Baaghi: A Rebel For Love – one for the masses; Shortcut Safari is Short cut to suffering

Baaghi is an action romance film. Sajid Nadiadwala makes sure his films are entertainers and don’t leave the masses out.  Like all love stories, two guys want the same girl. Since the girl loves only one of them, the other guy becomes the villain in the plot. The film bears similarities to the Indonesian production, The Raid: Redemption and is a remake of the Telugu movie Varsham.

Tiger Shroff, a Delhi lad, is on his way to Kerala to join a martial arts institution. He is a wayward guy and being sent here to be disciplined. On the train, he meets Shraddha Kapoor who is travelling to meet her grandmother. Both are attracted instantly and, in Kerala, their love blossoms further.

The master at the institution is an accomplished martial arts exponent. A strict disciplinarian, he is much respected. His son, Sudheer Babu, excels in martial art and uses his might to terrorize people. He sees Shraddha and falls for her and wants to marry her at any cost. Sparks fly between Sudheer and Tiger.

Shraddha’s father, Sunil Grover, is an opportunist and when offered a bagful of money, he agrees to marry off Shraddha with Sudheer. To separate her from Tiger, he concocts a story which Shraddha believes but is still not willing to marry Sudheer.

Sudheer’s father, the master of the institution, cautions Sudheer not to come between two lovers and marry where he decides on the girl. Sudheer has no scruples and poisons his farther, there being no other way to get him out of his way. He then shifts his operations to Thailand in a ten storey building. While Shraddha is kept on the top floor, the other nine are like layers of shields for her with armed and qualified fighters.

Tiger has left Kerala and is living a normal life when Grover approaches him. Shraddha has been abducted and he offers Tiger money to find her. Tiger needs the money for the treatment of a small child he has adopted while living with another student at the Institution.

Now wasting time to find Sudheer, he enters the ring to fight a no holds barred bout of a fight with a regular winner and knocks him out in one kick. The bout is being watched on a close circuit camera and his plan works. Now, Sudheer’s men are after him.

After some more fights and chases, Tiger is assumed dead. But, Shraddha is sure he will come to rescue her. And he does. After negotiating the nine floors full of goons, he is finally face to face with Sudheer. He seems to have learnt some secrets of hand to hand combat which Sudheer missed.

The story is typical and the direction is apt. What makes the film interesting is the fresh casting and action. Considering this is only his second film, the audience response to Tiger’s entry and during action scenes is tremendous. He and petite Shraddha make a good pair. Grover is good in light scenes and as scheming father. Sudheer is menacing enough for Tiger’s winning look hard-fought.

Considering this is a romantic film, it needed a couple of chartbusters but has only one song, Sab tera…which appeals.  The cinematography is good.

Baaghi is a single screen entertainer after a long gap, besides having appeal for young viewers and is set to be a decent earner.

    Producer: Sajid Nadiawdwala.

    Director: Sabbir Khan.

Cast: Tiger Shroff, Shraddha Kapoor, Sudheer Babu, Sunil Grover, Sanjay Mishra.

    Shortcut Safaari..Short cut to suffering

Amitabha Singh, the producer and cinematographer associated with some award winning films has turned to direction with Shortcut Safaari. His earlier association with a children’s film was Chillar Party as a cinematographer. He worked as a DOP on Khosla Ka Ghosla and was the producer (with NFDC) of the national award winning Gujarati film, The Good Road, India’s nomination to the Oscars. But, direction is another ball game altogether.

A group of school kids belonging to the nature society of a school are taken on a day out to a nature park to learn firsthand the gift that we have in the form of nature and all that it breeds. The tour done, the kids are divided on return trip in three small vans. The teacher in charge is keener on keeping her date with her beau, ditches her students and hitchhikes on the pillion of her man.

While the students in two vans depart, the third one takes a little longer with a couple of students arguing over sitting arrangements. When they are on the road finally, the kids see a higher HP car overtake them and their fragile egos incite their driver to overtake that car. The driver hardly seems to have control on his small van but takes the challenge. He takes a shortcut, drives recklessly and lands up in a jungle. His van has bumped into a tree.

The driver needs help and leaves the kids to find a help in nearby village!! Promising to return soon, he leaves the students alone to fend for themselves. What follows is an ordeal on the viewer. The driver has vanished. The students spend the night in the van but the night is eventful as funny looking, animated hyenas, leopard etc. visit them, dance on their van and vanish! The students, despite their exposure to nature and coming as they do from high end school, think hyenas are dogs and the leopard is a cat! So much for education!!

The students, fight among themselves, sing and dance and roam the jungle to find a way out. So far, there seems to be not a soul around except a caricature of a leopard. But, as the film progresses, the jungle suddenly seems over populated. There are a couple of buffoons, supposed to provide comic relief, with toy guns who want to kill the sole leopard so that the jungle can be turned into real estate bonanza! Mall and all that!!

