  • Zee Classic to air cult favourite ‘Sholay’ for the first time

Zee Classic to air cult favourite ‘Sholay’ for the first time

MUMBAI: Even after 40 years of its release, the characters and dialogues of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay are etched into our memories. Be it Basanti chatting away nines to the dozen but at the end claiming breathlessly, ‘Kyunke mujhe befuzool baat karne ki aadat to hai nahin’ or Gabbar Singh’s booming voice philosophizing, ‘Jo darr gaya samjho margaya’ or the sound of the swing squeaking after the dacoits have inflicted their reign of terror on the household of Thakur Baldev Singh, the movie continues to be a favourite throughout generations. Bringing alive its core proposition – ‘Woh Zamaana, Kare Deewana’ – Zee Classic brings the greatest epic ever told with the finest starcast ever assembled on Saturday, 20 June at 7:30 pm.

The movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan in lead roles holds a first-time record of running successfully for five years at Mumbai’s Minerva theatre. Not many know that initially Dharmendra was keen to play the role of Thakur Baldev Singh, which was immortalised by Sanjeev Kumar. He agreed to play Veeru only when the director told him, if he didn’t do it, Sanjeev Kumar would get the part and Basanti, too. Since Sanjeev Kumar had just proposed marriage to Hema Malini, Dharmendra didn’t want him sharing screen space with her let alone romancing her. And as they say rest is history, he quickly took on Veeru’s role.

During the making of Sholay, four of the leads became romantically involved. While Amitabh Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri four months before filming started, Dharmendra had begun wooing Hema Malini during their earlier film Seeta Aur Geeta and used the location of Sholay to help further his case. During their romantic scenes, he would pay the light boys to spoil the shot, thereby ensuring retakes.

Exalted more than a religious scriptures for characterisation in Bollywood, Sholay tells a story of Amitabh Bachchan (Jai) and Dharmendra (Veeru) the two outlaws hired by a traumatized police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to avenge the brutal murder of his family by Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), the most feared villain in Hindi film.

Everything about Sholay attained classic status and quickly entered the pop culture mainstream: the music by R.D. Burman, the dialogue by Salim-Javed and the characters, who also include garrulous female horse cart driver Basanti (Hema Malini) and the wistful widow Radha (Jaya Bhaduri).

  • ‘Sholay’ is history!

    ‘Sholay’ is history!

MUMBAI: There was a time when the trend was to convert old black-and-white classics into colour format and re-release them. The trend did not last for obvious reasons. Converting normal films into 3D started in the US while in India doing so with Sholay will prove to be the ultimate test for Hindi films since it is a trendsetter – box office hit and a cult. If it works, it will open the floodgates of more such attempts and if it does not, it will put paid to all such aspirations. The original was written off during its initial few weeks of its release as a major failure but, finally, its technically better 70mm/stereophonic version turned the trend in its favour to make it what it became, a legend. Will this additional technical enhancement reactivate its box office account?

To refresh the memories on the story front, Sholay (1975) finds its roots in the all time classic, Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese film, Seven Samurai (1954), which was later adapted in Hollywood as The Magnificent Seven (1960). A farming village in Mexico hires seven gunmen from the US to protect them from a bunch of 40 bandits who raid them every year to take away their farm product. In Sholay, Sanjeev Kumar, an ex-policeman hires two petty goons, Dharmendra and AmitabhBachchan, known for their valour to save his villagers from a similar exploitation by the gang of Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. Though his first major break and his entry happening almost 75 minutes into the film, his character became a cult figure.

The film is an old fashioned three-and-a-half-hour-long one since in those days less than three hours made people feel cheated. And the film justifies its duration by giving many side actors of the time memorable roles and lines. Among them were Asrani (Angrezon ke zamane ka jailor), Mak Mohan (Sambha), AK Hangal (the blind Imaam of the village mosque), even Hema Malini’s tonga-pulling mare, Dhanno! The writers, Salim and Javed, who made the story/script writers respectable in the film industry, specialised in penning memorable dialogue and that is the reason that even though the film’s music track was not found to be popular and its albums were not in demand, the music company, Polydor India, minted on the release of the film’s dialogue tracks on LPs and cassettes.

