  • Channel V’s V Fest now set to treat audiences twice a year

Channel V’s V Fest now set to treat audiences twice a year

GOA: Channel V’s flagship live event property “India Fest” is all set to be held twice a year henceforth. Speaking at the event that was held at the Baga Grounds on 13 and 14 February, an official channel spokesperson says, “In the first six months of the year, we will have the live mega event in Goa while during the other six months we will conduct V Fest Tours across the country where winners from the fest in Goa will be taken for the shows that we hope will ignite the rock and pop culture.”

Speaking about how live events will enhance the channel’s offering, the spokesperson adds, “Today’s youth are no longer stuck to the television. Events are an essential part of college life, which no one forgets. As a corporate we decided to offer that to them on a large scale where they could fast track their passion into a career. This helps them focus and believe in what our channel has to offer them.”

Day one of the fest had performances by DJ Suketu, the band Underground Authority as well as singer turned Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana. On the second day Shilpa Rao, Mika Singh and Varun Dhawan entertained audiences. Channel sources placed the day one turnout during the day at 13,000 people turning up while 21,000 turned out at night. Day two had almost double the crowd number, the source claimed.

When queried on the innovations that the channel introduced this year, the official spokesperson informs that, firstly it integrated the fest with television channel. “The channel has created a weekend property, which is a eight episode series called the V Fest Show. The shows include various performances, contests and on ground activity that the fest managed to put up. Two of the episodes have already been aired. The eight episode series will also include a finale show of two and a half hour,” the spokesperson informs.

Secondly, the hosts and anchors for this edition of the fest were all popular faces from the channel’s various shows. This was done to resonate its programming with the crowd. Thirdly it decided to rebrand the name India Fest as V Fest from this edition for better brand recall of the channel. The spokesperson also adds that the channel brought in a big name like Varun Dhawan because they felt he embodies the youth of today quite well.

This edition of the fest had Microsoft as the title sponsor, while the other sponsors on board included Ponds Men and Parle. Maybelline was the grooming partner, while Mufti was the style partner. The event was supported by Star India with Red 93.5 FM as the radio partner. The channel took close to six months to plan for the fest. Brainstorming for next year’s edition will commence by March this year.

On the marketing front, the channel roped in 1000 college ambassadors for the fest in various colleges in India to help build buzz. Besides initiatives in various metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, Channel V also undertook zonal marketing programs in cities like Pune where close to 10,000 people turned out for the contests versus a crowd of only 700 to 800 people it managed to garner in previous season. The channel also brandished the fest at airports besides hoardings in metros.

A media planning and buying expert placed the marketing expenses of the channel between the range of Rs 5 – 6 crore across markets. The channel spokesperson claimed it had reduced spending on the marketing front this year by close to five per cent as compared to last year.

When quizzed as to why Channel V decided to convert the fest into a bi-annual event, the official spokesperson says, “We have received 10 million unique impressions on our digital platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. We do not want to lose this traction. We want to offer them something about the fest for the rest of the year through the tours and help maintain the brands offering in colleges from where the target audience of the fest comes in.”

Goa will now be a permanent venue for the V Fest.

  • ‘Ugly’…Horribly so!

    ‘Ugly’…Horribly so!

MUMBAI: Ugly defies slotting. The closest it comes to in genre is 20th Century Hollywood noir thrillers shot in low lights. While the film adopts this pretentious low light option to look intelligent, its content lacks grossly in thrill of any kind. The film is a saga of double-crossing and backstabbing among friends and family members. But the content in the film has nothing to do with the film’s main story: that of kidnap of a 10 year girl.

Ronit Roy is the top cop married to the girl he loved in college. It was a love triangle, with Ronit, Tejeswini Kolhapure and Rahul Bhatt, now a full time struggler wanting to make it as a star. Rahul seems to have been the lucky one who marries Tejaswini. The couple get one girl child who is usually witness to the violence between Rahul and Tejaswini who are eventually divorced. Ronit, by virtue of being next in line, marries her. But their marriage is cold with Tejaswini having turned an alcoholic.

Saturday is the day for Rahul to meet his daughter, Kali, and as usual he takes her out. Rahul goes up to meet his casting director friend, Vineet Kumar Singh, leaving Kali in the car when Kali goes missing. She has been kidnapped. Initially, the film is all about finding her but soon turns in to blame game and finally into all the characters wanting to exploit the situation to their own advantage.

Producers: DAR Motion Pictures, Phantom Films.

