  • Star Gold gears up to premiere Salman Khan’s ‘PRDP’ on 14 February

Star Gold gears up to premiere Salman Khan’s ‘PRDP’ on 14 February

MUMBAI: Salman Khan has been a fan magnet with people flocking to theatres or for that matter on television, whenever his movie is on. Riding on this wave, Star Gold, which had earlier premiered the star’s previous hits like Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, is now gearing up for the world television premiere of his latest flick – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP).

The movie will be premiered on Star Gold and Star Gold HD on 14 February.

According to a source close to the development, Star India acquired the satellite rights of the movie for Rs 50 crore. “Just like Salman’s previous movie’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s satellite rights commanded a price tag of Rs 50 crore, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has also been picked up for the same amount,” the source tells Indiantelevision.com.

In an earlier conversation with Indiantelevision.com, Star India Hindi movie business executive vice president and general manger Hemal Jhaveri has said that in most cases, channels acquire satellite rights for a period of 10 years from the production house for every film.

For big ticket movies, Star Gold concentrates more on high sponsorship value. A senior media planning executive, on condition of anonymity, says, “For a big movie like PRDP, the title sponsor’s package will be close to Rs 1 crore. The channel tries aggressively to have at least one title and one associate sponsor on board. The associate sponsor package is sold at a price of approximately Rs 65 lakh. Major part of the air-time is sold as a part of the package and hence the 10 second ad slots generate minuscule revenue.”

It may be recalled that Star Gold premiered Bajrangi Bhaijaan last year on 11 October and according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India’s all India ratings, Star Gold emerged as the number one movie channel in the Hindi movie genre riding on the back of the movie’s world television premiere.

As reported earlier by this website, 74.5 million people across the country tuned into the television premiere of Bajrangi Bhaijaan on Star Gold, which is close to three times the number of people that watched the movie in theatres.

Whether PRDP will manage to create the same magic, only time will tell.

PRDP saw Khan reuniting with director Sooraj Barjatiya after a span of 16 long years and playing his quintessentially endearing character of Prem. The movie also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Swara Bhaskar, Armaan Kohli and Deepak Dobriyal.

  • Parle MTV Junkyard cries out a new slogan ‘Dunk That Junk’

Soon, the dump trucks across Mumbai and Delhi will be sporting a colourful graffiti look with a strong messaging of Dunk That Junk. How does this help? Littering is a bad habit that needs to be stopped through constant reminders. The colourful dump trucks will be a persistent reminder of the plethora of undesignated dumping grounds across cities. Besides strong communication on air and interactive push on social media, the graffiti dump trucks will be a bold and unexpected messaging to the city to stop littering and Dunk That Junk where it belongs viz. garbage bin.

MTV is on a mission to turn the dirty streets into art spaces, and it has partnered with Parle Products to drive this initiative across cities. Supporting the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Parle MTV Junkyard Project recently launched a war cry across social media with a slogan of Dunk That Junk. A series of viral videos have flooded the social media featuring ace bollywood and TV celebrities dunking the junk through interesting challenges like dizzy dunk, trampoline jump dunk, blindfold dunk etc. Shahruhk Khan, Farhan Aktar, Varun Dhawan, Sonam Kapoor and many others have extended their support to this campaign – which has also received massive participation from digital natives through user generated videos and has garnered overwhelming 1 mn interactions. Giving the dump trucks a makeover is an extension of Dunk That Junk initiative. The regular dumper trucks will be sporting colourful graffiti that shouts out to Dunk That Junk in the dustbin. These colourfully branded Ghanta Gaadis were unveiled today in the capital with much fanfare by the esteemed member of Parliament, Meenakshi Lekhi who was joined by bollywood star Randeep Hooda.

Speaking about the colourful dump trucks, Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi said, “India?s biggest strength are its young people and I truly believe they have the power to make change happen. Our honourable Prime Minister has also called upon our youth to contribute in the development of the country and I am glad to be a part of such events which are the right efforts in this direction. However, they need to be spoken to in a language they understand and I am delighted that youth brands like MTV are coming forward to deliver a serious message in a fun and interesting manner to mobilize young people to do something for their country.  The Junkyard Project is a great way to get them involved in the process and help make a Swachh CP and a Swachh Bharat.”

