  • No anti-incumbency against Siddaramaiah in Karnataka, says Congress leader Veerappa Moily at India Today Karnataka Panchayat

No anti-incumbency against Siddaramaiah in Karnataka, says Congress leader Veerappa Moily at India Today Karnataka Panchayat

MUMBAI: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddarmaiah won’t have to contend with the anti-incumbency factor in the May assembly election, senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily said Saturday.

During a wide-ranging conversation with India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai and Congress parliamentarian Mallikarjun Kharge at India Today Karnataka Panchayat 2018, Moily pointed out that the Congress had won by-elections in Karnataka and significantly improved its performance in local body polls.

Last year, the Congress won assembly bypolls in Gundlupet and Nanjangud despite an aggressive BJP campaign. And in the local body polls held the year before, it won well over 450 zilla panchayat seats – the lion’s share.

Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge sounded equally confident. When he said the Congress would return to power with a “thumping majority,” there were echoes of the confidence Siddaramaiah himself showed during a recent India Today interview.

In fact, the chief minister even ruled out the possibility of a hung assembly.

Voters in Karnataka will head to the polls on May 12, and counting is scheduled for May 15.

If Siddaramaiah manages to retain his post, he will be the first man to do so since Ramakrishna Hegde’s third consecutive term as Karnataka’s leader ended in 1988.

The Panchayat, scheduled for March 31, 2018 at the city’s Hotel Lalit Ashok, will have the newsmakers and decision-makers discuss a range of issues confronting the people of Karnataka.

    WHO WILL WIN KARNATAKA?

The March 31 conclave will set the agenda for the upcoming elections that are likely to have a far-reaching impact on national politics.

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, and party colleague Veerappa Moily will open the Panchayat with his participation in the session titled “Will Congress Retain Karnataka?”

    THE BIG KARNATAKA FACE-OFF

The Panchayat will bring political opposites face-to-face.

Union minister Prakash Javadekar and Congress leader Sachin Pilot and the BJP’s Sambit Patra versus the Congress’ Raj Babbar will debate bottom-line issues as India watches the high-stakes race for the May 12 vote.

The Congress’ Jitin Prasada and union minister Babul Supriyo will also be participating in the Panchayat face-offs.

    CULTURE AND IDENTITY POLITICS

With regional identity gaining prominence in the Karnataka campaign, speakers from a variety of sectors will exchange views in sessions titled “The Culture Wars” and “The Battle For Karnataka Pride: Whose Identity Is It Anyway”.

Participants will include actors Prakash Raj and Prakash Belawadi, union minister Babul Supriyo and the Congress’ Khushbu Sundar among others.

    FUTURE OF INDIA’S IT HUB

The Panchayat will discuss the future of IT industry in Bengaluru in the light of massive job losses in the technology sector.

TV18 launches ETV News Kannada, targets Rs 20 crore revenue

MUMBAI: With digitization setting in and general elections just round the corner, television networks are increasingly looking to tap regional markets. Not so long ago, Network18 acquired a posse of channels from the Ramoji Rao-founded ETV Group.

And now, its news broadcasting arm – TV18 – has gone ahead with the launch of ETV News Kannada that went live yesterday at 5:00 pm. G N Mohan has been roped in as editor, S Divaakar as business head and Subba Naidu as general manager, with Rajesh Raina as ETV group editor. The channel has 150 full-time employees and nearly 150 stringers on board with the latter to keep a close eye on political developments in each district of Karnataka.

While ETV News Kannada is currently operating out of its Hyderabad studio, the channel will shift base to Bengaluru post-elections and set up five to six bureaus in the state.

Raina sounds confident about the venture.  Speaking to indiantelevision.com, he says,“Ultimately, it is the survival of the fittest. ETV group has always stood for credibility and we are sure we will do well in the market.”. The pay TV channel has already invested Rs 5 crore and will be pumping in another Rs 10 crore in the coming months. “The Karnataka market is very fertile. A 10-second slot in the Hindi market is priced at Rs 500 whereas there, it is nearly Rs 1,500,” says Raina. He added that business worth Rs 50 lakh has already been booked by advertisers.

Official sources say the channel is targetting an ad revenue of Rs 20 crore.

Promotional campaigns have already begun across Karnataka through radio, transit advertising and digital with print to follow soon. The channel has decided to stay out of outdoor due to the high cost of hoardings in Bengaluru.

Election Express and an election satire are among the shows to be broadcast on the new channel. Initially, the channel will be available on cable TV with DTH platforms yet to be signed on. Karnataka chief minister K Siddaramaiah and Union petroleum and natural gas minister M Veerappa Moily are expected to grace the launch event.

More ETV news channels are expected to follow suit like ETV Himachal/Haryana in March, ETV News Gujarati in April, and ETV News Odia in July.

Kamal Haasan roots for Bengaluru to hold FICCI MEBC in future

BENGALURU: The fifth edition of the FICCI MEBC (Media and Entertainment Business Conclave) came to a new location this year to IT City Bengaluru. MEBC president and actor Kamal Haasan rooted for Bengaluru to be a recurring location for the conclave to be held.

Among the people present at the inaugural function were Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, Information and Broadcasting secretary Bimal Julka, Film Federation of India president Ravi Kottarakara, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president H D Gangaraju, Karnataka government IT BT and S&T secretary Srivatsa Krishna and Association of Bangalore Animation Industry president and technicolor India head Biren Ghose.

“Bengaluru is the second largest IT hub in the world after Silicon Valley and in the years to come we want to surpass even Silicon Valley to become the hub of innovation and convergence of media and entertainment,” said Krishna.

Kamal Haasan said that Bengaluru has all the things needed to make it an IT hub as well as keep FICCI MEBC going in the city. “We will give a push to the digital medium,” he added.

Siddaramaiah emphasised the need for building qualitative online content that will give advertisers innovative ways to reach out to people. “The industry should look at remaking old movies with good value and rich in vernacular content,” he said. He also urged the need for creating programming and growth friendly policies for industry.

Issues that were concerning the film industry were also raised by Kottarakara such as service tax and lack of support from banks for movie funding. “Film making is put in the ‘sinful’ industry along with gambling, drinking and smoking. It is not so,” he said.

The sessions for the two day event included ‘formulating and implementing a viable media and entertainment policy for a state’, ‘reshaping mobile entertainment in the era of digital revolution’, ‘the challenge of news: defining number one in the dizzying newscape’, ‘the broadcasting ecosystem in the digital era’, ‘customising global VFX for Indian cinema’, ‘emerging trends of Indian IP in animation and their exploitation’, ‘the emerging gaming industry in southern India’, ‘emerging technologies and the impact on media and entertainment industry’ and ‘changing trends in regional TV: ratings, content and formats’.
