  • ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ a hit in Pakistan; earns 50 lakh on Day 1

‘Dolly Ki Doli’ a hit in Pakistan; earns 50 lakh on Day 1

NEW DELHI: The film Dolly Ki Dolly starring Sonam Kapoor with Pulkit Samrt, Rajkumar Rao and Varun Sharma has become a major hit in Pakistan earning Rs 50 lakh in its opening day on the big screen.

Produced by Kinesis Films and Arbaaz Khan Productions, the film also did good business in the United Arab Emirates.

The hilarious comedy was screened at 35 cinemas on 65 plus screens (68-70 screens approximately in total including e-print and DCP) in cinemas nationwide.

The success of the film in Pakistan could be due to the wholesome family entertainment quotient and the song “Mere Naina Kafir Ho Gaye” by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan- a hightlight in the film.

Malaika Arora Khan’s item number and Saif Ali Khan’s guest appearance all add to the Bollywood masala the film has to offer.

Kinesis Films director Samir Gupta said, “The film has performed very well in Pakistan in week 2 despite the other releases and is continuing in 30 cinemas even in week 3. While Khoobsurat had the advantage of the popular Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, this has been a super effort by Sonam and the rest of the cast to bring in family audiences and keep them entertained.”

  • ‘Baby’…Not so cute!

    ‘Baby’…Not so cute!

MUMBAI: If you have an action hero, the best thing to do is let him loose and make an anti-terrorist film like Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty. Baby is a film in the same mould. Director Neeraj Pandey’s best so far has been A Wednesday! That established him as a compact storyteller on screen. A Wednesday! had a runtim of 104 minutes. Unfortunately, Baby accounts for that much in just its second half (out of total duration of 156 minutes)!

Espionage stories had their peak during the US-USSR cold war days; after that writers of such fiction have never found a formidable enough enemy for the US to write books on and, resultantly, there have been few movies on the theme.

In Indian films, the recent trend has been to make films on the fight against terrorism. But many of these films lack weight as the terrorists have no face and, to add to that, the casting lets the idea down. While our hero is a super star, the villains chosen as the face of terrorism are mere caricatures. The same problem persists with Baby. The strong box office faces, Akshay Kumar and Danny Denzongpa, are with India while those on the other side are junior artistes.

RAW is known to all. Ergo, those in power form an elite group of few officers, men and women, to work offline from the mainstream agencies and take on the terrorists and terrorist attacks in the offing before they happen. They call the team “Baby”. The star officer is Akshay. Like the trend set by 007 films and followed by most action films made lately, the tone is set with an action sequence: Akshay intervenes in a situation where one of his teammates is betrayed by another one. He can’t save his betrayed teammate nor can he liquidate the betrayer! So much for his elite tag! You know the film is going to falter more often as it progresses.

Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Shital Bhatia.

    Director: Neeraj Pandey.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Danny Denzongpa, Tapsee Pannu, Rana Daggubati, Anupam Kher, Kay Kay Menon, Madhurima Tuli, Rasheed Naz.

The elite anti-terrorist group’s elite agent, Akshay, embarks on various missions. He knows only to shoot and kill, so much so that because of his wild ways, no sensible colleague wants to work with him.

Kay Kay Menon is a dreaded terrorist who is serving time behind bars. He wants to be out and that is his condition to his people before he cooperates with them with the information they want from him. He is freed in the same old-fashioned way: the police van which is ferrying him to some place is ambushed. Menon then heads to Saudi Arabia where he is raising funds for further terrorist activities. Accompanying him in a fortress like place is the major Pakistani terror group head, Rasheed Naz (supposed to depict the infamous Pakistani terrorist chief, Hafiz Saeed).

Akshay, along with Rana Daggubati and Anupam Kher, embark on a mission to eliminate Kay Kay before he gives shape to his plans of terrorism in India. When they kill Kay Kay, they find Rasheed too, but instead of eliminating him, Akshay decides to take him to India as a trophy. This last plan to give him a total makeover and to smuggle him out of Saudi makes for some interesting viewing though it reminds of the film D Day where the agents smuggle Dawood (played by Rishi Kapoor) out of Pakistan.