If slotted, Sholay would fall in the category of dacoit film. Yet it was much different from other dacoit films, blending the past and contemporary movies of that era. The one memorable dacoit film before Sholay was a few years earlier, in 1971 in Mera Gaon Mera Desh followed by Khote Sikkay in 1974; the trend came to an end since no one could better Sholay and also because Sholay stayed in theatres for five long years. While these were all make-believe dacoit films, the real one came around in 1994, Bandit Queen

How can one review a film made over 38 years ago and had tomes written about it?

As for this 3D version, it has been very economical with 3D scenes and not gone overboard. The 3D resolution is such that you may easily watch it without 3D glasses but the main 3D scenes would be missed; the few that the film has are not worth missing.

The opening response in the initial shows has not shown much enthusiasm by moviegoers and, if the trend continues through the weekend, this will be the epitaph for the legend of Sholay.

    Producer: G P Sippy.

    Director: Ramesh Sippy.

Cast: : Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, HemaMalini, Jaya Bhaduri, Amjad Khan, SatyenKappu, AK Hangal, Sachin, Jagdeep, Leela Mishra, Asrani, Keshto Mukherjee, Mak Mohan, VijuKhote, Iftekhar, in spl appearance Helen and Jalal Agha.

    Disaster in making

Mr Joe B Carvalho collects a bunch of small time actors with a reputation for having done good comedy films once upon a time and thinks it has the formula! How about getting a scriptwriter with a sense of comedy, humour, repartees and how about a director who shares these traits too? The so called comic actors can do precious little without content. The imagination is so scarce, that in this film based in Bangaluru, all the characters happen to be Punjabi!

The film has no story as such so to narrate it is a task but, to put it in nutshell, like many such attempts it is about mistaken identities and a career loser, Arshad Warsi, who plays a detective. Now, how many times have we seen a fumbling, bumbling, detective before? Remembering Pink Panther at this moment will be sacrilege (though the poster design has certainly stolen from there).

Warsi, a detective, is handed a case by Shakti Kapoor, who wants to stop his daughter from marrying a cook with whom she has run away. On the other hand, Snehal Dabi, an Idi Amin caricature, has fallen in love with Geeta Basra while she loves some diamond merchant. So being Idi Amin-like, he gives out a supari (contract) on her beau to Carlos aka Javed Jaffery; may the real legendary international assassin Carlos rest in peace!

The comedy as well as the humour is just about nonexistent in this film. Casting is totally awry. The film credits four people for lyrics but not a single song makes sense (and they’re out of sync too). Arshad, Soha, Javed as well as the others are ineffective.

Mr Joe B Karvalho is a disaster waiting to happen soon as opens on its first Friday.

    Producer: Bholaram Malviya, Shital Malviya.

    Director: Samir Tewari.

Cast: : Arshad Warsi, Soha Ali Khan, Jaaved Jaaferi, Vijay Raaz, Shakti Kapoor, Vrajesh Hirjee, Geeta Basra, Karishma Kotak, Ranjeet, Himani Shivpuri, Manoj Joshi, Snehal Dabi, Chitra Shenoy.

  • PVR to buy 69.29% Cinemax promoter stake for Rs 3.95 bn; plex biz in consolidation phase

PVR to buy 69.29% Cinemax promoter stake for Rs 3.95 bn; plex biz in consolidation phase

MUMBAI: Ajay Bijli-promoted PVR Ltd. has agreed to buy the entire 69.27 per cent promoter stake in competing multiplex operator Cinemax India for Rs 3.95 billion, which will make it the biggest multiplex operator in the country.

The deal values Cinemax at Rs 5.7 billion, making it an expensive purchase. Since Cinemax has 138 screens, PVR has paid a higher premium to fortify its presence in Western India, including Mumbai.

For exiting the business, the Kanakias are being paid at Rs 203.65 per share. Cinemax‘s stock jumped 4.99 per cent on Thursday to close at a new high of Rs 184.25.

