  • ‘Pro-Wrestling League will do for wrestling what IPL did for cricket:’ Anurag Thakur

‘Pro-Wrestling League will do for wrestling what IPL did for cricket:’ Anurag Thakur

NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) changed the dynamics of how the game of cricket was perceived and played, not to forget the dollops of entertainment quotient it added.

Amongst the various sports gaining prominence in India, is the game of wrestling. The maiden Pro-Wrestling League’s (PWL) second semi-final match at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi, saw Haryana Hammers fight against CDR Punjab Royals. Haryana Hammers makes an entry to the finals, which commenced today with Revanta’s Mumbai Garuda.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) Secretary and Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur, who was present at the semi-final tie, lauded the wrestlers taking part in the inaugural Pro Wrestling League (PWL). He said, “Like the Indian Premier League changed the cricket scenario in India, I am sure Pro Wrestling League will also do the same for wrestling in India. The participating wrestlers have shown such competitive spirit, kudos to them. The atmosphere at the stadium can be compared to the India vs Pakistan tie in cricket.”

What’s more, Bollywood stars have always been closely connected with different kinds of sport in India, be it through making films on sports or having a shareholding in a team.

Expectedly, the PWL has got the glamour quotient in addition to providing Indian wrestlers with a great platform to showcase their talent. From CDR Punjab Royals team owner Dharmendra to actress Sonali Bendre, the star power was also strong.

Bendre, who supports her husband Goldie Behl’s team – Haryana Hammers, said, “I had a great time watching the semi-final match. My whole family is following the league closely, right from my son to the elders. I truly feel that Pro Wrestling League based on the spirit of ‘Khel Fauladi’ is a great platform for wrestlers to show their prowess.”

The wrestling area had almost 5,000 fans to see the second semi-final.

Zee TV slots ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’ season 2 at 9.30 pm

MUMBAI: Come 12 December and Zee TV is all set to launch the second season of kid’s reality series India’s Best Dramebaaz. The show will be aired on Saturday and Sunday in the 9.30 pm time slot.

The channel has roped in Surf Excel as the presenting sponsor and Patanjali Dantkanti as the co-powered by sponsor for the show.

Speaking about the format of the show’s second season, Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi said, “The new season of India’s Best Dramebaaz looks out for children with an ability to diffuse any tension and instantly brightens your mood with their ability to entertain. The format will be same with minor changes. This time we are giving them feedback in a very nice manner. We are calling them for homework and also helping them on how they can make it better.”

He further added, “Through this season, we have a special concept of piggy bank (Gulak) wherein as they perform their points will go to the bank. If they leave the show at any point, they will have the opportunity to encash the money and take it back with them. There will never be a sad moment for the kids. Besides starting with Lil Champs itself, we made sure that the kids get exposure to the main industry. Even here our aim is to get as many guests on the show as possible so that we can give the kids more exposure.”

The channel has even taken into consideration feedback from the last season and made changes in the show. One major change was to tone down the bold content. “We have cut down the shooting schedules. Also, we have seen to it that kids don’t face any parental pressure and perform the way they want to,” Hejmadi said.

In first season, Zee TV aired the show in the 9 pm time slot. Speaking about the time shift, this season he informed, “We have seen that 9:30 pm is a good time because family aggregates more nicely post this time. We got enough views and feedback for the 9.30 pm time slot. That’s the reason we brought the non-fiction time to 9:30 pm.”

India’s Best Dramebaaz is meant to bring alive the kids talent in the most endearing manner to the audiences.

The key TG of the show is women, kids and teens and both the communication as well as the touch points have been arrived at keeping the nature of the show and the TG and target markets in mind.

The audio – visual blitzkrieg will be further amplified via the digital, print, on ground and radio platforms. Digital will not merely be restricted to promos but will have customised Dubsmashes created by Zee stars that will take them to their ‘dramebaazi’ days as kids. This will be amplified through the Zee TV social media clout.

The show launches at the cusp of the holiday season and mall activations will be used to get the kids and parents live the ‘dramebaazi’ quotient by a simple ‘wheel of dramebaazi’ game. Additionally, radio promotions will ensure that a complete 360 surround is created to ensure maximum tune-ins.

Speaking about the role that rural data will play in content creation, Hejmadi asserted, “We used to go to small areas and test the content. We always make sure that our content is acceptable across the nation. Having that is an  acknowledgement of rural popularity. We will continue to look at the patterns. So, the content creation will remain the same.”