The film tries to cram in too much and loses sense of length; the film could have done without the family track of Akshay. Some scenes are stretched to create anxiety among viewers which they don’t. Directorially, the film falls far short of Pandey’s previous films, A Wednesday! and Special 26. Editing is slack. Music and romance find no place and the one song the film has could also have been done away with. Cinematography is very good. Background score is effective in places.

Akshay dominates the film and it is a role tailormade for him; he does very well. Danny makes his presence felt merely with his expression in the absence of anything substantial to do. Tapsee Pannu is impressive in a brief role. Rana’s can best be described as a cameo appearance. Anupam Kher as a computer wizard does not quite convince. Rasheed makes an impact as the fanatic. Kay Kay is okay in a brief role.

Baby, coming as it does in the wake of Ek Tha Tiger and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, has nothing new to offer; also it falls short of the director’s earlier films. The film has more verbal footage rather than action which can be a put off for many including single screen audience. The film has a three-day weekend with Monday being Republic Day holiday to make the most of, though the opening response has been below par. All said, its box office prospects are limited.

    ‘Dolly Ki Doli’….Doli nahi uthi!

Producers: Malaika Arora Khan, Arbaaz Khan.

    Director: Abhishek Dogra.

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Manoj Joshi, Archana Puran Singh, Rajendra Kala and cameos by Malaika Arora Khan and Saif Ali Khan.

Cases of men posing as prospective grooms, marrying and vanishing with the bride’s jewellery and other belongings are a dime a dozen and reported regularly in newspapers. Dolly Ki Doli jumps on the idea and turns it around so that a woman does this vanishing act instead.

Sonam Kapoor has a ‘family’ which is always on the lookout for a suitor for her. The boys found for her are usually average, not much to look at and not really well-placed in jobs or on the social ladder. Sonam to them would look like a fairy! The ‘family’ consists of Manoj Joshi (posing as her father) with others posing as her brother, mother, grandmother, a family photographer and a pandit who decides on the earliest wedding muhurat.

The newspaper matrimonial are scanned, a suitable sucker is shortlisted and an approach made. Soon, after gauging up the prospective victim family’s resources, an early wedding date is fixed. The wedding done, it is time for honeymoon but Sonam would always have some reason to stall it: ekadashi vrat or woman’s problem and so on. However, honeymoon or not, she would do the traditional offering of a glass of milk, not only to her ‘husband’ but also to rest in the family. With everybody around rendered unconscious, the house would be wiped clean of all its valuables and the bride and her ‘family’ would vanish into thin air.

Sonam’s first victim is Rajkumar Rao, the son of a Haryanvi sugarcane planter. Then follows a montage of numerous victims until it is time to bring in Varun Sharma, a lad whose family paid a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to get him a 50, 000 a month job in an IT company! But, to her ire, Sonam is rejected by Varun’s mother, Archana Puran Singh. Sonam’s ego is hurt and she decides to pursue the boy and make him revolt against his mother! The plan works. The wedding takes place, followed by cleaning out of closets. But, somehow, the script fits in a problem for Sonam as somehow her earlier husband, Rajkumar drops in at this wedding.

Why did Sonam take to cheating people? The writer and director think it is time to add a thrilling third angle to the goings-on. There is a dashing kind of cop on her trail now. The cop, Pulkit Samrat, was not at all interested in taking up such a petty case but he changes his mind once he looks at the picture of the girl whose police file is titled ‘Looteri Dulhan’. It seems she is the love of his life who he ditched.

A decoy is planted for Sonam and her ‘family’. The royal prince of a Rajasthan kingdom of yore pastes posters in the town seeking a bride! The family is lured and meet up with the prince, Saif Ali Khan. The game is over for the ‘family’ as it is confronted by all three, Rajkumar, Varun as well as Pulkit. Some more situations follow before the charade comes to an end.

