Rajeev Masand, Entertainment Editor, CNN-IBN, will be discussing Shah Rukh’s journey from an unknown face to a face that stands out in the crowd. He paved the path of his career as an actor on the small screen with Fauji and Circus. From the psychopath lover in Darr to the happy go lucky guy next door in Kal Ho Na Ho; Shah Rukh has done it all. His success story sets a benchmark for the youth all over the country.

Get to know more about the King Khan and his new film by the megastar himself in a candid conversation exclusively on CNN-IBN at 9:30 pm this Saturday, August 5 & Sunday, August 6 at 12:30 pm (Replay).

    Excerpts from the Interview:

Rajeev Masand: Now, one of your co-stars in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is Amitabh Bachchan, with whom you’ve done three films prior to this one. Of course you’ve heard the story of a cold war between the two of you.

And there’s also a story about you not being part of the Yash Raj banner anymore because of the cold war between you and the Bachchans. What’s your take on that?

Shah Rukh Khan: We hate each other and right now we are planning through assassins to kill each other and I’ve even decided to take on Mr Yash Chopra and destroy all the films and the negatives that he has done.

That is what it is at. And my assassins are all over Mumbai outside Mr Bachchan’s house, attempting to take over his house and his films.

Rajeev Masand: We assume that you are amused by these stories.

Shah Rukh Khan: I was amused earlier, I was never irritated, I was never disturbed. Now, I’m not even amused, I mean it’s an old and boring story. It’s just not there.

I think newspapers and channels should just freshen up some scandalous stories like me having an affair with Abhishek Bachchan would be more interesting

Rajeev Masand: What was the attraction for Don? I mean to star in a film that was part of your childhood? The one that you grew up with?

Shah Rukh Khan: That was absolutely the only reason. It’s a part of my childhood. You can ask anyone walking the streets, anyone who is my age and has grown up on Don. It’s a 27-year-old movie. Ask anyone in CNN-IBN office, wouldn’t they just love the dialogue “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai (It’s not just difficult to catch the Don, it’s impossible). I won’t say it as well. The film won’t be as great either. It’s no comparison at all, rather, it’s a dream come true. I mean, you start your career with a film called Deewana, where you make an entry in the second half and 16 years later, there you are – saying dialogues mouthed by an actor you saw on screen and wanted to be like. I am Amitabh Bachchan.

Music airplay: ETC, T-Series at loggerheads

MUMBAI: The Zee Network owned music channels ETC and Zee Music have decided to take on T-Series, the audio company which controls a large of chunk of the Bollywood music market, over what they assert are pending dues amounting to over Rs 70 million.

ETC Networks has issued a notice declaring that it has “with immediate effect stopped accepting bookings for telecasting of film trailers and promos of film and non film music from Super Cassette Industries Ltd (T-Series).”

Countering the charge, T-Series has denied any outstandings and has retaliated by claiming that it is Zee that has infringed on the intellectual property rights of the entire film industry, including T-Series.

The ETC release, meanwhile, points out, “All concerned producers who have made bookings through Super Cassette Industries may kindly note that their trailers and promos will not be telecast by us on account of deliberate and purposeful default of payment.”

ETC has also highlighted that “all producers who are interested in telecasting their film trailers and promos of film and non film music with immediate effect as well as in future are requested to directly approach the company.” The statement further says that ETC is ready to provide “new revised and reduced rates and terms” specially for producers.

T-Series holds the audio rights of some big upcoming releases in 2006 including Babul, Salaam-e Ishq, Jaaneman and the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Don, so how the face-off plays out could well have far-reaching implications across the industry.

  • Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee win Star’s Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards 2006

Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee win Star’s Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards 2006

May 7, 2006 : The wait is finally over… The verdict is out…The journey that started over three months ago has reached a triumphant conclusion.. Over 9 lakh fans from India & 23 nations across the globe have declared their Sabsey Favourites. And 7 winners have walked away with the only true measure of their popularity with the masses: the unique gold brick trophy of the Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards.

The battles were close in practically every category, with leads changing hands practically, every day of the 30 day national voting period. But at the end, when the dust settled, this is how the picture looked:

The Sabsey Favourite Hero category surprised no one by boiling down to a battle between the Khans – Shahrukh & Salman, with Shahrukh Khan winning almost by a hair’s breadth. It just proved once again that while Shahrukh is truly King Khan, the masses adoration for Salman remains undiminished despite all his recent travails. Bengali beauty Rani Mukerji was crowned Sabsey Favourite Heroine with competition from Aishwarya Rai.and Rani’s cousin Kajol. The results are testimony to the enduring popularity of the Mukerji cousins Rani has had no releases since almost a year, and Kajol has had none after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2002. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BLACK laid to rest all arguments about it being the favourite of only the classes with the masses declaring it a clear winner in the Sabsey Favourite Film category. In the Sabsey Favourite Naya Hero category the fight was really close between Kunal Kapoor and Kunal Khemu, with Kunal Kapoor coming through in the end. Doe eyed Vidya Balan won the Sabsey Favourite Nayi Heroine , pipping Katrina Kaif to the post. The Sabsey Favourite Comic Hero saw a hat trick as Paresh Rawal bagged the award for the third year in a row. The Sabsey Tez Sitara Award – the only award not voted in by fans, but where film industry experts pick out the rising star who has made the most strides in the last one year- went to John Abraham. He followed in the footsteps of Abhishek Bachchan who had won last year.

