Baraat of laughs Chaupal to stream Sarbala Ji this October

MUMBAI: Who needs a wedding planner when you’ve got a sarbala ready to unleash chaos? Chaupal is all set to turn shaadi season into a laugh riot with Sarbala Ji, a comedy of errors premiering exclusively on 2 October 2025.

The film stars Punjabi powerhouses Gippy Grewal as the prank-loving Sucha and Ammy Virk as the shy groom-to-be Gajjan, alongside Nimrat Khaira and Sargun Mehta, who bring glamour, wit, and perfect comic timing to the madness.

In Punjabi tradition, the sarbala, the groom’s page boy adds charm to wedding rituals. But in Sarbala Ji, this simple role snowballs into a whirlwind of confusion. When Sucha convinces his cousin Gajjan to make him sarbala, the mandap becomes ground zero for misplaced rituals, runaway animals, and relatives who don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Big-fat-Punjabi-wedding tropes get a comic twist here, from dhol beats to dance-offs, as director and cast bring both heart and hilarity to the screen. With family feuds, pranks, and surprises tumbling one after another, the film promises a non-stop rollercoaster of giggles and gasps.

Beyond the comedy, Sarbala Ji is a love letter to Punjabi culture. The music, the vibrant sets, and the depiction of wedding traditions make it a festive treat. The presence of Nimrat Khaira and Sargun Mehta ensures the fun is laced with sass, sparkle, and plenty of memorable one-liners.

Chaupal, home to some of the biggest Punjabi originals, positions Sarbala Ji as the go-to family entertainer of the festive season. Whether you’re a veteran of dozens of big-fat Punjabi weddings or someone who’s never seen one, this film guarantees to bring the baraat straight to your living room minus the traffic jams.

So, mark the date. On 2 October, when the groom ties the knot, be prepared for a joyride where rituals meet pranks, traditions meet chaos, and laughter steals the show.

Adding another layer to the drama is Sheizaan Khan as Siddhant, a feared yet soft-hearted moneylender whose life changes when he crosses paths with Sneha.

To mark the launch, Zee TV hosted an experiential set tour in Chandigarh, where media were treated to a soulful meal at the family’s on-screen dhaba, mirroring the warmth and simplicity of the characters.

Zee TV,  chief channel officer, Mangesh Kulkarni said, “With shows like Saru, Tumm Se Tumm Tak, Chhoriyan Chali Gaon, and now Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan, we are bringing forth stories that are rooted in culture yet contemporary in their outlook.”

For lead actor Shubhangi Latkar, the role has been transformative. “Ganga Mai is a symbol of every woman who chooses dignity over despair. Portraying her has been an emotionally enriching journey for me,” she added.

With its message that daughters are never a burden but a source of pride, Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan promises to strike an emotional chord with families across India.

  • Colors explores Punjabis’ Canada dreams with new show Udaariyaan

Colors explores Punjabis’ Canada dreams with new show Udaariyaan

MUMBAI: Colors is all set for an action-packed 2021.The beginning of the year witnessed the finale of its successful nonfiction property Bigg Boss. Post the conclusion of its tentpole programme, the channel has strengthened its weekend slot with the launch of dance reality show Dance Deewane Season 3. New fiction serial Bawara Dil, an adaptation of Colors Marathi’s ongoing popular show Jeev Zala Yeda Pisa, soon followed to shore up its primetime line-up.

Now, the channel is gearing up for the premiere of yet another fiction show, Udaariyaan – a story of hope, love, aspiration, and dreams. Udaariyaan is powered by Colgate and Suhana Masala and will hit the airwaves on 15 March and will air Monday – Saturday at 7 pm. The show is produced by television’s power couple Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta under the banner of Dreamiyata Entertainment and marks their first foray into creating a Hindi GEC show.

Udaariyaan is about the journey of the Sandhu family, who lead their lives in the heartland of Punjab, and nurse the dream of moving to Canada. The Sandhus’ unfulfilled dream from generations now lies in the hands of their daughters. The two protagonists of the show, Tejo (Priyanka Choudhary) and Jasmine (Isha Malviya) are like chalk and cheese. While the elder one Tejo is deeply rooted in her Punjabi culture and wants to be a professor one day, Jasmine feels like she belongs elsewhere. She is determined, strong-willed and will make destiny bend to her will. Fiercely ambitious, all that Jasmine wants is to move to Canada and will only marry someone who makes this dream a reality for her. This blazing ambition on Jasmine’s part affects the dynamics of the Sandhu family and eventually shapes their destiny. Enter Fateh (Ankit Gupta), an absolute romantic who is head over heels in love with Jasmine but does not know how to convey his feelings to her. As Tejo, Jasmine and Fateh’s lives become intertwined, so begins their journey of achieving their dreams. It remains to be seen how Jasmine’s dreams pan out and what happens when Tejo gets stuck in the middle of Jasmine and Fateh’s ambitions.

