Shekhar Suman and Swati Shah back on TV in Sony SAB’s new show ‘Saath Phero Ki Hera Pherie’

High on the success of its last show, Sony SAB launches yet another hilarious offering!

Presenting ‘Saath Phero Ki Hera Pherie ‘- is a hilarious story of two married couples and their journey to understand if there is anything called as an happy marriage. The show brings back television megastar Shekhar Suman as the male lead and playing his wife is popular actress Swati Shah.

Bhupi Tandon played by veteran actor Shekhar Suman is a fifty year old man and has old-fashioned beliefs of a stereotyped Indian male. He is extremely chauvinistic, believes that the Man is the boss of the house and all wives should be dominated. In spite of this attitude, he is good hearted and cares for his family but fails to express his love. A travel agent by profession, Bhupi is a singer at heart. Though he is flamboyant Punjabi he believes in saving rather than spending.

On the other hand, his wife Neetu Tandon played by the versatile Swati Shah is a doting wife and mother. She thinks ‘pati ke charano mein hi patni ka swarg hota hai’. An excellent cook, she enjoys cooking and sharing it with her neighbours and keeps very bizarre ‘vrats’ all days of the week. She represents the typical Indian housewife of the 80’s who believes that her pati is her Parameshwar.

Speaking on this new beginning, Shekhar Suman said, “I am coming back to the genre of comedy after a long hiatus. However, I am very privileged to be working with such a great team and Sony SAB. I hope through Bhupi Tandon I can win the love and support of audiences all over India.”

Commenting about her role, Swati Shah said, “Playing Neetu is a fantastic experience. She is a woman with ritualistic beliefs but her innocence will definitely make all women identify with her. It is a great honor for me to be working alongside Shekhar ji in the show.”

  • Star Plus to attempt reclaiming the weekend prime time with ‘Mad In India’

Star Plus to attempt reclaiming the weekend prime time with ‘Mad In India’

MUMBAI: Entertainment! Entertainment! Entertainment! was the mantra of India’s leading general entertainment channel – Star Plus – while launching its much hyped show – Mad In India – starring Sunil Grover aka Gutthi…oops Chutki on Friday in Trombay, north-east Mumbai, where the show is being shot.

The buzz about the show began almost three months ago, right after actor-comedian Sunil Grover decided to part ways with Comedy Nights With Kapil on Colors which made his character Gutthi a household name. Now, it is finally ready to go on air from Sunday, 16 February at 9 pm.

Mad in India, which would play along one of the most fitting topics of the time – ‘aam aadmi’, will be divided into two segments – aam and khaas. To showcase both the segments in the best way, a grand rotating set has been designed by Omang Kumar – one front of which has a conversational area, while the other is a setup of a middle-class fictional locality – Bharatnagar – where Chutki, a flirty, social network addict resides with her parents and few neighbours. With the tagline, ‘100% desi show’, Mad in India alongside Sunil Grover would have Dolly Ahluwalia as Mango Dolly, Shweta Tiwari as Katrina Mishra, and other popular comedians like Khayali, Siddharth Jadhav, Rehman Khan, Rajbir Kaur and Paritosh Tripathi, while actor-anchor Manish Paul will play the host. Adding a little fun and music to the show would be singer Priya Patel.

“In the khaas segment, Manish will talk to the special guests of the week, while the aam segment would have comic acts around the aam aadmi but not satirical, rather entertaining,” says Star Plus non-fiction head Ashish Golwalkar, also adding that they don’t want the show to come across as preachy, rather with the aam-khaas concept shows the dichotomy that exists in our society, in our lives in the present times.

Rajeshwar Nair, the producer of the show (Keylight Productions), says they wanted to come up with a show that could capture the everyday issues of the common man. “As a production house, we have been at the forefront of highlighting issues with shows like Aap Ki KachehriIndia’s Got Talent, etc. This show will highlight the issues of the common man with funny take on what is happening in an aam country,” he remarks as he also says that it’s not satire but new-age comedy.

Once the basic idea was conceptualised, it was executed by creating a mohalla that has an English speaking coaching centre, a salon, marriage bureau, an all-in-one jugaadu guy, a struggler among other quirky characters clubbed with issues that matter. “From the idea to the execution, it took us almost five months,” says Nair, who thinks comedy is a tough task these days as there’s a lack of talent in the genre.