  • Sonali Bendre’s fiction debut on Life OK

Sonali Bendre’s fiction debut on Life OK

MUMBAI: It was in late 2011 when viewers were introduced to a new Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC). And now, after almost three years, Star Network’s Life OK is ready to challenge the established ones in the genre.

Reasons being the ‘differentiated content’, the channel prouds itself of, and shows like Saubhagyavati Bhava’, ‘Savdhaan India’ and ‘Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev’. And recently, with shows like ‘Laut Aao Trisha’ and its biggest dance property, ‘Dare 2 Dance’, it has set a benchmark for itself in the GEC space.

With the channel focusing on social issues like domestic violence and crime in a big way, it is set to highlight the issue of infidelity in its upcoming show, ‘Ajeeb Daastaan Hain Ye’.

In association with the queen of television, Balaji Telefilm’s Ekta Kapoor, the story highlights the tryst of a woman who is estranged by her husband and is made to break out of her inhibitions in quest of finding happiness for her loved ones. The show marks the debut of Sonali Bendre in the fictional genre. She will play the role of the female protagonist along with other stars like Apurva Agnihotri and Harsh Chhaya.

It highlights the journey of a tenacious woman Shobha (Bendre) who fights against all odds for her family and their well-being, who was happy and content in her own little world until she was left devastated after her politician husband, Samarth (Chhaya) was put behind the bars for breach of information.

Overnight, she was left holding the reigns of her family in the aftermath of her husband’s conducts. While trying to collect all pieces and settle, she ends up meeting Vikram (Agnihotri), a coffee shop owner who hires her as his assistant. Apart from dealing with difficulties at home, she also faces her galling boss at work.

The channel wanted a high impact cast, Life OK EVP and general manager Ajit Thakur reasons of getting Bendre on-board. He says: “We needed a woman who is very elegant, strong and yet very homely. She is a mother and wife also in real life.”

Thakur further goes on to say that the show talks about women’s journey towards independence. “It is a matured friendship that is shown between two characters.”

It was Kapoor’s concept which the channel took forward. Set for a finite series, it will be aired for six-eight months (120-150 episodes).

Kapoor believes that relatable characters and diverse concepts are two key ingredients of all her shows. “Ajeeb Daataan Hain Ye captures the story of Shobha who becomes a ‘hero’ for her family after she surmounts harsh realities of life. I am looking forward to my association with Life OK to bring forth this grand venture through an interesting storyline.”

Bendre revealed that initially she was little sceptical about taking up a fiction show until Kapoor narrated the story to her and then there was no looking back. “The strength of the character and how she faces her life head on is what appealed to me .The fact that instead of being treated like a doormat she picks up her life and decides to have a fresh start is what resonated with me,” she points out.

With a heavy 360 degree marketing campaign, the channel is not going to leave any stone unturned to create buzz around the show. Moreover, the promos of the show are already on air and will also be shown in theatres during the release of Bang Bang.

It is set to hit television screens from 7 October every five days a week at 9.30 pm. About the slot, Thakur believes that all slots are competitive and 9.30 pm is the highest viewership slot. The show will replace ‘Tumhari Pakhi’ which will now air at 8.30 pm followed by ‘Laut Aao Trisha’ at 9 pm. It is going to face neck-neck competition with ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ on Star Plus, ‘Qubool Hai’ on Zee TV, ‘Bigg Boss 8’ on Colors, ‘Hum Hain Na’ on Sony Entertainment Television and ‘Badi Door Se Aaye Hai’ on Sab.

To get male audiences also on-board, the channel plans to launch a comedy show at 10 pm followed by ‘Savdhaan India’ at 10.30 pm.

Normally in a fiction show, sponsors are locked once ratings are out, but in this case, it has already got a presenting sponsor and powered by sponsor on-board.

  • Anurag Basu as third Judge on India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj

Anurag Basu as third Judge on India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj

MUMBAI: The Award winning Director will join Sonali Bendre and Victor on the Judge’s Panel of the show!

Joining the panel as the third judge on Zee TV’s India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj is the renowned director Anurag Basu. Having made the Oscar nominated masterpiece Barfi, this will be his second outing as a judge on a reality show; his first being Zee TV’s India’s Best Draamebaaz.

Having sensitively addressed mature themes through his films, Basu is known for getting the best out of his actors. While he is quite a task-master when it comes to work, his sense of humor is something that will make the contestants feel at ease while auditioning in front of him. Having been in the industry for decades, Anurag comes with immense understanding of gauging an actor’s abilities and selecting the right kind of talent.

