    Baar Baar Dekho…Akhir Kyon?

    MUMBAI: Baar Baar Dekho, the debut directorial venture of Nitya Mehra, is a love story that spans over three decades. The makers seem to have found the basic idea from the Hollywood film, Groundhog Day (1995). Here, the idea has been used for a couple about to marry.

    Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif are born in England around the same time and their parents also decide to move back to India almost at the same time. Katrina and Sidharth meet at school and become close pals at eight. Love blossoms as they grow.

    Sidharth is a gifted mathematician while Katrina’s calling is modern art. Their love is boundless and both families are agreeable. It is time to get them to commit to each other and an engagement ceremony takes place. Sidharth is however not sure he wants to get married at that point in time. His first love is mathematics and he wants to prove himself as a math genius all over the world. At the time he was committing to Katrina, his research paper to Cambridge has been appreciated and he is invited to join the faculty.

    While Sidharth is a middleclass man who believes in making it big on his own, his would-be father-in-law, Ram Kapoor, gifts him a car and a plush flat. This puts him off further. He has an argument with Katrina to the extent that he offends her. To escape things happening around him, he hits the bottle.

    His future travel with wife Katrina is what most of this film is about. Sidharth’s life revolves round his job with little or no time for the family. His mind is so taken up by research, he is unable to connect well with his children when he meets them after gaps. Katrina expresses her displeasure with what is happening to her family life. And, to Sidharth’s discomfort, Kapoor moves in with the family to provide support to Katrina.

    Sidharth’s time with his family is like a long lost relative coming back after ages. On one occasion, he is called when his mother dies. There, he realizes that his divorced wife Katrina has remarried!

    Baar Baar Dekho is a kind of long-winding sermon to men and women planning marriage, and life thereafter. There is just about everything that is going wrong with the film. It starts with the scripting which jumps from one point to another failing to keep the audience informed.
    Sidharth’s ‘amnesia’ is least convincing. The film is beyond the director’s control soon after it takes off. The futuristic approach with communication, be it cell phone or computer, serves no purpose; even the makeup of the aged phase of the actors looks amateur.

    The film has some good songs playing in the background but don’t register as one is trying to figure out the events in the story. The popular number, Kala chashma…., is left for the end titles by which time the viewer has lost the will to stay back. Editing is sorely missing. The only thing that works for the film is the visuals. It is a beautifully shot film.
    Baar Baar Dekho is a grossly disappointing film.

    MUMBAI: Its official! Renowned actress Sarika and veteran film director Jahnu Barua will head the two Film Juries at the 7 Jagran Film Festival, this year.

    With over 90 films behind her, Sarika will head a five Member Indian Feature Film Jury for the Festival’s prestigious section, Indian Showcase.  One of the most sought after sections of the festival, Indian Showcase stands apart for its class and presentation of awards. In the past few years, the Best feature Film Award has been presented to Marathi and Bengali language films. The best actor award last year was presented to Dulal Sarkar, an actor who is a midget.

    Sarika who began her film career as a Child Artist in the film Majhhli Didi (The Middle Sister-1967) a Dharmendra-Meena Kumari starrer went on to make it big with films like Geet Gaata Chal, Khushboo (1975), Jaani Dushman (1979), Kranti (1981), Satte Pe Satta (1982), Razia Sultan (1983), Raj Tilak (1984) and lately Parzania (2005) and many others. Recipient of two National Film Awards Sarika made her television debut in Sony TV’s Yudh which stars Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. The Jury headed by her will decide on 16 awards in the feature film category.

    Padma Bhushan Jahnu Barua is one of India’s foremost Film Directors winning ten National Film Awards. Mostly making his films in Assamese language, Jahnu dabbled into Hindi film making with Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara (I did not kill Gandhi) and Mumbai Cutting. Winner of several international awards, Jahnu Barua will head a three Member International Film Jury.  The Jury for Shorts will watch 50 short films to decide on three international awards in the category.

    1 July in New Delhi will present Cuba as the focus country at this year’s edition. As part of this initiative, the festival will present a 5-7 film package at the Festival. The films presented will travel to 16 cities of India with the festival.

