TED Talks gets three more seasons

MUMBAI: Star India has renewed TED Talks India: Nayi Soch (TED Talks), a TV as well as digital series hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, for three more seasons. The inaugural edition of the show, which had premiered in December 2017, had reached 96 million viewers in the first season.

The first season featured speakers delivering inspiring and informative talks in TED’s signature style of 18 minutes or less. TED Talks speakers deliver TED Talks in Hindi on topics as varied as science and social justice before a live studio audience, with subtitles in Hindi and English. Nearly every talk features a short Q&A between the speaker and Khan that dives deeper into the ideas shared onstage.

Star TV CEO and chairman Uday Shankar said, “Star TV is committed to developing programming that goes beyond pure entertainment to inspire and educate our massive audience. Both the critical response and the tremendous viewer love for this series were key factors in our decision to bring Ted Talks back for at least three more seasons.”

TED head of television Juliet Blake, who executive produced the series, said, “We’re incredibly proud of this show’s accomplishments breaking barriers to reach new audiences, and look forward to spending the next several seasons inspiring a nation to embrace ideas and curiosity.”

TED Talks’ audience stretches beyond television on TED.com/india and for TED mobile app users in India.

TED head Chris Anderson said, “Ultimately TED’s goal is to develop compelling new content formats that can make ideas available and relevant to billions of people we haven’t reached yet. This journey with Star TV and Shah Rukh Khan has been one of the most exciting steps toward the goal. We love this partnership and can’t wait to get working on these new series.”

  • Are celebs killing their brand by endorsing too many products?

Are celebs killing their brand by endorsing too many products?

MUMBAI: How often do we come across an ad that features a Bollywood celebrity? Maybe, a lot, and it is mostly driven by people’s affinity for seeing their favourite celebrity on television, outside of movies.

The brand value added by a celebrity to the product is immediate and palpable. When a celebrity signs an endorsement deal with a company, an element of legitimacy is suddenly attached to the product simply because of the power of the name backing it up. Even though viewers enjoy watching their favourite celebs on screen advertising products, more often than not, the message becomes a little too much about the celebrity rather than the product itself.

Today, there are numerous celebrities endorsing multiple brands. Two such popular celebrities are Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who endorse multiple brands across a range of categories from fashion, food and beverage, consumer products and others.

    public://AMITABH-BACCHAN-COLLAGE.jpg

Does a celebrity’s association with several brands reduce his brand equity? It is quite likely that their endorsements may not resonate as well when the same face woos them with the goodness of everything–from biscuits to oil to a direct-to-home connection to chocolates. The case is similar is for female celebrities. Deepika Padukone promotes Coca-Cola, L’Oreal, Venus and Axis Bank while Katrina Kaif backs Mango Slice, Veet, Pantene and Lux.

But the question here is whether these celebrities actually consume or use the products that they endorse. Highly unlikely is the quick answer.

Although the Advertising Standards Council (ASCI) has laid down guidelines for celebrity endorsements, not much seems to be followed in the industry. The ASCI’s guideline for celebrity endorsement states:

    a) Testimonials, endorsements or representations of opinions or preference of Celebrities must reflect genuine, reasonably current opinion of the individual(s) making such representations, and must be based upon adequate information about or experience with the product or service being advertised.

    b) Celebrity should do due diligence to ensure that all description, claims and comparisons made in the advertisements they appear in or endorse are capable of being objectively ascertained and capable of substantiation and should not mislead or appear deceptive.

Celebrities that do not abide by these guidelines have to pay a fine of Rs. 20 lakh or more according to the current limit for appearing in a single advertisement or a campaign or per year, whichever is more.

    public://SHAHRUKH-KHAN-COLLAGE.jpg

But the celebrity ad world isn’t entirely about the money after all and not every celebrity wants the limelight all the time. Some are picky about the brands they associate themselves with. Cricketer Virat Kohli and Bollywood actor Aamir Khan are paragons for this endorsement phylosophy.

