    ‘School Chale Hum’, Nestle prompts girls

    MUMBAI: Nestle India has recreated the iconic song, School Chale Hum, originally produced by Bharatbala. Through this song, Nestle India aims to draw support towards the corporate social initiative, #EducateTheGiriChild in association with Nanhi Kali, one of the largest NGOs imparting education to underprivileged girl children across India.

    School Chale Hum was initially composed in 2006 in support of the Indian government programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and was produced by BharatBala Productions. ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’ aims at boosting the objective of universalisation of elementary education. However, the situation continues to be grim with 20 million girls still dropping out of school each year. Nestle India decided to bring some of the most renowned names in the industry to re-interpret the song to support girl child education.

    The musical trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy put together a new music composition along with lyricist Anvita Dutt and singer Harshdeep Kaur. Their intention has been to give the original composition, a new life. Young girls from the Nanhi Kali programme, the partners for this corporate initiative also participated by singing the song along with the lead singer.

    Nestle India chairman and managing director Suresh Narayanan said, “Music is one of the most powerful and influential means of uniting people for a cause. This song represents the collective societal objective to spread awareness and evangelize support for the cause.” The composers team said, “Education is the way forward for progress.”

    Bharat Bala said, “We need to do everything we can to make quality education an immediate reality for every girl child across the country. Let’s come together to give a voice to our youngest and most curious minds.”

    Zee to extend language subtitles on channels to support educational initiative

    MUMBAI: Quality education is the right of every child. Keeping this in mind, Zee Entertainment, in association with USAID, PlanetRead and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is planning to extend its Same Language Subtitling (SLS) initiative across more of its regional channels. Two years back, the SLS initiative was launched on Zee Talkies and Zee Marathi with the aim to improve the basic functional reading competency of children in Maharashtra. 

     

    The initiative is in line with the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) – ‘Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat’.

     

    Speaking on this initiative Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) MD & CEO Punit Goenka said, “Television, being an effective medium of mass communication, is an excellent platform for children to improve their reading skills. We, at Zee, had undertaken this pilot project of Same Language Subtitling on our regional channels, Zee Talkies and Zee Marathi with the objective of improving literacy in children in Maharashtra. Over the span of two years, SLS has been activated for songs in over 250 frequently aired movies in our library. Seeing the successful results of this study, we plan to extend this project to our other channels as well.”

     

    IIM Ahmedabad and co-author of the SLS report Brij Kothari stated, “In the pilot project, for nearly two years, from June 2013 to May 2015, Same Language Subtitling was added on all the songs of 10 weekly Marathi movies telecast in prime time on Zee Talkies. The song-subtitled movies were further repeat-telecast in other slots on Zee Talkies and Zee Marathi. Together, this resulted in an unprecedented scale up of SLS in Maharashtra, far more than the project had even planned for or anticipated. The study has shown tremendous impact on school children’s reading skills, especially in Classes 1-3, with the results showing 10 to 14 per cent more children becoming good readers in each grade.”

     

    Conceived in 1996, SLS is simply the idea of subtitling mainstream TV content in the “same” language as the audio. What you hear is what you read. Several research studies have found that SLS causes automatic and inescapable reading engagement among viewers. Especially on song-based content, regular SLS exposure is known to contribute to reading skill improvement.

    CN gets on to DD with a branded block

    NEW DELHI: Not content with ruling the kids’ space in India via satellite, Cartoon Network now wants a slice of terrestrial viewership too.

    It announced has just a new one-hour programming block, Cartoon Network Duniya, on Doordarshan National.

    Starting 8 July, the new block will air every Saturday from 10:30 am to 11:30 a.m. and will feature two of Turner’s most popular and highly successful original productions, M.A.D. (Music, Art and Dance show) and Codename: Kids Next Door.

    Cartoon Network Duniya will also showcase other popular series, including Turner’s most awaited original production, Galli Galli Sim Sim, the Indian version of globally renowned pre-school series, Sesame Street.

    “Doordarshan’s extensive reach across India will enable kids in non-C&S homes to enjoy Turner’s engaging original production that has so far been limited to C&S homes. In the preliminary stage, the highly rated M.A.D. and popular animation series, Codename: Kids Next Door will serve as the perfect introduction to new viewers,” an official statement quoted Turner International India MD Anshuman Misra as saying yesterday.

    Misra added that later in the year Galli Galli Sim Sim will further enhance the appeal by showcasing content that is both educational and entertaining in nature.

    M.A.D. is an off-the-wall, interactive journey for 8-12 years olds and their families and is filled with fun tabletop ‘makes’, dynamic performances, a bit of humour and some art stunts.

    Galli Galli Sim Sim is an initiative undertaken by globally recognised, Sesame Workshop and Indian kids’ entertainment leader, Turner India.

    The show is aimed at serving the 157 million children under the age of six in India and is committed to supporting India’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan or universal access to education.