    Speaking on the partnership, Ambassador of Republic of Cuba Oscar J. Martinez Cordovés said,” Its indeed a matter of pride for us to partner with the largest travelling film festival in the world and take Cuban Cinema to so many cities in India. What we would be presenting to the people of India through this partnership is not just our films but a glimpse into our culture, history and contemporary life. I am glad we got this opportunity through Jagran Prakashan and thank them’. “

    The Festival each year presents the Cinema of a country. The past years have seen the Cinemas of South Korea, Cyprus and the United States presented in the past editions of the festival. The 7 edition of Jagran Film Festival gets underway at New Delhi’s Siri Fort Auditoria from July 1, 2016 and after travelling through 14 cities will reach Mumbai for the Finale on 26 September 2016.

    Sony bets big with Big B’s ‘Yudh’

    NEW DELHI: After actor Anil Kapoor hit the small screen with the limited episode series  ‘24’, megastar Amitabh Bachchan is all set to launch himself as an actor on television with the series ‘Yudh’ commencing on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) next month.

     

    While ‘24’ on Colors was confined to just 24 episodes, Bachchan’s series will run for 20 episodes.

     

    Though the telecast schedule is not out yet, the series is expected to be aired at prime time from Monday to Thursday. Bachchan’s ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ is also slated to commence around the same time.

     

    ‘Yudh’ also stars senior actress Sarika along with Aahana Kumra, Pavail Gulati, Avinash Tiwari, Nawazuddin Siddique, Kay Kay Menon and Tigmanshu Dhulia among others.

     

    Bachchan revealed that he had approached the channel with the aim of doing a television series, after which he had been put in touch with Endemol. Though he had taken on Anurag Kashyap as the creative director, Shoojit Sircar also joined in as creative director. Bachchan’s Saraswati Creations is also a co-producer of the new show.

     

    The thespian said in reply to a question that the story of any film or TV series is of prime importance, followed by the director who is the captain. The actors were only puppets who followed the directives of the director.

     

    He denied that he was ever satisfied with what he had done or achieved. “Feeling satisfied is like ‘death’ for any creative artiste,” he said, adding it was erroneous to think that a senior actor did not need much preparation. “I take every performance as a new test,” added Bachchan.

     

    “Working on a TV series is a unique experience, compared to the big screen,” Bachchan said, revealing the first poster of the serial.

     

    “I would be prepared to work on television again if I get the right story and a good chance,” he added.

     

    The story revolves around a businessman who suffers from an incurable disease but does not want to reveal it to his family.

     

    Sarika, who has appeared on screen with Bachchan for the fourth time and the second time since her return to Bollywood said, “Working with him was always a novel experience as he helps the other artistes and puts them at ease.”

     

    “The series is different from the work I have done so far on the big screen,” she added.

     

    The series has been made like a movie on the small screen.  “It is like a film shown in episodes,” said Kashyap and Sircar.  “All the stereotypes that TV series have so far been associated with have been avoided,” informed Kashyap.

     

    MSM CEO N P Singh said that the marketing of the series will not be done through the normal route and there would be no hoardings. Apart from the promos on TV and use of social media like Facebook, there would be ground events in various cities where he expected Bachchan and other stars to be present.

     

    Informing about the on-ground activities, Singh said, “The next event is at the Bombay Stock Exchange.” When asked for the reason, he said the series has Bachchan as the head of a construction business empire with around 10,000 employees and “therefore it is appropriate to release the poster at the BSE.”

     

    Not revealing the exact marketing spent, Singh informed that 50 per cent of the total expenses reserved for the series were aimed to be spent after the completion of the entire shooting.

     

    “The expenditure on the series is the highest ever for a fiction show which is close to 200 times more than the normal expenses,” informed Singh.

     

    The series will be aired only after the entire shoot is complete. Singh said that while talks were on with sponsors and advertisers, “Cadbury has a special bond with Bachchan and is on board as title sponsor.” He admitted that the advertising tariff will be somewhat higher than the normal series as it demanded a premium rate as compared to other shows.

     

    MSM senior EVP and business head Nachiket Pantvaidya  informed that the entire shooting had taken five to six weeks during which 20 hours of filming was done.   

     

    He said that the series hoped to break new ground as far as advertisers were concerned as the channel was now being seen in more than 70 countries and could also be accessed on the app that came free.

    ‘Purani Jeans’ Review: Purani Story

    MUMBAI: This one is a love triangle and, like most love triangles, it has a forced script of convenience in which people don’t own up to the things they are supposed to when they should or create a situation where he is on the verge but something keeps him from doing so. Love triangles thrive on silence.