The film flashes Jimmy Shergill as its lead actor and you wonder where he is? Finally, he does show up in a dress weirder than that any self-styled baba ever wore. He seems to be the self-appointed keeper of the forest.

Shortcut Safaari is a film with no sense for script, let alone on for a film catering to children. The direction matches the script and is full of inconsistencies including the students cast showing varying ages. The jungle life and the few animals depicted are a joke with poor animation. Its songs are good. The editor has no scope here; he could have chopped the whole film if permitted. Some kids act well, some don’t. All others playing parents and teacher are non-actors, nor do they bother to act.

Shortcut Safaari is a children oriented film from which children are better off kept away.

Producer: Xebec Films Pvt. Ltd., Kashyap A Shah, Amigos Fin-o- tainment.

    Director: Amitabha Singh.

Cast: Aashi Rawal, Sharvil Patel, Mann Patel, Deah Tandon, Ugam Khetani, Stuti Dwivedi, Hardil Kanabar, Jimmy Sheirgill.

  • Box Office: ‘ABCD 2’ collects Rs 45.5 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘ABCD 2’ collects Rs 45.5 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Youth and the growing fan following for young stars, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, earned a positive welcome to ABCD 2 with a Rs 14.4 crore opening day. The film maintained similar figures on Saturday, not improving but also not dropping. With figures being the best at over Rs 17 crore, the film ended its opening weekend with Rs 45.5 crore. The film will have to sustain well through the week to justify its high cost. It has the advantage of three small films as oppositions next week.

Hamari Adhuri Kahaani pays for being a depressing film with a poor script. Not designed to be an entertainer, the film does not even tug at one’s emotions. Having opened to a weak response, it stays that way to collect Rs 26.65 crore in its first week. The film dropped drastically in its second weekend.

Dil Dhadakne Do has made the most of poor opposition and has managed to have some hold at the box office to collect Rs 15.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 69.9 crore.

On the other hand, Tanu Weds Manu Returns maintains a strong trend holding its own with collection figures of Rs 8.25 crore in its fourth week to take its three week tally to Rs 146.38 crore.

Piku collected Rs 15 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week total to Rs 79.92 crore, whereas Gabbar Is Back collected Rs 17 lakh in seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 80.22 crore.

  • ‘Anybody Can Dance 2’: Can they?

‘Anybody Can Dance 2’: Can they?

MUMBAI: Anybody Can Dance 2 (ABCD2) is a sequel to ABCD (2013) and is also about hip hop dancers who aspire to make it big. Wanting to cash in on the fair success and appreciation of the earlier version, the sequel seeks to be more ambitious. It features rising young stats, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, as against the unknown, non-glamorous faces of the original.

Varun is a pizza delivery boy whose mother was a Padmashri awardee classical dancer. Dancing is in his genes but being today’s youth, his choice is hip hop. He has formed his own group along with other such boys. This group has just one girl among them, Shraddha, who works at a ladies salon nearby. This lot is from a distant Mumbai suburb working their way to break into the middleclass bracket.

The group is full of enthusiasm but is rudderless. They have nobody to guide them and whatever they learn about dancing is through videos. They decide to make it big and participate in a dance competition. They dance well but are soon exposed for having copied the whole performance step by step from a foreign group. They are disqualified and jeered.

This may be a small group from almost nowhere but, taking an indirect dig at the contemporary media, their ‘shame’ makes headlines all over with captions “same to shame”! So much so, even dance competition organisers all over the world know about them. The makers could have used this kind of imagination on the script.

The boys are devastated and most of them opt out. Only Shraddha and a couple of others still have faith in Varun who wants to regroup or form another group and earn fame through the backdoor, which is to participate in the international hip hop competition at Las Vegas, US.

The boys need guidance and soon they find a guru in Prabhu Deva, a renowned dancer whom every dancer and aspiring dancer worth his salt knows. However, the route to the Vegas hip hop competition is through all India qualifier at Bangalore. Prabhu prepares them for the qualifier. But, when they arrive at Bangalore, they are welcomed with a chant of “Cheaters, Cheaters”! One of the judges decides to disqualify the group.

One thought a judge at such events was as much an outsider as the participants; they are not the organizers. The judge even wants to know who Prabhu is, so much for being a celebrity dancer who even a dance competition judge does not know!

Expectedly, the boys qualify to participate at the Vegas event. Like all Indian sports and competition films, they are the underdogs. The usual routine follows, qualifier, quarter finals, semi-finals and, eventually, after much ill-conceived dramatic moments, the finals.