According to a recent report by corporate advisers Duff & Phelps, Kohli is India’s most valuable brand surpassing even Shah Rukh Khan who held the title since 2014. While the early glamour may have pushed Kohli to advocate Pepsi and Fair & Lovely Men, he eventually decided to move away from these brands. He was signed up as the brand ambassador for Pepsi in 2011 but refused to renew the contract, which ended in April 2017, saying at the time that he would not ask people to consume something that he himself does not. Kohli said, “The things that I’ve endorsed in the past—I won’t take names—but I feel that I don’t connect to [the brands] anymore. If I myself won’t consume such things, I won’t urge others to consume it just because I’m getting money out of it.”

Many saw his move as a sign of a man who believes in himself and someone who has invested his mind, heart and body in his role as a leader in society. “I want to give something to people that I use myself. One of the reasons I decided not to sign Pepsi is that I have undergone a lifestyle change. It might have been big money for me and a very lucrative deal but I opted out as we need to have some thought behind the products we promote and we must understand that people trust us,” he added. He no longer endorses fairness creams or products of that genre since equating success with skin fairness goes against his values.

It is no coincidence that the number of celebrity endorsements has gone up in recent years. A 2015 study by Nielsen found that famous faces work best on millennials and gen Z– the two generations most likely to spend the most compared to their predecessors and with aims of having a topnotch lifestyle.

In 2014, Bachchan had also cut off ties with Pepsi after 16 long years of commitment, when a young girl asked him why he promoted a product her teacher branded as ‘poison’. Bachchan, having realised the impact on the minds of people, even urged his son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to be careful about their ties.

Studies have shown that consumers have better brand recall of products backed by celebrities. Celebrity backing adds awareness, trust and familiarity–important objectives for marketers to achieve. People believe that by using products their favourite celebrities endorse, they will be able to emulate their lifestyle.

Similarly, Aamir Khan has been known to be picky about which products he wants to endorse. Although the actor was associated with Coca-Cola, Godrej, Titan Watches, Tata Sky, Toyota Innova, Samsung, Monaco Biscuits in the past, he decided to move away from products that he does not believe in and does not consume himself.

The actor witnesses backlash after his intolerance comment in 2016 and the uproar impacted his endorsed brand Snapdeal that bore the brunt with more than 7 lakh customers uninstalling the app. Soon after the incident, Khan was removed as the India brand ambassador for Incredible India and was replaced by Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra. The actor did not have any endorsements for nearly two years as brands did not want to associate themselves with negative publicity.

The actor was recently announced as the India and Pakistan brand ambassador for Chinese handset maker Vivo, which many see as his big come back. Brands of Desire CEO Saurabh Uboweja believes that Khan, as a brand, doesn’t need comebacks to make his point. “He is a brand in every way and on the contrary, it is a big opportunity for Vivo to establish itself as a mainstream brand,” he says.

While the over exposure does harm the brand equity of celebrities in the long term, being selective with endorsements is beneficial to the star as well as the brands.

  • Eros International Plc reports massive bottomline gains for third quarter

BENGALURU: Eros International Plc (Eros) reported more than a 15 fold (15.4  fold) increase in operating profits for the quarter ended 31 December 2016 (Q3-17, current quarter) as compared to corresponding year ago quarter. Operating profit in the current quarter was $8.2 million as compared to just $0.5 million in Q3-16. The company reported Net Income of $11.5 million as compared to a loss of $2.5 million in the corresponding year ago quarter.

The company’s topline (revenues) however declined 5.3 percent year-over-year to $57.3 million in the current quarter from $60.5 million. Adjusted EBITDA in Q3-17 increased by 62.9 percent to $14.5 million, compared to $8.9 million in the prior year period.

Eros explains that the strong increase in margins and profitability vis-à-vis the slight decline in revenues was due to the negative impact of demonetisation on theatrical revenues in the third quarter partially offset by strong high-margin catalogue sales.

    Company speak

Eros managing director and group CEO Jyoti Deshpande said, “I am very proud of the progress we have made over the past few months on our journey to transform our Company into a leading global digital distribution business supported by the power of our brand, premium content and unparalleled distribution capabilities. The momentum we highlighted in November continues to accelerate with the growing success of Eros Now, our OTT platform which reached 58 million registered users and crossed 2 million paying subscribers in December 2016.

