Put down your phone & enjoy the moment, Vivo asks in new campaign

Mumbai: It’s been a long time coming and it’s finally here! The Vivo Euro 2020 is happening at last, after more than a year’s fervent wait. And the official partner for EURO 2020 – Vivo has a message for its fans. The smartphone maker wants them to put down their phones and enjoy the moment. This is rather unusual coming from a smartphone brand, but the sentiment behind it deserves applause.

Vivo wants football fans everywhere to enjoy every beautiful moment during the tournament. The brand is channelling its sponsorship platform to help enrich the joys of the game, whether they take place on or off the phone. In its ‘To beautiful Moments’ campaign launched on Wednesday, Vivo encourages people to be in the moment, whether it relates to connecting virtually with friends, family, and fellow fans or giving their full attention to the beautiful game of football, even if it means putting the phone down.

“We strive not only to help people capture and share life’s magical moments but to make every moment in life more magical,” said Vivo senior vice president and chief senior vice president and CMO Spark Ni.

The advertising campaign went live with the message “Give your phone a break and be there for life’s beautiful moments”. It will air on TV in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China, as well as globally on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Vivo is the presenting partner for the opening and closing ceremonies, which will take place on 11 June and 11 July, respectively with limited attendance. Vivo and UEFA have created the #vivoSuperTime campaign, which will allow fans to applaud and cheer their favourite teams on social media. The company looks at this as an opportunity to connect with its growing user base of over 400 million users globally and to reach new fans.

  • Micromax announces comeback

    Micromax announces comeback

NEW DELHI: Popular Indian mobile manufacturer Micromax is poised to make a comeback with its "In" range of smartphones.

Micromax founder Rahul Sharma made the announcement, saying the homegrown company is once again looking to re-enter the smartphone market. In a video posted on Twitter, Sharma narrated Micromax’s journey – the brand’s growth to the top as well as the mistakes which were made on the way – and that it’s now ready for a fresh start.

Sharma stated that he does not condone the recent events playing out on the Indo-Sino border. At one point the number 2 smartphone maker in India, Micromax faced tough competition from Chinese brands, and was eventually forced to call it quits.

“The Chinese mobile manufacturers wiped me out in my own country. This time, whatever I do, will be for the sake of India," he said in the video, adding that he has taken PM Narendra Modi’s call of Atmanirbhar Bharat to heart.

Micromax, along with 15 other smartphone manufacturing companies, was approved for incentives under the government's Production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

Earlier this year, the Centre had amended the rules to the PLI scheme to make it more market-friendly by removing caps and other contentious clauses. The incentives range from 4 per cent to 6 per cent over a five-year period, provided the manufacturer makes smartphones valued at around $200.

According to a Reuters report, the approved companies are expected to make Rs 10,50,000 crores worth of smartphones in India.

A few years ago, brand Micromax was shining and thriving in the sub-Rs 10,000 and sub-Rs 5,000 segment phones. It also launched several premium smartphones and did an interesting campaign with Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman.

Micromax aims to make a comeback: Reports

NEW DELHI: Homegrown smartphone brand Micromax is reportedly planning to make a comeback to the Indian market. This time, the company is banking on the government support, with its Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme which was announced recently. The company said that it would invest Rs 500 crore towards manufacturing and research and development, as per an online report. The brand also plans to launch 20 new phones by the end of the next fiscal.

The PLI scheme will help boost local manufacturing as part of government’s initiative to make India self-reliant (Aatmanirbhar). The PLI scheme was announced on April 1, 2020, under the National Policy on Electronics 2019 shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales (over the base year) of goods manufactured in India and covered under target segments, to eligible companies, for a period of five (5) years subsequent to the base year as defined.

Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma in an interaction with a leading daily said that the company was looking to regain its spot in the smartphone market through the multiple handsets it has planned to launch in the future. He also mentioned that the phone would look to disrupt the market.

On 15 August, the smartphone brand had also uploaded a teaser across its social media handles captioned “73 years of independence or being in dependence? On our 74th independence day, let’s stop being doosron pe nirbhar and become truly Atmanirbhar. Are you ready to join the revolution with us?”

Due to the influx of Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Oppo, the homegrown smartphone brands got wiped out of the smartphone market. Reportedly, Xiaomi is currently leading the smartphone market with a 30 per cent market share.

