LG research: viewers keen to spend and shop through the connected TV screen

MUMBAI: The humble television has evolved from mere entertainment box to potential shopping portal, as new research from LG Ad Solutions reveals viewers are itching to flex their purchasing power from the comfort of their sofas. A whopping 62 per cent of connected TV viewers fancy interactive advertisements, with 56 per cent wishing they could splash cash directly through it.

The February 2025 survey of 1,210 American screen-gazers paints a picture of consumers increasingly susceptible to what flickers before their eyes. Among connected TV viewers, an impressive 79 per cent admit to being influenced by adverts in their shopping decisions, while 63 per cent regularly discover new brands through the box. Nearly half have actually followed through with a purchase after seeing a TVC in the past quarter.

“The days when people merely absorbed adverts passively are gone with the wind,” says a marketing guru. “Today’s viewers reach for their wallets almost as quickly as they reach for the remote—particularly when offered a discount.”

LG television owners appear especially vulnerable to advertising’s siren call, showing influence rates a stunning 28 per cent higher than their counterparts. These same viewers are 20 per cent more likely to wish they could shop through their screens—statistics guaranteed to make marketing directors drool into their expense accounts.

When it comes to actually parting with cash after seeing an advert, mobile phones remain the weapon of choice, with 60 per cent of viewers grabbing their handsets to complete purchases. Laptops and in-store visits follow at 41 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. Connected TVs themselves account for 22 per cent of purchases—a figure that jumps by 20 per cent among LG TV owners specifically.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 71 per cent of connected TV viewers confess to keeping their mobiles within arm’s reach whilst watching—creating what industry types call a “second-screen opportunity” and what everyone else calls “modern life.”

The research also reveals surging interest in free ad-supported television (FAST) services, with 77 per cent of connected TV users regularly tuning into these platforms. LG’s own service—rather blandly christened “LG Channels”—now offers over 350 live channels and 7,000 on-demand options for the discerning viewer who prefers not to pay.

With nine in 10 consumers in the US now using an internet-connected TV and 60 per cent preferring free streaming with adverts, Fast platforms have become fertile ground for shoppable innovation. Regular Fast users show 12 per cent higher purchase rates after viewing adverts than the general population.

The report reveals multiple methods viewers are open to using for purchasing through their televisions:
    * 70 per cent fancy saving products to a wish list directly on the TV
    * 67 per cent would send a text for more information or discount codes
    * 62 per cent are willing to scan QR codes to checkout on mobile devices
    * 62 per cent would use voice commands to add items to their cart
    * 60 per cent would save shipping/payment details for quick checkout on the TV
    * 54 per cent are open to an AI assistant contacting them via email, text or social media

Younger viewers aged 18-34 show particular enthusiasm, with 21 per cent higher interest in interactive TV adverts than the general population.

For brands looking to capitalize on this trend, the report suggests a three-pronged approach: test creative variations, leverage Fast platforms, and utilize custom landing pages for a seamless shopping experience.

When it comes to persuading viewers to part with their cash, discounts and promotions prove most effective, with 57 per cent of viewers citing offers as their primary purchase driver. Product features (42 per cent) and attractive visuals (32 per cent) also factor into purchasing decisions, while one in four viewers are influenced by the ability to click through to learn more.

The creative elements of adverts significantly impact engagement levels:
    * Time-sensitive offers showed a staggering 12.4x higher purchase intent
    * Click-to-landing page functionality delivered 8.1x higher purchase intent
    * Special offers generated 5.6x higher purchase intent
    * Concise messaging resulted in 5x higher brand consideration
    * Clear calls-to-action produced 4x higher brand consideration
    * Dynamic creative animation yielded 2x higher purchase intent

A case study highlighted in the report showed a major quick service restaurant chain achieving 2.5x more QR code scans and 10 per cent lower cost per reach by following these best practices during a 24-day holiday campaign.

The report offers tailored advice for different retail categories based on analysis of TV advertising patterns throughout 2024:
    * Clothing and apparel brands should increase connected TV spending during peak periods (Q2 and Q4) to counter higher traditional TV spending from competitors
    * Electronics brands should maintain consistent connected TV spending throughout the year, with increased investment during holiday and post-holiday periods
    * Grocery and consumer packaged goods companies should maintain steady levels all year, with some increase during summer months
    * Appliance brands should boost connected TV presence during summer to compete for share of voice ahead of Labour Day sales
    * Restaurant brands should increase spending towards the end of each month and create special offers to drive engagement

As one retail executive put it: “The living room is becoming the new shopping centre, and the remote control is the new credit card.”

For those concerned about a dystopian future where white goods join the sales pitch, prepare yourselves—14 per cent of consumers expressed interest in shopping through their refrigerator, while 10 per cent fancy making purchases via their car dashboard or washing machine. One wonders if one day the toilet might suggest a particular brand of paper.

