  • Mary Kom earns Rs 27.3 crore at BO

Mary Kom earns Rs 27.3 crore at BO

MUMBAI: Mary Kom opened with a weak response despite being a solo release for the week with much hype. Media critics did not quite favour the film as was expected and panned it liberally. The film has been granted tax exemption in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh so far and collected Rs 27.3 crore in the opening week. The film improved on Saturday and Sunday but has not been able to sustain as well on Monday as most of Western India will be busy with the last day of Ganesh Utsav while in Delhi schools, terminal exams start today.

Raja Natwarlal is poor at the end of its first week managing to collect barely Rs 21 crore.  Emraan Hashmi pays the price for keeping on doing same kind of roles film after film not to mention this time the content as well as treatment were mediocre  and taking your audience for granted never works. Music was poor too to add to the woes.

Trip To Bhangarh, Last Benchers and Identity Card have proved to be disasters.

Mardaani held on well in its second week to collect Rs 8.19 crore taking its two week tally to Rs 31. 16 crore. With its limited budget and YRF advantage of distribution network, the film will make it to earning status.

Singham Returns collects Rs 4.6 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 136.4 yet still short of target.

Entertainment has collected Rs 30 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 63.4 crore.

  • Path-breaking VFX for ‘Singham Returns’ by Reliance MediaWorks

Path-breaking VFX for ‘Singham Returns’ by Reliance MediaWorks

MUMBAI: Reliance MediaWorks, the techno-creative provider and part of the Reliance group delivered breathtaking VFX for Rohit Shetty’s Singham Return starring Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor.

Crossing the 100 crore mark in just five days after its release, Singham Returns is the story of  D.C.P. Bajirao Singham(Devgan) and his quest to track a black marketer with tremendous influence within the political system.

Talking about the use of VFX in large scale director Rohit Shetty said, “Singham Returns required shooting grand scale action scenes which required intensive VFX. The team at Reliance MediaWorks has done a splendid job, the outcome of which is realistic action packed scenes.”

While the work ranged from elaborate sequences to set extensions, the highlight of the work done by the company is evident in the action scene shot on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, some of which was live while most of it was created using computer graphics and VFX. The scene also involved missiles and high on speed vehicles which were created solely with special effects.

In total Reliance MediaWorks has worked on 2500 VFX shots for the film, which constitutes almost 90 minutes of the run time. It took the company about three months to create, wherein Reliance MediaWorks creative head for VFX Naveen Paul was personally present on the sets to ensure the scenes were shot in sync with the VFX required.

Commenting on the efforts, Paul said, “Rohit Shetty was clear about the requirements from day one, that of bringing to life an entertaining action packed film. 2500 VFX shots required intensive work by the entire team. We are all proud of the results.”

Excited and happy with the results, Reliance MediaWorks CEO Venkatesh Roddam said, “We are glad to have partnered with Rohit Shetty for Singham Returns. The team headed by Naveen Paul and Nishit Shetty put in three months of work involving extensive detailing and we are glad the efforts have shown result.”

Paul credits the team for being able to deliver detailed VFX shots within such a short time frame. This team comprises VFX supervisors Ranadheer Reddy and Pankaj Kalbende, production head (VFX) Vinoth Ganesh, VFX producer Abrez Mohd, concept and mattepaint head Chandrakanth Shenoy, CG supervisor Guru Prasad and matchmove head Sohel Shaikh.

  • No big win at the BO

No big win at the BO

MUMBAI: The law of averages catches up with Emraan Hashmi as he delivers another mediocre film. Kissing scenes cannot salvage a bad film. Despite being a stolen idea from a 1973 Hollywood classic, The Sting, the film lacked in scripting and content.

Paresh Rawal made it a bit tolerable but not enough to salvage it commercially. Raja Natwarlal had a below average opening on Friday and dropped by about 20 per cent on Saturday which indicates total rejection. Its release with the onset of Ganesh festival was a bad idea. The film has ended its opening weekend with Rs 14.4 crore.

Other films released, Identity Card, Last Benchers and Trip To Bhangarh met with ‘No audience no show’ status at most centres.

Mardaani, the first ‘A’ only certified film from the Yash Raj banner, fails to generate audience enthusiasm. The film fared average at the box office, but seeing that it is an economically produced film and coming from Yash Raj, which has controlled releasing overheads, it should make the recovery stage. The film collected Rs 22.97 crore for its first week. It added another Rs 5.24 crore for its second weekend taking its ten day total to Rs 28.21 crore.

Singham Returns manages to collect Rs 21.8 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 131.8 crore. Entertainment has collected Rs 1.55 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 63.1 crore.

Kick has added Rs 25 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 226.35 crore.

  • ‘Mardaani’: A decent opening at the BO

‘Mardaani’: A decent opening at the BO

MUMBAI: Mardaani, a Rani Mukerji show, her own Dabangg or Singham, gets an indifferent opening response. It improves a little on Saturday and again on Sunday to end its opening weekend with Rs 14.46 crore. Besides routines content, it’s ‘A’ certification also kept younger lot at bay.

Three other films released last Friday have all proved to be irrelevant failing to find audience. They are MAD: Mad About Dance, Life Is Beautiful and Katiyabaaz, though the last mentioned won some critical appreciation.

