I see all these boys working so hard, not just Mumbai Heroes but also other teams, and that makes me so proud of the film fraternity.”

  • Tubelight…. Betrays fans’ faith

Tubelight is a slang used generally to refer to a person who is a slow-starter, takes time in grasping matters like jokes or a simple statement. In the film, Tubelight, Salman Khan’s character, is described as such by one and all because nothing seems to get into his head. But, as the story unfolds, it belies its own title because, Salman is not just a slow-starter: he is a non-starter. Nothing gets into his mind.

Based on the Hollywood film, Little Boy (2015), it is a period film in that the story takes place during World War II. A young boy of eight and his father share an amazing love for each other. The father has to join the troops to fight the war in place of his older son. The boy, attached to his father, will do anything, go to any length so that the war comes to an end so that his father can come back.

Tubelight has followed Little Boy almost scene to scene and in the setting but takes the liberty to change the characters and relationships. In place of the father-son, Tubelight is about the bond between brothers. These liberties prove hard to live up to as the film proceeds.

Salman Khan, living in Kumaon in Uttarakhand in north India, is a halfwit who is slow to react to things. He is lonely and the butt of jokes of the whole town. That is till his mother delivers a son, and Salman now has a younger brother. Sohail Khan, though younger, protects Salman from all the bullies. The brothers become inseparable and complement each other.

The peaceful town suddenly comes alive as trouble is brewing on the north-east frontier and war with China looks inevitable. The army visits the town to appeal for recruits. A patriotic fervour takes over and a lot of young boys volunteer. Salman, for his slow take on everything, is rejected while Sohail makes the cut.

The film takes about 30 minutes from the start till now, which is when the real story is set to begin; that of Salman pining for his brother and looking for the ways to end the war so that Sohail can be brought back. This time taken to depict the undying bond between the brothers has not quite worked on the viewer.

While he was a child, Mahatma Gandhi had visited Kumaon and given a mantra to Salman, that if you have faith in yourself, you can make mountains move. This mantra is put to test when a magician, played by Shah Rukh Khan, visits the town. He needs a volunteer from the audience for a magic trick. Salman is the chosen volunteer and he has to use his self-belief to move a soda bottle put on a table. The feat only adds to Salman’s belief in what Gandhiji had said.

Then, there is also Om Puri, who gives tenets of Gandhiji to Salman to follow if he wants to be successful in bringing his brother back.

While Salman’s self-belief is being honed, a Chinese family of two, a young widow, Zhu Zhu, and her little son, Matin Rey Tangu, move into Kumaon. Having arrived from Calcutta, they settle in a distant cottage. Sceptical at first that the Chinese had invaded Kumaon, Salman decides to follow Gandhiji’s advice and makes friends with Matin and later with Zhu Zhu. No matter that the whole town hates these two Chinese just for being Chinese.

If all this sounds mundane and not like a story, that is because that is how it is. There is no movement, the film is at a standstill as Salman goes around proving his self-belief, spending time with the Chinese, inquiring about his brother with the army man, played by Yashpal Sharma, time and again, and getting ridiculed by the townsfolk.

Even while concluding the film, the director chooses to stretch things by adding unnecessary melodrama.

Tubelight starts with a wrong film as inspiration. The idea of superimposing Salman in place of an innocent young boy of eight in the WW II era braving all tests so that his father could return from the war backfires. Just making him an imbecile to fit into an eight year old’s character is not a sane idea.

The direction is poor with glitches galore. Borrowing an American film is fine, but also following the same sets is not. Kumaon town of 50s and 60s with English signboards on shops, bakery, Softy vending machine, direct dialling telephones is taking things for granted. War scenes are not convincing. While the war is being fought across Ladakh, half the army seems to be stationed in Kumaon, busy giggling!

Musically, the film has two decent numbers in Naachmerijaan….and Radio song. Dialogue is mundane. Set designing is patchy ad editing is poor. Cinematography complements the scenic location.

Salman Khan tries his best but this just is not his film, he disappoints his fans. Sohail Khan is still a non-actor. Sharma and Isha Talwar are okay. Zeeshan Ayub is the villain without a cause.

Zhu Zhu is good. Om Puri and Matin Rey are the only bright spots.