  • India captures second spot globally in smartphone shipments in 2019

India captures second spot globally in smartphone shipments in 2019

MUMBAI: Move over US. Now it’s the turn of India, which has just beaten it for the first time on an annual basis to take the second spot as far as smartphon shipments are concerned. In 2019, more than 158 million phones were shipped in the country, registering a seven per cent year on year growth. That means so many more phones consuming video and data on their apps like Hotstar, Zee5, SonyLiv, Voot, Netflix, Prime Video and what have you.

Market research firm Counterpoint released the data over the weekend. The company said that the sales were spurred by the growth of the mid-tier segment in which Chinese brands introduced many flagship grade features and capabilities, thus luring customers to buy their first or second smartphones. Additionally, the online channels became the preferred selling platforms to introduce these products faster into the market.

Says Counterpoint Research associate director Tarun Pathak: “Although the rate of growth for the smartphone market was only single digit for the first time on an annual basis, India is underpenetrated relative to many other markets; 4G penetration among subscribers being around 55 per cent. Going forward, we expect this demand to grow further due to the ongoing transition from feature phones to smartphones and progressive diffusion of key smartphone features to the entry-level price tier as a result of hyper-competition among multiple players. We further expect brands to have multi-tier strategies involving partnerships in the mobile ecosystem from hardware, software and services, thus creating opportunities within different segments like entertainment, gaming, financial services and more.”

While the smartphone market registered YoY growth, the feature phone market saw a steep decline of around 42 per cent YoY in 2019 and 38 per cent YoY in Q4 2019. This is due to a slowdown in new shipments from Reliance Jio. However, the players such as itel, Lava, Nokia and Micromax registered positive annual growth despite the overall segment decline.

  • Xiaomi, Vivo top in Q42019 smartphone shipments; Samsung at No 3 spot

In fact, India is a bigger market for it then is its home country China. What droves shipments this year was the fact that it expanded its offline retail presence as well as the strong performance of its Redmi Note series.

Vivo shipped 136 per cent more handsets in Q42019 and 76 per cent more in 2019 overall, to  capture shares of 21 per cent and 16 per cent in the two periods respectively. In fact, its performance in Q42019 saw it dislodge Samsung from its second position. The south Korean megacorp had flat growth in Q42019 and it degrew five per cent in the whole of 2019. Its market share slipped from 20 per cent in Q4 2018 to 19 per cent in Q42019, even as it calendar year sales fell from 24 per cent in 2018 to 21 per cent in 2019.

Samsung shipments were driven by its upgraded A and M series (A50s, A30s, M30s and A20s). This is the first time Samsung transitioned to a completely new portfolio targeting different channels (offline with A series and online with M series).

Oppo shipments almost doubled YoY in Q4 2019, due to demand for its budget segment device A5s and the good performance of its recently launched devices A9 2020 and A5 2020 in the offline segment. Oppo is now aggressively moving towards higher price points with the introduction of the Reno series. It witnessed a 96 per cent growth in its shipments which saw its marketshare growing  from seven per cent (Q42018) to 12 per cent in Q42019.

Itel was the number one smartphone brand in the entry-level sub-Rs 4,000 (US$ 60) price segment, while Tecno and Infinix showcased YoY growth in the Rs  6000-Rs  10000 (US$ 86-US$ 142) segment by bringing aggressive features at lower price-points like 6.6-inch displays, 20:9 aspect ratio, 5000 mAH battery, etc.

itel emerged as the number one feature phone brand in Q4 2019 followed by Samsung and Lava.  Apple was one of the fastest-growing brands in Q4 2019 driven by multiple price cuts on its XR device, thanks to local manufacturing in India. Additionally, 2019 saw the fastest rollout of Apple’s new iPhones (11 series) in India, with aggressive pricing and a good channel strategy. In fact, the new series especially iPhone 11 was introduced at a lower price point than the last year’s iPhoneXR. This has helped to gain share during the festive season and in its launch quarter in India.

Says Counteproint Research analyst  Anshika Jain:  “During 2019 we have seen all major Chinese players expanding their footprint in offline and online channels to gain market share. For example, Xiaomi, realme and OnePlus ave increased their offline points of sale, while brands like Vivo have expanded their online reach with Z and U series. 2019 also marked the fifth anniversary in India for some OEMs. Several have seen significant growth from their first full year of operation. For example, over the past four years, Xiaomi, Vivo, and OnePlus have grown 15x, 24x, and 18x respectively. This highlights that OEMs are mature enough to capture the next wave of growth and further expand their operations in India.”