ABCD 2 has nothing in the name of a script. Even documentaries have better ones. The director has no clue where the film is going and, in the absence of anything cogent to go on, spends over 38 minutes on songs and dance (most of it cacophonous) and rest of the time on the group rehearsing in this marathon 153-minute trial of patience.

This is a musical and yet it has poor musical score and almost nil romance. All relations are cosmetic. Dialogue writing shows incompetence. Lyrics, when audible, fail to make sense or blend with the situation. Also, considering this is a film about dance, choreography leaves much to be desired except for the last two songs. The positive in the film is its visual appeal, which makes it tolerable to an extent.

As for performances, considering it is a dance film, though they may be on the same side, pitting Varun against Prabhu was a bad idea. Shraddha Kapoor is just passable in dances. As for acting, nobody bothers. Bringing Lauren Gottlieb as a third angle in a romance that is not, proves a dud. Prabhu’s dancing is not much help either.

ABCD 2, as expected, has taken a good opening thanks to the expectations of youth but the word of mouth is not good and sustaining at the box office will be a task.

    Producer: Siddharth Roy Kapoor (Disney)

    Director: Remo D’Souza

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Lauren Gottlieb, Prabhu Dheva, Dharmesh Yelande

  • ‘ABCD2’ in 3D will bring out the best in Indian dancing: Shraddha Kapoor

‘ABCD2’ in 3D will bring out the best in Indian dancing: Shraddha Kapoor

NEW DELHI: For Shraddha Kapoor, who had made a mark with Aashiqui 2, dancing in a film like ABCD2 did not come easy but she surprised her fellow cast members including Varun Dhawan when she attempted to match their energy.

Kapoor is particularly grateful to Remo Fernandes for training her for this sequel to the earlier ABCD, which came in 2013. The film also stars Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal and Dharmesh Yelande in supporting roles. The movie is directed by Remo D’Souza and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapoor under the banner of UTV-Disney Pictures.

The story explores the real life struggle of of four boys Rohit, Pavan, Suresh and Vernon who are part of a dance institute named Fictitious Dance Academy and take up the challenge to win the World Hip-Hop dance championship.

Belonging to a non-dancer background, Kapoor, who has earlier also acted in Ek Villain, said at a press meet here that she sweated it out really hard and proved that actually ‘Any Body Can Dance’.

Kapoor proved her dancing mettle in the song ‘Sun Sathiya,’ which was also there in the original film where Lauren Gottlieb danced to the tunes of this catchy number.

Asked about the challenges she faced, she said, “It was really hard for me to match the energy of other dancers as all of them had taken training somewhere. I did learn a bit of dancing at my school days but had never taken any proper training for the same. The film has changed my life and my body completely. Before this I use to dance in bathroom, in front of mirror, in my room or at birthday parties. I always wanted to dance openly on stage but somewhere I was under-confident or shy to dance in front of so many people. This is all because of Remo sir that he made me confident enough to give my best and whatever positive comments I am getting for my work will made Remo sir proud.”

The film also features the song ‘Bezubaan’ from the original film, which was a hit among the masses and is now titled as ‘Bezubaan Phirse,’ where the stars show the best of their dance moves.

Dhawan plays the character of Suresh in the film and features in the recently released song ‘Chunar.’ Asked why he agreed to star in the film, he said, “As an actor, you always listen to the script first, but Remo sir did a very unique thing. He showed me the documentary of ‘Fictitious Group’ who also participated in India’s Got Talent. He showed us footage of dancers from America, China and different countries. When it was announced that India was participating in the global talent series and made it to the finals, I felt so proud and patriotic. I got really emotional and that is why I said yes to it.”

Raghav Juyal who gave birth to the slow motion dance shared his knowledge of dance with the audience. He is often called as Crockroax, which is an amalgamation of being powerful like a crocodile and creepy like a cockroach. “Earlier people used to mock at the dancers and call them as ‘Nachaniya’ but now value is being attached with dancing as an art. This kind of revolution is shown in the film and I would just say that parents should support their children and as I always say Fame is a devil and art is an angel. Fame will come and go but art will always be within.”

Asked why is Disney was attached with ABCD2 as the story did not give any fairy tale kind of feeling, Disney India vice president and head, marketing & distribution – studios Amrita Pandey said, “It is a very inspiring story about an underdog dance troupe and has strong emotion of heart. When you’ll watch the film, you’ll see that it is not only about fun and dance. ABCD2 inspires you and Disney always promotes stories, which inspires you in a way or the other.”

Bang Bang…. Just half a bang for your money..

MUMBAI: Don’t try to relate the title with what is going in the film. It’s a film about a man on a mission and being a Hindi film there has to be a pretty woman accompanying him so that they can fit in some song and dance routine.

