worked with Kavita Kaushik before and we are confident that with her in the lead, the show will be well received by our viewers.”

  • Ek India Happywala is what Sony wants India to sing during IPL

Ek India Happywala is what Sony wants India to sing during IPL

MUMBAI: The ballroom in the five star hotel was packed with journalists, jostling for space. The lights were dimmed. Toddlers waddle in cutely with white blossoms in their hands. They  distribute a flower each to the scribes present there –  the fragrance of peace travels all across the ballroom.A tall Sikh gentleman is escorted onto the stage, the LED backdrop lights up. Inscribed on the LED wall were the words:  Ek India…Happywala.

And as the lights gradually come on, they reveal  the turbaned gentleman. He is none other than Sony Pictures Networks (SPN )-  erstwhile known as Multi Screen Media (MSM) – CEO NP Singh. And what just happened was the unveiling of the 2016 campaign of India’s longest short format league – the Indian Premier League which annually captures the hearts and minds of cricket crazy India.
Sony Max and Sony Max2 senior executive vice president Neeraj Vyas follows Singh on the stage,  and without any hemming and hawing proudly announces:  “The biggest brand of the country cannot stay away from the mood of the country.

And that exactly underlines the campaign’s central theme: unity, harmony and happiness are the three pillars on which the entire Ek India….Happywala (One happy India) is based.
The 60 second TVC reflects on the ongoing intolerance brouhaha  in the country and shows how cricket and IPL can help things turn around positively.
The film starts with greyscale still images of a rickshaw driver getting a thrashing, a horrified inked man and two youth battling it out with a hockey stick each in their hands.

The images move to color showing a youth engaged  in vandalising a yellow taxi. A cricket ball lands at  his feet and then follow a group of young kids asking for the ball. He stops smashing up the cab  and joins the young ones in their game.

That’s the power of the IPL and that’s what exactly the campaign wants to communicate.

The strong message is complemented by Salim and Sulaiman’s touchy background score.

“Sonal Dabral and his DDB Mudra team created the campaign for us, they did it last year too. We have also kept the same creators when it comes to music and if you see there is not much of a difference from our last year’s campaign India Ka Tyohaar. IPL is a catalyst that unites the nation and thats what the campaign communicates” explains Vyas.

The campaign has already rolled out digitally and soon will mark its presence on television.

TV will remain the most spent medium when it comes to marketing as per Vyas’ assessment. “50 per cent of the spends will go on TV whereas the remaining 50 per cent will be spent on radio, digital and print” he adds.

The campaign will have dubbed versions for the regional markets with the outdoors in key HSM markets providing recall support..

“HSM plays a vital role when it comes to the ratings and hence our key focus will be on that market. But the initiatives that we launch will cater to pan India audiences as IPL is popular in every nook and corner. Radio will see a lot of jingles while interactive campaign will orchestrate the digital media initiatives” asserts Vyas.

The campaign push and strategy will depend on the ICC T20 World Cup and India’s performance in the tournament.

“The cricketing mood will be determined by team India’s performance. So we will have to wait, watch, asses and then strategise. We have our plans chalked out, we will be present on our networks as well as on other networks too,”  reveals  Vyas.

“They have made great use of the generic situations, if you see the car that is broken is a yellow taxi and the man is wearing glasses.  It connects you to Bengal where there is an election. The inked man is still fresh in every mind and the music speaks about unity, happiness and equality. You cannot ignore the negatives if you want to portray a positive scenario and hence usage of this scenario is nothing controversial in my opinion. I think it’s a good anthem and the smaller videos complement it nicely,” says an executive creative director of a reputed creative agency.

“Whatever is done by us will have repercussions on the young children and that is why we have young children all throughout the video. We will perish soon, what matters is the future of the nation, the igniting minds,” concludes Vyas.