Singham Returns made the most of its extended weekend which included holidays of Independence Day on Friday and Gokul Ashtami on Monday by putting together Rs 85.3 crore for four days. The slide began Tuesday onwards as the film ended its first week with Rs 110 crore. Despite weak opposition in its second week, the drop was drastic on the eighth day as the film managed to collect a little over Rs 3 crore.

Entertainment has added Rs 11.75 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 61.55 crore.

Kick has collected Rs 2.2 crore in its third week taking its three week tally to Rs 226.1 crore.

ABP News Lets Fly The Flag Salutes Bravehearts with Singham

MUMBAI: ABP News Lets Fly The Flag initiative, started in 2012 has reached a new pinnacle this year. Other than the celebration of 68th Independence Day and the musical performance by an ace artist Irfan, the initiative this year was partnered with Singham Returns to recognize the act of bravery by a common man.

“Let’s fly the flag is one of the most successful initiatives that have been undertaken at ABP News Network. Though its journey is short but the success is immense-from being just an on air initiative in 2012, it has become an on ground + on air property. This initiative is very intrinsic to the ABP News Network as it is a reflection of all that we believe in-connecting with our viewers. We have celebrated the bravery of common people using this initiative as the platform. And we would continue to do so in the future.” shared Ashok Venkatramani, CEO, ABP Network

In 15 days of campaign on ABP News, viewers were asked to send entries of their act of bravery and winners were selected using a stringent process. A total of 10 winners were awarded by the entire cast of Singham Returns – Ajay Devgan, Rohit Sheety, and Kareena Kapoor in a ceremonial ground event at Amity University, Noida. More than 600 people attended the on-ground programme. The show was telecasted on 15th Aug, 8pm onwards on ABP News.

Lets Fly The Flag was presented by Black Cobra Plywood, Powered by Raj Shree Pan Masala, Co-Powered by Jharkhand Sakrar, Associate Sponsor M-Tech Mobiles, Venue Partner Amity University.

  • Singham Returns…Half a Singham!

    Singham Returns…Half a Singham!

MUMBAI: Sequels are usually a means of using the brand equity of the title of a successful film. Singham Returns is one more such example. Ajay Devgn is still a cop who can fell half a dozen goons with one blow. Well, he has to, since the goons come in droves of fifty or more. But while that remains the same, the rest has changed because most Hindi filmmakers take the audience for granted while making a sequel.

Devgn, a defiant and honest cop, who has been transferred to Mumbai from his Goa post in Singham (while in reality, such cops are transferred out of Mumbai!). Since he is Singham, he remains constant, while all including the villains as well as his wife to be too (!) have changed. Actually, the film has no space for a female lead but that would be a great risk according to Indian films’ unwritten regulations.

Devgn is in comfortable company. His school teacher, Anupam Kher, leads a ruling political party, albeit in keeping with the recent trend of a coalition with another party. Kher’s party has Mahesh Manjrekar as the CM while his coalition partner is Zakir Hussain, whose strings are pulled by a swami, Aloke Gupte. Being Guru Kher’s disciple, Manjrekar and Devgn are both on the right side of the law while Hussain, under the auspice of the swami, is corruption personified and, obviously, possesses a criminal mind-set. It is a formula that has been working for decades; a swami and a seedy politician have always made a great combination for villainy.

As things go, Devgn has the backing of all concerned: his school senior, the CM Manjrekar; their common school guru Kher; the police commissioner, Sharat Saxena; as well as the all of 40,000 odd cops of Mumbai!

Everybody knows that the villains are Gupte and Hussain but the law needs proof. That is what the whole film is about. 142 minutes of finding proof against two not-so-sinister or convincing villains, Hussain and Gupte. So, finally, the film amounts to one-upmanship between the villains and Devgn. It goes on and on as the judiciary needs proof and police being what it is supposed to be, can’t protect its only witness. The villains win all the way until, finally, the law keepers become outlaws to liquidate the villains. They march in their sponsored banians to the villains den in just about the most clap trap scene in the film.

The problem with Singham Returns is that it is an oft repeated story about a swami and a corrupt politician pitted against an honest establishment represented by a cop. What is more, it is poorly scripted. The film starts with the super cop, Devgn and a youth brigade riding fast bikes. That is rather tame. The script is so predictable, it could be any honest cop vs corrupt politician. Rohit Shetty’s direction without his blowing up cars does not amount to much really. The film has four music directors and eight lyricists on it credits but no song worth a mention!  Dialogue is okay at times. While the film needs some more trimming, the positive factor is its photography, especially aerial shots of Mumbai.

As for performances, nobody really needs to act in this film. Devgn with his puffed up cheeks does what he does on regular basis: throw punches. Kareena Kapoor has no role really and just pouts her way through. Kher is his usual self. While Gupte overacts as the swami, Hussain is the only one who is convincing. Dayanand Shetty, the Daya of the TV serial CID does what he does in the serial; act as a mighty cop and breaks down doors; he is effective. Rest in the cast are incidental.

On the whole, Singham Returns is a high priced routine film with only salvation being its four day weekend starting with the Independence Day holiday on Friday and ending with the Janmashtami holiday on Monday. Much appreciated earlier version, Singham, had barely managed to make it to 100 crore mark. While this film needs to do twice as much, it will fall much short of that mark.