LG Ad Solutions recommends advertisers implement the following strategy:
    1. Test various creative variations and calls-to-action for optimal results
    2. Leverage connected TV native ads and custom landing pages for immersive experiences
    3. Capitalise on the shift to free ad-supported streaming services to find new audiences

The message for retailers is crystal clear: American armchair shoppers are poised with their plastic—and all they need is the right button to press.

Are there any lessons in this for Indian advertisers and for Indian platforms?

    Indeed.

Most Indian connected TV owners are international travelers who have been exposed to Fast channels during their travels, but have been loathe to reach for the purchase button because fulfilment can take longer in markets like the US than in India where goods can be delivered in 10 minutes. By consistently following some of these best practices and adapting them to Indian nuances, advertisers on connected TVs can get a better bang for their buck.

  • Reviews and recommendations dominate 70% of shopping conversations on Twitter

Reviews and recommendations dominate 70% of shopping conversations on Twitter

Mumbai: Shopping is a hot topic in the social space, and especially so during the festive season in India. While shoppers turn to services like Twitter to discuss their big splurge plans, do these conversations about brands and products actually impact sales? With the festive season in full swing, microblogging platform Twitter’s latest #LetsTalkShop report finds out how marketers can engage the festive shopper more effectively.

Twitter partnered with Publicis to study 2,400 consumers in India on leading social platforms. The study reveals the sentiment that is driving conversations and shopping decisions today, while also throwing light on content consumption patterns and, most importantly, expectations from brands, both in terms of customer service and content.

Through these insights, Twitter has revealed how brand conversation powers shopping. Twitter wants to help marketers lean into shopping conversations and drive festive success this season.

Moreover, Diwali conversations on Twitter also open doors for Indian brands to connect and engage with the leaned-in shoppers who are looking to spend during the festivities. The service witnessed more than 3.1 million tweets about Diwali in the festive week (30 October 2021 to 6 November 2021).

As we head to the festive highs this year, Twitter India country lead-large client solutions, Kanika Mittal said, “Shopping has always been a social experience and the festive season is one of the busiest times of year on Twitter. Today, online brand conversation has become a trusted, everyday part of the shopping process. Our data reveals that 97 per cent of people surveyed seek comments and opinions from others on the service, with reviews and recommendations dominating 70 per cent of shopping conversations. Trust, too, plays a major role. 9 out of 10 consumers are more likely to consider a purchase after seeing someone else’s opinion about a brand or product. In fact, for the majority of shoppers, these spontaneous conversations are as impactful on purchase decisions as traditional reviews. So yes, talk matters.”

Reviews and recommendations on Twitter take a front-seat during festive shopping

Connecting with other shoppers to share experiences and make decisions based on these exchanges forms a significant part of today’s tech-savvy consumers’ purchase decisions. As a testament to this, the report indicates that 9 in 10 consumers are more likely to consider a purchase after seeing someone else’s opinion about a brand or product.

Reviews and recommendations dominate 70 per cent of shopping conversations on Twitter today. For consumers, Twitter has been one of the go-to services for them to help them in their purchase journey, as more than half (51 per cent) of Indian online shoppers agree that ads or tweets on Twitter help them discover new products or brands.

55 per cent state that reviews and comments on Twitter are more trustworthy than on any other social media platform.

Consumer Excitement And Buying Inclination During Diwali

The study reveals that the build-up to the festivities is the most exciting for consumers as 50 per cent of the Diwali conversation on Twitter takes place before the festival, whereas 35 per cent of the conversation happens on the day of the festival.

92 per cent of festive conversations around Diwali are mostly positive or neutral in tonality, with 75 per cent of mentions of Diwali on Twitter being linked to ‘joy’.

As brands increasingly tap into the power of click ‘play’ to engage with their audiences, the report notes that 64 per cent of people on Twitter enjoy watching video ads to see what brands have to offer.

Four in 10 shoppers are on the lookout for deals and promotional offers from brands around Diwali.

Brand conversations: A beaming opportunity for businesses

Brand conversation is increasingly becoming influential at every stage of the purchase journey and has the power to influence shopping decisions. As a matter of fact, 93 per cent of Indian shoppers recall brand conversations online before making a purchase.

In fact, shoppers on Twitter consider 4 out of 5 (80 per cent) of the brand conversations as “trustworthy.” 88 per cent of brand conversations made people feel differently about the brand. Among consumers that made a purchase, 62 per cent said that their experience with brand conversation made them much more likely to consider the purchase.

Evidently, consumers are increasingly seeking meaningful dialogue with brands. This festive season, engaging audiences beyond ‘clicks’ and moving towards ‘conversations’ is the route that brands must take to drive consideration and purchase behaviour.