Tubelight offers none of the regular Salman feature like action, songs, comic situations, the things that make his films work. This film counts only on emotions which, sadly, are forced and fail to touch the viewer. Unreasonably high priced, Tubelight has little going for it despite Eid week.

    Producers: Salma Khan, Salman Khan.

    Director: Kabir Khan.

Cast: Salman Khan, Matin Rey Tangu, Om Puri, Sohail Khan, Yashpal Sharma, IshaTalwar, Mohammed ZeeshanAyub, Zhu Zhu, Brijendra Kala, Shah Rukh Khan (Sp. Appearance).

MUMBAI: Bringing double bonanza of endless laughter and giggles is Colors’ newest offering, Chhote Miyan Dhaakad.

Putting spotlight on the little laughter-whizzes of our country, this fresh take on comedy, laden with innocence, will lighten up the primetime viewing of the audiences over the weekend. Guiding these little wonders while they brighten your mood with their guileless humor will be comedy connoisseurs and judges, Neha Dhupia and Sohail Khan and anchored by Bharti Singh.

Produced by Endemol Shine India, Chhote Miyan Dhaakad will witness the young brigade team up to generate fresh waves of laughter starting 25 March, every Saturday and Sunday at 6pm and 10pm on Colors.

Colors programming head Manisha Sharma said, “At Colors, we have attempted different formats within the comedy genre. This time we decided to let the children take the centerstage and show their alacrity in the art of comedy. Neha and Sohail are great with kids and we found them to be a perfect fit for the show with Bharti guiding them with her enthusiasm as an anchor.”

Chhote Miyan Dhaakad, a battlefield of comic jibes, will be waged by 12 budding laughter gurus. Using stand-up comedy as their weapon of choice, these contestants, handpicked from across the country, will show audiences why they are superior than, if not as good as, any adult comedian. Divided into three groups of four each, these young powerhouses will not only showcase group performances but also solo acts that will prove their mettle on the laughter stage. Joining the budding group of talent will be their partner-in-crime and host Bharti Singh, who will encourage the contestants to push the envelope with their performances.

The most daunting job, though, will be that of comic buffs Neha Dhupia and Sohail Khan who will be tasked with the role of the Principals of the comedy arena as they judge the tiny tots’ attempts to set the laughter ball rolling across the country.

Commenting on his role as judge, actor Sohail Khan said, “Chhote Miyan Dhaakad goes where no other comedy show has gone in the past; it recognizes the talent of the younger generation and gives them the platform to entertain the entire country with their antics. The rib-tickling moments that these young crusaders have been creating during the course of the shoot makes us believe that they’re the next big thing on television. I am extremely proud to be able to partake in their journey, and commend Colors for putting the spotlight on their comic prowess. These little wonders will spin their magic and take the nation by storm!”

Adding further, Dhupia said, “Chhote Miyan Dhaakad is a format that tugs at the innocence and simplicity in humour, delivered with utmost confidence by young talent. Colors has a strong legacy in delivering interesting comic formats and content, and I am happy to be associated with this show. I especially love the fact that I got an opportunity to witness the budding talent that hold the potential to emerge as tomorrow’s comic stalwarts.”

Ranging between 4 & 14 years of age, the up and coming comedy brigade who will compete on the Chhote Miyan Dhaakad laughter playground include Kavya Ramani (Mumbai), Agrima Dogra (Noida), Vedansh Pagare (Indore), Parth Dhamija (New Delhi), Ridhima Taneja (Ludhiana), Manav Khyali (Rajasthan), Sargam Khurana (New Delhi), Keyan Gadia (Indore), Preetjyot Singh (Ranchi), Tamanna Dipak (Assam), Divyansh Dwivedi (Ludhiana), and Tasheen Shah (Mumbai).

Endemol Shine India MD & CEO Deepak Dhar said, “Talent comes in many forms, shapes and sizes. The most appealing one, though is that which resides in children. Chhote MIyan Dhaakad puts together 12 rip-roaringly hilarious children who only strive to entertain the viewers and the judges with their performances. They are the true USP of the show; their unexploited and unadulterated talent forming the foothold for a true-blue family entertainer. With Chhote Miyan Dhaakad, we hope to create an unparalleled viewing experience which will grab audience attention and bring a smile to their faces every weekend.”

