    MUMBAI: Prime Video India has rolled out the red carpet for film buffs, announcing the launch of ‘NFDC – Cinemas of India’ as an add-on subscription, priced at just Rs 199 per year. The collection is a goldmine of Indian cinema, featuring landmark films by the likes of Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Mira Nair, Kalpana Lajmi, and more.

    The newly added bouquet includes cinematic heavyweights like Gandhi, Mirch Masala, Rudaali, Salaam Bombay!, Agantuk, and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda — all carefully curated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), known for nurturing India’s parallel cinema movement.

    Govt policies to help media & entertainment ecosystem to generate $53 billion annually by 2025: Anurag Thakur

    MUMBAI: In the next five years, India will be among the leading quality content producing nations across the globe. The government policies to help the media and entertainment ecosystem to generate $53 billion annually by 2025. There is an old rush amongst broadcasters as well as telcos to set up their own OTT platforms for India. The Indian government will take all measures to speed up co-production collaborations from around the world. The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said this while addressing the India Forum at the famous Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

    The session was moderated by Indian producer, Central Board of Film Certification member and film personality Vani Tripathi Pikoo; Ministry of Information And Broadcasting secretary Apurva Chandra; writer, poet and Central Board of Film Certification chairman Prasoon Joshi; Indian actor, writer, director and producer R Madhavan; Indian filmmaker actor, television presenter and entrepreneur and Film and Television Institute of India chairman Shekhar Kapur; Hollywood Reporter editor Scott Roxborough and producer Philip Avril.

    This year marks the 75th year of celebration of both the Cannes Film Festival and the establishment of India-France diplomatic relations. Speaking on the importance of Cannes Thakur said that over the years, ‘Festival de Cannes’ has played a significant role in strengthening Indo-French relations.

    The minister noted historic highs of Indian cinema and said that Indian content has been ruling the hearts and minds of the global audience and the stepping stone was laid by bestowing the Palme d’Or to the prolific Indian filmmaker Chetan Anand’s film Neecha Nagar in 1946 and a decade later in 1956, Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali won the Palme d’Or.

    Today the recognition of our cinematic excellence the world over is set to manifest the country into the ‘content hub of the world’, the Minister added.

    Speaking on India’s current presence in Cannes, the Minister said “India intends to give you – the global audience, a flavour of the country’s cinematic excellence, technological prowess, rich culture and illustrious heritage of storytelling. India’s red carpet presence captured the diversity of our cinematic excellence not only in terms of representation of actors and film-makers from various languages and regions but also on OTT platforms, with a strong presence of music composers and folk artists who have enthralled audiences both young and old”.

    The Minister informed the audience about the presence of Indian startups in Cannes and said the startups from the media and entertainment sector will showcase their technological prowess and pitch to the best from the world of AVGC along with a strong delegation of animation professionals from the sector.

    The Minister informed the audience of the various measures by both the Union and State governments and said while the Center has envisioned major initiatives over the last eight years to boost co-productions, film shoots and film facilitations in India, States like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have formulated their film facilitation policies and provided co-production opportunities. He stated that these efforts aimed at boosting India’s media and entertainment ecosystem, which is expected to generate $53 billion annually by 2025.

    In one such measure, he said, “The government officially designated audiovisual services as one of 12 ‘champion service sectors’ and recently set up an AVGC task force comprising of industry leaders to prepare a policy roadmap for India to take a quantum leap in this sector and position us as the preferred ‘post-production hub of the world’ “.

    Thakur added that on one hand artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and immersive technologies such as the metaverse, present immense possibilities to India’s IT skilled workforce, the OTT market in India is predicted to grow by 21 per cent annually to nearly $2 billion by 2024 on the other.

    The minister promised that the government will take all necessary measures to transform India into a ‘Global Content Sub Continent’ and use the skills of our youth to make India the preferred post-production hub for the AVGC sector and to that end government will speed up co-production collaborations from around the world and also offer the best locations in India for Film Shoots. These Thakur envisioned, will in the next five years, catapult Bharat into the league of leading quality content producing nations across the globe.

    Thakur concluded his statement by extending a warm invitation to shoot in India, bask in its hospitality and relish its landscape.

    Meanwhile, Kapur spoke about the effect of access to cheap broadband and mobile devices having a disruptive effect on movie industry and said that India is about to become the world’s biggest ‘influencer economy’ and that cinema will soon be redefined by the young film makers.