Last but not the least, an award that holds a special meaning for the lakhs of fans who voted in: The Sabsey Bada Fan Award: Mrs. Madhuri M. Madekar from Kalyan had participated in the Sabsey Bada Fan contest was crowned the Sabsey Bada Fan: the fan who voted the most number of times for the eventual winner.

Of course, it was not just about the awards. The performances were stunning as well. The night was filled with excitement as Trickbaby from London performed their megahits from Bluffmaster. What’s more, the video of the song ‘Nine Parts of Desire’, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, was unveiled for the first time, at the awards ceremony. Udita Goswami & Kunal Khemu rocked the event as they performed a medley of Himesh Reshammiya songs – remixed to reflect the various musical forms of the country. So don’t be surprised if you hear “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa” in Bharatnatyam beats or “Laagi Laagi” in Bhangra style.

Tanushree Dutta with Vinay Pathak & Suresh Menon of the Great Indian Comedy Show showed viewers what it would be like in 2006 when the all-time classics of Hindi cinema – Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Don & more are remade. Hilarious skits on the theme with classic numbers from those films remixed made for compelling viewing. Fardeen Khan performed on the theme “The Many Moods of Fardeen”. The show stopper was Hrithik Roshan; in a thrilling performance tracking his journey from ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ to ‘Krrish’. This was also his first ever stage performance based on ‘Krrish’. The whole performance was specially choreographed by ace choreographer Ganesh Hegde. The Host with the Most Arshad Warsi and his spunky wife Maria Goretti hosted the show and had the audience in splits with their one liners. Viewers will certainly have a treat when Star Gold telecasts the event on the 14th of May at 8 pm.

And it is the viewers themselves who have chosen the nominees as well as the winners of Star Gold’s Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun 2006- the only awards show were winners are honoured for their popularity and not performances in a particular film. While the Sabsey Favourite Kaun Election Express covered 45 towns & 24,000 kms to collect almost 1 lakh votes from fans to create the nomination lists, more than 8 Lakh votes came in through sms, the internet ( indya.com ) and televoting to choose the final winners. In all, almost 9 lakh votes from India as well as countries as far flung as Afghanistan, Peru, Bahrain, Tanzania, Mozambique, Bangladesh , and of course, USA, UK & the Middle East were cast to choose the eventual winners. Today it all came together for the grand finale.

  • Frames debates the merits of the studio versus the independent filmmaker

MUMBAI: The relationship between studios and independent filmmakers was a subject discussed at an afternoon session of Frames, the convention for the business of entertainment. The speakers were Sahara One CEO Shantonu Aditya, filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt,Govind Nihalani and Bobby Bedi and Adlabs Films chairman Manmohan Shetty.

Nihalani pointed out that studios and independent filmmakers have their strengths and both parties should look to work with each other. “Artistically released commercially successful films can be made.
Corporates should realize that creativity is equity. The independents should realize that money is as important as creativity. Studios should know that sometimes small risks pay off big time. That is because audiences like to be surprised.

“A studio basically operates on calculated budgets and big stars to secure an ROI. Scripts are chosen if a star is attached. This ensures a long run. An independent filmmaker, on the other hand, feels that an idea and a directors treatment of that idea is what creates value. Lavish sets, big stars add value. However, they do not create value. There is a way to bridge the two and both should realize that they need each other.”

This point was echoed by Shetty who noted that in the West independent filmmakers go the studio route to release their films. In India, there are studios like Yash Raj Films. However, important directors like Karan Johar still call the shots and studios chase them for the rights to distribute their films. “Reliance buying Adlabs means that more films will be made. Fortunately we have not suffered any losses till now.”

Bhatt spoke on the benefits and challenges of being an independent filmmaker. “Movies that do not have personal supervision of an idea are doomed to fail. One does not only make movies. You need passion and religious fervour. There is talk of delivery systems but you need to invest in ideas. Otherwise these systems will be parched of good content. It is important for a filmmaker to keep himself lean and thin. A studio executive unfortunately only understands a Shah Rukh Khan. He does not understand the value of an idea. I would argue that studios are victims of hype. An independent filmmaker, though, has to pay off any debts incurred. He cannot hide behind abstractions.”

Bedi said that indepdents are better incubators of ideas. “In the West studios do not incubate ideas as it is too expensive. An independent filmmaker approaches a studio with an idea. The studio then works that idea to a maturity level where one is able to confidently approach exhibitors.”

Aditya says that Sahara One has had success as it concentrates on its strengths of marketing and distribution. “We have made 14 films as projects. There have been start dates and finish dates. We have also spent quite a bit on marketing. We have worked in different genres. We picked up Page Three when nobody wanted to touch that film. At the same time, it is difficult to know which idea will work. We get 70 ideas a week. Of course, each presenter of the idea is confident in it. Once an idea is given the go ahead, we do not interfere with the creative process other than keeping a check on how the work is progressing. The writer is given freedom.”
