    Mumbai film festival announces lineup

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival, a Reliance entertainment initiative, has announced the lineup of about 200 films that would be screened under various sections films.

    Scheduled to be held from 13 to 20 October, the 13th Mumbai Film Festival aims to showcase the truly global cinema. While Cinemax Versova would be the main hub of the festival, screenings would be held at Metro Big Cinemas and Cinemax Sion.

    While the Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball will be the opening film of the festival, the Morgan Freeman starrer Dolphin Tale will close the festival. Among the films that will have their India premieres would be Melancholia directed by Lars Von Tier, The Whistle Blower, George Clooney‘s The Ides of March and Wim Wenders-directed Pina.

    Announcing the lineup of films, Benegal said: “A feast of films awaits you at the 13th Mumbai Film Festival. We are extremely proud of the fact that Mumbai Film Festival is fast getting recognised to be the best international film festival in this country.”

    Other films will compete for $200,000 under the three competition sections – ‘International Competition for the first feature films of directors‘; ‘Dimensions Mumbai‘; and ‘Harmony Celebrate Age‘.

    Averred Mumbai film festival director Srinivasan Naryanan, “This year the selection committee had its task cut out for them. They had to choose from over 800 films to finally zero down on such a closely competitive lineup.”

    The festival will pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor, M.F.Hussain and Mani Kaul with special screenings of their works. Additionally, a film retrospective of Jury President, Hugh Hudson‘s works including Revolution Revisited and I Dreamed of Africa would be screened.

    Noted poet, lyricist, script writer and director, Gulzar will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

    MUMBAI: The South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) got going in Goa yesterday with the screening of the Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore-starrer Kashmir ki Kali, screened as a special tribute to the late star.


    The festival was declared open by Goa chief minister Digambar Kamat in the presence of Randhir Kapoor and Rajeev Kapoor, the scions of Kapoor family among representatives of South Asian Countries who were present at the ceremony.


    Randhir Kapoor was felicitated by the state chief secretary Sanjay Srivastava in honour of the contribution of the Kapoor family to Indian Cinema. “Cinema knows no boundaries. Its just an emotion that we create. We should have lot of cultural exchange amongst the south Asian nations,” said Kapoor responding to the felicitation.


    The festival‘s theme is ‘Dissolving Boundaries‘ – spreading the message of togetherness and oneness amongst the South Asian Countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.


    Bhutan is the focus country for SAFF 2011. The annual festival will also pay tribute to Bangladeshi film maker Tareque Masud who was one of the two prime witnesses of the International War Crime Tribunal. Incidentally, Tareque was killed in a fatal bus accident near Dhaka on 26 August.

    MUMBAI: The sixth edition of the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) will pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor and Bangladeshi filmmaker Tareque Masud, the former for his contribution to Indian cinema and the latter who was one of the two prime witnesses of the International War Crime Tribunal.

    Organised by the South Asia Foundation (SAF), the theme of the four-day long festival is ‘Dissolving Boundaries‘ that spreads the message of togetherness and oneness amongst the countries in the subcontinent including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

    As a special gesture to Shammi Kapoor, his film Kashmir Ki Kali would be screened in the presence of Sharmila Tagore.

    Besides, more than 50 films from the eight participating South Asian countries will be screened during the festival.

    The SAFF is scheduled to begin in Goa from 15 September.

    Madhu Mantena mulls animation film on Shammi Kapoor

    MUMBAI: In his intention to pay a tribute to the late Shammi Kapoor, producer Madhu Mantena wants to carry forward the actor’s legacy in an animation film.

    Mantena wants to shoot Kapoor’s musical heritage in the animation format. He plans to get the finest graphic designers to work on the special effects. Technicians from Los Angeles are being roped in to make this the "most comprehensive" tribute ever.

    Reportedly, Mantena wants to incorporate 26 of the actor’s most popular numbers into the film. It is said that Mantena doesn’t want remixed versions of Kapoor’s tunes and insists on the original Mohammed Rafi numbers.

    The producer is in talks with Saregama to negotiate an agreement for the rights of Kapoor’s evergreen classics. Acquiring rights of the actor’s songs would not be difficult since Mantena was closely associated with Saregama for many years.

    Art director Samir Chanda no more

    MUMBAI: This week, Bollywood has been plagued with deaths. First, it was Shammi Kapoor; then it was the death of yesteryear art director Shanti Das. Now come the news that the country’s topmost art director Samir Chanda has passed away. He was 54.


    In his 32-year career, Chanda had annexed the National Film Award for best Art Direction thrice. Among the notable films that Chanda was associated with were Kharij, Aks, Raavan, Bose The Forgotten Hero, Guru, Rang De Basanti, Kaalpurush, Krishna, Omkara, Saat Khoon Maaf and Yatra among others.


    Chanda had also worked in Bengali films like Kaalbela, Kalpurush and Moner Manush besides directing Mithun Chakraborty in Ek Nadir Galpo (Tale of a River).


    Starting with TV serials, Chanda gained popularity in filmdom with him being close to filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Vishal Bharadwaj and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.


    A trained painter from Calcutta Art College, Chanda‘s vast training and understanding of Indian art and architecture ranged from the recreation of sets from the 10th Century to the modern contemporary world.

    SAFF to honour Shammi Kapoor with tribute

    MUMBAI: The South Asia Film Festival (SAFF) that opens in Goa on 15 September will honour Shammi Kapoor by way of a tribute, the organisers have said in a statement.


    “As a tribute to the legendary actor Shammi Kapoor, a special screening of his film Brahmachari would be showcased during the festival,” South Asia Foundation (SAF) secretary general Rahul Barua said.


    Apart from the 1968 film, Kapoor‘s 1964 film Kashmir Ki Kali, starring Sharmila Tagore, will also be screened at the festival.


    This year the festival has etched out a special segment on films from Bhutan. “In its 6th year, the festival promises a rich haul of more than 50 films from all the eight South Asian countries. Bhutan is the focus country of SAFF-2011. A delegation from the Bhutanese film industry and members of the Motion Pictures Association of Bhutan (MPAB) will represent its industry.”


    Veteran film personalities like Subhash Ghai, Randhir Kapoor, MaheshBhatt and Sharmila Tagore would conduct workshops on various aspects of filmmaking like scriptwriting and direction.


    The SAFF works towards policy advocacy and promoting peace and harmony with an objective of strengthening socio-cultural relationship among the South Asian countries.
