SRK’s new role: Ambassador for Interpol’s ‘Turn Back Crime’ campaign

MUMBAI: Working for a social cause once again, the Bollywood superstar and heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan has now joined hands with Interpol to promote greater awareness in preventing crime.

The multi-award winning actor has been chosen by Interpol as the ambassador of its Turn Back Crime campaign. The global initiative highlights the dangers of organised crime and its effect on day-to-day lives of people. The campaign is aimed at helping the public better understand these issues and empowering them not to be duped by criminals when buying products or using the internet.

The don of Bollywood is the first Indian to be made an Ambassador for the global campaign. He will be lending his voice to help spread the message that all of society benefits when citizens respect the law and fight crime.

SRK joins actor Jackie Chan as an Ambassador for the campaign, which has already garnered support from public figures including footballer Lionel Messi, Formula 1 racing drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

Talking about this new opportunity, Shah Rukh Khan said, “It’s a very special honour to be a part of Interpol’s Turn Back Crime Campaign as an Ambassador. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘I shall not fear anyone on Earth. I shall fear only God. I shall not bear ill will toward anyone. I shall not submit to injustice from anyone. I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering, if I have to.’”

“We all should believe in this maxim and in whatever way possible resolve not to let unjust people who might threaten us with criminal activity make us fear them. Because I believe we can, we should, and we must stand together against the few who commit crimes against any human being, in whatever form or guise these crimes might take,” the actor added.

The campaign is also reaching out to companies and policy-makers in a bid to form a united front against contemporary crime challenges, and to support the ongoing activities of the global law enforcement community.

Happy with this new engagement, Interpol Secretary General Ronald K Noble said, “Shah Rukh Khan has dedicated his life to making films which reflect the highest level of professionalism and commitment to bringing joy into the lives of hundreds of millions of filmgoers in India and around the world.”

“We are honoured to have him as an Ambassador for Interpol’s global Turn Back Crime campaign and we look forward to seeing how he puts his artistic talents behind this campaign,” concluded the Interpol chief.

Nagesh Kukunoor gets SRK for a cameo

MUMBAI:  In a bid to give the noble cause of eye donation an impetus director Nagesh Kukunoor has got none other than the Baadshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan to do a cameo in his upcoming Marathi film Dhanak.

According to media reports, SRK recently shot for this movie in Rajasthan for two days despite his busy schedule.

Nagesh Kukunoor’s last film Laxmi highlighted the plight of young girls forced into prostitution in Hyderabad. His film Dhanak, being made in Marathi, hopes to support the noble cause of eye donation. Even though Shah Rukh Khan’s role in the film is now known, buzz is that he will be playing himself in the film and will endorse the noble cause of eye donation.

Dhanak tells the story of the deep bond that an older sister shares with her blind, younger brother and how she works towards restoring his eyesight before he turns nine.

Dhanak which means a ‘rainbow’ in Rajasthani language is reportedly a remake of the Iranian film Besak. Even though the film’s title is Dhanak, it will be called as Rainbow overseas.

SRK is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie Happy New Year, directed by Farah Khan which is slated for Diwali release this year.

  • News Nation gets a place in Limca Book of Records

News Nation gets a place in Limca Book of Records

MUMBAI: Last year when the government decided to stop the telegram service, news channel News Nation decided to use it to its advantage. Upon inquiry from the Limca Book of Records (LBR), it found that the record for the maximum number of telegrams sent in a day had earlier been held by a person in Kerala for sending 201 telegrams in one day.

It sent a mail to the LBR that it will be attempting to break the existing record. In order to break the record it had to send out a minimum of 50 telegrams more than the earlier record.

On 13 July 2013, the channel sent out 400 telegrams from the Noida post office to various people including the President, Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, Shah Rukh Khan, agencies, socialites etc. The message on the telegrams was ‘ab telegram nahi aayega, News Nation har khabar pahunchayega.’ Once it was done, it had to send the original receipts, photos and a video of the process to LBR.