Counterpoint ends by saying that all major brands are now aiming to expand in the mid to high price tier, which is likely to be the fastest-growing segment in 2020.

  • Meet the World’s First Blockchain-Powered Smartphone, BOB, at CES 2020

Meet the World’s First Blockchain-Powered Smartphone, BOB, at CES 2020

As the world teeters around cyber threats in this digital age, more and more users online, across all demographics and generations, feel more vulnerable or have experienced data breaches and attacks on their privacy. According to a study, 8 out of 10 Internet users globally don’t even feel they have control over the data which they have shared online.

While several steps have been taken to help users worldwide feel more secure online, from tighter regulation imposed onto Internet companies to the implementation of more cutting edge encryption and cybersecurity software, there doesn’t seem to be a solution that can help online users to regain data ownership or feel as secure as they were before the dawn of the Internet, until now.

On the first CES (Consumer Electronics Show) event that is taking place in this new decade, the world is set to witness the unveiling of the world’s first blockchain-powered smartphone: Blok On Blok. It has been recognized as a CES 2020 Innovation Award Honoree in the CES 2020 Innovation Awards.

Blok On Blok, or BOB, is Singapore-based blockchain startup Pundi X’s flagship smartphone product which was first introduced as the XPhone at the now historic Bali Blockchain Summit back in October 2018. During this summit, Pundi X demoed the world’s first ever phone call made over the blockchain.

To ensure the utmost privacy of its users, Pundi X created a special operating system for BOB, called f(x) or Function X OS. This OS empowers BOB users to access the Function X ecosystem, thus every call, text, or action made online, either through a browser or an app is decentralized. Each BOB functions as a node and any action that takes place within the blockchain mode of f(x) OS does not require a centralized service provider or carrier. Hence, the more BOBs that have been deployed in the world would mean a stronger decentralized Function X ecosystem.

“If there’s anything the last decade has proven, it’s that users now need to become extra careful on what they share online and try to secure all that’s left of their privacy and their lives. But they wouldn’t have to be afraid anymore with BOB as it allows users to reclaim their privacy,” Pundi X CEO & Co-founder, Zac Cheah said.

“We believe, the data you have should be yours, and yours alone,” added David Ben Kay, President of Function X Foundation and Chief Legal Officer of Pundi X. “To push for this initiative, we’ve set up the Function X Foundation, a nonprofit, independent organization that supports the growth of the Function X Ecosystem and facilitates the usage of blockchain technology for good.”

    F(X) to Android 9 Pie to F(X)

Since not everyone is ready to go off the grid completely just yet, BOB is developed with a function that allows users to switch between blockchain mode and traditional mode, the latter of which is made possible by Android 9 Pie OS. In the blockchain mode, users are assured that all calls, text messages and actions made are secure and private as they don’t go through any centralized service provider. And all these are made possible by Function X.

“We are empowering the user and bringing back the control they once owned over their data.” Cheah said.

    Bringing Retro Back

Aside from its homage to the very first promise of the Internet—data ownership and decentralized data transmission online— BOB has also taken inspiration from iconic 80s and 90s sci-fi films and incorporate into its design to create a retro-futuristic look. Each BOB package comes with a MOD assembly kit that includes the following core components: motherboards, display screens, cameras, audio speakers, buttons, and other related accessories. Once fully assembled, the BOB looks like every tech junkie’s phone in the next decade—functionally designed with a futuristic sci-fi feel. Think of BOB as the phone that perhaps would have been fitting for the Blade Runner 2049 or Back to the Future movies. BOB owners can choose to customize the look by 3D printing the different parts of the BOB phone.

As part of the upcoming plans, Function X Foundation will invite designers worldwide to submit their own iterations of the BOB phone, which could then be integrated into the official MOD packages. By the end of this process, there could be around 5 to 10 official MOD designs for BOB. What we envision is a phone that empowers the individual and the user from data privacy to how it looks like.

Pre-order on Indiegogo on January 7

BOB is set to be up for pre-order on Indiegogo on January 7 at 9am PST with early bird discounts. Its retail price is at USD 599. The latest BOB prototype will be exhibited at the CES 2020 at Sands, Hall G – 52501 in Eureka Park in Las Vegas, Nevada.
