Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara: Akshay Kumar all the way

MUMBAI: Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaa is touted as a sequel to the producers’ earlier film, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The claim is a deception and a ploy to cash in on the popularity of the earlier film. Supposedly based on a chapter from the don Dawood Ibrahim’s life, it is just another love triangle.

Akshay Kumar has killed senior dons and attained the mantle of the ultimate don of Mumbai. The remaining local area gangsters are also rendered ineffective by him thereby creating enemies waiting to kill him. His main opponent is Mahesh Manjrekar. Akshay has shifted his base to Middle East but still rules the underworld of Mumbai from there. Akshay had long back picked a young boy, Imran Khan, and nurtured him into a perfect daredevil.

Having neutralised all his enemies, he plans to visit Mumbai again; the agenda being to eliminate Manjrekar once and for all. The task to eliminate him is passed onto Imran and another henchman, Chetan Hansraj, who botch it up as Manjrekar outsmarts them.

But there is a distraction in his life and plans. A khiladi with women otherwise, for the first time in his life, he falls in love. The woman is Sonakshi Sinha, but he is unaware that his own protégé, Imran, also loves the same woman. The film, which was fun so far, starts going downhill as the love triangle plays up and the villain in Akshay starts getting more and more cruel, illogical, stretched and dull.

As the film continues with its love story of two men and one woman, there are songs and dream sequences and poor Sonakshi ends up being in the imagination songs of both the heroes. There seem to be no better, more interesting ways known to the writer to fill up the reels, notwithstanding the tedium it causes to the viewers. This is until Akshay suddenly dreams up a plot to lure Manjrekar out of his den: to spread the rumour that Akshay and Imran have fallen out as both crave the same woman! As invincible as the tales of Dawood Ibrahim have made him, Akshay, supposedly playing his character, takes on Manjrekar in the middle of a busy Mumbai road with traffic in full flow from both directions.

    Producers: Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor.
    Direction: Milan Luthria.
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonali Bendre, Mahesh Manjrekar, Pitobash Tripathy, Mushtaq Khan, Chetan Hansraj, Tiku Talsania.

Having killed his main adversary now is the time for the love triangle to reach some sort of conclusion. Pitobash Tripathy, Imran’s childhood buddy, finds a place in Akshay’s car. He has been brought here to ‘unwittingly’ convey that Imran also loves Sonakshi. Akshay being don and Imran being his underling knows only one way to end the love triangle: by killing Imran. There is some one-sided action as Imran refuses to raise his hand on his mentor and goes on to take a police bullet meant for Akshay on himself.

The film is okay while Akshay holds the fort on his own for much of first half of the film. It is also okay with Imran’s entry scene. But enter Sonakshi and the film loses its track. Milan Luthria is not in his element and has also taken the viewer for granted at many places. Characters play Shoaib, Aslam and Jasmine speak of ‘Paap’ and cite ‘Ram’ and ‘Ravan’, which is odd. Nor does the film create the aura of the era it deals with. Rajat Arora has done well with his dialogue writing, especially the ones penned for Akshay. Musically, the film has an entertaining number in Tayyab Ali pyar ka dushman…. A hit number borrowed from Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony and scored by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The other good songs are: Tu hi khwahish… And Yeh tune kya kiya… Editing needed to be crisper. Photography is good.

The film is an Akshay Kumar vehicle and he makes the most of it; dressed like a mid 20th century American gangster with jelled hairstyle, dark glasses and suit without tie, he carries a certain gait in his walk. This is one of his better performances. Imran is good in certain parts. Sonakshi is okay. Pitobash is good as usual. Sonali Bendre makes a brief role while Vidya Balan makes a passing appearance.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara is a mish-mash between a crime and a romance film, which does not quite work for a viewer.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag collects Rs 30.6 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which started slow on Friday, improved over next two days, peaking on Sunday. The film found patronage at multiplexes while the single screens reflected poor performance at most places. The film has managed to collect Rs 30.6 crore in its opening weekend. The film is expected to sustain at a few multiplexes in Mumbai, Delhi and NCR besides Punjab. The distributors of D-Day, due next Friday, skeptical about getting playtime are now sure of good screens.

Sixteen has failed to get audience.

The Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha love story Lootera which had a fair weekend due to support from Metro multiplexes, dropped drastically after the weekend and ended its first week run with Rs 22.4 crore. With its limited face value and heavy storyline, it failed to sustain. This is Vikramaditya Motwane‘s second directorial venture, following the critically acclaimed Udaan (2010).

Policegiri, which stars Sanjay Dutt, has failed badly; its typical south content, Dutt and crude treatment failed to jell. The film has collected Rs 13.25 crore in its first week. Dutt‘s next release this year would be the Zanjeer remake where he would be reprising the memorable role of Sher Khan previously essayed by the late legend Pran in the 1973 original.

The Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar has added Rs 1.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 28.8 crore. With a poor script and execution, the film has not added much.

Raanjhanaa, which marked the debut of the south superstar Dhanush of Kolavari Di fame, and met with mixed response due to its second half, has sustained well in its third week by collecting Rs 7.25 crore and taking its three week tally to Rs 56.55 crore.

Excel Productions‘ youth flick Fukrey survives its fourth week with figures of Rs 1.5 crore and taking its four week total to Rs 34.2 crore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has added Rs 50 lakh for its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 182.55 crore. Ayan Mukherjee‘s second directorial venture has certainly gone down well with the audiences across the globe; it has certainly set the benchmark for the highest grosser for this year.