    Tanuj Virwani and Aditya Seal are childhood friends in the hill station cantonment town of Kasauli. With three other friends they make a bunch of five, nicknamed Kasauli Cowboys who celebrate life together. It is summer time and the town gets its due share of holidaymakers. While at the railway station to receive Aditya, who is returning from UK after finishing his studies, Tanuj bumps into pretty and petite Izabelle Leite causing her to spill things from her baggage. Izabelle, along with her sister, has come to spend her holidays in her ancestral home. It is a small town and it is not long before they meet again at a music shop. Love blossoms. But that is not the end of their love story.

    Aditya’s love is music and his dream is to one day cut an album. He forms an impromptu band with the Kasauli Cowboys to perform at the local summer mela. That is where Aditya eyes Izabelle and it is love at first sight for him. Love is something he has always been deprived of. His father died when he was a child, his mother is always high on alcohol and he can’t stand his stepfather who is cheating on his mother.

    Izabelle realises what is happening. She loves Tanuj and wants him to clear things with Aditya as she sees him becoming obsessed with her. Somehow, Tanuj never gathers the courage to do that and it is strange because in love triangles the one whom the girl loves is always the underdog, under much obligations of the other man. Here, Tanuj has no such obligations and no reason to act like a subordinate to Aditya which he does all through the film. However, Izabelle distances herself from Aditya.

    The summer mela has helped two other friends to find girlfriends, one of which is Kashika Chopra. When she becomes pregnant and the one of the five, Param Baidwan, leaves her high and dry and even leaves the group, Aditya helps her and earns some brownie points from Izabelle. The pendulum of this triangle goes through all the routine swings until Aditya sees Tanuj and Izabelle together in bed. This is followed by Aditya taking a leap from a cliff along with his jeep.

    Tanuj, who is in the US now, lives with guilt all his life blaming himself for the suicide of Aditya. He avoids coming to Kasauli until his mother passes away and he has to return to complete the rituals and also get rid of the cottage. The past catches up with him as does his love, Izabelle. He meets Aditya’s mother, Sarika, who helps clear his conscience when she tells him that a family feud had led Aditya to take the drastic step and not Tanuj.

    This being a film with unknown actors, it should have been a little shorter so as to lessen the burden on the actors. Also, some things become repetitive. Still, fresh faces coupled with scenic locations backed by good cinematography do make it pleasant watch. Direction is fair but some things could have been clearer in the narrative. The film has peppy music catering to youth. Dialogue is not up to mark. Performance wise, Aditya is impressive. He acts well, looks good and holds promise. Tanuj is okay. Izabelle has to look pretty and that she does. She is not taxed with acting. Sarika is convincing. Manoj Pahwa, Rajit Kapoor and others are adequate.

    Lack of face value will deprive ‘Purani Jeans’ of a decent showing at the box office.

    Kya Dilli Kya Lahore Review…………Who Cares!

    India-Pakistan stories work when the Indian hero gets the better of the Pakistanis as in ‘Gadar: A Love Story’ or, more recently, in ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’.  Otherwise, it is a drain on the audience’s mind.

    ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ is a film about an expatriate Muslim from Chandni Chowk in Delhi (Vijay Raaz), now in Pakistan, and a Hindu one, Manu Rishi, from Lahore, who now lives in a refugee camp in Old Delhi. Both have joined the army of their adopted countries. A day comes when both come face to face in a war zone. Raaz has infiltrated into Indian territory on his senior’s say so to pick a file which contains details of a secret tunnel India has dug from Lal Killa in Delhi to Lahore!! As ordered, Raaz walks into Indian territory and to a camp as if on an evening walk. He is not aware that at that moment, the cabin is occupied by only one person, the camp coo, Manu. Yet he starts shooting at the cabin. Isn’t that rather suicidal in case there are more soldiers inside? And what would a secret file be doing inside a deserted army outpost few hundred meters from the border? But that is how a juvenile this script works.

    After initially shooting bullets, a dialogue starts between the two. Manu denies the existence of any such file, so with little else to do they go into a debate on partition: who caused it and who faced injustice. Who lost how much personally leads them to talking about what they had to leave behind and about friendships, no matter if one was Muslim or Hindu, in the undivided India.

