24 has attracted youngsters to TV: Anil Kapoor

KOLKATA: Whether it’s on the social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, or applauds from the Hollywood counterparts, Anil Kapoor’s Hindi adaptation of the international TV series, 24 has been received quite well.

Basking in the glory of his debut television production, the actor on Wednesday said that the biggest achievement of the thriller is that it has managed to hook youngsters. “The best thing is that youngsters who never used to watch TV are hooked to it. They have something to watch now. Even men have something to watch on TV besides the family soaps. I have heard that women and kids also like it,” said Anil while addressing reporters.

“Usually my family is divided in opinion when it comes to my ventures. There is groupism in my family, but everybody loves 24,” added the 56-year-old, who was last seen in films like Shootout At Wadala and Race 2.

Directed by Abhinay Deo, 24 airs on Colors on Friday and Saturday. In the show, Anil plays the lead role of Jai Singh Rathod, the chief of an anti-terrorist unit. The show captures 24-hours of Rathod’s life where he struggles to prevent the assassination of a prime ministerial candidate and also save his daughter and wife who have been kidnapped by terrorists.

Anil cleared the air about the show being adapted to the big screen saying he had only the rights to the TV format.

When he was quizzed about not foraying on television earlier, Anil said, “I had been offered to judge reality shows, but I didn’t feel good enough. However, with 24, it felt like my calling. I have never been scared of failure and I thought the maximum that could happen was the show wouldn’t work,” he said.

On a lighter note, he expressed how he wanted the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who recently announced his retirement plans from Test cricket, to continue playing cricket for the rest of his life. “I wish he could go on and on for life, but Test cricket is a physical sport, and gradually youngsters have to take over. The demands are tough on the body,” he said.

Despite lower income, releases in Q1-2014 help Eros post higher PAT for Q2-2014

BENGALURU:  Eros International Media Limited (Eros) posted 12.8 per cent lower revenue for Q2-2014 at Rs 201.47 crore as compared to the Rs 231.05 crore for Q2-2013 and 3.7 per cent higher than the Rs 194.2 crore for Q1-2014. Eros Managing Director Sunil Lulla said, “Eros has given strong financial and operational performance in the first half of the fiscal, especially, given that we have had no high budget releases in the first half of FY 2014 compared to two high budget releases in the first half of FY 2013. The company’s performance was underpinned by the all-round success of movies like Grand Masti, Raanjhaana, Go Goa Gone and our overseas release of Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani all of which have been monetised over multiple distribution channels.”

The company says that its performance during HY1-14 was also backed by other overseas releases like Furkey, Lootera, Shootout at Wadala, Ek thi Dhayan, Phata Poster Nikla Hero and within the country through regional films such as Rangeelay (Punjabi) and Tamil films. Also, television revenues for Q2-2014 were mainly underpinned by a combination of catalogue monetisation as well as delivering new films under the previously announced licensing agreement with Viacom 18.

Interest cost for Q2-2014 at Rs 6.2 crore was more than double (2.26 times) the Rs 2.74 crore for Q2-2013 and 34.5 per cent more than the Rs 4.61 crore in Q1-2014. Other expense for Q2-2014 at Rs 11.8 crore was 42.8 per cent lower than the Rs 20.63 crore for Q2-2013 and 23.6 per cent lower than the Rs 15.45 crore for Q1-2014.

EBIT for Q2-2014 at Rs 50.31 crore was 16.4 per cent higher than the Rs 42.35 crore for Q2-2013 and 9.1 per cent more than the Rs 46.1 crores for Q1-2014.

Said Lulla, “We remain excited about our collaboration with HBO Asia and the opportunity it presents among the premium television market within India. We are also looking forward to the high profile releases in the remainder of the fiscal year  such as Ram Leela, Kochadaiyaan, Happy Ending, and a number of smaller budget high concept movies that are slated to be released in the fiscal under review.”

Eros says that its collaboration with HBO Asia continues to receive an encouraging response after the launch of its two new advertisement free channels in February 2013 – HBO Defined and HBO Hits that are not only available on Dish and Airtel DTH platforms, but also on digital cable platforms such as Hathway and GTPL.

Further during Q2-2014, the company’s online entertainment portal Eros Now added a host of Bollywood titles acquired from UTV and Viacom to its movie subscription service.

MAX, the premium Hindi movies and special events channel brings to you the World television Premier of this year’shardcore action gangster film, ‘SHOOTOUT AT WADALA’ on Friday, 18th October at 9PM and Sunday 20th October at 1PM only on MAX.

The movie revolves around the character of ManoharSurve alias ManyaSurve, a decent college going student, good in studies and very success oriented. Manohar’s fate changes when he tries to save his older brother,BhargavSurve from a scuffle with Bhaskar’s goons. The brothers end up killing one of the goons for which they land up in jail. The movie then turns into a plot of dare devilry and strategic planning and thus gives birth to ManyaSurve. This film is based on a true story about the first-ever registered encounter by the Mumbai Police, which took place on November 1, 1982.

