Zee TV’s Simply Shekhar – stirred and certainly shaken

India‘s very own Jay Leno was back where he belonged last night after a longish break. So what was the first episode of the new “Mr Movers and Shakers” shaken and stirred like? Simply Shekhar on Zee Television last night simply had you chuckling more often than not. Which was good. Some of it seemed rather forced though. Not so good. But overall there was not too much to complain about.

It was a nice touch when Shekhar began the episode by saying “Welcome to Mmmmmm…” and he grabbed his lips, did a turnaround and looked sheepish and said “Welcome to Simply Shekhar.” The fact that Shekhar had moved on and ahead of Movers & Shakers was established quite smoothly.

A short deadline on production meant not enough promos for the show on air, not enough display in print, not enough push for viewers to realise that Shekhar is back.

Yes, he looked older, his eyes and, surprisingly, his face were puffy (was the poor lighting playing tricks?). But the entertainer has not lost any of his gift of the gab. He mimicked Laloo Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the band was in the house, giving him the laughter support, which is much better than the canned fare. He took potshots at the “saas bahu” fare on television channels, and the ennui that most in the industry are feeling.

And above all he had the Tiger as his first guest. Suman was suitably obsequious before Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray putting the celebrated “autocrat” completely at ease. Both minced no words. The Sena boss spoke out about why he stopped cartooning. “There aren‘t enough good models available. Nehru, Indira Gandhi were great for caricature. Rajiv Gandhi was not. Then came Narasimha Rao, Deve Gowda. They were great.”

Shekhar Version 2.0 seems to be getting better. Older wine does taste better.

Suman queried whether he was a messiah or a fascist. “Messiah, I am not, Fascist I am if it makes people happy,” said Thackeray. The friendly banter showed tremendous comfort levels between the two.

In all, it was an episode filled with mirth. And Shekhar Version 2.0 seems to be getting better. Older wine does taste better.

However, what stuck out like a sore thumb was the poor set design (courtesy Omung Kumar), the poor lighting. The tackiness was to be seen to be believed.

Industry professionals say the show was mounted in just a fortnight. Hence everything was rushed through. And it shows. Also, the telecast slot is at 10:30 pm, a slot which killed “M&S”. But In-House Productions (which has been sub-contracted by Suman‘s Seven Thirty Entertainment to produce the show) boss Uday Sinhwala says that the slot will do just fine. “You can complain and whine about the slot, but any time is good for a show which is good. I am confident that it will do well.”

However, a lot of marketing and promotion has to be put behind Simply Shekhar, something which Zee TV has been seen to be lacking in the past. A short deadline on production meant not enough promos for the show on air, not enough display in print, not enough push for viewers to realise that Shekhar is back. Hopefully, the channel will give enough rope to the show to find its feet.

  • Zee Network Q1 2002 net profit estimated at Rs 490 m.

Zee Network Q1 2002 net profit estimated at Rs 490 m.

MUMBAI: Zee Telefilms, which is scheduled to declare its results for the first quarter (Q1) ended 30 June 2002 today, is expected to post a roughly 18 per cent fall in net profit from the previous quarter, analysts that indiantelevision.com spoke to indicated.

Zee Tele’s net should end up in the range of Rs 490 million in this quarter on a consolidated gross of Rs 2,580 million. In the previous quarter, Zee achieved a net profit of Rs 599.1 million on a consolidated gross of Rs 3,243 million. One common refrain among the analysts was that Zee has for long been entering into its books a substantial amount of ad revenue profits that was in effect pre-booked and therefore does not really add to the company’s bottomline.

They are expecting the media major to make the correction at some point through a write-off but do not see that happening in this quarter.

Quarter-on-quarter, sales growth has been forecast as being flat or negative.

Investors have in recent times turned bearish on the share and its price has been headed southwards with its price currently in the Rs 120 range.

This despite the fact that the network has been taking initiatives like hiring new professionals such as Prashant Sanwal to build on the gains that the Alpha regional language channels have been making; and Apurva Purohit to help course correct the lead channel Zee TV.

Zee Tele has just last week announced a major deal with TV talk show veteran Shekhar Suman for two shows. Suman already anchors Nilaamghar for Zee TV, a show which packs a lot of energy and little ratings.

Expectations are high that Simply Shekhar one of the new shows that Shekhar will star in, will better the fortunes of Zee TV and bridge the gap between Sony and itself. Star Plus the leader is far ahead of both of them.

‘Simply Shekhar’ centrepiece of 3 new Zee shows set for debut

NEW DELHI:Close on the heels of Sony Entertainment Television (SET) India announcing four new shows, it is the turn of Zee TV to follow suit with three new programmes set to launch over the next few weeks.

Leading the pack for Zee will be The Simply Shekhar Show
(see earlier report Shekhar Suman turns producer with two shows on Zee ).

Zee is promising the show will take Shekhar’s original on SET – Movers & Shakers – a step further. A fun-filled variety entertainment show touching upon contemporary issues ranging from politics, sports, films, television, science and technology, research and weird inventions, music, business, etc within the country and all over the world in a light hearted manner is what The Simply Shekhar Show aims to be.

The other two shows Zee is launching are a soap – Love Marriage – and a gameshow of sorts – Karvaan Kismat Ka.

In The Simply Shekhar Show, apart from the anchor, a live band will share the stage along with three models who will add that touch of glamour.

Segment One will comprise Shekhar’s unique stand-up comedy routines as well as zany video gags and on-set gags featuring the best of comedians (Shekhar may or may not be involved in them).

The stand up jokes will be take offs and spoofs on actual and current news items across the world. Spoofs on ads, misprints in newspapers, topical issues like an invention in US or elsewhere, views expressed by eminent people etc. will be part of this section. All the jokes will make a direct reference to the news items they are based on.

The video gags, onset gags and street gags may or may not be topical in nature though. They may be based on general topics like men, women, relationships, astrology, Feng Shui, travel, fashion, etc. along with the topical stuff.

Segment Two will have celebrity interviews. In this segment, Shekhar will invite a special guest who has been in the news in the recent past. This segment will be a special addition depending on the situation (i.e. if there is any newsmaker worthy of being invited onto the set). Only people who have substantial achievements to their credit will be invited.

Segment Three involves live interaction with viewers, which will be done by Shekhar making random calls to them and conversing with them. It could also be a prank call to a celebrity. Call in facility will be provided on the sets so that viewers can call in on the show.

Special occasions will be created for Shekhar’s interaction with the audience like an auction for the audition and various other gags with audience.

The show – produced by Shekhar for Zee TV – launches 30 July and will air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 pm.
