Star Bharat is dismayed by some reactions regarding a change at Savdhaan India

MUMBAI: Star India today issued its perspective in the form of a release on the exit of Sushant Singh as its anchor of the show Savdhaan India. Singh has raised doubts about his being evicted from the crime show because he participated in rallies against the Citizenship Amendment Act or because of budgetary constraints.

    The release goes as follows:

“Savdhaan India has frequently experimented with formats and has given a platform to different presenters in its 7 year journey. The existing presenter was brought back in October, 2019, with the contract ending in January, 2020. The next format of Savdhaan India did not require a presenter, and hence a new contract was not signed. The channel has no political views, nor does it seek to influence the political views of its contracted talent.”

  • The resurgence of horror shows on GECs

The resurgence of horror shows on GECs

MUMBAI: The horror genre has formed an important part of TV entertainment since the 1990s when Zee Horror Show, Aahat and Ssshhh…Koi Hai were anticipated shows. A resurgence of horror shows on TV has been noticed in the past one month. Ekta Kapoor’s Qayamat Ki Raat, which airs on Star Plus, and Colors TV’s Kaun Hai, both opened to incredible ratings in their first week. Vivek Dahiya and Karishma Tanna starrer Qayamat Ki Raat bagged the seventh spot with 5.6 million impressions while Kaun Hai received 3.89 million impressions and was at the 11th spot.

Bodhi Tree Multimedia has produced quite a few horror shows like Rooh and Fear Files for Zee TV. “Horror has always been a genre that has worked in the Indian market. It is also been an underserved genre with only our show Fear Files running for the past one year. So more horror shows coming was always anticipated,” says Bodhi Tree Multimedia founder Mautik Tolia.

Endemol Shine CEO Abhishek Rege holds a different opinion. He feels that the Indian audiences are dedicated to all sorts of genres and horror was possibly an underserved one. “Although many shows are launching, how many does the market need will only be known after the ratings or the consumption pattern comes out.”

If horror shows want to create a mark today, they have to come up with good content. Earlier horror shows used to have just one story in an episode. Now horror shows have long term stories with a supernatural background.

Earlier, late prime time was the slot given to the horror shows assuming that the kids are asleep by then. But now things are changing. The horror shows have got promoted to earlier time slots (7-9 pm). According to Rege, any time after 8-8.30 pm is a good time slot for a horror show. Shows like Aahat, Fear Files or X-Zone were hard core horror shows. Nowadays there are many shows which have different approaches and if they are not hardcore horror they can be broadcasted at early prime time slot.

Tolia thinks that the increase in the number of horror shows in India could be due to exposure to international content releasing in India. “A lot of good international horror has been produced over the past few years. Films from the Conjuring universe, Quiet Place, Lights Out, It, Mama and now Hereditary have breathed new life into the genre. So the rub off effect is surely being seen.”

Advertisers tend to stay away from horror shows due to their low viewership. The earlier shows couldn’t get advertisers due to the late time band. The sudden surge in horror seems to be the channels’ attempts at expanding its offering before festive season kicks in. They could then be replaced with reality format shows.

Madison Media Sigma CEO Vanita Keshwani feels differently. She says, “According to me, the crime/thriller genre works most for the Indian audience than the horror genre. Shows like Savdhaan India  and Crime Patrol garner more viewership than Aahat and Fear Files. Since shows like Qayamat Ki Raat, Laal Ishq and Kaun Hai have just launched it’s too early to give a judgment on those shows. According to me the horror as a genre is not doing well. But I think they are betting on it.”

Indian makers have even been plagued by budget issues and a very narrow approach towards the depiction of horror inspired by Indian imagery. However Indian horror is also seeing a paradigm shift in terms of quality of content over past few years. A new breed of filmmakers is churning out a spate of horror films and shows that are able to blend Indian imagery with great storytelling.

Even though the shows in this genre may or may not gain good TRP, the experimentation continues for adding variety to a channel’s offering.