Speaking about playing the central character,ManoharSurve, who turns into the gangster ManyaSurve, John Abraham says “The first day I met Sanjay Gupta (director) he had a newspaper article in his hand which was about a Bombay gangster called ManyaSurve.I read the article, looked at Sanjay and told him, this is a film we shoulddefinitely make. I did loads of research as it’s important to have the right look and right performance graph in this film. These roles don’t happen every day and I took it with utmost seriousness.”

Talking about the action and thriller sequence which is an integral scene in the movie and is shot in the midst of a dhobi ghat, Anil Kapoor recollects, “It was a very gripping and an extremely exciting sequence. The floor was very slippery and I was wondering how I would do the scene where I have to run fast. I am very proud of that sequence. The entire film has been shot at many real locations and that’s the reason there is a sense of rawness, intensity and drama.”

John Abraham also recollects the accidentwhich took place on the first day of shoot, “One of the guys I was fighting in the scene hit his head on my nose and it was bleeding like a tap on the first day of the shoot. The shot is still in the film, and if you notice carefully my nose is swollen to twice its size. It was very painful. I guess accidents are important to make a film work and I think sometimes are lucky for a film. It’s happened to me practically in every film of mine which has worked.”

Watch this crime thriller with a punch of adrenaline rush in the World Television Premiere of Shootout at Wadalaon Friday, 18th October at 9PM and Sunday, 20th October at 1PM only on MAX.

The film has collected about Rs 230 million in its first weekend. The film‘s screening in East Punjab Circuit has been stalled since Sunday due to a protest by a certain section of the society because of some dialogue in the film they find objectionable.

Aashiqui2 has gone on to become a hit all over. The film has gone down well with the youth at multiplexes. • Release of Shootout at Wadala pushed till 1 May, 2013

Release of Shootout at Wadala pushed till 1 May, 2013

MUMBAI: The release of Ekta Kapoor‘s Shootout at Wadala has been postponed for 1 May next year.

This is the second time that release of the film, co-produced and directed by Sanjay Gupta, has been postponed. Earlier, it was scheduled to release on 7 December this year but it was pushed to 25 January, 2013 to avoid a clash with Aamir Khan‘s Talaash, that is scheduled to release on November 30.

Looking at the release of the Anil Kapoor and John Abraham-starrer Race 2 early January, the film‘s release has been pushed further to May, it is understood.

“When I recently saw the rushes of the film I was blown away. It was so engaging and a powerful film. With its content and massive star cast, topped by the marketing push that Balaji team will give…we needed a five-day long weekend for Shootout at Wadala,” producer Ekta Kapoor said in a statement.

The makers are banking on the theme of the film which is based on the life of Maharashtrian labourer Manya Surve (played by John Abraham), who became involved in the first ever police encounter in the country.

Shootout at Wadala, which is a prequel to the 2007 hit film Shootout at Lokhandwala, stars John Abraham as gangster Manya Surve while Anil Kapoor plays the role of police officer named Issac Bagwan. It also stars Tusshar Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Manoj Bajpai, Ronit Roy, Kangana Ranuat and others.

  • Shootout at Wadala shifted to 2013 release

Shootout at Wadala shifted to 2013 release

MUMBAI: Fearing a clash with the Aamir Khan-starrer Talaash that could result in the inevitable, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has pushed the release of Shootout At Wadala (SAW) to next year. While Talaash is scheduled to release on 30 November, SAW was scheduled to release on 7 December.

“Our original release date was 7 December. Later Talaash was announced for 30 November release. So it‘s obvious that when an Aamir Khan full-fledged ainstream film releases after almost three years, distributors and exhibitors will block the theatres for at least two weeks,” Gupta said in support of his action.

On the other hand, pushing SAW’s release to next year also means that Gupta is also avoiding a clash with the Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg 2 that is to release on 24 December. Naturally, we had to look for a later date because Shootout… is also an equally big film. We are mature to understand that. Let‘s not eat into each other‘s business,” added Gupta.

A screen adaptation of Mumbai police‘s first registered gun battle, Shootout At Wadala stars John Abraham as gangster Manya Surve along with Anil Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Manoj Bajpayee, Tusshar Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut.

Mumbai police book Sanjay Gupta of cheating and forgery

MUMBAI: Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has been booked on charges of cheating and forgery by allegedly misusing the name of Mumbai Police Commissioner‘s Office in the invitation card sent for the press conference to announce the launch of his forthcoming film Shootout at Wadala that was held at the Mehboob Studios.

The invites sent by Gupta for the launch of Shootout at Wadala carried the rubber stamp of the Mumbai Police. The police chief would be present at the event and would also brief the media on the current status of crime in the city, the invitation read.

Shootout at Wadala is based on the first-ever registered encounter by Mumbai police who shot dead gangster Manya Surve at Wadala in 1990s.

“Sanjay Gupta, Balaji Motion Pictures (Producer) and Glamsham.com (Bollywood movie portal) were booked for cheating and forgery as they misused the name of the office of the Mumbai Police Commissioner by using the rubber stamp of police to promote their film,” senior inspector at Versova Police station has been reported to have said.
