Madras Caf fails to rake in the moolah, collects Rs 18 crore

Madras Cafe, starring John Abraham directed by Shoojit Sircar of Vicky Donor fame, opened low on Friday but managed to do better on Saturday and Sunday, especially at select multiplexes in Metro cities. However, public response failed to match that of the critics thus the slide is inevitable on days to follow. The film has collected Rs 18 crore for the opening weekend.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, a story about underworld rivalry borne out of love for same girl, fails on all counts from casting to scripting. The film, which opened on 15 August holiday and took Rs 34.6 crore for the four day weekend, could add only little over Rs 14 crore for the other four days to close its first week with Rs 48.8 crore, the best figures coming from Bombay Circuit. The film is a sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010) but has failed to cash in on the success of the first installment.

Chennai Express starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone sustains well with the advantage of a weak opposition in its second week. The film collects Rs 36.7 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 178.7 crore.

B.A. Pass collects Rs 45 lakh in its third week and takes its three week total to Rs 7.05 crore.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya adds Rs 10 lakh for the fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 26.07 crore.

OUATIMD fails to cash in on Independence Day release

MUMBAI: Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara starring Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha could reap only limited benefit of its release on 15th August holiday as the screens available to it were limited. Thereafter, as the reports were unfavourable, the film could not grow over the weekend. The film ended its four-day weekend with Rs 34.6 crore.

Chennai Express starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone has become the biggest weekend grosser as well as setting a fantastic record for the biggest first week collections. With paid previews included the film has set a new benchmark of Rs 142 crore for week one. With the week’s new release not enjoying favourable reports, the film will stand to gain in its second week run.

B A Pass has been able to sustain through its second week. The film collected Rs 1.25 crore in second week to take its two week total to Rs 6.6 crore.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya has added a symbolic Rs 12 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 25.97 crore.

D-Day has finally remained much below its merits, managed a meagre Rs 10 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 19.6 crore.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag the biopic on the great Indian athlete Milkha Singh also called “the flying sikh” starring Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor has collected Rs 2.5 crore in its fifth week to take its five week tally to Rs 105.25 crore.

  • SRK starrer Chennai Express storms ahead with Rs 92 crore

SRK starrer Chennai Express storms ahead with Rs 92 crore

MUMBAI: Rohit Shetty’s big budget action-comedy Chennai Express has made the most of the Eid weekend solo release. The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer’s high decibel promotion has also paid rewards as the film has swept the box office to set a new weekend collection record. Also, calling it a clean family entertainer has helped, as the film ended its weekend (paid previews on 8 August included) with Rs 92 crore, an outstanding fete on all counts.

Having exhausted a lot of its ‘Must Watch’ audience, the film has slowed down at multiplexes but holding on well at single screens. The film left no chance of using various platforms for promotions, SRK featured on popular television fiction and non-fiction shows over the past one month including Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Madhubala: Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, Comedy Nights With Kapil to name a few.

Of the smaller releases of the last week, BA Pass starring Shilpa Shukla (Chak De India! fame) seems to have impressed the critics as a noir film! The film managed to put together Rs 5.35 crore for its first week.

Rabba Main Kya Karoon starring Akash Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal and Riya Sen has bordered on the one crore rupees mark in its first week.

Bajatey Raho coined as a revenge comedy and having some well known names to boast off like Tusshar Kapoor, Dolly Ahluwalia, Ranvir Shorey, Ravi Kishan, Vinay Pathak, Vishakha Singh struggled to put together another Rs 55 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 7.05 crore.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya which marked the debut of Girish Kumar alongside Shruti Hassan collected Rs 1.2 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 25.85 crore.

D-Day has done reasonably well to collect Rs 1.5 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 19.5 crore.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which saw Farhan Akhtar depict the role of ‘the flying sikh’ Milhka Singh has collected Rs 8.5 crore in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 102.75 crore.

The concept of this TVC is very unique and refreshing with the appropriate use of the gigantic umbrella. Kansai Nerolac Paints vice-president- marketing and sales (Decorative) Sukhpreet Singh said, “The film follows a realistic approach capturing the expression and reaction of the locals on witnessing the gigantic umbrella which is aesthetically interwoven with the scenic rustic beauty of the locations. Our association with SRK has grown stronger over the years with him lending his persona to the brand.”

The ad film is a visual treat as one explores the rustic locales of Kerala and Jodhpur accompanied by a melodious audio. One will witness exaggeration, passive humor and an element of surprise and suspense throughout the film.

ABP CEO Ashok Venkatramani says, “We started this for recognising all the achievements that Maharashtrians have won, through excellence in their own fields and in the process have brought glory to the nation. It is a great motivator and it elevates people to greater heights that they deserve. We usually look at the last year or two and pick up stories of success and stories of excellence of Maharashtrians or people from the state of Maharashtra.”

The awardees were selected on the basis of excellence in their respective feilds

In its fourth year, the award function was indeed a memorable evening with union cabinet minister Sharad Pawar as the chief guest and Khan as the star attraction along with the ABP family. What more? The grand trophy is designed by eminent artist – Arzaan Khambatta who beautifully captures the dynamism, alertness, and effort of a Mahrashtrian to move ahead and benefit the society at large.

ABP Majha recognises the work of Vijaya Mehta in the field of art

Venkatramani informs,”This is a very well received award. It helps us to bond with our consumers and with our viewers. We are able to bring out unknown stories of excellence which is there all around the state, which otherwise does not get the focus and attention. By rewarding those achievers, we are rewarding not only from ourselves but on behalf of all our audiences.”

(L-R) Kiran Nagarkar, Sharad Pawar and Aveek Sarkar

ABP recognised and felicitated 11 living legends of Maharashtra, who have brought excellence in their chosen fields and have added to the pride of Maharashtra through their immense contribution.
ABP COO Avinash Pandey emphasises: “All the people that we awarded, you wouldn’t find them getting awarded by all sections of the society. These individuals, at their individual level have done extra-ordinary service to the society. And we have recognised their contributions, irrespective of any commercial pressure. We don’t give award to anybody who doesn’t deserve it. And that’s the strength of ABP unlike many other awards which are available in the market.”

Union cabinet minister Sharad Pawar graces the occasion as the chief guest

The awardees this year included various personalities from Maharashtra who contributed greatly to the society in fields like art, literature, music, sports, fashion, entertainment and business. Delhi gave me birth, Mumbai brought me up. This state and this city have made me what I am today, says Shah Rukh Khan

Pandey talks about the importance of the awards from the business perspective. “This award function stands for three things. One, it generates extra-ordinary content for Television; Second, it helps as a party of the society as we are representatives of the society. It is our way of giving back to the society. This is our natural responsibility as a business. Third, it helps my advertisers to integrate well with the cause and the content and deliver a remarkable story to the viewers. This is why from year on year we make it better than what we did last year.”

The evening kicked off with a fabulous performance by Sharbari Dance troop enthralling the audience with traditional Ganesh Vandana. Post this, ABP group chairman Aveek Sarkar shared his vision for ABP Majha and lauded the ceaseless commitment they put towards being a responsible and progressive News channel.

Majha Sanman Puraskar goes on to add a commendable CSR initiate for the ABP network. What does ABP stand for as a news channel in India? Pandey concludes in his response: “I have worked in news companies all my life. ABP is one such company that it does not do anything, unless it adds immense value to the viewer, advertiser or reader. If it is not valuable information, they will not go for it.”
