    3D helps Warner Bros cross $1 bn in overseas markets

    MUMBAI: Setting a new studio record and marking the 12th straight year, Warner Bros. has surpassed $1 billion at the overseas box office in less than five months, the biggest contributor being Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, that amassed $257 million of its $357 million overseas haul in 2012.

    Also passing the $200 million mark this year were films like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Wrath of the Titans. The studio has made over $1 billion internationally 15 times, crossing the $2 billion mark four times.

    “Our success thus far this year would not be possible without the ingenuity of our filmmakers, and the hard work and dedication of our teams around the world,” said Warner Bros., president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vanderberg. “These remarkable results demonstrate the continued strength of the international business, particularly in rapidly expanding overseas markets and in 3D.”

    The studios’ 3D revenues have go far garnered $324 million, a third of the overall sum.

    In its release, Warner Bros. has also claimed that its international division has been the market leader six times in the last 11 years.

    MUMBAI: The $1 million The Devil Inside roped in $34.5 million clinced the No. 1 position, according to studio estimates. The collections helped propel the first full weekend of 2012 nearly 30 per cent ahead of the same weekend last year.

    The no-name horror film overtook big-name holdovers. About 19 per cent of audiences gave the film an F, according to survey firm CinemaScore.

    According to amalgam site Rottentomatoes.com, only 57 per cent of audiences said they enjoyed the movie, a low score considering that paying audiences rarely score a movie below 60 per cent. On the other hand, only 7 per cent critics gave the picture a thumbs-up.

    Devil supplanted Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol from its two-week perch at No. 1. The Tom Cruise sequel took second place with $20.5 million that lifted its total to $170.2 million.

    Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was third with $14.1 million, followed by David Fincher‘s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with $11.3 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked stayed on the top 5 with an intake of $9.5 million. The film has, till yet, done a business of $111.6 million.

    MUMBAI: The Tom Cruise-starrer Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol grossed an estimated $68.2 million.

    The fourth entry in the action franchise played in 6,079 sites in 36 markets. South Korea led a string of number one debuts on $11.1m from 948 venues over four days, followed by Japan on $9m from 343 over three and Russia on $6.1m from 680.

    Ghost Protocol scored the biggest launch in history on the UAE on $2.4mn from 27 sites. It launched on $5.2m in France from 616 and topped the charts in Australia on $4.2m from 240. The combined Middle Eastern total amounts to $3.5m for the biggest opening weekend for any film in the region.

    DreamWorks Animation‘s Puss In Boots took another giant stride towards the $200m mark as $30.4m through PPI from 6,054 sites propelled the running total to $188.2m. The film opened in Italy on $3.3m from 385, while Germany led holdover business with $4.9m from 693 for $13m.

    In the third weekend in France $3.7m from 1,049 pushed the tally to $19.4m. Puss In Boots stands at $12.2m in Brazil and has reached $10.3m in Mexico after three, $7.7m in Australia and $6.6m in the UK and an excellent $4.7m in Argentina, all after two.

    Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows launched in six markets through Warner Bros Pictures international and generated $14.7m from 2,113 screens. The UK led the way with a $5.8m number one debut from 1,040 followed by Italy on an outstanding $5m number one from 575.

    Fox International reported that Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked launched in 38 markets day-and-date with North America to bring in $14.5m from 3,815 screens. Only six of the markets were top 16 markets and these included $4m from the UK from 756 screens for number two and $1.6m from 1,022 in Mexico for number one. The Spanish debut delivered a $1.5m number two finish from 364.
