  • Disney India sees senior level exits

Disney India sees senior level exits

MUMBAI: It was in October, last year, that the news of Ronnie Screwvala deciding to step down as the managing director of Disney India (then Disney UTV) broke.

Screwvala, since then, has pursued his entrepreneurial goals and invested in various companies and Siddharth Roy Kapur has taken over the company’s India operations, effective 1 January.

Nonetheless, the move has lead to many other changes in the company. In the recent past, many at the senior management have left the company.

The first one to leave after this change was the Disney UTV Media Networks managing director MK Anand. He is currently the managing director and chief executive officer at Times Television Network.

Anand had joined UTV Global Broadcasting in 2009 as CEO and after the Walt Disney acquisition in 2012, he was appointed the managing director of Disney UTV Media Networks.

He was followed soon by others. Two of its employees left to join Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainments. Gaurav Verma joined the production house as its new chief revenue officer while Manish Hari Prasad joined it, after being instrumental in getting the (Disney) studio its most successful film, ‘Chennai Express’, on board.

Verma , as Disney executive director theatrical distribution, handled worldwide theatrical distribution, while Prasad was the creative director of UTV.

The latest to move on from the network is Shikha Kapur. Kapur who was heading marketing for Studios, Broadcasting (youth and movie) and the Interactive business and served as the vice president of the company has joined Fox Star India as chief marketing officer.

As per industry sources, this isn’t the end of top management leaving the company. Many more will be soon following in biding goodbye to Disney India.

The sources blame Ronnie’s exit and Kapur’s elevation behind these exists.

We will have to just wait and watch what happens next.

  • Want to woo youngsters? Depend on youth channels

Want to woo youngsters? Depend on youth channels

MUMBAI: In-branding is not unusual today as we see superstars selling the brands they endorse even in their films. Remember Chennai Express and how Shah Rukh Khan endorsed the features of the new Nokia mobile (of which he is also a brand ambassador) in the film. And if you thought it was just him, then you are wrong. Hrithik Roshan starrer Krrish 3 had a host of FMCG products being promoted through the movie.

The phenomenon has not spared the small screen as well. Right from the brands to film stars, the small screen has become a popular destination for promotion. However, this time around there is a twist.

With the nation gearing for the upcoming elections, the political parties are doing all that they can to get voters to get inked. This election season the parties are finding innovative ways to connect with the audiences, especially the youth. And if you watch Channel V India, a youth entertainment channel, you would know what we are hinting at.

The main characters of various shows on the channel can be seen talking about how prices have risen in the past years or how it is the time to bring change. This, while a ticker/astrix runs with BJP’s symbol and message.

The political parties – Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) – both in their mission to woo the first-time voters are now targeting youth channels.

“Youth channels are the best way to catch the attention of first-time voters and since we are using different strategies, we thought of trying this as well,” says a source from the media agency handling BJP’s mandate.

The source goes on to say that it is a “different” way to reach our audience. And, one will see a lot of astrixs and L- shaped advertisements on various GECs as well as news channels till the elections commence.

While BJPs in-branding campaign on shows started last week, the Congress had bought ad-spots on Channel V I almost a month back.

Channel V, itself, through various initiatives, is encouraging youngsters to go out and vote. “This doesn’t mean we support a particular party over the other. These are just commercial deals which we sign with agencies handling the parties. There is no association with any party,” clarifies Channel V India, GM & channel head Prem Kamath.

So, the next time you tune in to shows like Sadda Haq or Dil Dosti Dance, on Channel V, do not miss out on the message from the lead characters to go out and vote.

  • NDTV Prime to fully operate on sponsored programmes

NDTV Prime to fully operate on sponsored programmes

MUMBAI: New Delhi Television (NDTV) is carrying forward its de-risking strategy of reducing dependence on advertising revenues. Higher revenues from programme sponsorship had helped the news broadcaster report a small net profit of Rs 2 crore in 2012-13 despite weak advertising revenues, after two years of losses.

NDTV has now brought on board a channel sponsor and a channel partner for its split channels NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime. NDTV has from tonight converted its business news channel NDTV Profit into a dual channel – NDTV Profit will be a business news channel from 9:00 am till 5:00 pm on weekdays and will thereafter convert into a lifestyle and entertainment channel NDTV Prime. Over the weekends, the channel will be entirely NDTV Prime.

