Dhoni spoke about his new role as the captain of RPS, saying, “I am looking forward to a new experience with the RPS. IPL has always been the breeding ground for new exciting talents who have the potential to play vital part in the future for the Indian Cricket Team. This year we have a very balanced side with the right combination of youth and experience which is essential for any team to succeed. We have got some big hitters and players who know to bind the innings together by putting on partnerships. Both batting and bowling unit looks good on paper but consistent performance will be the yardstick for judging the team. I am really looking forward to working with the new team management and hopefully we can make the people of Pune happy with our performance.”

    RPS logo and jersey rationale

The elements used in the jersey connote the dynamism and ‘ever-rising’ spirit of the team RPS. The colours used are vibrant and complement each other in bringing out the winning attitude of the team. Of the colours on the jersey, purple in particular makes a statement of superiority and brings out the energy of this team of stars. “The orange colour signifies the team’s firm determination and enthusiasm to break every barrier, thus winning every game. The bold look of the jersey reflects the confidence and ability of this team of star players who have their sights set firmly on success,” said an official statement from RPS.

The word ‘Rising’ at a deeper level traces back to the free spirit of ‘Pune’ that never bowed down before any odds. Moreover, it also depicts the heights of excellence and success the new team will achieve being studded with ‘Super’ players like Dhoni, Ashwin, and Smith. Every player in the team is a star who shines bright in every battle, giving their best under pressure. In that sense they are also ‘Giants’ with extraordinary stature, performing astonishing feats.

The logo has a regal feel and its visual elements are an amalgamation of cricketing equipment like the bat, the ball and the bails. The wings impart an overall impression of ‘soaring high’ while the bold font provides a sense of solidity. The purple colour of the ball signifies the energy and stability of the team.

RPS will be having ex-New Zealand Skipper Stephen Fleming as the Coach of the side. The team will also have a professional CEO in Raghu Iyer, who is a Sports, Media and Entertainment professional with 21 years of invaluable experience. Prior to joining the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, he was with Rajasthan Royals since its inception.

  • Spencer’s to finalise e-commerce plan next fiscal, aims to increase private labels

Spencer’s to finalise e-commerce plan next fiscal, aims to increase private labels

KOLKATA: RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group’s Spencer’s Retail aims to finalise its e-commerce plan by April next fiscal (2015-16). Spencer’s Retail sector head Shashwat Goenka confirmed that prices at the brick and mortar stores and the e-commerce would be the same once the company offers the product online in April.

Additionally, Spencer’s Retail, a CESC subsidiary, also said that it has decided to augment and increase its private labels, mostly in food and apparels.

“We would freeze the e-commerce business model within next couple of months and implement it over a time period. We are likely to begin with a few categories of products for our on-line store,” Goenka said in Kolkata on Friday.

To make a differentiation and to cut down logistics cost, the company would depend on local sourcing more than pan-India collection. “In West Bengal, we are focusing on local food items including varieties of fish and rice,” he said.

It should be noted that within a short span of its operation, Spencer’s has become a family store since it offers regional flavours in the product vertical. “Spencer’s has decided to stress more on local sourcing and bring in regional flavours in the product baskets,” Goenka said.

Talking about the plans for apparel section, he said, “In the apparel segment, we are looking for a new sourcing point in Kerala. We have developed seven apparel brands including men’s, women’s, kids and sports wear.”

The retail chain is also looking to expand its chain but mainly through large-format in the range of above 25,000 square feet, said Goenka, explaining that all these efforts were geared to make Spencer’s profitable.

Speaking about the company’s expansion strategy, Goenka said that Spencer’s would focus on expanding in the eastern and southern markets of the country. “We would also be present in the north, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region,” he said.

However, western region will continue to see a token presence in Gujarat.

In the next fiscal 2015-16, Spencer’s is looking at commanding a presence in 12 – 15 large format hyper stores, with a majority of stores being in the eastern and southern regions.

Currently, Spencer’s has around 125 stores in 36 cities including 33 hyper stores. The total store area now stands at over one million square-feet.

For expansion, Spencer’s would spend approximately Rs 3 -5 crore for each hyper store. When asked about the funding for expansion, Goenka said, “CESC, our parent company, would fund the projects.”

  • I really wanted to be a part of ISL, says King Khan

I really wanted to be a part of ISL, says King Khan

KOLKATA: After a number of starts recently flaunting their football teams, King Khan, who already co-owns a cricket team, expressed his disappointment at not being able to be a part of the Indian Super League (ISL).

The Baadshah of Bollywood who tried to buy the Kolkata franchise of the ISL said that he could not bring himself to buying another city.

“I will say something which is unfortunate and sad for me. I really wanted to be a part of ISL and I wanted to own a football team but there was no way that I would have got Kolkata and if I can’t have Kolkata I can’t have any other city,” the superstar reckoned.

“I was offered every other city but I said I won’t do it,” he added. “If we play football we have to play for Kolkata, you don’t play for any other city. I have all my love for Mumbai and Delhi but the city I back is Kolkata.”

The brand ambassador of West Bengal, who was in Kolkata to promote his latest film Happy New Year described Kolkata as his ‘home’.

“This is my hometown. I have been all over the world to promote this film. But I told them that one place where you have to come is Kolkata which is my own city,” SRK said.

He, however, congratulated Ganguly, the co-owner for the ISL’s Kolkata franchise. “More deserving than me is ‘dada’ (Ganguly) and he should have it and I can’t compete with him…I wish ‘dada’ and everyone in the championship. I hope it does well.”

He said the team is in better hands than him and would do well.

“Even today when I was flying down I felt very sad that I don’t have the football team of Kolkata. I started IPL because I was told that IPL will extend into soccer. My love is for football. I play football, my son plays football and my daughter is the captain in football,” the actor-producer revealed.

He also went to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with Happy New Year co-actors Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and director Farah Khan. “She has told me that she has liked my film although I don’t think she had the time to watch the whole film. She is the ‘didi’ (elder sister), I do not see her only as a chief minister,” Khan said.

Khan, who also co-owns IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, said he had met everyone involved to buy the Kolkata ISL franchisee which was eventually bought jointly by former cricketer Sourav Ganguly, businessmen Harshavardhan Neotia, Sanjiv Goenka, Utsav Parekh and Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