    Director: Anurag Kashyap.

Cast: Ronit Roy, Rahul Bhatt, Vineet Kumar, Singh, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Surveen Chawla, Siddhanth Kapoor, Girish Kulkarni.

Since nobody trusts anyone else they all suspect each other of the kidnap and don’t bother to check other possibilities. Ronit, being a cop, uses his office to tail and record the conversations of others including his wife, Tejaswini. He as well as his staff are completely devoted to this task. Rohit and Vineet are put behind bars and tortured in Ronit’s backroom. He has a motive since the court has restricted his visits to Kali to once a week only.

A missing ad is put in the newspapers and Tejaswinis’ crook brother, Siddhanth Kapoor, decides to take advantage. He calls up his sister demanding 50 lakh ransom to return the girl and Tejaswini asks her father, the only moneybag around, for 65 lakh, keeping her share in the ransom! Tejaswini gives her 15 lakh to her friend, Surveen Chawla, who happens to be Rahul’s current girlfriend. Surveen, an ex-item girl is married to a filmmaker who is useless in bed.

Surveen thinks she can use the 15 lakh left with her and she absconds with Rahul and Vineet. The latter is killed by Rahul in a frenzy, and Tejaswini decides to shoot Ronit even as Kali’s rotting body is lying dumped in a public place, the stink of which nobody smells until police does!

Script, direction as well as other aspects are negative in this senseless film. The characters don’t fit in our kind of films or mind-set. The film has been designed to be gloomy and drab with planned exposure of Mumbai’s poverty ridden locations and garbage so much so even the ACP Ronit’s office is in some dilapidated housing board tenement.

Ugly is a pretentious, bad film.

Star Plus to unveil ‘Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein’ on 25 November at 10 pm

MUMBAI: Star Plus has announced the launch of an hourly weekend show Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein 25 November at 10 pm.

Sprucing up its programming in the weekend segment with Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein, the channel’s endeavor is to further add to the pool of its creative and innovative mix with the show’s unique-‘slice of life’, concept which is based on a mix of humour and strong emotions, portrayed by characters which are essayed through their stories, states an official release.

However, the battle in the general entertainment space for the Saturday 10 o’clock slot will only get fierce as Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein will be up against the competitor’s reality show Idea Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj.

Commenting on the new show, Star India Pvt. Ltd. EVP content Deepak Segal said, “Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein brings back to Indian television the spice of every day life and ‘middle class mohalla’ which has earlier defined success and popularity for shows like-Wagle Ki Duniya, Nukkad, Hum Panchi Ek Chawl Ke etc. Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein is all set to create a genre of entertainment, with its light humorous storyline, as the show prods gently into the core of the human heart introspecting it’s universal themes and most of all it’s infallible romantic spirit…it’s strength!”

With an ever changing plot to the story, the show gets its spirit from three families – Mehta, Singh’s and Ali’s, having their distinct outlook and ways towards life. While the Mehta Family is a true reflection of typical middle class, the Singh Family lead each day as it comes, while the Ali Family pin their hopes with every day of life, adds the release.

CODA urges government to fix cable TV rate

MUMBAI: Cable operators today urged the Maharashtra government to fix cable subscription rates in the state. They also asked for a rollback of 50 per cent hike on entertainment tax.Addressing the press in Mumbai, the representatives of Cable Operators’ Distributors Association (Coda) said they had written to the state revenue minister Narayan Rane, requesting to re-consider its decision on the hike.

The state finance minister Jayant Patil had proposed a hike in taxes which included a 50 per cent increase in entertainment duty levied on cable operators, while presenting a surplus budget of Rs 3.06 billion for 2006-2007 in the Assembly.”We have asked the state government to fix a uniform cable TV rate. We have also asked the government to revise its decision on the entertainment tax hike. We hope to meet the minister on this next week,” said Coda vice president Ravi Singh.

Entertainment tax in those areas under municipal corporations, such as Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Nagpur, will go up from Rs 30 to Rs 45. Also, Grade-A municipal council areas would now pay Rs 30 instead of Rs 20, while Grade-B & C municipal council zones would pay Rs15 instead of Rs10.

Coda also suggested for a three-tier entertainment tax system. “The government could consider a different entertainment tax rate structure for the upper, middle and lower classes. If the government goes ahead with the 50 per cent hike in entertainment tax, we may go on strike. Why should we be responsible for collecting entertainment tax? We are, after all, service providers,” said Singh.
