  • SRK to replace Big B as host of KBC

SRK to replace Big B as host of KBC

MUMBAI: Talk about making a big play. Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), Star India’s talismanic gameshow, will be back early next year with Bollywood’s biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan replacing Hindi cinema icon Amitabh Bachchan as host.

Star is pitching the third season of the hit show as a “Gen Next avatar” to “reach out to an India where two thirds of the population is below 35”.

The contract that Star has signed with Shah Rukh is for two seasons with an option to extend it further into a third season. While Star officials have refused to comment on the payout to the “Bollywood Badshah”, Indiantelevision.com has it from reliable sources that the two-season deal is worth a whopping $ 7 million (roughly Rs 320 million).

Each season is for 52 episodes, which means that Shah Rukh has committed to shooting 104 episodes of KBC in all. It is worth noting that the second season of KBC had to be aborted after completing only 61 of the contracted 85 episodes due to Bachchan’s sudden illness.

Newswire Press Trust of India quoted Star Entertainment India CEO Sameer Nair as saying, “Mr Bachchan expressed his disinclination to do the show and we respect his decision. We are indebted to him for what he brought to the show but now it is time to move on and who better to hand over the baton to than Shah Rukh Khan.

“We have been in talks with Shah Rukh Khan for over a month now and he expressed his willingness to do the show. Shooting will begin by December-end and we expect this season to be on air by January-end.”

The show has been slotted in the 9 pm prime time band and will air Monday through to Thursday every week, the same as was the case when KBC first came on air. This effectively means that each season will have a 13-week run.

Nair has been quoted in an official release as saying, “We are extremely delighted to announce the Next Gen avatar of KBC and are even more pleased to present Shah Rukh Khan, as its host. We promise to engage and deliver to our audiences a whole new entertainment experience.”

Shah Rukh Khan added, “I was pleasantly surprised when Star offered me the show. I was a participant in season one of KBC…and little did I know one day I would be hosting it. It is a huge act to follow, that of Mr Bachchan…but it also excites me that I am getting an opportunity to reach out…talk and interact with my audience through a medium where I began my career as an actor years ago. So here’s looking forward to coming round a full circle…guess unlock kiya jaaye.”

Star India has signed a five-year contract with Celador for KBC, the Indian adaptation of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The deal incorporates both the format and programme license, and is the longest continuing license that has ever been granted for the globally successful show.

KBC will be produced by Siddhartha Basu’s Synergy Communications. Says Basu, “KBC with SRK will bring a whole new set of audience to Star Plus. Although I have been associated with KBC ever since it began, this is literally a new beginning for me. SRK’s wit, energy, excitement and enthusiasm will rub-off onto all of us and together as a team we hope to create some magical moments on television.”

SRK to be honoured at Dubai International Film Festival

MUMBAI: The Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) has announced this year’s festival will honour Shah Rukh Khan, Oliver Stone and Nabil El-Maleh and for their outstanding contribution to cinema, as part of the Diff Salutes programme.

The festival will run from 10-17 December 2006 at the Madinat Jumeirah. Diff Salutes is a retrospective tribute that celebrates the work of distinguished film makers from Asia, the Arab world, and Hollywood. This follows last year’s In the Spotlight segment, which honoured Oscar-winning American actor Morgan Freeman, the Egyptian “king of comedy” Adel Imam, and Indian producer-director Yash Chopra.

Diff chairman Abdulhamid Juma said, “Within three years, Diff has come a long way in capturing the attention, participation and awareness of the regional and international film industry. The presence of these legends will confirm the festival as a forum that celebrates milestone cinema.

“Retrospective screenings of their acclaimed work will provide further momentum to Diff’s objective of inspiring an emerging generation of film makers, who we think will take the industry to new levels of growth.”
Stone has won the Oscar thrice. Stone won two oscars for the Vietnam films Platoon and Born On The Fourth of July.

At the forefront of several genre trends, his films are well crafted epics that deal with the effect of history on the individual and vice versa. A distinct feature of Oliver Stone’s movies is the unique use of cameras and film formats, as seen in JFK (1991) and Natural Born Killers (1994). Stone’s most recent film, World Trade Center, follows the thread of his earlier works in documenting events in the US that impact people’s lives.

King Khan has appeared in over 55 films. Two of his films were India’s official entries in the Oscars: Paheli (2006) and Devdas (2002).

Coming this September, Sahara One Television brings alive a brand new reality concept, Super Stars, in association with Endemol India.

The new show proposes to provide Bollywood fans with an opportunity to showcase their talent and perform as their favourite star.

This international format has seen a production of over 70-odd series in 20 countries across the globe under different names like Sound Mix and Stars in the Eyes.

The Indian version of this show kick starts with a five-city audition on Sahara One starting 10 August, 2006.

In each episode, contestants compete by copying their favourite artist as faithfully as possible.

“India is a nation obsessed with Bollywood. There are temples, clubs, associations dedicated to film actors. Dancing and singing is not only about performing; it’s a passion that drives the souls of many. It’s our endeavour to provide a national platform for such talent,” Sahara One COO Purnendu Bose says.

The jury for Super Stars includes Bollywood heavy weights like the gorgeous Urmila Matondkar and ace choreographer Shiamak Davar. There would be floating judges too for particular episodes.

The whole of August, Super Stars will do a nation-wide hunt in an attempt to unearth the flair people possess to be like their stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor, Hritik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The contestants will be judged on three parameters – look and style, acting and dance — and will vie for the ultimate honour: the title of Super Star.

According to Endemol India MD Rajesh Kamat, “We are very excited to partner with Sahara One Television on this special format. It is a show people will connect with and it will feature people that they will connect with.”
