    Oscars unveils stellar line-up of presenters

    MUMBAI: This year’s Oscars will see a stellar line-up of presenters. 

     

    From Josh Hutcherson, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Octavia Spencer, Marion Cotillard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey to Lupita Nyong’o, the who’s who of Hollywood will take to the stage to present various awards this year.

     

    Cotillard, Cumberbatch, Streep, Winfrey and Witherspoon have all been nominated for the Oscars this year. Cotillard is nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for Two Days, One Night. She previously won an Oscar in this category for La Vie en Rose (2007). On the other hand, Cumberbatch is nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for The Imitation Game.

     

    Streep earned a record 19th acting nomination this year for her supporting role in Into the Woods. She previously took home Oscars for her lead performances in Sophie’s Choice (1982) and The Iron Lady (2011), and her supporting performance in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). Streep’s previous Best Actress nominations were for The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981), Silkwood (1983), Out of Africa (1985), Ironweed (1987), A Cry in the Dark (1988), Postcards from the Edge (1990), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), One True Thing (1998), Music of the Heart (1999), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Doubt (2008), Julie & Julia (2009) and August: Osage County (2013). She also received Best Supporting Actress nominations for The Deer Hunter (1978) and Adaptation (2002).

     

    Winfrey is nominated for Best Picture as one of the producers of Selma. She was previously nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role for The Color Purple (1985). She received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2011.

     

    Witherspoon is nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for Wild. She previously won an Oscar in this category for the 2005 movie Walk the Line.

     

    Additionally, last year’s Oscar winners Blanchett, Leto, McConaughey and Nyong’o will also be seen presenting awards this year. “The great tradition of having the previous year’s Oscar-winning best actors and actresses in all four categories happily continues this year with the amazing quartet of Cate, Jared, Matthew and Lupita. We’re thrilled to have them back,” said show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

     

    Blanchett has been nominated for six Oscars and has won two, including last year’s award for Blue Jasmine. Her previous win was for Actress in a Supporting Role for the 2004 film The Aviator. Blanchett also received leading actress nominations for Elizabeth (1998) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), and supporting actress nominations for Notes on a Scandal (2006) and I’m Not There (2007).

     

    Last year, Leto won the Oscar for Actor in a Supporting Role and McConaughey for Actor in a Leading Role, both for Dallas Buyer’s Club. Nyong’o took home the Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role for 12 Years a Slave.

     

    The Oscars will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and will be held on 22 February.

    Jennifer Lawrence named the most bankable star of 2014

    MUMBAI: Jennifer Lawrence’ blockbuster films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and X-Men: Days of Future Past have made a total of $1.4 billion in the box office.

     

    The success of these films has made the 24 year old actress the most bankable box office star of 2014, according to Forbes magazine.

     

    Lawrence was listed ahead of Chris Pratt and Scarlett Johansson on Forbes’ annual list, which assigns rankings based on the year’s most successful films and the actors who starred in them.

     

    Pratt came in second with a combined $1.2bn, thanks to the financial success of comic-book fantasy Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lego Movie, in which he provided the lead voice role.

     

    Johansson made it to the third spot with a total of $1.18bn after appearing in superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Lucy and Under the Skin.

    Scarlett Johansson to star in DreamWorks’ ‘Ghost in the Shell’

    MUMBAI: Scarlett Johansson has been signed on to star in DreamWorks’ upcoming venture, Ghost in the Shell.

     

    The actress, who received accolades for her action lead in Lucy, will feature in the anime-based, live-action thriller directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Bill Wheeler.

     

    Produced by Ari Arad and Steven Paul, Ghost in the Shell is based on the Japanese comic book of the same name. The plot is about the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

     

    Former DreamWorks executive Mark Sourian, will executive produce the movie, for which Johansson had reportedly, received an offer of US $10 million.

     

    Johansson’s upcoming film includes Avengers: Age of Ultron where she plays the Black Widow.

    MUMBAI: Scarlett Johansson is all set to star in a new period drama for her first major TV role. According to media reports, The Lucy actress will play the lead in a limited series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winner Edith Wharton’s classic 1913 novel The Custom of the Country.

     

    She has starred briefly in TV before, with stop-motion animated series Robot Chicken in 2005.

     

    The 29-year-old actress will be seen as a midwestern girl, Undine Spragg, who makes it her goal to reach the heights of New York high society by any means necessary in the early part of the 20th century in the series.

     

    According to the media reports, Johansson will also be the executive producer of the eight-episode period story.

     

    Besides Johansson, there is another big name attached to the project as Oscar-winning British playwright-screenwriter Christopher Hampton is on board to write the screenplay of the limited series.

     

    Johansson will next be seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, before starring in spin-off movie Black Widow and Disney’s live-action CGI remake of The Jungle Book.

     

    Meanwhile, Johansson has been busy juggling work and motherhood after the star gave birth to her first baby with fiancé Romain Dauriac on 4 Sept.

    MUMBAI: Filming of the sequel of Avengers Assemble will begin later this year with the film set to roll early next year.
     
    Though the film‘s plot and cast have not been revealed, but it will be written and directed by Joss Whedon, who had directed the first installment.
     
    Stars of the original who might return include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Chris Evans as Captain America.
     
    The film is scheduled for a 2015 release.

    MUMBAI: Jessica Biel will play actress Vera Miles in Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho. James D‘Arcy is being asked to join the cast to play the role of Anthony Perkins.

    The film has Anthony Hopkins playing Hitchcock while Helen Mirren will play his wife, Alma.

    It may be remembered that Miles played Lila Crane, the heroine of the 1960 horror classic who visits the Bates Motel in search of her missing sister Janet Leigh, the role to be portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.