Expressing his support for the initiative, Chairman New Delhi Municipal Corporation Naresh Kumar said, “There’s a lot being done today to raise awareness about the need to make our country clean and beautiful. Seeing our honourable Prime Minister Modiji’s vision of Swachcha Bharat coming alive in such a fun, interesting and clutter-breaking manner is definitely going to motivate a lot of young people across the country to do their bit towards making India a clean and healthy nation. And I’m delighted that we have made a beginning right here in our beautiful city of Delhi.”

Speaking about the initiative, Viacom18 EVP business head English and youth cluster Ferzad Palia said, “At MTV, we have always supported causes and issues that matter. As the ultimate word on the youth, we know how to reach out to, speak to and communicate with the young people to get them motivated about the issues that affect India. And, state of cleanliness is an issue that comes right on the top of that list. Our mission is to transform the dirty junkyards into beautiful art-spaces – the exact opposite of filth. The 300+ college outreach is going to widen the footprint of action on ground. Built on the cusp of Music and Art and supported by the ace Bollywood celebrities, Parle MTV The Junkyard Project is our attempt to drive higher conversations around do-not-litter; that are backed by solid action on-ground.  So, don’t be a punk and Dunk That Junk right now.”

Parle Products GM Pravin Kulkarnii commented, “Being a brand consumed by all sections of the society, we at Parle have continuously strived to spread awareness among the citizens to contribute to the society’s wellbeing. Our Litter Free campaign stands testimony to our endeavour in extending our support towards creating a clean and healthy society. Associating with this project, we aim at taking forward our efforts and reaching out to and helping our young consumers practice the art of cleanliness.”

Joining in to support to initiative, bollywood star Randeep Hooda said, “Who knew cleaning up could be so much fun? MTV really knows how to make the most mundane of things seem exciting. Littering is bad, but anything that requires people to change their habits is not easy to communicate, especially when the people in question are young. Parle MTV The Junkyard Project is a fantastic project that’s interactive and fun, and not preachy. MTV is engaging its fan base in a unique manner and mobilizing them for a good social cause. Let’s take #DunkThatJunk challenges – they are simple, interactive and fun. No wonder the videos are trending on social media. I urge everyone, all you young people out there, to come and support MTV and Parle in its efforts to make India a shining example of how to keep our country clean. And, don’t be a punk, Dunk That Junk. ”

Parle MTV The Junkyard Project is an attempt to get the youth to take a stand on ‘cleanliness’ and also aims to action change on-ground through clean-up drives that are built on music and art. Taking their Litter Free campaign forward, Parle Products has partnered with MTV to create the largest youth clean up movement that will seamlessly integrate across screens including TV, web, mobile and on-ground to mobilize the youth of the country. This unique clean-up movement by MTV has also won critical acclaim and been awarded the Gold at the recently held Appies Asia Conference, as one of the most effective pro-social activity across Asia.

Making the cleaning-up fun and driving conversations, MTV has launched a war cry Dunk That Junk. Bollywood and television celebrities have joined the movement by gamifying the slogan and challenging each other to ‘Dunk That Junk’ through interesting challenges and nominating others to participate in order to drop garbage where it belongs – in the bin! The core of this initiative is to turn the dirty into beauty. Parle and MTV have tied up with 300 colleges across India and multiple graffiti and street art experts to convert chosen undesignated dumping grounds to beautiful graffiti art projects and utility areas.

As with everything, MTV has its own twist on making even the activity of cleaning up the city a lot of fun. MTV has launched Parle MTV The Junkyard Project under the umbrella of MTV Act, which is MTV’s pro-social platform that lives 365 days and strives to create awareness on various social causes.