PVR is making the acquisition through Cine Hospitality, its wholly-owned subsidiary.

Of the 69.29 per cent promoters stake in Cinemax India, Himanshi and Rasesh Kanakia hold 33.46 per cent each while Rupal and Hiral Kanakia own 1.17 per cent each. The remaining 0.03 per cent stake is held by Kanakia Gruhnirman and Kanakia Finance and Investments.

PVR Promoter Ajay Bijli said, “In order to achieve market leadership in Indian Exhibition business, PVR has been on a rapid expansion mode both through organic as well as inorganic routes. Today, with the proposed acquisition of Cinemax, we hope to create the largest movie exhibition chain in India."

Cinemax Promoter Rasesh Kanakia said, “We believe that the Exhibition business benefits from consolidation as large scale strengthens competitive advantage as well as significantly enhances operational efficiencies. This transaction enables realization of such benefits and would create significant value for all the shareholders of Cinemax. The deal will enable us to ensure greater focus on our real estate and hospitality businesses.”

PVR with the backing of private equity investors will also make an open offer to public shareholders of Cinemax, which would eventually culminate in the delisting of the company’s shares.

As part of the open offer, Cine Hospitality will acquire up to 7.2 million fully paid-up equity shares of face value of Rs 5 each representing 26 per cent of the fully diluted voting equity share capital of Cinemax at a price of Rs 203.65 per share.

PVR has also got the board approval to issue 10.62 million fully paid equity shares on a preferential basis to Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev Kumar, L Capital, Multiples Private Equity Fund I Limited, and Multiples Private Equity Fund at Rs 245 per share to raise Rs 2.6 billion.

Under the preferential issue of equity shares in PVR Limited, Multiples will invest an amount of approximately Rs 1.53 billion, L Capital would invest approximately Rs 823 million and Promoters would invest approximately Rs 250 million into PVR.

Post the above dilution, both Multiples Private Equity and L Capital would own approximately 15.8 per cent stake each in the company and the Promoters will hold 32 per cent stake in the Company.

The owners of Cinemax had demerged their multiplex business from the core real estate business, which was housed in Cinemax Property. Earlier this year, international private equity fund L Capital Eco had agreed to invest a total of Rs 1.07 billion in PVR.

In the last fiscal, Cinemax had posted a profit of Rs 77.9 million on revenues of Rs 2.7 billion. While, PVR‘s net profit stood at Rs 281.1 million on revenues of Rs 4.7 billion.

Expensive deal but PVR gets location advantage

The deal values the per screen price at Rs 45 million, more than double the cost if PVR were to have build on its own. PVR has valued Cinemax, which has a net debt of Rs 850 million, at Rs 5.7 billion.

"While PVR becomes the largest multiplex operator, the premium paid for the acquisition is definitely too high. If PVR had decided to build it itself, the capex requirement would have been Rs 20 million per screen. But PVR gets location advantage and makes up for its weakness in western India," says an analyst at a broking firm.

PVR currently has 46 operational properties, with 213 screens and a seating capacity of 50,655 seats. Cinemax has 39 operational properties, with 138 screens and a seating capacity of 33,535 seats.

Theis acquisition would create the largest movie exhibition chain in India with a combined strength of 351 screens at 85 locations with a total capacity of 84,190 seats.

This will also give PVR a leadership position in 10 key markets across the country. It will also help PVR to strengthen its position in Mumbai where Cinemax owns 45 screens and where average ticket prices are higher.

The acquisition will also help PVR scale up its multiplex business. "For multiplex operators in India, the biggest challenge is to scale up through the organic route. And there are few good multiplexes available to buy. So the premium paid is justifiable," says a media analyst.

    Consolidation in the multiplex business

The multiplex industry is entering a consolidation phase. Earlier, Inox Leisure Ltd had bought out the promoter‘s stake of 43.3 per cent in Fame India Ltd for Rs 664.8 million. Later this June, Fame was merged with Inox to become India’s largest multiplex chain with 257 screens.

"There will be pressure on other multiplexes to acquire or sell. The business requires huge amount of cash to expand," says a media analyst.
