    Nimbus floats Nirvana Television

MUMBAI: Nimbus Communications has announced the formation of a new subsidiary, Nirvana Television, which will produce ‘top quality television software that is bold, cutting edge and consumer focussed’.

Nirvana Television will be a one-stop shop for all creative ideas and individual talent, catering specifically to broadcaster-funded programming on cable and satellite channels, according to an official release. Nimbus Television, the existing software producing arm of Nimbus Communications, will continue to cater to advertiser-funded programming.

Nirvana Television will be headed by creative director Ajay Kapoor, who has to his credit shows like Jeeto Chappar Phad Ke, television events like Femina Miss India and awards shows like Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Awards. Some of the other shows conceived by him include Super 7 Muqabla, MTV’s Cricket in Control and Kuch Kehti Hai Yeh Dhun, which is currently on air on Sony.

Says Kapoor, “We want to focus on innovative and radical programming catering to Indian and international audiences. Our focus will be large scale and we intend to work with big name and top class talent, some of whom are already in the process of being signed on.”

Kapoor has been a producer/director on a number of live broadcasts of cricket events which include the Cricket World Cup 1999, Sharjah Cup 2000 and 2001, the Coca Cola Series – Sri Lanka 2001, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2002. In the field of sports, he pioneered the broadcast of Indian Horse Racing and Golf on satellite television, the release says.

  • Ten Sports Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup contest kicks off

MUMBAI: Are you missing the pulsating excitement of cricket already? Well there’s no reason to fret as the next mega cricket tournament – the Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup, is just round the corner. So, for those who missed their flight to South Africa for the World Cup, can now get ready to take off to Sharjah for the Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup by participating in the contest on indiantelevision.com. You need to answer four simple questions correctly and wait for lady luck to do the rest. The contest is open till 3 April.
Sharjah, the Mecca of cricket, will witness some of the finest cricket this year when four nations -Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Pakistan battle it out to take the prestigious ‘Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup’ home. The tournament begins on 3 April with Zimbabwe taking on Pakistan, the defending champions. This will be followed by Pakistan playing against Sri Lanka on 4 April. The finals will be played on 10 April 2003. The tournament will be telecast live, exclusively on Ten Sports.

The history of development of Sharjah as a cricketing venue for the organisers of the only Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) has been of a fairy tale “too-good-to-be-true” nature. The CBFS was established in 1981 under the aegis of Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, whose main aim was to honour cricketers of the past and present generation from India and Pakistan with benefit purses in recognition of their meritorious services to the game. Subsequently over the years, the geographical boundaries of this concept were enlarged, and since then the benefits have also been extended to players from Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
The Sharjah stadium, which initially started with a few limited seats and very modest facilities, now boasts of a 27,000 capacity including VIP boxes with a television, refrigerator and worldwide telephone facilities. CBFS held its 50th One-day International during 1990 and now leads Melbourne and Sydney amongst the top three principal playing centres of one-day cricket in the world.
Well, you could be the one to find out why cricket pundits believe that the Sharjah Cricket stadium has its own charisma and magic. A last ball six, a last over hat trick and several nail-biting finishes have become a feature of Sharjah Cricket. Cricket fans flock from the world over to witness true sportsmanship and experience the thrill of the game.

  • Kenya will fill SA shoes at Sharjah Cup

MUMBAI: The Sharjah Cup will take place at the original venue notwithstanding the Iraq Conflict. South Africa, one of the teams originally scheduled to participate in the triangular, has pulled out citing security concerns. Surprise World Cup semi finalist Kenya will replace them.
This year’s Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup from 3-10 April takes place under the stadium’s lights. Pakistan’s new captain is Rashid Latif . They also have a new coach in Javed Miandad who must be hoping that the team finds some of the form it showed in 1999 when it finished runner up at the World Cup edition in England.
Readers will recall that at this month’s World Cup in South Africa, Kenya defeated two of the other teams who will participate at Sharjah, namely Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Pakistan is in a bit of a mess right now with Akram, Akhtar and company having been given the boot. Therefore, this is another golden opportunity for Steve Tikolo’s minnows to cement their position in international one day cricket.
Sri Lanka reached the semi finals of the World Cup and have retained captain Sanath Jayasuriya to lead their team and defend their trophy after last year’s victory over Pakistan.
Presented by former Indian star Sanjay Manjrekar, the commentary team will steer us through 10 hours a day of live coverage from the stadium.

The programme lineup is as follows

    Date Match
    3 April Pakistan vs Zimbabwe
4 April Pakistan vs Sri Lanka
    5 April Zimbabwe vs Kenya
6 April Sri Lanka vs Kenya
7 April Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe
    8 April Pakistan vs Kenya
    10 April Final