As we discussed in our Q2 results last November, the rapidly evolving digital media landscape in India including increased competition from Western OTT players for digital rights has underscored the value of digital content in India. It also reinforces our overall strategy to focus on premium content with the widest possible appeal. In the long term the rising value of digital rights will make our existing content library more valuable and increase the demand for our new release digital content across all platforms – including satellite and cable.

The demonetisation efforts undertaken by the Indian Government in November have clearly had a short-term impact on many aspects of the Indian economy, especially consumer discretionary spending. To that end while the entire media sector in India has been temporarily impacted by these measures, we feel that the underlying push to digitisation will directly and indirectly benefit our company going forward in many ways. We have been working tirelessly to provide consumers with multiple payment options for Eros Now, from telco billing to digital wallets to mobile payment providers. The push to digitisation reinforces our strategy and we feel we are well positioned to capitalize on this opportunity.

Finally, our strong upcoming production slate of over 50 films has gone through a stringent green-lighting process for several months. The upcoming lineup includes highly promising projects including five films from Trinity, two Indo‐China co‐productions, a Shah Rukh Khan film from Color Yellow, two sequels from our own content stable like Vicky Donor-2, Badlapur-2, Munna Michael starring Tiger Shroff and Chanda Mama Door Ke starring Sushant Singh, amongst others.”

    ErosNow

The company says that Eros International’s OTT Platform ErosNow has over 20 lakh (2 million) subscribers worldwide, it has 5.8 crore (58 million) registered users worldwide across WAPP, APP and the web. The platform has rights to over 5,000 films, 250,000 audio tracks with 13 music labels providing music content.

The company says that Eros Now has integration deals around the world with over 20 different telecom operators and nine different OEMs and connected devices. Further, over the past four months Eros Now has digitally premiered more than 15 films from the Eros International new release slate. Eros Now’s original content offering began with the release of ‘Salute Siachen’, India’s first ever celebrity high endurance expedition to the Siachen Glacier. In addition, Eros Now originals such as Flesh by Siddharth Anand, Smoke and Side Hero will be launched in FY-18.

New DHFL ad tackles right time to take home loans

NEW DELHI: A new ad campaign “Home Loan Dilse” featuring brand ambassadior Shahrukh Khan which is an extension of the earlier Ghar Jaisa Loan Campaign has been launched by the Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL).

This is the third ad campaign featuring Khan to increase awareness and reverse the dilemma among the LMI segment in India with regards to the decision to have their own home.

The “Home Loan Dilse” campaign tackles a very pertinent question – what’s the right time to buy a home or avail of a home loan? The campaign communicates relatable instances from various stages in people’s lives and affirms that the right time to buy a house is when you dream of a home. Right from getting married or after you have a child, from the desire to get rid of a nagging land lord to the need for more space to accommodate a growing family, the customer’s needs / reasons for buying a home are never-ending. The campaign messaging is appealing and connects with the real life common man dilemmas and affirms them that the right time is now, thereby strengthening the borrower’s trust and confidence in DHFL.

DHFL Sr. VP & Head Marketing Sevantika Bhandari said, “We are extremely pleased to roll out this campaign which focuses on building a conviction among the LMI segment with regards to owning a home. We at DHFL help our customers transition their dreams of owning a home into a reality. Our first campaign “Ghar Jaisa Loan” was about dreaming of owning a own home, our 2nd campaign was saying no to excuses and telling the customer that the right time to own your dream home is now, and the current campaign tells us that there is no perfect time; the time is now and when you feel like it, just take that first step and own your own home.”

She added, “The association with Shah Rukh Khan has further reinforced our connect with the target segment. Shah Rukh in all DHFL campaigns comes across like a friend, philosopher, advisor and an elder brother talking to customers and urging them to take their first step towards home ownership.”

