  • Snapdeal opens 130 new distribution hubs across India

Snapdeal opens 130 new distribution hubs across India

Mumbai: E-commerce marketplace Snapdeal announced that it has opened 130 new distribution hubs across all of India since January, covering 26 states and two union territories. The expanded network is designed to cater to the surge in demand ahead of the festive season starting in India from early October.

The e-tailer further shared that the maximum number of these hubs are located in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. In addition, Snapdeal has augmented its logistics network in Jammu & Kashmir and in the North-East.

The network expansion serves the growing demand for online shopping from smaller cities, said the e-tailer, such as Baramulla (J&K), Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Khammam (Telangana), Alwar (Rajasthan), Sambalpur (Odisha), Tumkur (Karnataka), Latur (Maharashtra), Dimapur (Nagaland) and is designed to speed up deliveries for customers in these cities and in surrounding areas.

“The new hubs are located in areas where there is either growing buyer demand or higher seller concentration. The new facilities are designed towards rapid pick-ups from sellers and faster deliveries to buyers”, a Snapdeal spokesperson said. “The network expansion will also reduce the distance that some of our shipments travel by helping fulfill some of the demand from within the region,” the spokesperson added.

With the addition of these new hubs, Snapdeal now serves over 26,000 pin codes, reaching over 90 per cent of Indians across India, including metros, tier 1 & 2 cities, and most of tier 3 and 4 towns of India, stated the e-tailer.

The growing importance of online consumers from India’s smaller cities in driving India’s e-commerce growth was highlighted in a recent report by global consulting firm Kearney. The report shared that aspiring & mass households earning less than Rs 10 lakh per annum account for nearly 70 per cent of India’s non-food, value-driven retail demand. However, this segment today accounts for only 16 per cent of value e-commerce demand. This is expected to grow to 38 percent by 2026 and to nearly 50 per cent of value e-commerce demand by 2030.

Growing internet adoption and whittling away of resistance towards online shopping during the pandemic is driving online adoption in this segment. The Gen-Z users in India’s smaller cities are digitally savvy and they are joining the millennials as independent shoppers, which is expected to accelerate the growth of value e-commerce in India.

The rise of value-conscious shoppers, especially beyond the bigger cities in India is expected to be one of the key drivers of value e-commerce growth in India, the Kearney report added.

  • Snapdeal bats for southern markets with new digital campaign

Snapdeal bats for southern markets with new digital campaign

Mumbai: E-commerce platform Snapdeal has announced its brand campaign called “Brand Waali Quality, Bazaar Waali Deal” in southern markets, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. The campaign targets savvy, value-conscious buyers while communicating the e-tailer’s unique value proposition for high utility items, including fashion, accessories, homeware, and more.

The campaign takes a lighthearted dig at the burden users feel about desiring a “branded” lifestyle. Moving the humorous narrative forward, it showcases how the users are liberated from this burden when they discover the depth of high-quality, affordable selection available on Snapdeal. The campaign comes to life through a series of videos in Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil and will be live across all social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and OTT entertainment networks like Hotstar and MX Player.

However, taking a unique approach in the Malayalam speaking market, Snapdeal will run the campaign with Youtube Creator Promotions and Facebook Branded Content Ads only and has partnered with 30+ creators/influencers like Kalidas Jayaram, Ahaana Krishna, and Shamees Kitchen to create 100+ content pieces that will reach out to relevant audiences in Kerala & other southern states.

So far, many people believe that online shopping cannot match their experience of local shopping, which caters to their choices and sensibilities and assures them the comfort of buying from known places. While value retail has traditionally thrived in India’s bazaars and in more recent times through modern format value retailers, an online equivalent of the same was missing.

Speaking on the launch of the campaign, Snapdeal brand marketing director Soumyadip Chatterjee said, “With Snapdeal’s Brand Waali Quality Bazaar Waali Deal, we are breaking the myth that only expensive & branded products offer good quality. It also highlights our positioning as a leading value e-commerce platform. We also want to create awareness among people that good quality doesn’t have to cost extra, and they can now find many suitable options and choices online from the comfort of their homes.”

“Tamil Nadu/Karnataka/Kerala/Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are a significant customer base for Snapdeal, and the scope & potential to increase our reach in these markets is immense,” he added.

Earlier this year, Snapdeal had launched its Brand Waali Quality, Bazaar Waali Deal, for its Hindi speaking market with a series of 10 videos starring  Bollywood actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh.