In fact, that is precisely why Star Network, which at one point of time was at the forefront of this genre with shows like The Great Indian Laughter ChallengeHans BaliyeChak De Fatte etc, took such a long time to come up with a comedy show. “Comedy was on our mind since a long time. But we didn’t want to come up with anything just for the sake of it. We waited to come up with something that we believe in,” says Star Plus SVP marketing and content strategy Nikhil Madhok, who also wanted to make Sundays entertaining for the viewers. “The show was conceptualised after we decided to extend our weekend programming till Saturday. While our fiction shows are more women-oriented, we wanted to make Sundays family oriented,” he adds.

There is big script-writing team working for the show. Rajiv Dhingra, who has more than 10 years of experience in comedy (few months even with Comedy Nights With Kapil), is heading the content team which has young writers from different spaces – few from theatre also. However, Nair believes that besides the strong content development team, the spontaneity of the artistes associated with the show who can crack a joke even when they don’t have a script, will work well for the show.

Dhingra says, “All the content that would be showcased is being developed thoughtfully. Our 10-member content team comprises a varied set of people from all across India, bringing in a pan-Indian flavour to the show.”

Another USP of the show, the makers believe is going to be its setup. “The realistic elements on the show will make it very convincing,” says Nair talking about the set that he assumes would be one of the most expensive sets of the present time.

However, the khaas or the conversational area where celebs like Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Baba Ramdev, Mika, Udit Narayan, etc are expected to come, has a striking similarity to the sets of the 90s show Movers & Shakers that was presented by Shekhar Suman. “To do a large scale entertainment show, there has to be a grammar with which the viewer relates. We are bringing freshness to the content but if we redefine everything, the viewer of the comedy genre will get very confused. Thus, we have tried to keep certain things, like the chat space, relatable to the audience,” says Nair.

Because of the earlier drama around the show, it is sure to draw comparisons with CNWK. However, the channel is assuring to create its own space. Unlike CNWKMad In India won’t have movie stars coming on the show for promotions regularly. It would have variety entertainment. Golwalkar mentions a concept like The Kumars at 42 while talking about the show, which in itself makes it clear that it is not trying to compete with any other show, rather is trying to create its own space. “There’s a place for everyone and everything to co-exist,” he remarks. “Also, as a GEC, it is important for us to delve into all the genres and that is why we have revived comedy. We are also coming up with a crime-thriller Ishq Kills at 10 pm and we would soon also revive the music genre,” says Golwalkar.

While the team believes that the appetite for comedy has increased in the recent time and the show is going to work just because of its differentiated content, even media planners are of the same view. “The best part is that the show would air at 9 pm while CNWK is telecast at 10 pm. The message sent across is that they are not competing but trying to add value to the genre that’s evolving by the day,” says a media planner.

The show has got three associate sponsors – Kit Kat from Nestle, protein shake Endura Mass and LIC. “The sales team is working to get three-four more sponsors by next week,” says Madhok, also professing that they aren’t looking for a title sponsor for the show in this season as they want the show to build its own brand.

But does that mean that the show would have a second season? “Since it is once a week, we haven’t really capped the number of episodes. Depending on the response that we get, we would decide if it would be a 13 episode or 26 episode season. We might give the writers a break to plan another season,” says Madhok.

The marketing strategies have been planned keeping in mind that the show comes across as differentiated and funny and thus only TV and digital have been kept as a medium where the characters can be showcased with jokes. “We have stayed away from print, OOH, radio where there’s a static image positioning it as ‘just another comedy show’. We are also not trying to show the concept to the audience as it would be too much info for the audience,” he says.

Considering that the show would air on the leading GEC, the media planners think it has all the reasons to be successful. Helios Media MD Divya Radhakrishnan says that there’s appetite for comedy as everybody wants a respite from the taxing lifestyle. “If the show is content-driven, there’s cent per cent chance for it to do really well.”

  • The seven season itch

    The seven season itch

The daggers are drawn and the battle field is set for what promises to be one of the most closely watched fights in recent television history.
We’re talking about the ensuing tussle between two of the small screen’s hottest properties: Sony Entertainment’s Kaun Banega Crorepati season seven vs. Colors’ Bigg Boss season seven.

While there really are no guesstimates as to which among these two shows will succeed in grabbing more eyeballs (… and TVTs), both Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) are more than ready for the kill.

Sony is betting big on the seventh season of KBC which comes to drawing rooms beginning 6 September, in a new and improved avatar. Not to be outdone, Colors is kick-starting Bigg Boss season seven – The ‘Wow’ and the ‘Aow’ barely nine days later i.e. 15 September.