  • Sara Ali Khan is taken by surprise in Flipkart Shopsy’s new TVC

Sara Ali Khan is taken by surprise in Flipkart Shopsy’s new TVC

Mumbai: Flipkart’s social commerce platform Shopsy has rolled out its latest campaign called ‘It happens only on Shopsy’ with Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan.

The campaign highlights the brand’s value proposition as a hyper value platform with unbelievably low prices depicted through its tagline ‘Shopsy Pe Prices Aise Lage Free Jaise.’

Created by Tilt Brand Solutions, the campaign features two ad films that are based on the reality of the current market where customers are so accustomed to high prices that they are taken by surprise when they receive high value products at incredibly low prices. “The campaign aims to reach the masses specifically in tier 2 and beyond cities across the country,” said the brand in a statement.

The two specially curated ad films are aligned keeping in mind Shopsy’s key value propositions – affordability and convenience. In the first one, Sara encounters with a delivery person who refuses to accept extra money for an item worth Rs five. She is awestruck by the price and her excitement soon turns into a dilemma as she cannot fathom the item being priced so low.

In the second film, a woman, played by Ayesha Raza Mishra, is seen standing in the queue, when a girl, enacted by Sara, approaches towards her and requests the woman to hold her bag for a moment. It then suddenly turns into a conversation when the woman compliments the bag after which the girl offers to give her bag to the woman. The girl immediately empties her bag and gives it to the woman educating her about the unique offers and wide range of choices available on Shopsy.

“Our priority with Shopsy since inception, has been to pay close attention to our customers’ nuanced needs and provide them with best offerings leveraging Flipkart’s established delivery networks, infrastructure and technology,” commented Flipkart SVP of growth and monetisation Prakash Sikaria. “Today’s shoppers prefer an expansive range of offerings that is both easily accessible and value driven. Launched in July 2021, Shopsy aims to make digital commerce accessible across India through a zero-commission marketplace to boost local entrepreneurship.

  • Global app downloads totalled 36.1 bn in Q4 2021

Global app downloads totalled 36.1 bn in Q4 2021

Mumbai: Global app downloads reached 36.1 billion in Q4 2021, a 2.7 per cent year-over-year increase on Google Play, according to the latest data published by Sensor Tower.

The mobile app space is still in a state of transformation amid the ongoing global pandemic. While categories such as shopping, finance, and entertainment dominated the download list, others too bounced back amid the pandemic lockdowns across the world.

According to Sensor Tower’s Q4 202 Store Intelligence Data Digest, finance and tools were among the quarter’s top categories with 39 per cent and 26 per cent year-over-year growth on Google Play, respectively. However, cryptocurrency and investing apps gained momentum with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) emerging as a top trend.

Instagram had its best quarter since at least 2014, with installs up 10 per cent from its previous high in Q32021. Instagram was Meta’s first app to take the top spot since Whatsapp in Q42019.

The last quarter was also the second time in the past two years that Tik Tok was not the top app by worldwide downloads. The last app to surpass Tik Tok in a quarter was Zoom in Q2 2020.

Meanwhile, record-breaking eight mobile games, including PUBG Mobile from Tencent, Honor of Kings from Tencent, and Genshin Impact from miHoYo generated more than $1 billion globally from the App Store and Google Play in 2021. PUBG Mobile, localised as Game For Peace in China and Battlegrounds Mobile in India, and Honor of Kings rank as the number one and number two revenue-generating mobile titles worldwide this year, accumulating $2.8 billion each, up nine per cent and 14.7 per cent year-over-year, respectively.

  • Amazon to pull the plug on Prime Now globally

Amazon to pull the plug on Prime Now globally

New Delhi: E-commerce giant Amazon has decided to pull the plug on its standalone Prime Now delivery app globally. The platform was launched in 2014. Its two-hour delivery options will now be integrated on its main app and website.

It is important to note that Amazon has already moved the Prime Now experience to Amazon in India, Japan and Singapore and retired the Prime Now app and website. It is now suspending the operations in all other countries as well. “To make this experience even more seamless for customers, we are moving the experience from a separate Prime Now app onto the Amazon app and website so customers can shop all Amazon has to offer from one convenient location,” it said in a blog post.

Now, there will be one convenient app for shopping, tracking orders and contacting customer service.

“In the US, we began making two-hour delivery from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market available on Amazon in 2019. Globally, we’ll move our third-party partners and local stores to the Amazon shopping experience before the Prime Now app and website are retired later this year,” said Amazon vice-president of grocery, Stephanie Landry, adding that the platform will be completely shut down by the end of 2021.

The company said that the feedback from customers who have shopped for two-hour delivery on Amazon has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s a natural next step to simplify the ultrafast delivery experience globally. In the US, customers can now easily add items from their Alexa shopping list to their Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market shopping cart.