Finding an idea is fine but what needs talent is to turn it in to a taut and plausible script that a director just needs to convert on celluloid. But, even with a 98-minute run time, Dolly Ki Doli has no spark anywhere. The comedy is forced and the artistes fail to carry the film on their own, given mediocre direction and little by way of script. The film has one hummable track in Mere naina kafir hogaye.. Comedy falls flat most of the time.

Dolly Ki Doli is a nonstarter.

  • Sonam Kapoor dons 16 different bridal looks for a scene in ‘Dolly Ki Doli’

Sonam Kapoor dons 16 different bridal looks for a scene in ‘Dolly Ki Doli’

MUMBAI: The first poster of the film where Sonam Kapoor is dressed in a gorgeous lehenga with a leather jacket and liquor glass in hand has created a huge buzz amongst people and in fact after the release of other two posters, the first question which comes to everyone’s mind in is ‘Dolly Kiski’.

We do not know the answer to that question yet but what we have recently come to know is that the peppy diva Sonam Kapoor will be seen donning 16 different bridal looks just for one particular scene in the film.  In fact what we also hear is that Sonam as Dolly is someone who charmingly cons men into marrying her and then dupes them.

A source close to the team said, “There is a particular scene in which we show Sonam in different looks as a bride. In this scene she will be seen as a catholic bride, Maharashtrian bride, south Indian bride, Gujarati bride, muslim bride and the list goes on. It was a very tiring process that just for one scene there were so many looks but Sonam enjoyed it quite a lot.”

Well, donning so many bridal looks is definitely a wish come true for any girl!!

  • Sonam Kapoor to work opposite SRK in ‘Raees’?

Sonam Kapoor to work opposite SRK in ‘Raees’?

MUMBAI: After working with Fawad Khan in her last film Khoobsurat, Sonam Kapoor is set to work with the Khans of Bollywood.

While she has already been finalised for Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, opposite Salman Khan, it is rumoured that the actress will also be working with the king of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan in his upcoming movie Raees.

According to media reports, the 29-year old actress has been signed to play the lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Raees.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, Raees is Khan’s third movie with Farhan Akhtar. An action drama set in Gujarat, the film also stars Farhan Akhtar. Reportedly, while Khan plays the role of a bootlegger, Akhtar will be playing a cop.

As per the reports, talking about Salman Khan, Kapoor said, “its double dhamaal with Salman since he is in double role. I am super excited to work with him. I am not allowed to talk about it. You will see. He is looking good in the film.”

Sonam first shared the screen with the Dabangg star in her debut movie Saawariya in 2009.

“I am living a dream right now. The shooting of the movie has started. Salman is so handsome and such a fantastic and amazing person to work with. I am on cloud nine,” she added while talking to the media.

  • ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

    ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

MUMBAI: Khoobsurat borrows its basic plot from the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee film of the same name. Hrishikesh Mukherjee films were known for their simplicity and yet they appealed to all classes. His film was about a middleclass joint family where the matriarch of the house, Dina Pathak, runs her household with an iron fist and total domination. In the latest Khubsoorat, writer-director Shashanka Ghosh decides to give the simple Mukherjee film a ‘royal touch’ and massacres it royally.

Sonam Kapoor is a physiotherapist working with the Indian Premiere League helping the likes of Dhoni and Shehwag and some alien entity called Kapoor who is so much in pain, he refuses to go out to bat until this physiotherapist gives his leg an almost fatal jerk! Something that could have handicapped someone else has cured Mr Kapoor! He is fit enough to go out and hit the last winning six. One thought, each IPL team had its own physio, here, the ‘poor’ IPL has only one for all the teams.

Her credentials having been established and her reputation having travelled far and wide, she is invited to be an in-house physio to some ex-royal in Rajasthan. This ex-royal, Aamir Raza Hussain, has been wheelchair-bound since his accident ten years ago. He has so far dismissed about 40 physios trying to cure him. The fact is he doesn’t want to be cured. He holds himself responsible for the death of his 20-year-old-son, who died in a sports car crash that he had gifted him.