We identify our strengths and weaknesses, and then see how we can complement our strengths with new shows, says confident Raj Nayak

Rechristened Saptakoti Mahadhani… Kaun Banega Mahacrorepati, KBC will be aired every Friday to Sunday at 8:30 pm. whereas Bigg Boss season seven will be telecast Monday to Sunday at 9:00 pm.
So what is the USP of this particular season, which the GECs are banking on?

KBC aims to create a platform of opportunities for Indians across ages, genders and socio-economic groups, and has had a makeover in terms of its format and prize money, which is now a whopping Rs 7 crore, among others.

Bigg Boss, on the other hand, arrives with a novel theme of heaven vs hell – The ‘Wow’ associated with the former and the ‘Aow’ with the latter.

A quick look at what’s new in both the shows:

KBC’s money tree will now comprise 15 questions and it will boast a brand new lifeline called ‘Power Paplu’ to aid those who seek to revive an already used lifeline. ‘Flip the question’ (Alat Palat) will replace ‘Ask the expert’ while ‘50:50’ will replace ‘Double Dip’.

In the entire game play, a hot seat contestant may now use only four of the five lifelines on offer.

A new feature ‘Play along’ has been introduced for the Fastest Finger First contestants who do not make it to the hot seat.

Well, competition is a reality. Within the very aggressive, competitive market, you have to differentiate the niche, says N.P Singh

Using ‘Play along’, they can play with the hot seat contestant and the one who answers the maximum number of questions in the minimum amount of time gets to win one lakh rupees at the end of the episode.

Additionally, the time limit for the ‘Phone a friend’ lifeline has been increased from 30 to 45 seconds. What’s more, audiences can win by playing the Ghar Baithe Jeeto Jackpot.
In contrast, Bigg Boss promises to be a roller-coaster ride for audiences, what with the heaven vs hell theme.

Of the 14 contestants, seven will be new names residing in a separate heaven themed house while the remaining seven will be old members, staying under one roof in another hell themed house, who’ve already been members of the Bigg Boss house during the last six seasons. The contestants from both the houses would be pitched against eachother in a series of tasks.

Among the newbies entering the Bigg Boss house are Shekhar Suman, Vatsal Seth, Suraj Pancholi, Kushal Tandon, Pratyusha Banerjee and Sonarika Bhadoria. The seventh newcomer is still to be identified.

Blast from the past: Hellcat Pooja Mishra is among the old members who will continue to occupy the house. Other members are still not confirmed.

There will be some amount of competition and fragmentation between the two shows, says Deepak Netram

Apart from programming frills, the channels themselves seem super confident about their respective properties. Moreso considering Bigg Boss has had a successful run last season with an opening of 4.0 TVR (television viewership ratings); ditto for KBC’s last season which opened with 6.1 TVR.

Colors CEO Raj Nayak says the channel is very clear and conscious in its strategy to be a complete household entertainment channel. “Today if you do a FPC (Fixed Point Chart) check across all channels, you will see Colors has the maximum variety. While strategy is one part, everything we do involves risks. But when I say risks, we take calculated risks. We identify our strengths and weaknesses, and then see how we can complement our strengths with new shows. If we succeed, they become better. If not, we keep trying,” he exults.

Asked if Sony has any particular strategy to beat the competition, SET chief operating officer N.P Singh says, “Well, competition is a reality. Within the very aggressive, competitive market, you have to differentiate the niche. Sony in its last 17 years has always run shows which are different from the rest and that has set us apart and we continue to follow that strategy.”

Since it is the seventh season, both shows have a great following and it will be very hard to choose one, says Ashish Bhasin

While Lodestar UM vice president Deepak Netram agrees there will be some amount of competition and fragmentation between the two shows, he is quick to point out that they cannot be compared. “They are unique in their own way. From the past what we have seen is KBC ratings have been there year on year. So we hope to maintain that. Bigg Boss on the other hand is looking bigger; the promotions are really huge and have happened way in advance. So it will be interesting to see how this pans out,” he observes.