  • ‘Savdhaan India’ axed overnight by Star Bharat

‘Savdhaan India’ axed overnight by Star Bharat

MUMBAI: Another shocking news from the television world is coming from the desk of TellyChakkar. According to our sources, popular crime show Savdhaan Indiais getting axed from Star Bharat.

A little birdie informs us that the GEC has given the final verdict to the producers today. The show is produced by eight different production houses. The GEC has asked the producers to stop shooting for the series.

Apparently, the reason behind the sudden shutdown is the criticism that the show is receiving due to poor execution of crime in the storyline. The decision was informed overnight, which led to a sudden uproar among the production houses. “The entire production unit, including the technicians and actors are jobless all of a sudden,” a source claimed.

Star Bharat has surprisingly been doing very well on the rating charts. Therefore, the channel is wasting no time to eliminate shows that are not doing well. Just within few months of its revamp, the GEC has already pulled off two shows–Aayushmann Bhava and Jai Kanhaiya Lal.

We couldn’t get through the channel spokesperson. While a source placed in the channel refuted the news, our credible sources confirm the development.

Accordingly, the shooting has stopped and only the episodes that have been shot will air. Now, it is uncertain whether the channel will rerun the old episodes or completely pull off the show.

The crime series is primarily hosted by Sushant Singh and has been hosted by guests such as Mohnish Behl, Pooja Gaur, Saurabh Raj Jain, Shivani Tomar, Hiten Tejwani, Divya Dutta and Siddharth Shukla.

Savdhaan India has been the longest-running Indian television series in terms of episode count. So, with the plug pulled out, a legacy comes to an end.

  • Crime reality shows maybe doing more harm than good

Crime reality shows maybe doing more harm than good

MUMBAI: The darker genres of storytelling such as thriller, crime and horror have hooked viewers for years. Though at times gory, viewers gulp down crime stories if they are crafted with an element of fun. But a rise in criminals imitating scenes from shows has led people to blame both Bollywood and TV shows, not for showing, but for inspiring real-life crimes in India.

There is a very thin line between spreading awareness and sensationalism when it comes to this genre. Though the concept may be appreciated, the negative impact is hardly taken into consideration.

When it comes to crime reality television, Sony airs Crime Patrol Dial 100, Crime Patrol Satark and Crime Patrol Dastak running at various time slots. Star Bharat is also deep into the genre with three related shows – Savdhaan India – India Fights Back, Savdhaan India – Darr kar nahi datt kar and Savdhaan India – Kisse Anokhe.

Recent cases of a brother killing his own sister and mother, or a boyfriend killing his girlfriend, are manifestations of fast-changing and deteriorating mental streaks in which these crimes have lost value. Their conscience isn’t disturbed by their act because they are used to it and the psyche is immune to others’ pain.

The positive side isn’t to be ignored. They bring to light various common crimes occurring across the country and enable their audience to be wary of similar happenings. Moreover, they help reaffirm people’s belief in the police system and encourage them to report crimes. Another major learning for viewers is to be cautious while employing domestic help and being alert to their surroundings.

According to Psychologist Dr Sanjoy Mukerji if a person wants to be happy, peaceful and positive in life, they have to focus more on the positive things then the negative things. “Crime reality shows bring an addiction and negativity to the people,” he says adding that they also have a positive impact by reinforcing belief in the police.

Counselling psychologist Rashi Laskari says that while show makers have the right intentions, the content ends up having a negative impact on some people. “Sensitive individuals, more so children or the elderly, are unable to see this reality as occasional, and start perceiving the world to be a bad place in general, which takes away their trust from their surroundings, making them experience intense negative emotions.”

Laskari adds, “We often see cases where individuals have developed a fear of moving around safely, as they imagine themselves in the role of the victim. This is also seen with children and teenagers, when they watch abusive behaviour on television, they absorb it as real, and either pick negative traits or become very scared and show changes in their behaviour.”