Sonam enters the house and falls in love with the palace, its opulence and the luxury of the room assigned to her. This is just the beginning as more falling in love is yet to happen; which is, falling in love with the prince, Fawad Afzal Khan. Towards this end, her mother, Kirron Kher, encourages her every day on their regular Skype chats; this film may have turned Mukherjee’s idea of Khoobsurat from middle-class to royal while, at the same time, trying to make it contemporary.

Sonam’s idea of physiotherapy for the reluctant royal is to take him around his gardens in a whirlwind wheelchair ride. The queen, Ratna Pathak, disapproves of her from day one and keeps making faces day after day. The prince Fawad keeps hovering around her despite being a very busy businessman. Earlier, it is established that he is engaged to be married to another royal, Aditi Rao Hydari.

While Aamir Raza is getting cured merely by wheeling at jet speed around his palace and Pathak keeps making same faces of disapproval for Sonam, Fawad, and Sonam keep getting attracted to each other until they graduate to their first kiss.

Comparing this film in any way to Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat is a sacrilege. The film and its makers have no sense of script, little sense of direction, and none for music. To sum it up, they have scant sense of filmmaking. The dialogue is pedestrian. Being a love story, the musical score needed to be strong but turns out to be poor and just one song, Naina…, is hummable. Editing is poor.

Sonam plays the lead in this, her home production. She is a let-down acting-wise, looks-wise and dressing-wise. The makeup makes her look much older. Her clumsy, loud character seems to have been built around My Fair Lady; she is uncouth, which she blames on being half Punjabi from her mother’s side! Fawad, otherwise, known to be a very natural and endearing actor from what one sees of him on TV, is wasted; he is made to carry just one-and-a-half expressions throughout the film. Fawad’s greatest asset, his smile, is at a premium here. Ratna’s casting, in a role her mother played in the 1980 original, is supposed to be the casting coup, but backfires with poor etching of her character. Aamir Raza is turned into caricatures.

Producers: Rhea Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sidharth Roy Kapoor

    Director: Shashanka Ghosh.

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Afzal Khan, Ratna Pathak, Aamir Raza Hussain.

    ‘Daawat-e-Ishq’: No thanks…

Yash Raj Films have been trying new subjects for some time now. With Daawat-e-Ishq, they try to bring back a Muslim background love story. But, this is a love story with an angle of dowry and getting back at dowry seekers. It also tries to juxtapose two prominent Muslim cultures, those of Hyderabad and Lucknow.

Parineeti Chopra is a shoe shop sales girl in Hyderabad even as she continues to study for she is a topper who wants to specialise in shoe designing. Her father, Anupam Kher, is a clerk in the high court two years short of retirement. He is honest and hence, of limited means.

It is time to look for a suitor for Parineeti. The problem for Anupam and Parineeti is that, her qualification does not count for anything to the boys’ families. The amount of dowry is what matters to them. This leads to a chain of rejections for her. Kher has a limit of 15 lakh but the gap is too much between what he can manage and what the boys’ parents demand. Since dowry is a bad word, one boy’s parents ask Kher to ‘help’ their son go to the US for further studies; all he needs is 80 lakh for that purpose.

Parineeti is an aggressive girl and keeps throwing out such parents. She decides that marriage is not for her and, instead, embarks on a mission to trap such families who demand dowries and have them sent to jail. Kher takes some convincing but finally agrees to the plan. Doing this in their native Hyderabad would be too risky so their choice falls on Lucknow.

The father daughter duo go for a total makeover, pose as millionaires from Dubai and check in at a five star Lucknow hotel. Next, they shortlist grooms from a marriage website and invite them for a meeting. A camera has been placed to record the proceedings of all such interviews. One of them happens to be Aditya Roy Kapur. He runs the city’s famous restaurant known for its kebabs, biryani etc with century old recipes inherited from his forefathers.

Kapur is a simple hearted only son of his parents, popular with his customers as well as all around the city. For wedding, his parents’ wish list would cost Kher a cool 40 lakh. Parineeti agrees to the proposal and decides the nikaah would take place in two days’ time. However, Kapur wants three days to meet and know Parineeti better. After all her idea is to marry and then file a complaint with the police and demand a huge sum to settle the matter.