To promote Chhote Miyan Dhaakad, Colors has devised an extensive 360-degree integrated marketing and digital campaign whose outreach extends to various touchpoints across conventional and social media platforms.

Pakistan cricket team loses face in front of their fans: TO THE NEW analyses

MUMBAI: It’s just the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and it has gone from bad to worse for the Pakistan cricket team. Almost everything has gone against them starting from key players being banned from international cricket to losing two critical matches in the start of the tournament against India and West Indies that have brought them to the bottom of the Pool B Points Table. To add to this, they are now hit by fresh scandals like the fake retirement announcement of Younis Khan and their chief selector– Moin Khan doing the rounds of casinos post his team losing the match.

TO THE NEW Digital, a digital services company carried out a detailed social media research on how these events have led to a total let down of the Pakistan cricket team in the eyes of their fans. The report analysed more than 105,648 mentions on various social channels like blogs, forums, news and Twitter and found a net negative sentiment of – 62 per cent against the team.

The Pakistan’s Team Report Card clearly labels captain Misbah-ul-Haq for his bad decisions in both the matches and Sohail Khan for his bad bowling performance against West Indies as the top villains with a net negative sentiment of – 56 per cent and – 55 per cent respectively. The next on the card, are the undesired ones for Pakistan who have now aged a bit to fit into the team – Younis Khan with a negative sentiment of – 47 per cent and Shahid Afridi with a negative sentiment of – 43 per cent.

Amongst the lineup of events that have pushed Pakistan to further criticism, Younis Khan’s fake news of retirement after the Cricket World Cup 2015 received the most negative mentions with a net negative sentiment of – 86 per cent and Moin Khan’s casino visit received 18,500 mentions across social media channels with a net negative sentiment of – 65 per cent. The onus now lies with the Pakistan team to turn the tables with their performance in the upcoming fixture against Zimbabwe on 1 March, 2015.

TO THE NEW Digital CEO Deepak Mittal said, “Social media sentiments are true reflection of how the audience reacts offline. Sentiment analysis on various social channels can help not only the national teams in Cricket World Cup to analyze the mood of their fans but the scope will also expand to events like IPL and EPL. This would definitely help clubs in these leagues to strategize their social positioning by identifying their true fan base, analyzing the kind of social media buzz that leads to positive and negative sentiments across their follower base.”

  • Salman to launch Salman Khan Productions

Salman to launch Salman Khan Productions

Salman Khan is all set to take his stardom to another level. Word has it that he will soon launch his own production house Salman Khan Productions with a remake of Subhash Ghai’s Hero, which had launched Jackie Shroff’s career as a leading man.

With this project, Salmaan would finally stem into independent production house separate from the film produced by his two brothers.

We all are aware that Sohail and Arbaaz have their own production houses. While Salman would remain closely associated with his brother’s production, he would now launch his own production house Salman Khan Productions with a remake of Hero. Salman secured the remake rights from his friend Subhash Ghai almost a year back and confided in him that he would start this venture with Hero.

Salman has also asked Subhash Ghai to compose the music of the new-millennium Hero. Ghai has agreed to officially turn composer. (A lot of Ghai’s music in the past was ghost-composed by him).

Salman Khan to unite with Wanted team for sequel

MUMBAI: Three years after the release and subsequent success of Wanted, producer Boney Kapoor will once again team up with director Prabhu Deva and Salman Khan for its sequel Wanted 2.

It is said that Kapoor has already intimated Khan of the project. Though the actor has agreed to do the film, his only pre-condition is that the second part of the franchise should be original. Accordingly, an original script is being penned.

It is well-known that Wanted was a remake of Puri Jagannath‘s Telugu hit Pokiri, but Khan doesn‘t want to touch South Indian remakes as of now. So, after Sajid Nadidwala‘s Kick (a remake of a Telugu film) and Sohail Khan‘s Mental (remake of Stalin), the Dabangg star doesn‘t want to work in remakes any more.

In fact, Sohail Khan was keen to do a South Indian remake with the older Khan. But the latter preferred Sher Khan. Likewise No Entry was a remake of South Indian film. But its sequel No Entry Mein Entry is an original script.