Viacom18 Hindi Mass Entertainment and Kids TV Network head Nina Elavia Jaipuria said, “At Colors, we always strive to create memorable and relatable stories to provide our audience wholesome entertainment. With a strong line-up of fiction and non-fiction shows across genres, we continue to provide premium variety content and the next endeavour in this direction is our new show Udaariyaan. The Punjabi flavour, the relatable characters and the reflection of Indian dreams will certainly enthral the viewers.”

Dreamiyata Entertainment producer Sargun Mehta shared that after a successful innings as actors, she and Ravi are thrilled to give flight to their little dream of turning producers and the couple couldn’t have asked for a better show than Udaariyan to make that into a reality.

"It is a very special feeling as we have been putting our heart and soul into this project for months and it is finally coming to fruition. We have worked very hard to create some really amazing characters and are now glad that the viewers will get to witness them,” said Mehta.

Dubey, on his part, loves collaborating  with his wife, but finding talent to work with is a big challenge that he faces as a producer. In an interaction with a news portal, he mentioned, “I think getting a great team together is the only big challenge. When you know that you have the best people doing their respective jobs, then it takes a lot of loads away from your shoulders. The right kind of director, the right script, the right writers are crucial to churn out good content."

When asked if he feels that being both an actor and a producer puts him under tremendous pressure, he quipped, “The responsibility of an actor and a producer is similar. I want to give people the right content to live by. It’s not just about making aspirational stuff, it’s also about what you project to people and how you do it. Of course, the responsibility on our shoulders in order to do this has increased but we know that this will help us grow.”

The couple is eager to experiment with various formats and modes of content delivery. First on the agenda is making more content in Hindi and Punjabi. Whether it is OTT, television or movies, the duo wants to focus on giving viewers the content that will engage them.

Colors has designed the show’s campaign hinged on the well-known phenomenon of Punjab’s love for Canada and the aspiration of people from the region to migrate there. In an attempt to uniquely introduce the three lead characters – Tejo, Jasmine and Fateh – in an entertaining musical way, the channel has roped in rap maestro Badshah for a music video. Featuring him alongside the cast of the show, the music video has garnered eight million views across digital platforms. The channel has also planned a nine-day TV campaign across Hindi news, Hindi movies, Hindi music, kids and regional genres. A special focus is being put on the Badshah‘s music video as a part of the TV plan to give people a flavour of Punjab, and a sneak peek into the fun aspects of the show.

Additionally, for the true fans and members of Colors’ Golden Petal Club, a special digital event is planned on launch day showcasing the show’s cast and some behind the scene moments from the sets of Punjab.  On the digital front, along with influencer outreach, a three-part video series will also be showcased which will include testimonial stories of real people and their dreams.

The channel already has a show named Chhoti Sarrdaarni which is also set against the backdrop of Punjab, it would be interesting to see how audiences react to Udaariyaan.

  • Ariel marks Women’s Day with Captain Marvel screening for all the Superwomen

Ariel marks Women’s Day with Captain Marvel screening for all the Superwomen

MUMBAI: This Women’s Day, Ariel partnered with PVR to host a special screening of the movie, Captain Marvel.  Ariel’s latest campaign Sons #ShareTheLoad emphasises on the need for sons to #ShareTheLoad when it comes to household chores. This partnership encourages all men (sons and husbands) to treat their Supermoms and Superwives to a superhero movie, Captain Marvel, because they will #ShareTheLoad and do household tasks together.

Popular television actors and real-life couple – Ravi Dubey, Sargun Mehta along with Ravi’s Mom Sudha Dubey were present at the special screening in Delhi and even interacted with consumers, bloggers, and media. They emphasised on the need for gender parity in a relationship and having an equal household. Sargun and Ravi also thanked Ravi’s mom Sudha for instilling in him at a young age the importance of doing household chores like laundry and cooking hence enabling them to be a Super Couple today as they #ShareTheLoad.

Ariel also invited men to record a personal message for their Superwoman, which Ariel will send out on their behalf. To further normalise men doing household chores like laundry, Ariel has put up eye-catching installations at PVR theatres across Delhi and Mumbai. A special screening has been arranged in both cities for Ariel’s #MyCaptainMarvelous online-contest winners, bloggers and other marvel enthusiasts. The men in the audience were also taught how to do laundry, so they can go back home and #ShareTheload – EVERYDAY!