Talking about his association with the show, Anurag said, “As a director, I could connect with the idea of Cinestars Ki Khoj which is to search for the most promising acting talent in the country and provide them with a platform on national television to showcase their acting ability and creativity. I think the pool of talent we have in our country needs that, given how difficult it is for a talented outsider to make an inroad into the industry and land a suitable role. When I was approached to come on the show as a judge, I took it up as I felt it would be a great opportunity to come in touch with fresh talent, new ideas and the contestants could benefit from my insights and experience. This is an extension of my work with Zee TV that started with India’s Best Dramebaaz.”

A little unhappy about joining the show late, he added, “I was away in South Africa for the shoot of my forthcoming film. Would have liked to be a part of the journey right from the outset ideally.”

Apart from judging a reality show the second time, Anurag was glad to have been paired with Sonali Bendre- with who he has worked in the past. Ensuring a lot of dhamaal and great potential, Anurag will soon be seen having a blast alongside two judges and the anchor of the show – Hussain Kwajerwala!

Stay tuned to Cera India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj powered by Glam Up, Every Saturday and Sunday at 9 PM, Only on Zee TV!

  • Lights, camera, action: The hunt is on again

Lights, camera, action: The hunt is on again

MUMBAI: Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth, but when has that ever stopped anyone from dreaming big?

One look around ourselves and there are enough and more examples of people who rose above and broke the various shackles which restraints one to fly high. Take one-time rice packer from Haryana Subhash Chandra, for instance, who was written off by many but rose from the ashes like a Phoenix to prove his critics wrong.

Maybe that is why the country’s largest Media & Entertainment powerhouse he built from the scratch believes in giving people a platform to make their dreams, a reality. The country which has unlimited talent pool has suddenly discovered it all thanks to non-fictional shows. Today everyone can dance, sing or act!

From Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa years ago to recent Dance India Dance, Zee has launched numerous platforms for people to awe the world with its gift. But the ultimate goal for many who come here is to be seen not only on the small screen but the big screen as well. In a country where films are churned out every Friday, everyone wants to be a Shah Rukh Khan or a Madhuri Dixit.

So, get your act together, Zee is back with Cinestar Ki Khoj. The non-fiction show will once again see the actor in all come to life as millions will be auditioned across the country to get the big ticket.

The show which has had two seasons earlier in 2004 and 2006 (this one, not so successful) will give a break not only to the channel but people as well who have had an overdose of DID. “We wanted to bring something new to the platform which was/is homegrown and part of our DNA,” says the channel’s programming head Namit Sharma.

Agrees a media planner who says that it was a good decision by the channel as the viewers had enough of dance and singing on the small screen.

One had to go through four layers of filtration at the auditions, which took place in 18 cities across the country, only to be selected as top 16 and judged by Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Victor and Sonali Bendre. The new judges on the show will have a helping hand with a new mentor or ‘Bollywood buddy’ from the industry. The first ‘buddy’ is none other than Parineeti Chopra who will be seen in the first two episodes followed by Ayushman Khurana.

The actors revealed so far by the channel were chosen because of their non-filmy background. Interestingly, Khurana was rejected on the same platform in 2003 when he auditioned to enter the world of glamour.

On his being rejected then, Khurana says, “Today’s Bollywood is very different from that of 10 years ago. It’s experimenting not only with scripts but star cast as well. It’s the golden era and there are a lot of opportunities for the talent.”

The winners who will have to showcase their talent in comedy, drama, dancing etc will get a chance to appear as lead actors in a film for which the channel is already in talks with various production houses.

“We want to shape the talent and give it a future,” says Sharma.

The marketing of the show is divided into three phases. The first promos reveal the judges and the two mentors. The next will be to reveal the 16 contestants.

The show is a big property for the channel and hence, is demanding a high ad rate as well. As per sources, the channel is asking for a premium rate (around Rs 2 lakh) for a 10 second ad slot whereas its other offerings have gone for a lakh or so. “Although, one would think that the long gap and Zee’s fresh approach will help it rake in the moolah but that may not be the case. Given the current slot ratings, I don’t think advertisers will be ready to shell out so much especially during mid-season,” says a planner.

Cera Sanitaryware is the title sponsor whereas the show will be powered by Glam-Up. We Chat is the technology partner while a couple of associate sponsors have also come on board. The channel aims to generate around 60-80 crore from the property.

“The format has to be interesting enough for people to watch. Even though Ankita Lokhande came into limelight with Cinestar Ki Khoj, people don’t really remember the show, but know of Ankita because of the work she did post the talent hunt. So, the channel needs to keep this in mind,” opines the media planner while stating that the show should be able to get the ratings the channel is expecting from it.

The show which will run for 13 weeks will go on air from 5 July, every weekend at 9 pm.
