  • Network18 appoints Sachin Tagra as vice president – Capital18

    MUMBAI: In a move to strengthen Capital18, the media investment arm of Network18, the Group has been on an aggressive hiring spree.

    The company today announced the appointment of Sachin Tagra as Vice President– Capital18. Sachin will oversee media for equity investments and initiatives across all platforms within the Group and will report to Puneet Singhvi, Head – Corporate Development.

    Capital18 is the Venture Capital and Media Investments division of Network18 Group focused on making investments in media, entertainment and technology ventures.

    Commenting on his appointment, Tagra says, “I am excited to join Network18 Group and build the platform to invest its media assets into fast growing companies. We will focus on businesses that need long term investments to build their brands. We will work closely with entrepreneurs to drive a high RoI on their media spends and contribute in scaling up their businesses.”

    Prior to joining Network18, Sachin was Associate Vice President in Brand Capital, strategic investment arm of Times Group where he focused on driving investments in early stage businesses and had set up the Incubator Capital investment model. He was also responsible for BC GSV labs business, a JV of BCCL with Global Silicon Valley, US.

    Tagra is a management graduate with 18 years of prolific business experiences and deep understanding of consumer, retail and media businesses. He has driven P&Ls of large businesses and made significant contributions in various organizations from the start-up phase of the business to profitable scaling up.

    Crime videos notice: SC asks Silicon Valley giants to reply by 9 January

    MUMBAI: The Supreme Court of India has sent notices to Facebook, Google and others over sharing of cyber crime videos. The two, and Yahoo and Microsoft have been asked to reply to the notice by NGO Prajwala by 9 January.

    The apex court had issued the notices on the plea seeking to curb the sharing of videos displaying sexual assault and cyber crime. The NGO had sought plea seeking for the enterprises to have a defined place to report rape videos and seek to block them.

    India’s top court was concerned over illicit activities and cyber abuse that allegedly occured on the four search engines. The court asked the Silicon Valley giants why they were not preventing users from behaviors including circulating rape videos and posting other private content without the subjects’ consent.

    As per a report by PTI, a bench consisting of judges M B Lokur and U U Lalit issued the notices. The court was hearing a letter that was written to former Chief Justice of India, H L Dattu, by the Hyderabad-based NGO. The letter was accompanied by a pen drive, which contained two rape videos.

    Aparna Bhatt, the NGO’s advocate, said that videos depicting sexual offences were shared on social networking sites and these companies should take steps to curb such cybercrime.

    Solicitor-General Maninder Singh, representing the Center, listed the steps taken by the union home ministry and CBI. The bench however said that the, if names of the victims were to be made public, it should be done only after conviction in the offence, and not immediately after the case was lodged.

    Although these companies often prevent offensive content on their platforms, the issue in this instance is the failure of communication between the tech giants, service providers, and government officials.

    This is not the maiden event the Indian court has had an issue with leading companies. In July 2016, the court concluded that Bing, Google and Yahoo put up advertisements for kits and clinics that helped people determine the sex of a foetus which is illegal in India.

    MUMBAI: The eCommerce industry has seen some major tectonic shifts — Snapdeal engineering vp Bhuvan Gupta, Flipkart’s Sharat Singh, Flipkart’s product office Punit Soni, Flipakart’s Mukesh Bansal and Ankit Nagor; and now, most recently, Snapdeal’s Chief Product officer Anand Chandrasekaran.

    Snapdeal co-founder Rohit Bansal confirmed the news with his tweet on Tuesday that read,  “@anandc proud of the super work by you and the product team. Hard to believe that this was just 1 yr. Farewell, keep rocking!”

    Chandrasekaran soon replied back tweeting,  “@rohitkbansal thanks for the support. We did in 1 what would take 3 years anywhere.”

    While Chandrasekaran refrained from making any official comments on his future endeavors, word has it that he is looking to start his own business.

    A  former Yahoo executive, Chandrasekaran joined Snapdeal last June to integrate more services, like Uber, into the company’s flagship app, a model similar to China’s popular WeChat. This high profile Silicon Valley recruit quit the Indian startup within a year, adding to the increasingly long list of top hires from the valley by the Indian Unicorns who are moving on to start their own businesses. As per a leading daily the industry has witnessed close to 17 major movements between  Flipkart, Snapdeal, Ola, Zomato and Paytm to launch  their own startups.

    When asked to comment on it, Snapdeal’s spokesperson further shared, “Anand has done some stellar work on the product side at Snapdeal. His insights and attention to detail have helped us traverse quickly towards launching and improving products at Snapdeal. We wish Anand the very best for his entrepreneurial journey ahead.” Snapdeal didn’t confirm any possible appointments to fill Chandrasekaran’s shoes any time soon.

    MUMBAI: The Network18 Group has roped in Manish Maheshawari as the new CEO of Web18. Maheshawari was previously with Indian eCommerce major Flipkart as VP and head of its seller ecosystem. Maheshawari will lead Network18’s digital and e-commerce assets which includes digital portals such as moneycontrol.com, ibnlive.com, in.com, firstpost.com, etc.

    As the CEO of Web18, Maheshawari’s immediate priorities will be  to drive content, monetization, new business, inorganic growth, and product portfolio management.

    Talking about the new appointment, Network18 group chairman Adil Zainulbhai said, “Manish brings with him a good mix of Silicon Valley tech product culture and an understanding of ground realities of India. Both these qualities will be crucial as we take Network18 to the next level of digital transformation. He has a proven track record of taking up projects and achieving a scale of tens of millions, building cross-functional teams that deliver in large setting with an unflinching focus on customer experience.”

    Maheshawari can be credited with growing Flipkart’s marketplace by 10x — from 10,000 sellers in February 2015 to over 100,000 sellers in February 2016.  Prior to that, he co-founded txtWeb and grew it from scratch with over 16 million mobile users in India alone.
