    Mathrubhumi Innovative Reporting on International day of Sign Language

    On the occasion of International day of Sign Language, Kerala's formidable media group, Mathrubhumi, took two thoughtful and empathetic initiatives to turn the spotlight on the topic. The leading story on the front page of the newspaper was delivered in a very surprising manner, through sign language. The section also had a QR code for people to learn more about the topic. In addition to this, Mathrubhumi News channel were drawn open at 7 AM, with the presence of speech and hearing specialist Chithra Prasad who delivered the news in sign language alongside our channel presenter. Chithra also touched upon on various interesting aspects of sign language, its cultural context, structure, grammar etc.

    MIB advises channels to carry sign language interpretation of R-Day ceremony

    MUMBAI: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has released an advisory to all the channels regarding the carriage of sign language interpretation of Republic Day ceremony. All the channels can carry the feed from DD Bharati/ DD News of the president of India's speech and Republic Day-parade with commentary free of cost. 

    Public broadcaster, Doordarshan, has indicated that DD Bharati will carry sign language interpretation of the President's Address to the nation on its channel from 7 pm to 7.30 pm on 25 January 2020. lt has further stated that on 26 January, DD News will carry the sign language interpretation of the commentary on its channel from 9 am to 11 am (or till the end).

    The advisory from the ministry said, "The media has always been in the forefront of taking up important issues concerning national integration, progress of disadvantaged sections of the society, etc. Therefore, the feed of DD News/DD Bharati is being made available free of cost. All TV channels interested in carrying the live telecast of the speech of the president of India and Republic Day-parade with commentary, may carry the signals of DD Bharati/DD News with sign language  interpretation and English/Hindi closed captions for the benefit of differently-abled people and make the event accessible to them."   

    The ministry had received requests to carry the telecast with sign language interpretation and English/Hindi closed captions to help people connect meaningfully with this important National day.

    MIB to TV: Use same language captions & audio descriptions for differently-abled

    NEW DELHI: All news and other television channels have been requested to carry the same language captions and audio descriptions along with the programmes and news reports for persons with disabilities.

    In a notice out on its website yesterday, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry said this was in compliance with concerns raised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DoEPwD) regarding formulation of Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) for achieving universal accessibility for persons with disabilities (PwDs).

    The note was addressed to all channels and also to the News Broadcasters Association (NBA), the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (lBF), and the Association of Regional Television Broadcasters.

    The DoEPwD had stressed that access to TV programmes for many persons with disabilities is denied due to lack of assistive technology. During discussion with various NGOs, a need was felt to prepare guidelines that include that broadcasting partners should develop and telecast a certain percentage of programmes with audio description and captioning as an experiment to the benefit of the target persons with disabilities.

    The note said the media has always been in the forefront of taking up important issues and causes including those for the welfare of the disadvantaged sections of society. In the recent past, Republic Day Parade commentary and Independence Day ceremony was carried with sign language interpretation for the benefit of differently abled people.