  • E-commerce may become a major growth driver for FMCG in 2021

E-commerce may become a major growth driver for FMCG in 2021

NEW DELHI: If there is one business which has distinctly gained during the unprecedented Covid2019 pandemic, it is e-commerce. And this gain has occurred across product categories and sectors. Building on this advantage, there would be only more traction for e-commerce in the coming year. What will particularly be more noticeable is the entry of a whole lot of new players, both big and small, democratising the e-retail marketplace. However, this expanded and democratised e-commerce marketplace would co-exist with the physical brick-and-mortar retail spaces. These kirana stores significantly enough would forge partnerships with online delivery services while also digitally upgrading themselves with the help of the latter. Therefore, apart from the regular retail formats, there would be more tie-ups with different brands on e-comm platforms.

    The extraordinary growth of e-commerce

In a report, the Indian e-commerce industry has been projected to grow by 40 per cent in 2020 as compared to 23 per cent in 2019. In fact, it has even been reported elsewhere how during the Covid2019 months, a decade of growth has been registered within just a few months this year. And in terms of cross border growth, the country’s e-commerce sector has been ranked ninth globally. Around the festival season in the second half of the year, major players such as Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Snapdeal made sales worth $3.1 billion in the first four to five days of the festive season sale. And this growth has not remained confined to metros and big cities. An online player reported that 70 per cent of its orders were received from tier-2 and tier-3 towns during Diwali. Once we have seen the last of Covid2019 which is expected in 2021, these figures would grow to become even more impressive. In fact, the e-commerce penetration in the country is expected to cross 10 per cent in the coming five years from the current four to five percent.

Emerging new players are intensifying competition

While Covid2019 did pose a stupendous challenge to many small players in the early phases, several of those same affected players soon enough turned this adversity into an opportunity by upgrading themselves digitally and even recasting their product portfolios. While staying at home, a new generation of entrepreneurs called ‘homepreneurs’ has emerged, offering competition to existing players. This will only get bigger and a more competitive retail marketplace including both online and offline will emerge in the coming year.

Kirana stores taking the digital leap

At the same time, demonstrating massive momentum on the b2b front, several new players as well as existing players reinvented their business processes by forging links with other players and bigger and stable e-commerce businesses. Many new e-commerce start-ups have come up helping kirana stores or mom-and-pop stores digitize and expand their operational footprints. A cash and carry store had offered digitisation services to kirana stores promising complete digitisation in a span of 24 hours. So a vigorous drive for development of e-commerce platforms for local retailers and grocery stores underpinned by digital payment mechanisms has been underway. This trend is expected to continue in the present year democratising the marketplace further.

Contactless delivery of ready-to-eat and packaged food to acquire permanence

During Covid months, the trend towards partnerships between online delivery behemoths and FMCG companies including food brands has been a notable phenomenon. Also, the tie-ups between local food businesses and local e-commerce startups for final delivery of products have been equally noteworthy. In light of Covid-dictated explosion of cloud kitchens and food delivery apps, the near-institutionalization of highly-sanitised kitchen environment, double-layer packaging of food products, deployment of all-round safety gear equipped-delivery personnel, and contact-less delivery services would acquire a more permanent feature. The ripple effect of this new delivery culture would be seen even for the delivery of packaged food for final consumers.

Trends in shopping spend across categories

According to market research, in terms of average spend by online shoppers, electronics and accessories (39 per cent) had emerged as the largest product category followed by mobile and accessories (12 per cent); fashion, including apparel, footwear, and accessories (10 per cent); and appliances such as TV, washing machines, refrigerators (nine per cent) in the aftermath of Covid2019 outbreak. However, a management consultancy white paper has revealed that food, grocery, consumer electronics and apparel will be the top e-commerce product categories contributing to sales in the coming five years. Then based on a report by Goldman Sachs, online grocery and fashion/apparels are set to be the biggest drivers of incremental growth in e-commerce in the country.

M&As and investments to impact domestic e-commerce space

The last few months have seen considerable investment by foreign social media behemoths such as Facebook into domestic giants such as Reliance Industries which could allow the latter to play a bigger role in the e-commerce market. Then Reliance retail buying out Future Group has been another significant development.