    “India is a pool of restless dreams, dreams that are restless to make it big, of looking forward”, said Prasoon Joshi to the comment Kapur. Joshi further added that India has more and more self-belief, and that it shows in terms of the quality of recent cinematic productions. “When a civilisation can express its core authentically, he argued, it becomes even stronger,” he said.

    Chandra cited movies like “Lunchbox”, “Mr and Mrs Iyer” and “Rocketry” that are typically Indian in their story but have resonated with audiences across the world. He further reiterated the incentives announced by the government for filmmakers from across the world.

    Madhavan commented on how India has so much to tell the world in the field of science and technology and the cinema world must explore this idea. From Aryabhatta to Sundar Pichai India has extraordinary stories which are aspirations of youngsters around the world. Madhvan also argued that the advance of new technologies is offering new opportunities to the cinema industry. He reminded the audience that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the micro economy has grown spectacularly; he suggested that digitalisation will offer new avenues to shine for Indian cinema.

    Avril who has worked in the past with Tamil and Malayalam movies, applauded the move, which he labelled as significant. He further commented that India has immense talent and extraordinary potential in terms of story-telling but that cultural barriers can sometimes prevent stories to reach foreign audiences. To ensure that Indian stories are not lost in translation and effectively reach foreign audiences, Avril noted the importance of encouraging co-production across countries, which is precisely the strategy of the government.

    Cannes 2022: India to be official ‘country of honour’ at Cannes Marche’ Du Film

    Mumbai: India will be the official country of honour at the upcoming Marche’ Du Film organised alongside the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in France, announced union minister of information and broadcasting Anurag Thakur on Wednesday.

     “It is the first time the Marché du Film has an official country of honour, and this special focus will continue annually with different nations in the spotlight at future editions,”  Thakur said.

    Notably, France and India are also marking 75 years of their diplomatic ties. Prime minister Narendra Modi recently visited Paris to meet with president Emmanuel Macron.

    As a country of honour, India’s cinema, culture and heritage will come under the spotlight during the opening night of Marche Du Films being organised by the Majestic Beach. There will be special performances by Indian choir bands along with folk music and fireworks. The cuisine served will be Indian as well as French.

    The I&B minister also announced five new startups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the audio-visual industry at Cannes Next, a business development platform. Ten professionals will participate in the animation day networking.

    The Cannes Film Festival will also feature the premiere of the movie “Rocketry” produced by R Madhavan. The film will be showcased at the Palais des Festivals on 19 May.

    India has pitched five films under the ‘Goes to Cannes Section’ including “Baghjan” by Jaicheng Zxai Dohutia (Assamese, Moran), “Bailadila” by Shailendra Sahu (Hindi, Chhatisgarhi), “Ek Jagah Apni” by Ektara Collective (Hindi), “Follower” by Harshad Nalawade (Marathi, Kannada, Hindi), “Shivamma” by Jai Shankar (Kannada).

    A cinema hall called the ‘Olympia Screen’ has been dedicated to India on 22 May for the screening of unreleased movies under which five films have been selected.

    The festival will also screen Satyajit Ray classic “Pratidwandi’ in celebration of the centenary of the Bengali director at the Cannes Classic section Cinéma de la plage.

    A dedicated India forum i.e., a one-hour conference is being organised at the main stage, comprising leaders in the entertainment sector to discuss ‘India as the content hub of the world’. The forum will be streamed online.

    The minister also noted that the India Pavilion at the festival will have the sole focus on branding India as the ‘content hub of the world.’ The pavilion will be inaugurated on 18 May and will showcase Indian cinema across linguistic, cultural and regional diversities of the country and will serve as a networking platform for delegates from across the global community, aiming to establish international partnerships in film shooting, distribution, production, script development, technology, promoting film sales and syndication.

    Mumbai: Amazon Prime Video has unveiled its lineup for the 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa from 20 November. This includes the world premiere of Amazon original film “Chhorii” on 25 November and multiple masterclasses and interactive panels with the country’s creative stalwarts.

    For the first time in its history, IFFI is inviting video streaming platforms to the festival.

    On 21 November, a masterclass session on ‘Creating Cult Icons’ will be led by the cast and crew of Amazon original series “The Family Man” including Raj and DK, Amazon Prime Video’s head India originals Aparna Purohit, Samantha Ruth, and Manoj Bajpayee (virtually).

    On 23 November, a masterclass session on ‘Creating Cinematic Success and Storytelling of Sardar Udham’ will be led by Shoojit Sircar and Ronnie Lahiri.