The 2-in-1 channel will provide NDTV with two primetime segments, one during the market hours and the second in the evening.

Mobile phone maker Micromax will be NDTV Prime’s channel partner for a three-year period, under a deal, according to sources, that’s valued at a shade above Rs 30 crore. Micromax will gain huge mileage as its emblem ‘M’ will be replacing the character ‘m’ in NDTV Prime.

NDTV has a channel partner for NDTV Profit in the country’s largest exchange the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The channel will carry a line ‘Partnered by NSE’ under the NDTV Profit logo.

A promotional campaign featuring Shah Rukh Khan has already begun through print and TV with the tagline ‘Work Hard Play Hard’ embodying the dual nature of NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime.

NSE MD and CEO Chitra Ramakrishnan said the goals of NSE and NDTV Profit were similar in terms of investor outreach.

Says Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma, “NDTV Prime provides an ideal opportunity for Micromax to reach out to evolved viewers through new programming on lifestyle, reality, automobiles, sports, music, property, gadgets and gizmos and comedy. With digitisation and advancement of technology, we are seeing a trend for greater consumption of high quality
    content among the viewers.”

In addition to the channel sponsor for NDTV Prime, the channel will also have sponsor or sponsors for every programme. This is expected to help NDTV Prime break-even within a year.

As reported earlier by indiantelevision.com, NDTV Prime’s big-ticket show will be ‘Ticket to Bollywood’ sponsored by Videocon d2h along with VLCC and Fortis. Prime has been divided into various bands that are sponsored as well.

Education band ‘Mindspace’ at 6:30 pm is sponsored by LIC, IMS, Vidyalankar and Rau’s IAS study circle, Property at 7:00pm is powered by Supertech and indiaproperty.com, Tech band at 8:00 pm is sponsored by Croma, Nokia and Toshiba, Auto band at 8:30 pm is with MRF, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Volvo, VistaTech, Mobil1 and Polaris as main sponsors.

The Comedy band at 10:00 pm and Strip movies at 10:30 pm are currently the only ones without sponsors. “How often do you see a channel which even before launch is pre-sold? People know this channel will work and I was sure we won’t launch it without having the money in the bank,” says NDTV group CEO Vikram Chandra.

Each band will have a different show each day of the week. Along with TV, NDTV Prime will also have exclusive shows on its website www.ndtvprime.com. One of the first is two technology pieces of five to seven minutes that will be exclusively on its website every day.

Does the genre have enough of such content to put out on a daily basis? Tech anchor Rajiv Makhni says, “In technology, something or the other is happening every day. If a mobile is launched say on a Monday why would you wait till Saturday to see a feature on it? So on Prime you will see news, analysis as well as suggestions. Not only will we zoom in on a few best in every category but we will also tell you exactly which product should you buy.”

He also goes on to explain that just because Micromax and Nokia are sponsors, there will be no bias in favour of these brands. “If a product has flaws then it has flaws. You will see it on our shows,” says Makhni.

Men will drive the viewership for NDTV Prime. “A lot of our evening content is aimed for people with interests besides stock market. In fact, now our morning viewership will be a subset of our evening one and the evening will see 10 times more viewership,” says NDTV co-chairperson Prannoy Roy.

With the facelift that NDTV has given to NDTV Profit with a split channel in NDTV Prime, it is also looking at beefing up its distribution with a lot of pull effect coming from people who want to watch Prime, especially Ticket to Bollywood.

“Entertainment and comedy usually has a pull distribution effect. So in this case we don’t have to pay carriage fee as well,” admitted Roy.

Roy, who was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of NDTV Prime, also spoke about the future prospects of NDTV. “Our future has got more to do with the digital platform ndtv.com,” says Roy.

Chandra had earlier said a large part of NDTV’s losses were due to NDTV Profit and now with Prime in place, the company is confident that its profits will get a boost.

  • SRK relives the KKR moments with a documentary

SRK relives the KKR moments with a documentary

MUMBAI: When failure struck him while handling his Indian Premiere League (IPL) team – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – he took it in his stride. Except for few times, the king Khan always came across as an encouraging team leader, who did everything needed to gear up “his boys”. In the last six editions of the IPL, the team has seen many ups and downs.