Even though no one responded back in time (as the service was to be shut from 14 July), it has now received the response from the LBR that it has successfully created a new record of ‘most telegrams sent in a day (group)’. The record will feature in the next edition of the book that will come out in January 2015.

This record has also become unbreakable because the service no longer exists in the country.

‘Happy New Year’ trailer to be on Whatsapp

MUMBAI: In keeping with the tradition of innovatively marketing its films, Red Chillies Entertainments yet again comes out with a unique way to promote its movie ‘Happy New Year.’

For the first time an Indian film will send its trailer via WhatsApp to the users of the application. Simply by giving a missed call or dropping in a WhatsApp message at +91 9819020202, the audiences will get the trailer on their mobiles and tablets. Also, the restriction by WhatsApp on a broadcast message has specially been removed for this campaign.

Talking on the first-of-its-kind trailer release, Red Chillies Entertainment CEO Venky Mysore said, “As a company there is a special focus on constantly improving fan experience through innovation. Whether it was the first look of the movie at the beginning of the year through one of the biggest Twitter innovations with fans receiving customised posters from their favourite artists, which received close to a billion impressions as a campaign, or the new innovations with WhatsApp and Twitter for the upcoming movie – ‘Happy New Year’, our endeavour is to delight fans.”

“With over 50 million active users on WhatsApp in India who every day share millions of videos and images with individual friends and groups it was an obvious choice to use WhatsApp as a platform. The only challenge was the restriction by WhatsApp where a broadcast message cannot be sent to more than 250 friends/WhatsApp users but WhatsApp has specially removed this restriction for this campaign,” Mysore added.

Directed by Farah Khan, the eagerly-awaited ‘Happy New Year’ brings back Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan together, after their last blockbuster `Chennai Express.’ The movie also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Boman Irani and has been shot in Dubai. The trailer is scheduled to release on 14 August 2014, on the eve of Independence Day.

The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainments and distributed by Yash Raj Films worldwide. The film will release this Diwali in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages across the globe.

A ticketed event will feature performances by 10 Indian and 10 International talents.

Colors CEO Raj Nayak asserts, “With every show, we believe we are just reinventing ourselves. As a broadcaster, the property holds immense potential for us because the discerning audience harbours great appreciation for outstanding talent.”

He further adds that it took them time to put everything into place. “When we were ready with the idea, the artists were not available. So, it took two years for us to get all of them together on-board.”

According to RFS Entertainment owner Ravinderjit Singh, the promising new talent across genres proving their mettle on every platform makes India the perfect backdrop for a showcase of this magnitude. He believes it will be a delight for Indian audiences when the caliber of national and international talent will join hands.

Talking about advertisers’ traction, Nayak says it is at a pre mature level. “We have just made an announcement on this. But I am never worried about advertisers,” he laughs.

The tickets for the event will go on sale next week on www.bookmyshow.com which will be held at Mumbai’s Andheri Sports Complex on 6 December 2014. The channel will air it later for which the date hasn’t been finalised yet.

  • Kollywood sizzles at the eighth Vijay Awards

Kollywood sizzles at the eighth Vijay Awards

MUMBAI: Tamilians love their movies and even more the actors in them. It is well known that for Tamilians, film stars are no less than gods, as they pack a punch in every movie that thunders at the box office. And celebrating this were the 10,000 people, who had arrived in anticipation to catch a glimpse of stars at the eight annual Vijay Awards held at the Nehru Indoor stadium in Chennai.

Even before the arrival of the stars, the whistles and cheering commenced in full force. Capturing the entire crowd along with the 100 feet by 60 feet stage were 20 SD cameras both inside and outside the venue. This included still cameras, hand held cameras, jibs and one drone camera that caught the eye of the audience as it flew above the crowd.