    Prime Video will also showcase Satyajit Ray’s evergreen films on the homepage of their website between 20-28 November to commemorate the filmmaker’s birth centenary. This will include 11 of his iconic films – “Abhijan,” “Aparajito,” “Ashani Sanket,” “Chiriakhana,” “Hirak Rajar Deshe,” “Pather Panchali,” “Seemabaddha,” “Sonar Kella,” “Shatranj Ke Khilari,” “Charulata,” and “Jalsaghar.” The platform will also stream “Satyajit Ray Through His Films,” a documentary presented by Soumitra Chatterjee.

    “We are honoured to be a part of IFFI, an event that celebrates the diversity and rich cinematic heritage of India, and brings the entertainment community, content creators and talent together,” said Amazon Prime Video India country head Gaurav Gandhi. “We will continue to contribute actively to the entertainment ecosystem of India by promoting local narratives that are deeply rooted in Indian culture while delivering an immersive entertainment experience to viewers.”

    Mumbai: Warner Music Group India has made its first Bengali acquisition by acquiring worldwide sales and distribution rights of the much-awaited film, “Avijatrik – The Wanderlust Of Apu.” The film is produced by Gaurang Films & Bhandarkar Entertainment and co-presented by NCKS Explorations.

    “Avijatrik” is a unique film with a rich legacy & soulful music, with the enduring and endearing character of ‘Apu’ is all set to return after 60 years to the big screens on 3 December. It is a sequel to the classic “Apu Trilogy,” directed by Satyajit Ray & BG score by Pt Ravi Shankar.

    The plot takes off from where “The Apu Trilogy” had ended in 1959 with “Apur Sansar.” The story revolves around a sublime bond between a father (Apu) and his six-year-old son (Kajol). The film has explored a beautiful tapestry of pure interpersonal relationships to recreate the magic of Apu– sharing adventures with his beloved son, Kajol and is directed by Subhrajit Mitra. “Avijatrik” has been shot in B&W with an ensemble of experienced cast and crew at 68 locations to retain the rich aesthetic flavour that compliments its backdrop of 1940’s India. It stars Arjun Chakrabarty (as Apu), Ditipriya Roy, Arpita Chatterjee, and Sabyasachi Chakrabarty in key roles.

    The music of this film is by the internationally acclaimed exponent of the Indian classical genre Pt Bickram Ghosh and the title track is a variation by Anoushka Shankar, of her father Pt Ravi Shankar’s iconic “Pather Panchali” theme. “I am happy to be a part of Avijatrik as a small tribute to my father,” commented Anoushka.

    The film has traveled to 32 film festivals worldwide, garnering multiple accolades. Pt Bickram Ghosh has already received two awards for Best Music for his beautiful compositions & BG score at the Montreal Independent Film Festival, Canada, and Caleidoscope Indian Film Festival of Boston USA. “The music of Avijatrik is very special for me, as is the validation of it by Chinamma (Smt Sukaya Shankar Ji). The plan was to bring back traditional instruments, the soundscape of the ’40s, the best of the raga culture, and folk music. I am honoured that I got this project and feel grateful for the awards,” said Pt Bickram Ghosh.

    The trailer of Avijatrik is also creating waves and has already had nearly 800,000 views so far.

    Speaking about this alliance with WMI, producer Gaurang Jalan stated, “Team Avijatrik is delighted with this association and hopes that music of this film will travel far and wide with their global experience& leadership.”

    Mirchi launches new show ‘Sunday Suspense Hindi’

    Mumbai: Music and entertainment company Mirchi has launched its new show “Mirchi Sunday Suspense Hindi.” The radio show presents dramatic readings from Indian literature across suspense, crime, horror genres and it airs every Sunday between 3 p.m and 4 p.m on Radio Mirchi.

    The forty-minute-long show will be aired in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, North Bengaluru, and Mangalore, as well as in international markets including UAE and the USA. It will also be available to stream on Spotify, along with two other Mirchi IPs – “Sunday Suspense Bangla” and “Calling Karan: Season 1 and 2,” said the company in a statement.

    The show features famous stories by celebrated authors namely, Satyajit Ray, Conan Doyle, and Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, bringing to life their works through a play of sounds, music, and background scores, it added.

    NEW DELHI: The grant-in-aid for Prasar Bharati has come down marginally from the revised estimates from Rs 4500 million in 2016-17 to Rs 4300 million for 2017-18.

    This includes a grants-in-aid to the pubcaster of Rs 3500 million and a separate grant-in-aid to it for the Kisan Channel of Rs 800 million which is higher than last year’s Rs 600 million.