The newly-released edition of #ShareTheLoad raises yet another pertinent question in the direction of household inequality – Are we teaching our sons what we are teaching our daughters? The film that urges mothers of today’s generation to raise a generation of equals has resonated with many parents, newly married couples, influencers and has already received tremendous support and commendation from audiences across India. The film that released on 24 January 2019 garnered 25 million views in 1 month, and they have just begun! Ariel continues to have this conversation by making laundry the face of the movement against inequality within households, because with Ariel, anyone can get best results no matter who does the laundry.

  • Boogie Woogie is back with a bang

Boogie Woogie is back with a bang

MUMBAI: One of the oldest and longest running dance reality shows – Boogie Woogie – is returning to television screens after a hiatus of nearly four years.

The show promises to be bigger and better in its new avatar – Boogie Woogie Kids Champion – even as it retains popular elements like the judges’ trio of Javed Jaffery, Naved Jaffery and Ravi Behl. Scheduled to premiere on Sony Entertainment Television on 7 December, the show will take the slot vacated by Kaun Banega Crorepati, airing every Saturday and Sunday at 8.30pm.

Produced by R&N TV Productions owned by Ravi and Naved, the show will see 16 talented kids between 7 and 13 years of age compete for the title of ‘Boogie Woogie Kids Champion’. This time round, nearly double the amount of money has been spent on producing the show; informs Naved. The show travelled to 10 cities and auditioned around 1 lakh children, of which 1000 kids were short-listed in the beginning. “100 were finalised, out of which 16 have been selected for the show,” says Naved.

A lot has been done in terms of packaging to add freshness and newness to the show. For instance, the show will now have two hosts in actor Sargun Mehta and 12-year-old Rakshit Wahi who will keep the audience entertained. Speaking on the sidelines of the show’s launch on Monday, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) VP & Head – Non-fiction Programming, Aloka Guha, said: “While earlier, we didn’t have hosts, this time, we have got Sargun and Rakshit on board to add more fervour.”

Since the show is not trying to compete with any other dance reality show on television, the theme is very family-oriented. “We are competing with ourselves. We were ruling for 17 years and have become a culture in a way,” says Naved, adding that the huge leap in technology in the last three to four years is helping them come up with a better product. “However, only technology can’t really help a show; one has to come up with strong engaging content as well,” he points out.

While earlier, we didn’t have hosts, this time, we have got Sargun and Rakshit on board to add more fervour, says Aloka Guha

The show is a mix of old and new elements and unlike other dance reality shows, the makers haven’t introduced any audience voting system. “We didn’t feel the need for a voting system. We want the audience to watch the show for its content and nothing else,” says Naved.

Programming-wise, Sony Entertainment Television is working in tandem with R&N TV Productions and Aloka is of the view that since the channel has hosted some of the best reality shows like Indian Idol and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, it has a team of the top order, which can really help produce an excellent show. Interestingly, SET wanted to start a dance show for quite some time and what better than to revive a brand like Boogie Woogie, which enjoys a long and successful association with the channel.

About the phantom high-speed camera used for shooting the show, Aloka says: “The camera can record up to 5,000 frames per second and that has given an edge to the show. The show has scaled up in a lot of other ways as well. While we have a very large set-up, we are also following the pyramid shape structure for the first time. Boogie Woogie has never been a reality show where you follow a contestant. It has had special episodes like super moms, weekly etc. However, now, through the 15 weeks, we are going to follow the journey of the contestants and that is a big development.”

The team is trying to get on board the show celebs with a knack for dancing. So, the first episode will have Prabhu Dheva and Shahid Kapoor while latter episodes will see Madhuri Dixit and Arshad Warsi among others.

Coming to promotions, SET has so far released four videos that are parodies of popular songs including ILU ILU, Lungi Dance, Na Na Na Re and Chaar Baj Gaye.

    16 finalists with the judges

Aloka says the idea was to make the promotions fun just like the theme of the show. “We were brainstorming for the promotional videos when somebody generally hummed Ye Boogie Woogie kya hai, ye Boogie Woogie..And bang on, we got the idea of what we have to do,” she says.

Informs SET head of marketing and senior VP Gaurav Seth: “The promotional videos are being promoted on all the Multi Screen Media channels including SAB, SET, PIX, MIX, SIX and MAX.” He hopes the show will help take SET’s ratings up. “Since the weekend slot has worked really well for us, we are hoping for a lot of traction for this as well. Plus, since the concept has worked really well for us in the past, we are planning a lot of on-ground activities to promote the show. We may even come up with a mobile app to reach out to the tech-savvy generation,” he adds.

Currently, Horlicks has come on board as the ‘powered by’ sponsor whereas other deals are in the process of being finalised. “We would clearly know the final sponsors by the week end,” says Seth.

SET plans to go in to a digital overdrive as well for the show. However, they want to keep their strategies a ‘secret’ at the moment. “We have to go with the time and we will go all out to make the show a phenomenon. However, we will decide the promotional strategies as we progress,” Javed signs off.