Therefore, while 2020 was a year of crisis-driven instant improvisations and restructuring in a broadly subdued business environment, the coming year would see more stability and consolidation of the e-market space. Essentially, 2021 will see businesses adopting more of an omni-channel approach.

Snapdeal takes a dig at brand hype to highlight its value proposition

KOLKATA: E-commerce player Snapdeal has rolled out a new campaign – Brand Waali Quality, Bazaar Waali Deal, which seeks to disrupt the notion that only expensive products offer good quality. In a straightforward manner, it communicates Snapdeal’s unique value proposition – good quality at low prices.

The campaign features Bollywood actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh. Using humour, the ad takes a lighthearted dig at a mindset that feels that anything can be good only if it is branded.

Through a series of videos, the campaign challenges the conventional “brand-oriented” thinking and draws the attention of the audience to the depth of high-quality choice that is available online and showcases that great quality is also available at affordable prices. It is targeted towards smart, value-conscious buyers, who are not necessarily taken in by the “brand quotient”, but are focused on getting good quality, high utility items including fashion, accessories, homeware and much more.

Snapdeal CEO & Co-founder Kunal Bahl said, “Value is an integral part of India's purchase journey – online or offline. It is shaped by decades of experience and acumen of Indian families in looking beyond the sales talk to find the best value for their rupee. In today’s connected world, it is also in the collective wisdom from one’s network that helps sort real value from the hype. This campaign is a nod to the savvy online buyers, who understand that great quality does not need to cost more.”

Conceptualised and developed in partnership with All things small and EO2, Snapdeal’s Brand Waali Quality, Bazaar Waali Deal will reach out to consumers pan-India. The campaign has gone live today and will run over the summer months.

  • Snapdeal targets low-end value shoppers in strategic shift

Snapdeal targets low-end value shoppers in strategic shift

KOLKATA: It has been more than six months since the onset of the pandemic. While most businesses have taken a major hit, e-commerce has been have a rollicking time with a further boost projected during this festive season.

A recent report from ReedSeer Consulting said that goods with a gross merchandise value of  $3.1 billion were sold by e-commerce companies  like Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra, and Snapdeal  in less 4.5  days of starting their festive sales. Snapdeal’s Kum Mein Dum sale, which concluded on 20 October, saw a massive adoption in smaller cities. Eager to hold on to this fresh inflow of shoppers, the platform is widening the depth of the value segment, said Snapdeal communications & corporate affairs SVP Rajnish Wahi.

He explained that a large part of the audience the company targets is in tier-2, tier-3 and beyond. Moreover, many of them have high aspirations but limited disposable incomes. After fulfilling basic expenditures, they may not have Rs 10,000 to buy a pair of shoes at the end of a month. But they shop often, mostly in local outlets. “Our target is to bring the same collection online which they would possibly go to local markets for,” he said, adding that most products on the platform are priced between Rs. 250-2,000.

The e-tailer has added 10,000 small and local sellers  and manufacturers in the last couple of months.

Along with creating the value shopping segment, Snapdeal is also trying to make the service easier and more accessible for buyers of all shades and income levels. As a number of them are not comfortable with English, it has also added eight Indian local languages to its user interface. 30 per cent of the overall users opt for the UI in vernacular languages. Not only can they shop in their mother tongue, but also get promotional messages in that language as well.

“India is a very heterogeneous market. At first, the 80-100 million who came online were largely urban, English-speaking with high disposable incomes. In the second phase, up to 300-400 million are going digital, and these people have different tech-awareness, different language preferences, and lower disposable income. Those who seek to discover, who want to explore further are our target segment. What differentiates us is the depth of merchandise in  our "value" segment,” said Wahi.

He emphasised that owing to its good brand awareness and high recall value, Snapdeal is among the top three e-commerce players in India.

With the change in its business strategy, Snapdeal has also started going hell for leather by investing increasingly in digital marketing, especially on social  media. Wahi explained that the platform has moved beyond the brand-building phase and is now looking at a more targeted, result oriented marketing strategy.  While social media can also help to explain a product, it’s word of mouth that greatly helps a discovery-led platform like Snapdeal, he added.

Will visitors make a great deal out of Snapdeal's  broadbasing strategy?-

  • Snapdeal establishes new logistics hubs

    Snapdeal establishes new logistics hubs

NEW DELHI: E-commerce platform Snapdeal has expanded its nationwide logistics network. It has by opened eight new centres at manufacturing hubs that are located across cities in India. The new centres are part of a pre-Diwali increase in capacity initiative to cater to the festive spike in volumes.