    In addition, there is support of Rs 29,967 million for 2017-18 against Rs 27,168.6 million in 2016-17 in the allocation of support to autonomous bodies. But, there is no investment in the head of public sector undertakings in Prasar Bharati, unlike last year.

    An explanatory note says the grants-in-aid is being provided to cover the gap in resources of Prasar Bharati in meeting its revenue expenditure.

    (Expenditure on salaries of Prasar Bharati has fallen on the shoulders of the government since all Prasar Bharati employees who were in employment as on 5 October 2007 have been given deemed deputation status.)

    The total budget of the information and broadcasting ministry has been raised to Rs 44,090 million against Rs 40836.3 million.

    There is a separate allocation of Rs 230 million for strengthening broadcasting activities which covers community radio (Rs 40 million), Electronic Media Centre (Rs 120 million), Mission Digitisation (Rs 50 million) and automation of broadcasting wing (Rs 20 million).

    This is less than last year’s allocation in this head of Rs 308.3 million.

    The allocation for the film sector has been raised to Rs 2070 million, and covers the National Museum of Cinema, Development communication and Dissemination of filmic content, Infrastructure Development Programme relating to the film sector, and Mission/Special projects which gets a massive increase to Rs 1100.1 million as compared to Rs 170.1 million last year. This allocation is for the Umbrella Programme Missions / Special Project includes the following Schemes:

    National Film Heritage Mission (Main Secretariat), Anti-Piracy Initiatives and Setting up a National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Gaming and Special Effects (coming up in Mumbai).

    There is an allocation of Rs 180 million for mass communication which includes upgradation of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication to international standards and opening regional centres of IIMC.

    The allocation under ‘Secretariat – Social services’ has been raised Rs 795.2 million as compared to Rs 703.2 million, and art and culture to Rs 102.3 million. information and publicity gets Rs 4059.9 million for various programmes which include Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity; Press Information Bureau, Field Publicity, Song and Drama Division, Publications Division, Photo Division, Registrar of Newspapers in India and other media units.

    After seven years in a row, the government has announced investment in the National Film Development Corporation to the tune of Rs 125.4 million.

    There is a marginal increase in the lump sum provision for projects/schemes for development of North-eastern areas including Sikkim to Rs 842 million against Rs 800 million last year.

    There is an allocation of Rs 30,732.6 million as support to autonomous bodies which apart from Prasar Bharati, also has allocations for the Film and Television Institute of India, Satyajit Ray FTII, Press Council of India, IIMC, and Children’s Film Society, India.

    (Expenditure on salaries of Prasar Bharati has fallen on the shoulders of the government since all Prasar Bharati employees who were in employment as on 5 October 2007 have been given deemed deputation status.)

    The total budget of the information and broadcasting ministry has been raised to Rs 44,090 million against Rs 40836.3 million.

    There is a separate allocation of Rs 230 million for strengthening broadcasting activities which covers community radio (Rs 40 million), Electronic Media Centre (Rs 120 million), Mission Digitisation (Rs 50 million) and automation of broadcasting wing (Rs 20 million).

    This is less than last year’s allocation in this head of Rs 308.3 million.

    The allocation for the film sector has been raised to Rs 2070 million, and covers the National Museum of Cinema, Development communication and Dissemination of filmic content, Infrastructure Development Programme relating to the film sector, and Mission/Special projects which gets a massive increase to Rs 1100.1 million as compared to Rs 170.1 million last year. This allocation is for the Umbrella Programme Missions / Special Project includes the following Schemes:

    National Film Heritage Mission (Main Secretariat), Anti-Piracy Initiatives and Setting up a National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Gaming and Special Effects (coming up in Mumbai).

    There is an allocation of Rs 180 million for mass communication which includes upgradation of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication to international standards and opening regional centres of IIMC.

    The allocation under ‘Secretariat – Social services’ has been raised Rs 795.2 million as compared to Rs 703.2 million, and art and culture to Rs 102.3 million. information and publicity gets Rs 4059.9 million for various programmes which include Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity; Press Information Bureau, Field Publicity, Song and Drama Division, Publications Division, Photo Division, Registrar of Newspapers in India and other media units.

    After seven years in a row, the government has announced investment in the National Film Development Corporation to the tune of Rs 125.4 million.

    There is a marginal increase in the lump sum provision for projects/schemes for development of North-eastern areas including Sikkim to Rs 842 million against Rs 800 million last year.

    There is an allocation of Rs 30,732.6 million as support to autonomous bodies which apart from Prasar Bharati, also has allocations for the Film and Television Institute of India, Satyajit Ray FTII, Press Council of India, IIMC, and Children’s Film Society, India.