The award show that went on for nearly seven and a half hours will be telecast in two parts (four hours each) on 20 July and 27 July. The entire execution was done by an in-house team of 100 with just the ground logistics and drone handling outsourced. The creative of the show as well as execution was taken care of by Vijay Awards core creative VP Mahendran while Star Vijay senior VP for programming Pradeep Peter was the man behind the camera work for effective on air scene shots.

The huge list of sponsors brought in by  Star Vijay senior VP for ad sales Dev Shenoy included title sponsor Gionee Smart Phones, Casa Grand as powered by sponsor, Dr. M. G. R University Maduravoyil, Nandu Brand Lungies, Repco Home Finance and RRP Housing as co presenting sponsors, Sunland Refined Sunflower Oil, Step Stone  Promoters,  V Care hair growth Vitalizer, The Chennai Silks, Poomalai Housing, Kibbs Lungigal, Vijaya optical House, RPG Developers, Shakthi Masala, Ran India TMT Kambigal, Fairever Fairness Cream as associate sponsors. Hyatt Regency Chennai was hospitality partner, Dindigul Thalappakatti Biryani  was delicacy partner and The Hindu was print partner. Now, the hunt is on for on-air sponsors.

Vijay Awards hosted by Divyadarshini and Neeya Nana Gopinath saw dance performances by the winners of Zee TV’s DID L’il Masters season 3 winners, actress Shruti Hassan and Hansika Motwani. Says Star Vijay GM K Sriram, “We have been working for 24 hours from the past 45 days to make it a success. Vijay Awards is one of the most popular awards in the state of Tamil Nadu and people throng to witness it and to see the stars that come for the event. Our anchors are on par with any big celebrity host.” Last year the show was hosted by Gopi and actor R Madhavan.

The channel says that the stage, LED, lighting, choreography, costumes as well as AVs and scripts for the show were scaled up from the previous year. Indeed, several dance performances saw fire being shot from the stage for enhanced viewing. Dance performances saw dancers drop from above the stage for impact. The event only got better with the Kollywood stars arriving in the stadium, which saw an increase in the noise decibels. These included Vijay, AR Rahman, Kamal, Surya, Kushboo, Hansika, Nayantara, Ajith, Hassan and Karthik. Not to forget, the event was also attended for the second time in a row by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who was presented with the ‘entertainer of Indian cinema’ award by Rajinikanth’s wife Latha.

An intense marketing campaign was launched four weeks prior to the show that saw ads of 10,000 square centimeters being given in all leading dailies in English and Tamil newspapers such as Times of India, the Hindu, Ananda Vikatan and Kumudham. Radio spots were bought on Radio Mirchi across Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy. “The voting was exclusive on the digital medium and we had an audience attention of close to three crore over the four week period. Close to Rs one crore worth of advertising space and time had been mobilised for this massive promotion,” says Star Vijay senior VP for planning and marketing Balachandran. 25 hoardings and 10,000 posters were booked across the state as well showing the golden lady trophy of Vijay Awards. Digital and print will be once again used prior to the TV screening.

“Close to Rs 8.5 crore was spent on the entire event to make it a grand one,” says Sriram. Indeed, the spectacle of seeing eminent personalities on stage together standing and posing for a selfie was the moment of the night. Although the audience did not stay still for a second, the entire stadium erupted in a din when Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan entered the venue. While the soft spoken Vijay, who plays the macho actor on screen, shyly took away the award for the ‘favourite actor of the year’, SRK was at his usual best and grooved on stage to his own numbers while the audience cheered and clapped.

Some of the awards, out of the 40 given were, Kamal Hassan for ‘Best Actor,’ Nayantara for ‘Best as well as Favourite Actress,’ Aarambam for ‘Favourite Film,’ Vishwaroopam for ‘Best Film’ and AR Rahman for ‘Best Music Director.’

It will be graced by popular South celebrities including Shruti Haasan, Hansika Motwani, Vaani Kapoor and Lakshmi Rai.

  • Anupam Kher gets chatty with stars

Anupam Kher gets chatty with stars

MUMBAI: Whoever said what’s in the name hasn’t met Shah Rukh Khan then. The baadshah of the Indian film industry is known by many names, Rahul being the most popular one.