Aegis Group plc chairman India and CEO southeast Asia Ashish Bhasin echoes Netram’s sentiments saying it will be a tough call between two very established properties. “Since it is the seventh season, both shows have a great following and it will be very hard to choose one. What viewers always believe in is content. If the content is of the viewers’ interest, people will definitely opt for that. The main competition will be when something else comes at that time – say a big movie is being launched by another channel or any big news event – which show loses out in that instance is going to be more interesting to watch,” he opines.

peaking from the point of view of advertisers, Bhasin says this particular slot is becoming increasingly attractive to them as it is also the hub of reality shows. “Advertisers will go where the eyeballs are and choose the most cost-effective way to get them. That’s how pricing will be done. And that can vary depending upon what the market rates are for that channel around that point of time. I don’t think finding advertisers for any of these shows will be an issue,” he says.

On his part, Nayak maintains Colors’ non-fiction shows generate more traction from advertisers than its fictional shows and Bigg Boss gets some of the biggest brands. However, he adds that it works as a loss leader and the channel has been investing in it because it is a cult show. This apart, it generates a lot of buzz. Estimates are that it is in the region of Rs 15-20 crore.
Most advertisers across categories agree that since both KBC and Bigg Boss are big properties and have local audiences across age groups, they cannot afford to ignore any one of them.

“Who would not want to take advantage of these shows to reach out to their target group? People are waiting for the shows to start and with festivals coming up; no one would be a fool to favour one over the other. Maximum eyeballs give us maximum reach,” says an advertiser who didn’t wish to be named.

As things stand, both the shows have gone viral on various digital platforms. Bigg Boss seven’s official Facebook page boasts around 1.8 million likes and more than 30,000 people talking about it. KBC Seven is not far behind with 1.6 million likes. Both are popular on Facebook but don’t seem to be trending that much on twitter.

Whether Big B’s charisma will work or Salman Khan’s swagger, only time will tell…

  • ABP News presents the 1st television show on comedians of the film industry

ABP News presents the 1st television show on comedians of the film industry

The series ‘Mera Naam Joker’ on ABP News is about the unsung Heroes of Hindi Cinema-the Comedians. This series is a tribute to all those comic artists who brought laughter into the lives of their millions of fans, but never got their rightful place in the Indian cinema.
Their fascinating story will be narrated by the inimitable television host & actor Shekhar Suman. Shekhar, who has previously hosted very successful shows like Poll Khol and Movers & Shakers, is coming back on television with Mera Naam Joker.Talking about the show, Shekhar says, ‘Normally the film-based shows talk only about the reigning stars of cinema. But the premise of this show is different and very fascinating. Here we are talking about the brilliant comedy actors of Hindi cinema. Some of the comedy actors were outstanding and commanded their own fan following. But somehow they were lost in glamour and glitter of the film industry. There are so many stories related to them that will be shown in the show.”
So many popular comic actors of Hindi cinema created magic and laughter with their brilliant comic timing, distinct style and sparkling sense of humor. The people who brought laughter on the faces of millions of fans through their on-screen antics, have some very interesting off-screen stories to tell. This is a series celebrating the life and times of the famous comic actors.

The show also explains how some comic actors riding on their sheer talent had become bigger than many lead actors of their times. Some of them even allege that the big stars conspired against them. This series will demonstrate a different facet of cinema that is entertaining as well as informative.
It is ironical that all the big stars of Hindi cinema are scared of being labeled as good comedy actors because in Hindi cinema, good acting is always synonymous with serious ‘intense’ roles. These are the roles for which they get best actor awards.Though all the stars agree that comedy roles are difficult to perform as compared to the so-called ‘intense’ roles. Yet they are terrified of being typecast as comedians. In Hindi Cinema, Comedy and Comedians generally do not get their rightful respect.
The series will talk about the ace comedians of the hindi cinema. There have been many artistes- Johny Walker, Mehmood, Jagdeep, to Rajendra Nath, Asrani and Johny Lever. Each with a distinct comic style and a very interesting story about how they became an on-screen Joker. What was so special about their styles of comedy?
The series is hosted by popular television host Shekhar Suman. He is a part of the film industry since last three decades. He has personally known many comic actors of Hindi cinema and has some very interesting anecdotes to tell the audience. He says, “This is an important show in the history of film journalism. The research team of ABP News has worked very hard in bringing some interesting and unheard facts about these comedy actors. Do you know Asrani’s mannerisms in Sholay were inspired by Hitler? Why did many super stars refused to work with Comedian Mehmood? There are many such interesting anecdotes in the show. I can say that the series Mera Naam Joker will be loved by the audience.”
The USP of the series is its meticulous research by the team of ABP News. The production values are grand of this in-house production of ABP News. Mera Naam Joker will make you laugh and make you think as well.