  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo…

    Prem Ratan Dhan Payo…

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is about palace intrigue, conspiracy and, as is the wont with Rajshri movies, reconciliation and happy endings. Despite being based on a royal background, the essence remains the same as all SoorajBarjatya films: family and values. This is also the costliest venture Rajshri has produced.

Salman Khan aka Prem is a street-smart Rambhakta in Ayodhya and loves to perform the role of Ram during Ram Leela. As in most films, Prem has a sidekick in Deepak Dobriyal. Salman Khan aka Vijay Singh is the crown prince of faraway place calledPritampur and due for his Rajyabhishek (crowning).

Vijay has royal bearings and makes sure he shows it. One of the routines he follows is to have a sabre dual with his step brother, Neil NitinMukesh. Neil is much influenced negativelyin the palace by ArmaanKohli, a sort of major domo. Also, at odds with Vijay are his two step sisters, SwaraBhaskar and Ashika Bhatia, who want a share in the royal property. Swara ekes out a living as a teacher while Ashika is a student and good at playing football.

Neilconspires with Armaan to remove Vijay from the scene so that he can usurp all the property; he has also been made to believe by Armaan that all his bills are to be sanctioned by elder brother Vijay. Vijay always clears all the bills but Armaan makes Neil believe otherwise thus creating a rift between brothers.

Though about royalty, the film takes a contemporary approach. But we don’t know why Vijay travels in an old style stagecoach while the rest of the people use limousines. That is probably to make it easy for Armaan and Neil to bump him off! So, the coach rider jumps off the coach locking Vijay inside and the coach falls off a cliff.

In comes Prem, put in place by the only loyalist, AnupamKher, a diwan from Vijay’s father’s time. Vijay has survived but is badly hurt. While he is being treated by doctors in some secret hideout, thanks to AnupamPrem is asked to pretend to be Vijay. Prem has a reason to accept because he has secretly fallen in love with Sonam Kapoor, a princess from another state, who is due in Pritampur for the occasion since she is the fiancé of Vijay.

Sonam wants out of the impending marriage because she and Vijay are poles apart.Prem takes it upon himself to correct her misgivings about Vijay by being very nice to her. After all, he is the Rajshri hero who only has other people’s best at heart even if he has to make sacrifices. He also uses his goodness to win over the estranged stepsisters promising them equal share in all the royal wealth. No matter it does not belong to him!

It is time to contend with the evildoers, Armaan and Neil, who have kidnapped Vijay from the hideout. For whatever reason, they take Prem to the spot where Vijay is captive. Armaan is now ready to betray even Neil and plans to let Vijay and Neil get into sabre fight till one is killed.

Sonam’s job meanwhile is to sing songs with Salman and help him play the replacement Vijay with conviction by reminding him of her and Vijay’s past encounter. Of course, by now Sonam has also fallen in love with Prem and become demonstrative in expressing her love for him. All the negative feelings of various character are neutralized by Prem and he gets the trophy.

PremRatanDhanPayo is unnecessarily long. The first half is as good as irrelevant as nothing interesting happens and the leisurely narrative coupled with loose script make the process slow and boring. The film shows some promise in the latter parts of the second half but again becomes predictable with a routine climax. The SoorajBarjatya touch is missing here and one also notices a few glitches here and there. There is an overdose of songs which are placed at random. However, the film has generally good score. Four of the songs have popular appeal. Sets are good and are well exploited by the cinematographer.

The film is all about Salman and he dominates the screen throughout. Though the Vijay part is brief compared to Prem, Salman juxtaposes both parts very well. What ails the film is the total lack of chemistry between Salman and Sonam and the latter’s limitations as an actor, the fact which makes the romance hard to believe. Anupam lends credibility to his character of a loyal diwan. Neil has a smaller role and limited scope. Deepak, Swara and Ashika are okay. Armaan fails to make a mark.

PremRatanDhanPayo may interest audiences away from metros with multiplex crowd soon tapering out. The film has opened to full houses all over and is expected to cross 40 crore mark on day one (released on Thursday), but it faces an uphill task with a price tag of 135 crore.