But would things have been the same if he was named Abdul Rehman as per his grandparents’ wish? The star’s parents went ahead with Shah Rukh Khan which means face of the king, maybe the real reason behind his success.

It has never been written or heard of. But things are going to change as actor Anupam Kher will ask intriguing questions to the people we idolize and sometimes worship on his latest show, ‘The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai.’

Come 6 July and the show will present viewers with unprecedented glimpse into the lives of their favourite celebrities, as they reveal stories of faith, hope, struggle, victory and success every Sunday at 8pm on Colors.

The channel synonymous with celebrities, recently through its show, Mission Sapne, got celebrities to live the life of a common man, and with the new show, it will set new heights as celebs will talk about their journey from ‘aam’ to ‘khaas’.

Produced by Actor Prepares Productions, season one will see prominent celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt, Vidya Balan, David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan, Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, Kapil Sharma, Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, cricketer Yuvraj Singh and Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah on the show.

The show is an extension of Kher’s popular autobiographical play ‘Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai’.

Colors CEO Raj Nayak recalls the moment when 10 years back Kher invited him and his family for the premier of ‘Kucch bhi Ho Sakta Hai’. “Those days I hardly knew anybody in Bollywood. Anupam was the first few people whom I knew. The show was exciting and it is then that I told him, why don’t we put this on television?”

Six months back, they met and decided upon it as they thought the time was right. And from there it all started; however, Nayak wanted the show to be different from his play. He didn’t want Kher to speak about his life, his sacrifices etc like in the play but about others.

According to Nayak the beauty of the show will be its no fixed format or structure. More so, he didn’t even want it to be scripted.  For him, the show should make one cry or laugh naturally, while giving an insight into the life of celebrities like never before.

For Colors digital head Vivek Srivastava, Kher has a charming personality and the fact that he knows everybody in the industry proved to be an advantage. “Kher was completely clear in his mind that he is going to chat with people about aspects which are not regular, something which will show a different side of a star. The fact that he is friendly with most of them and the fact that he knows so much about their lives, people opened up automatically,” he says.

With the set created only for 20 days at Filmcity, all the episodes have already been shot. The team consists of only five-six members including two researchers.

The biggest challenge for the entire team was what content to keep and what to cut. “Every episode, the conversations went on for hours. So, it got difficult for us to chop it into an hour’s content,” informs Srivastava.

The channel has got Jyothi Laboratories’ Henko on-board as the powered by sponsor.

Colors is always known for its heavy digital marketing. Apart from the regular push, the aim is to bring the show alive on the digital platforms. Fans will get to interact with Kher, keeping the spirit of the show live. An application on Facebook called ‘Reading the true sides of the people’ has been created which will through questions try to unravel the kind of personality one is.

“As the show progresses, one will also see a rise in the amount of engagement activities with the fan,” adds Srivastava.

The channel expects good ratings for the show, unlike Mission Sapne which did not deliver good ratings despite having celebrities on-board. Says Nayak, “Mission Sapne was a hatke show. But, unfortunately for MS, it came right in the middle of IPL. Had we delayed the launch, maybe we would have got much better ratings. But for us, it was a huge success and profitable because none of the stars charged us to come onboard. And the same is with the upcoming property.”

Nayak and his programming team know that talk shows do not give ratings, but he is confident that Kher’s show will work wonders for the channel. “For me it is not a talk show, it is an Anupam Kher show. We as a channel have been known for showing cutting-edge content.”

Nayak believes that today audiences are very demanding and there is nothing like channel loyalty but viewers are more loyal towards programmes. Already expecting a successful season one, the channel has plans to get season two in the coming months. It plans to get new faces on-board every time.

According to a highly placed media planner, considering it’s a Sunday property, it might not get the ratings it expects. “The concept is nice, something catchy, but viewers are very demanding at the end-of-the-day. Content has to be really strong to keep the audience engaged.”