Shah Rukh Khan finds his team’s story to be an “incredibly compelling one” from start to finish and thus as the IPL is set to enter its seventh edition, Discovery Channel will present the riveting story of the team’s transformation – from a group of struggling players in the early years to their emergence as formidable champion of the league – in a four-part series, titled Living with KKR from 24 February to 27 February at 8 pm.

“When you’ve won once, and you see yourself on the verge of loss, just overcome your difficulties. I may sound materialistic, but forget emotions, and go ahead and bloody well win, or else you wouldn’t have your own documentary!” quipped Shah Rukh while launching the series on Friday at Taj Lands End.

When asked if he has a say in the management and functioning of the team? “Well, there is no creative input from my side in cricket as compared to films, where I do have a say.”

And like always, he was at his witty best when asked if being a Bollywood superstar has helped in making the team more popular. “Nobody remembers the excellent captaincy of Gautam Gambhir during that last match, where the ball went out the boundary, but people remember me picking up my daughter. So, yes, being popular has its own advantages,” he cheekily remarked.

Not just that, when a question was raised on the much talked about “superstition” surrounding the decisions being taken regarding the team, he had few interesting anecdotes to share. “When people don’t have anything to blame, they blame superstition. There were moments when people said, ‘kale ko neela kardo, jeet jaaoge’, and in fact, Juhi (Chawla) felt quite strongly about the colour! Also, when our team used to bat first, I used to leave late from the hotel thinking if we lose wickets early it is difficult to smile and cheer in front of people. And during that last match when Gautam Gambhir was out, I prayed, and there haven’t been a lot of time where I’ve had to pray because I know, whenever I pray, it comes true, or damn close to it.”

Khan also remarked that the IPL matches have been the most watched program on Indian television in the last five years, making it one of the most successful ventures of his career. During this year’s IPL auctions, KKR lost three of its veteran ball players – Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Mohammed Shami and Manoj Tiwary – but Khan remains undeterred, “We hope all the very best for Laxmi, Shami and Manoj. I do hope they flourish in their respective teams, and hope they can make it for our matches.” He continued, “And we have quite a good team on our hands now with younger Bengali players. We have a strong team town with Gautam Gambhir heading it.”

The first ever ‘Stree Sanman Award’ goes to Farah Khan at Lux Cozi Zee Cine Awards 2014

MUMBAI: It is rather challenging for a woman to emerge as a power to reckon with in a field dominated by men. In Bollywood, more often than not, women are often relegated to donning the greasepaint and serving as an arm candy for the film hero. Barring the role of an actress, most profiles within the film industry such as editor, director, producer or technician are ruled by men. For having managed to find her own footing in the frenzied world of Bollywood and carving a distinct niche for herself first as a successful choreographer, then as a film director and producer, Farah Khan recently bagged a distinctive award at the Lux Cozi Zee Cine Awards 2014. The ‘Stree Samman Award’ is a first-of-its-kind initiative at a film awards show aimed at recognizing the contribution made by industrious, enterprising women in a male-dominated industry.

Farah received the prestigious award at the hands of veteran film-maker, the Great Showman Subhash Ghai. As she went on stage to accept the award, Farah said, “They say behind every successful man, there is a woman. But let me tell you, behind this successful woman, there are a hundred men.” She went on to thank all the men who have stood by her side as a pillar of strength in the course of her journey in Bollywood. She also thanked Shah Rukh for having been a mentor and a dear friend. Subhash Ghai thanked the Zee group for coming up with this unique award.

Farah’s first stint as a choreographer began with ‘Pehla Nasha’ from Aamir Khan starrer, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. As a choreographer, Farah has received 25 prestigious awards in the course of her prolific career. Later, her penchant for entertaining the masses saw her direct and produce popular blockbusters like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. She is easily amongst the most successful commercial female filmmakers in Bollywood. As a director, her movie Om Shanti Om became the highest grossing Hindi film ever at the time of its release. Currently in the news for her upcoming multi-starrer ‘Happy New Year’, Farah is delighted on receiving this recognition. She tweeted, saying she was grateful to the jury of Lux Cozi Zee Cine Awards 2014 for choosing her for her efforts in the industry.