Psychiatrist Dr Rajiv Anand says that people look for excitement from their own and others’ lives. “So, whenever they hear any story concerning crime in other peoples’ lives, their antennae are alert. Human minds get swallowed into sensationalism. It begins simply as a kick but then it becomes a habit and they get dependent on the supply.”

When the mind is repeatedly bombarded with same crime stories, viewers live with them, visualise them, dream oft hem and form an obsession. This leads to a desire to experiment.

Laskari, while sharing her experiences, says that she has seen a case where grandparents would watch Saavdhaan India on a regular basis, and would believe the dramatic representation to be true. She says, “As a result of it, they would talk to the grandchild every day about the ‘bad’ that happens in the world, and instil a fear in the child’s mind about bad people and the harm they can cause. As a result, the child became fearful of everything- such as playing with friends, going to the washroom alone, answering the doorbell and many more things.”

These shows also instil fear in people. Dr Mukerji says he has seen people complaining of anxiety due to the shows. He added, “Women say that their husbands are scared to leave them alone at home.”

Shows tend to desensitise people to crime. Therefore, sometimes, even if a murder takes place in front of their eyes, people will take photographs rather than take preventative action. Viral videos of crimes are spreading and breaking down the wall between the real and virtual.

In the year 2016, the average per episode viewership of Crime Patrol was 1.6 million impressions, Crime Patrol Dastak was 1.3 million impressions, Crime Patrol Dial 100 was 1.8 million impressions and Crime Patrol Satark was 1.7 million impressions per episode, from 6 pm to 12 am. However, Savdhaan India garnered 2.5 million average impressions per episode during the peak hours.

In the year 2017, the average per episode viewership of Savdhaan India was 2.8 million impressions, Savdhaan India- India Fights Back was 0.8 million impressions per episode, Savdhaan India- Kisse Anokhe was 2.0 million impressions per episode, Crime Patrol Dial 100 was 1.8 million impressions per episode and Crime Patrol Satark was 1.8 million impressions per episode between 6 pm to 12 am.

As the ratings show, the popularity of crime shows is far from dwindling. They hold steady and broadcasters are creating sub genres within the crime genre. Despite the warnings that television shows advising people to only consider them as dramatic representations, people absorb them as real events. Whether entertainment or a mirror to reality, crime shows are here to stay for now.

Amirzada Nawab Khan’s story to be telecast on Zee Yuva

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Police, one of the potent police forces in India, has come a long way from the decade of 80s when it lacked training & high-end precision weapons which is the norm of late. That decade was marked with the rise in crime and police’s main weapon were their networking skills with informers.

One of the most dreaded criminal who rose to infamy in this period was Amirzada Navab Khan who had a flourishing narcotics business. This period marked the terror of Amirzada’s ‘Pathan’ gang. The gang was famous for the fear that it commanded over the common masses. Numerous cases were registered against them but only a handful of eyewitnesses were ready to testify.

One brave police officer Isaque Bagwan from the crime branch team rose to fame when the case of Mushirbhai who was the producer of Dilip Kumar’s movie ‘Shakti’ was kidnapped. The subsequent ransom demand & release from the clutches of the Pathan gang raised many questions on the capability & integrity of Maharashtra Police. This case was handed over to Bagwan. Through his strong network of informants, he managed to nab Amirzada & his partners who were part of the crime.

This case was not an easy task for Bagwan as he had to ensure that the trial of Amirzada comes to its logical conclusion. Amirzada on being brought for trial was shot by a shooter in the courtroom. Bagwan’s sharp presence of mind resulted in apprehending the shooter by pulling the trigger & shooting him in the leg, one of the first in–court shooting incidents. This saved the pride of many including the lady justice who was presiding on the case.

This spine-chilling case will unfold on Zee Yuva’s new show Shaurya – Gatha Abhimanachi this Friday & Saturday at 9pm. This story truly embodies the spirit of Maharashtra Police.