The new centres are located inside the manufacturing hubs at Bahadurgarh, Rajkot, Bhiwandi, Agra, Yamuna Nagar, Noida, Mathura, and Mumbai.

The expansion is part of a decentralised network designed by Snapdeal, where its centers are located within commercial hubs inside a city to ensure faster pickup of packets from the sellers. This has become all the more important due to Covid2019 related restrictions, which at times reduce the operating hours or prohibit weekend operations in some parts of the country.

These new centers will cater to manufacturers and sellers of decor and furnishing items like lights, curtains, bedsheets, kitchenware, and apparel including sarees and ethnic wear. All these items are expected to witness high festive sales volumes due to an increase in the number of Indians preferring to buy online for convenience and safety reasons.

Earlier this year, Snapdeal opened 15 logistics centres. With the new addition, the company now runs 23 logistics centres. Its logistics hubs offer dedicated facilities for the manufacturing units, including packaging of orders and online tracking for orders in transit and facilitate faster movement of packets.

According to a Snapdeal Spokesperson, “The additional logistics capacity comes ahead of the festive season sale when the volume of orders is higher. The new centres make the fulfillment process simpler for the manufacturer-sellers so that they can devote all their resources towards production.”

Snapdeal is aiming to add 5000 manufacturer-sellers on its platform this year. Most of these manufacturers produce and sell daily use products like steel and copper utensils, kitchen gadgets like food processors and fashion accessories like watches and wallets.

MUMBAI: Snapdeal, an e-commerce platform, has onboarded experts from the Indian Institute of Counselling experts to provide easy access to its employees who wish to seek counselling support to handle any issues of anxiety or stress in their lives.

Considering the current testing times with unprecedented uncertainties, it is natural for people to feel anxious. The initiative is an attempt to build a positive and relaxed frame of mind by providing access to mental health professionals who are trained and experienced in helping people deal with anxieties. The entire process is confidential and counsellors can be reached via a telephone number available to the team.

The company has also scheduled mental wellness awareness webinars for all its employees with experts from the industry. The webinar aims to support employees in functioning effectively, coping with day-to-day stress and being productive and positive as individuals.

  • Snapdeal resumes pan-India deliveries

    Snapdeal resumes pan-India deliveries

Snapdeal, India’s leading e-commerce platform, today announced that it had restored service to 100% of the pin codes that it was serving before the Covid-19 linked restrictions disrupted deliveries.

Effective today morning it has switched on all locations for delivery, excluding the containment zones, which continue to remain inaccessible for e-commerce deliveries as per guidelines issued by the central and state governments.

The swift resumption of the complete network has been possible on account of detailed planning exercises completed between Snapdeal and its third-party logistics providers over the course of the last week in anticipation of lockdown 4.0 relaxations. To help in logistics planning, Snapdeal has engaged Legistify, a law tech platform, that provides live trackers of latest regulations in red, orange, green and containment zones, including the trends and micro details from such areas.

In addition to being the first platform to restore pan-India operations, it is also the only platform that is offering the customers a Cash on Delivery (CoD) option.  This option is available in across all 26000 pin codes – in green, orange and red zones.

All major platforms in the country have restricted orders only to pre-paid orders. According to Snapdeal, many shoppers either do not have access to digital payment options or are not comfortable using them. In order to make it simple for these users to buy online, Snapdeal has continued the availability of CoD and a large part of non-metro users are using this option extensively. As a measure of precaution, buyers are encouraged to pay for their orders using digital payments anytime before and even during the delivery process. However, for those buyers who still prefer to pay cash, the deliveries are completed accordingly.

Snapdeal has completed delivery of nearly 50% of the pre-lockdown orders placed by buyers in March, but which could not be delivered due to the sudden imposition of lockdown restrictions. All deliverable orders from this backlog are expected to be cleared by the end of this month.

As per Snapdeal, it is working closely with its logistics partners to share updated demand assessments so that adequate availability of delivery agents can be planned for. It is also helping its partners plan delivery protocols that enhance safety for both the buyer and the delivery agent.

According to Snapdeal Spokesperson, “Customers all over the country have been waiting for long to receive their orders and place new orders. Thanks to advance planning and with the active support of our logistics partners, we are excited to swiftly resume deliveries all over the country for both essentials & non-essentials.”