Khan said “The ad campaign has been executed in a manner that is simple yet appealing. There are so many instances when customers do not have the adequate recourses to purchase their own home, it is then that housing finance companies like DHFL help these customers achieve that dream. I am confident that the new campaign “Home Loan Dilse?” will appeal to the rationale of the customers and encourage them to take a decision to own a home thereby complementing the vision of DHFL to transform the lives of Indian households by enabling access to home ownership”

SapientNitro Chief Creative Officer K V Sridhar (Pops) said, “The new ad campaign has been brilliantly written, acted and directed to address the dilemma faced by a consumer with regards to identifying the right time to purchase his/her own home. The campaign further complements the previous campaigns launched by the company in the last two years. Shah Rukh Khan has immensely contributed in transforming the brand by creating further awareness and making it relatable to the common man who looks to partner or avail a home loan from a company he/she can trust.”

Director Nitesh Tiwari added, “I have been associated with DHFL from the launch of the Ghar Jaisa Loan Campaign. DHFL understands the customer and has captured the emotional moments in the life of people when they actually consider buying a house. Shah Rukh Khan is portrayed as an approachable and friendly person in this campaign. We have conceptualized the campaign with great detail basis the indepth insights gathered from the brand over the years. Taking this route has worked for the campaign as people can relate to him as a friend and as an advisor for helping them take the home buying decision.”

TVF to launch Barely Speaking with Arnub

MUMBAI: After creating quite a buzz during its last season two years ago and reviving the talk show culture in India, TVF is all set to launch Season 2 of the most watched online talk show in India – TVF’s innovative, popular, iconic talk show – Barely Speaking with Arnub – later this month.

Created as a parody to a TV talk show, the first season of Barely Speaking with Arnubfeatured leading actors and political icons – from Shahrukh Khan, Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra to the current New Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.

The popular online show was built on the same ideology and premise on which TVF was initially created, which was to deliver great and awesome content for its audiences.TVF entered the niche market of online talk shows in 2014 with Barely Speaking with Arnub. The talk show became an instant hit with audiences not just in India, but across the world, with each episode clocking over 2 million views!

In the growing age of digital media where branded online content has taken off in a big way, the silver screen has realised the importance of the web. Barely Speaking with Arnub provides a innovative platform not just to films and filmmakers for their pre-release promotions, but, also to celebrities to showcase their human, more natural side to their fans, not just in India, but across the world!

Arunabh Kumar, CEO and Founder of TVF says, “TV Channels have tried a lot of talks shows and the new millennium has seen several established actors trying their hand at hosting one. This led to all of the talk shows being more or less similar in India. From radio to television to print media, every domain has been tried and tested by celebrities to connect to their audiences, but no medium connects them better than digital. When we wanted to create an online talk show, we knew that no amount of marketing or promotions would help if we don’t create a talk show with a difference. And that’s when we decided to turn the talk show format on its head and conceive it as the ‘toughest host a guest will ever get!’

In the growing age of digital media, where online content is spreading like wildfire, every popular celebrity has recognised the importance and power of the web. Stars and celebrities want to connect to young viewers and that’s where we have managed to hit the nail with the TVF Brand which everyone loves and deliver a talk show that stands out. And more so, it helps them stand up for something they believe in with a smile. TVF created ‘Barely Speaking with Arnub’ catering to the digital audiences’ taste and helping humanise some of the country’s biggest celebrities. In the scores of interviews that SRK gives for his movie promotions, what audiences remember is ‘Barely Speaking With Arnub’. It is also the most watched online talk show in India. TVF also created history in India by getting a politician on the show and talk to us as one of us. With the 2nd Season of Barely Speaking, we want to help get more celebrities from across the field connect to new age Indians and share what they believe in. And of course the host – Arnub with a U — ensures to keep the viewers and guests smiling!.”

Biswapati Sarkar, Executive Creative Director, TVF added, “The funny thing about the show is not that we are making fun of celebrities or that we are parodying the existing Indian journalism culture. It is the fact there is a show at all and real life celebrities are appearing in it. This season, we have expanded the Arnub universe featuring new storylines and characters in his life apart from the interviews. I’m having a great time right now working with the writers on the episodes and really excited to play Arnub once again.”