The plan works, Kher and Parineetti walk off with a huge loot for Parineeti to pursue her dream of studying designing in the US. But, what she did not on count has happened. She has fallen in love with Kapur in those three days.

The problem with this film is that it takes over half an hour to come to the real story before it sets up the background for Parineeti’s plan of taking on a dowry seeker. And when it happens, there are no twists and turns and lacks in drama of any sort. The approach to direction and storytelling is lacklustre. There are no highlights. The film has a catchy musical score with a blend of old world charm. Dialogue is routine. There is little about performances that stays with a viewer. Parineeti is her usual self. Kapur is over the top, loud being his idea of projecting simplicity. Kher is okay.

Daawat-e-Ishq is a routine fare below expectations.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Habib Faisal.

Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anupam Kher.

  • After Priyanka, Sonam roped in for a biopic

After Priyanka, Sonam roped in for a biopic

MUMBAI: After the success of Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom, and Irrfan Khan’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sonam Kapoor seems to be the next in line.

As biopics seem to be trending in bollywood, buzz is that the fiery actress is going to play the legendry Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil on big screen. The film would revolve around Amrita’s life, love, friends and mentors.

Born in 1913 to a Punjabi-Sikh father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother, Amrita Sher-Gil was a pre-independence painter and one of the most prolific female painters of the pre-Independence era. Referred to as the ‘Frida Kahlo of India’, the legendary painter lived in France and India and died in 1941. The actress is in talk with the painter’s family for the same.

Sonam Kapoor is currently busy promoting her latest project Khoobsurat with co-star Fawad Khan. The movie also stars veteran actresses Ratna Pathak Shah and Kirron Kher in lead.

Set in Rajasthan, Khoobsurat is the story of Dr. Mili Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor)- a middle class physiotherapist from Delhi. Mili is sent to Rajasthan to treat the paraplegic Shekhar Rathore, Raja of Sambalgarh. Over the course of her stay in the mahal, Mili charms the Rathore family, especially young Vikram Singh Rathore- with her free spirit and funny antics.

The film, which is a remake of Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s 1980 hit film of similar name starring Rekha is directed by Shashanka Ghosh and is slated to hit the silver screens on 19 September.

  • Gender discrimination apparent in comments on Pak artistes in Indian films, says Pak website

Gender discrimination apparent in comments on Pak artistes in Indian films, says Pak website

NEW DELHI: Even as several artistes from Pakistan are striking it rich in Bollywood, the social media in Pakistan is full of criticism about them.

Two recent entrants are Fawad Afzal Khan in Khoobsoorat and Humaima Mallick in Raja Natwarlal.

The response has been full of reproach.  Some pages on Facebook also have abusive remarks from their own country fellows especially Humaima Mallick who is facing discontentment for recording bold scenes in her upcoming movie with Imran Hashmi.

The ‘horrendous condemnation’ on Humaima Mallick is reminder of Veena Malik’s social media trial from which she terribly failed to sustain, according to Pakistan’s MoreMag.

Interestingly, Fawad Khan has received some praise from Pakistanis as he was already popular in the country. He has got some successful dramas in his fleet like Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzaar hai, with the latter being telecast on Zee’s Zindagi channel.

Describing it as sad, MoreMag said the other reason may be gender discrimination.

When Humaima kisses Imran Hashmi, she has to face outrage and there is a lot of hue and cry for not preserving the dignity of Pakistani culture but when Fawad does the same with Sonam Kapoor, people enjoy it, the website points out, referring to these as ‘patriarchal behaviours’.

Imran Abbas with his charming and appealing looks also gained much popularity on social media especially with girls. With some of romantic scenes with Bipasha Basu, he definitely nailed it and therefore is enjoying healthy appreciation on social media. Some people also criticised him for being too bold.

Social media is already a terrifying place for celebrities from all around the globe, whether it is for Bieber or Kim Kardashian, says the report, adding they all have been thrashed badly by the people for no considerable reason.

‘Social media has become a place where people dispose of all their frustrations,’ the report concludes.