    The two spend the night talking and carry the film for most of its 98-minute running time. Bonhomie is created between the two and Manu even throws boiled potatoes at Raaz for breakfast. But, after breakfast, enters Raj Zutsi, a vagabond dressed in khakhi aspiring to join the army as an officer. Meanwhile, Raaz finds some bullets and takes Manu by surprise, planning to take him to Pakistan to serve as a cook there. Zutshi thinks Manu is deserting the army and crossing over to Pakistan and takes control of the situation—and then loses control too. By then, Vishwajeet Pradhan, Raaz’s superior also comes for a walk in the Indian land. He kills Zutsi and is about to kill Manu but is killed by his own army man, Raaz, instead.

    ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ looks like it was written as a stage play and some temptation made the makers convert it into a movie. It is ancient in its story content. Had it come in, say, 1950, it would have had some relevance to that generation. Both the main characters are not doing this for the love of their country; they are underdogs and doing what they are to make a living. No emotion comes through due to this. Direction is patchy. In terms of production values, this must be one of the cheapest productions with just about four players and a log cabin and surroundings as background. The one song the film has is bad. While Raaz is subdued for a change, Manu does really well. Vishwajeet is fine in a small role and Zutsi goes overboard with his expressions.

    ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ won’t find any takers.

    Kahin Hai Mera Pyar Review           Audience Kahin Nahi

    ‘Kahin Hai Mera Pyar’ looks like the outcome of a director who has nursed the ambition of making a film for a long time, has seen many films, especially old ones, and eventually got around to making it. The influences of decades-old films are apparent in its story, scripting, characterisation and treatment.

    Cast: Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Kapoor, Abhishek Sethiya, Sonia Mann, Gajendra Chauhan    Kishori Shahane Vij, Nishant Sharma, Karuna Arya, Shankar Sachadev, Sunny Agarwal, Dhaval Barbhaya, Krupa Sindhwad.

    Abhishek Sethiya is an artist who lives with his younger sister. He is trying to create the painting of his love, the woman he will fall in love with. The painting is not coming through and he is exasperated. One day, he is so angry he spills all his colour tins on the canvas and the room. Out of this shower of colours, a face emerges on the canvas. Now he has a face and he goes on painting her. His sister is making tea for everybody all the time and considering Abhishek keeps making only his imaginary lover’s paintings, it is a mystery where she gets milk, sugar and the stuff for tea. Food is another matter!

    Jackie Shroff is a hotel owner who likes to promote young talent and holds exhibitions in his gallery. He offers Abhishek the chance to hold an exhibition of his paintings but Abhishek does not want to exhibit or sell his love and refuses the offer. Like all purane zamane ki films, his sister meets with an accident and money is needed for her operation. Reluctantly, Abhishek agrees to an exhibition and there, when the bidding reaches four lakh, Sanjay Kapoor materialises from nowhere and bids 25 lakh. The villain of the love story which is yet to happen is already here.

    Abhishek knows the only way he can find his love is through Sanjay as he would have bought all the paintings only due to some interest in the face. It turns out the girl in the paintings works for Sanjay’s company. He has been very helpful to her family and he wants her to himself. The usual planning and plotting follows to eliminate the hero, because, not only has he traced the girl, now she also loves him.

    The film has gone stale in the making and the content would have been stale even fifty years back. Treatment is amateur. Music is passable. Performances are uninspiring.

    Maker of science programmes turns to Bollywood

    MUMBAI: Maker of the popular science programme ‘Turning Point‘, Sanjay Tripathy, has debuted into filmmaking with his upcoming film ‘Club 60‘ that delves into the lives of a bunch of people aged 60.

    Commenting on his drive to make it to Bollywood, Tripathy said, “I started my career as a journalist. I also produced and directed many science based shows for BBC, National Geographic and Discovery. But making films was always the final destination.”

    Club 60 is about four-five oldies. They are not depressed or bored. They are not even counting their final days. They are a group of happy-go-lucky people who are members of Club 60.

    Being a graduate in Physics and having created a number of science based shows, one expected a science fiction from Tripathy. But the director maintains that the film is very close to his heart as it is based on his own experience.

    “It is based on my personal experience. I used to frequent a club in south Bombay. There I interacted with a bunch of fun loving, passionate oldies. I found out that they were plagued with a lot of troubles in their life but that did not deter their spirit and zeal to live life happily,” he said.

    The film boasts of veteran actors like Farooque Sheikh, Sarika, Satish Shah, Tinu Anand, Raghubir Yadav and Sharat Saxena.

    The film, now under production, is expected to be wrapped up in September and to release by the end of this year.