Hrithik Roshan’s assignment is to steal the Kohinoor diamond from under the nose of the British authorities. The word spreads and Danny Denzongpa and Pawan Arora, who were planning to steal it too, find out about his mission. They think since now it is with Hrithik, it would be easier for them to lay their hands on the diamond.

But the job is not as easy as Danny thought it would be. After all, Hrithik is an ex-army man and proficient in Kung Fu as well as gunfighting. Besides, he is an ace swimmer and knows every stunt in the book and then some more. As usual, Danny’s goons chase him in dozens on roads as well as in the sea. Hrithik finishes them all.

Katrina Kaif, Hrithik’s companion, has no alternative but to stay with Hrithik because the villains have seen her with him and may use her as a bait to lure him.

Hrithik was serving in Kargil when his brother, Jimmy Shergill, was killed by Danny. He leaves the army to join the Indian secret service. He knows Danny’s informers are in the service. The story of Kohinoor is concocted with the help of British secret service, MI6. That way Danny would come to find Hrithik rather than the other way around.

But, Danny, who makes an appearance in the beginning, vanishes until much later leaving the task of finishing Hrithik to his goons. Pawan Arora is also involved and plants a device to see where Katrina meets Hrithik. That turns out to be exactly what Hrithik wanted. When the cops arrive with Pawan and his goons, Hrithik, though shot, escapes after leaving the diamond on the spot. Katrina is kidnapped and Danny is livid because the Kohinoor he got from her is a fake.

Hrithik traces Katrina to Danny’s den. He has come equipped with enough material to blow up Danny’s palace.  Danny escapes to felicitate a final chase, first on road and later in water when Danny is escaping in a sea plane. Hrithik fells the sea plane with harpoon shots. The plane is on fire. Hrithik enters to save the handcuffed Karina and leaves Danny to die the same way he killed Shergill.

There is nothing about the film one has not watched in recent past. In fact, it can be called a bad version of Ek Tha Tiger. There is not much happening in the first half. Second half is aboutchases and gun fights. The script is weak. Direction is passable. Cinematography is good. Couple of songs have appeal. Hrithik and Katrina make an attractive pair. It is nice to see Danny and Pawan after some time.

    Haider …. RIP Shakespeare!

Vishal Bhardwaj is a man who sources his films from Shakespeare. For him, it works well because there is no copyright and no price to pay and he can pretend to be intellectual. Sadly, his intellectualism costs crores to unqualified corporate houses, that want to be in the film business. In Haider, Bhardwaj adapts Shakespeare’s Hamlet. To say that he does no justice to the original and road rolls it would be an understatement.

It is hard to call when the last film that was based on a regional problem worked at the box office. Haider is about a family’s Kashmir problem—and yet it has nothing to do with Kashmir. It is in fact about a family feud, sex, disloyalty and incest. It is a film with little by way of script. Haider takes all sorts of liberties, twists the script to its convenience and, in the process, and makes a joke of its writer, director and actors.

Terrorism is the rule of the land in Kashmir and the young Haider, Shahid Kapur, is already embroiled in it when his mother, Tabu, discovers a pistol in his school bag, a way to show that Shahid has been initiated into terrorism. That too without a cause or a reason—those follow only much later when his father, whom he adores, is killed for being an accomplice of terrorists.

That moment comes when Shahid returns from studies in Aligarh. He finds his family devastated: his father has been killed and he realises that his mother has been sleeping with his Chahcha who actually got his father killed.

But instead of taking out his anger on his mother or uncle, he conveniently becomes a terrorist. In this cock and bull story, if you are angry with your mother, you take it out on your motherland, dig? Because Shahid’s mother, Tabu, sleeps around with his uncle, Kay Kay Menon, he becomes a terrorist only to kill them. No matter that terrorism means killing your own countrymen.

Sadly, nowhere does the film match Indian sensibilities. The script is such a chalta-hai kind it changes tone with every scene. It takes the viewer to be a total moron. The Indian army has been shown in bad light throughout. The Kashmiris are shown in bad light with no sense of their priorities.

With this kind of a story, the actors have little to work with. Shahid is totally at loss with whatever he is doing. Most of the time, he is made to act like a lunatic. Shraddha Kapoor appears at the whim and fancy of the director. Tabu’s character is ill-defined. That you don’t know if she is in love or is a nymphomaniac; she even kisses her son on the lips. As for Tabu and Menon’s relationship, it is still not okay with the Indian audience especially since he keeps referring to her as ‘Bhbhijaan’.

As for the script, Haider is poor; its adaptation of Hamlet is pathetic. There is no direction worth its name. The musical score is poor. Editing does not exist. The background score is monotonous. Dialogue, for a Shakespeare drama, is a let-down.

Haider is a big let-down commercially.