QUATIMD features Sonali Bendre in a cameo

MUMBAI: Milan Luthria‘s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara (OUATIMD) features SonaliBendre in a “guest appearance”. Her association with the director goes back a long way and that is why she agreed to be a part of the underworld drama.

Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, the film features her as Mumtaz. She will be seen on the big screen after a gap of nearly a decade when the film releases on 15 Aug.

Sonali‘s last big screen outing was again a guest appearance in Shah Rukh Khan, Priety Zinta and Saif Ali Khan starrer Kal Ho Naa Ho, in which she had played a doctor.

OUATIMD stars Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha in the main lead.

Another reason for Sonali to give a nod to OUATIMD was its producer Shobha Kapoor, who is a good friend of her mother-in-law.

“Shobha aunty has been friends with my mother-in-law for the past 40 years. So, when she calls her and asks for me to do something, I can‘t say no to her. So it‘s just that,” said the actress known for films like Sarfarosh and Zakhm.

“I have not charged them for anything. So it‘s not a professional kind of a thing for me, it‘s just a guest appearance that I am doing for the people that are involved in it. It‘s a very interesting literal role,” added the 38-year-old actress.

  • Farah Khan mulls screening Joker to the underprivileged

Farah Khan mulls screening Joker to the underprivileged

MUMBAI: Producer Farah Khan intends to screen her upcoming film Joker to underprivileged children.

Directed by her husband Shirish Kunder, the film is a fantasy-adventure film starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Shreyas Talpade and Minnisha Lamba.

“Joker is a complete family film and the kids already love our friendly aliens. We have been doing a lot of events with aliens and the reaction from kids has been out of this world,” Farah said in a statement.

The makers of the film are planning to show the film to underprivileged kids and children from reality shows a couple of days before the movie releases. “As part of the film’s promotions, we are planning to show this movie to the kids,” Farah added.

The film tells the story about a village called Paglapur that lacks basic facilities like water supply and electricity. Since no one comes forward to solve the problems, the character played by Akshay creates a drama involving aliens to attract people‘s attention.

Joker, jointly produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Farah and Shirish‘s production house Three‘s Company and Akshay Kumar‘s company Hari Om Entertainment, will release on 31 August.

  • Joker no more a 3D project

Joker no more a 3D project

MUMBAI: Going back to the original plan to shoot Joker directed by Shirish Kunder in 3D, the makers UTV Movies has decided that the film starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Minissha Lamba would be in the regular 2D format.

Said Disney UTV Studios MD Siddharth Roy Kapoor, “For a movie featuring a supersta, the draw is more of the star power and the content. We have seen this in case of many films over the past year that have clicked at the BO more for the film itself rather than the incremental business from 3D screens. Given this experience, we took a collective decision with Akshay, Shirish and his wife Farah Khan to complete Joker in the regular 2D format only.”

In 1947 when the maps of India and Pakistan were being drawn, the village of Paglapur didn’t find a place in either country due to an oversight. The village had the distinction of housing the largest mental asylum in the region and in the melee that ensued during partition, the asylum inmates broke loose, drove away the villagers and established their own republic Paglapur.

And that’s how it stayed for the next 60 years! While the world outside changed, Paglapur remained isolated, with no electricity, television or sanity! Now, decades after the world forgot this village, a Nasa scientist of Indian origin, Raj and his wife Manali find themselves on the road to Paglapur. Raj is working on a top secret project for creating a device to communicate with aliens. What ensues forms the crux of the film.

Kunder said, “Initially we had plans to make Joker in the 3D format. But that is not to be. Taking into account the recent responses of 3D movies, we decided to reach out to a wider audience.”

Going by recent performances of our 3D films, the genre has still a long way to go. Even Rakesh Roshan, who had earlier planned to convert Krrish 3 that was shot in the 2D format into 3D, is a little hesitant. “Whether to incorporate 3D or not depends on the length of the film,” he averred.

  • UTV announces release dates of Barfi, Joker and Heroine

UTV announces release dates of Barfi, Joker and Heroine

MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures has announced the release dates of three of its big-ticket films.

While Anurag Basu-directed film Barfi! will release on 31 August, the Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Joker will release on 14 September and the Madhur Bhandarkar-helmed Kareena Kapoor-starrer Heroine on 21 September.

Barfi!, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileyana, is the story of Barfi-the chalu Chaplin who the girls love but the cops hate. He can‘t speak but is always talked about. His naughty antics will make one scream but he never listens, because he can‘t.

On the other hand, the country‘s first ever extra-terrestrial drama, Shirish Kunder-directed film Joker is the story of Agastya (Akshay Kumar), a researcher probing the existence of aliens in the universe who returns to his small little native village. The out-of-luck Agastya takes it upon himself to put his crazy village on the global map and continues with his exploration on aliens from there.

While his plan gets the village attention from across the world, it also comes with a great deal of risk. Will aliens save the day for Aghastya or will his plans fall like a pack of cards?

The film has been produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Three‘s Company and Kumar‘s Hari Om Productions.

Lastly, Heroine is based on the life and times of a superstar heroine from the dream factory we call ‘Bollywood‘. The film is an entertaining, daring, emotional, shocking, glamorous, scandalous behind the scenes account of the reality behind the world of glitz and glamour that our film stars inhabit.

For a country obsessed with films and film stars, Heroine will take audiences on a voyeuristic journey to see what really goes on behind the closed doors of make-up rooms and vanity vans. It gives them a chance to go beyond the gorgeous smiles and politically correct quotes, to see what really happens in the lives of India‘s sweethearts.

The film has been produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Madhur Bhandarkar.
