Sanjay Dutt asserts he will complete his films, says he respects the judicial system

NEW DELHI: Even as Press Council of India Chairman Markanday Katju has appealed to the Maharashtra Governor to K Sankarnarayanan to grant parole to Sanjay Dutt and the Union Government feels the ball is in the Governor‘s court if he receives an appeal, the actor himself has said "I have always respected the judicial system and will continue to do so, even with tears in my eyes."

In a statement, Dutt who has been held guilty of being in possession of arms said "I have already suffered for 20 years and been in jail for 18 months. If they want me to suffer more I have to be strong. I am heartbroken because today along with me, my three children and my wife and my family will undergo the punishment."

He said he was going to complete all his films and would not let anyone down.

"I am overwhelmed by the support of my fans the industry people, the media and all the well wishers. They have always stood by me and supported me. I know in my heart that I have always been a good human being, respected the system and always been loyal to my country."

He added, "My family is very emotional right now and I have to be strong for them. I am shattered and in emotional distress. I am sorry I can‘t come down and meet you all. God is great and he will guide me through this."
Law Minister Ashwani Kumar indicated that the matter will be looked into and an "appropriate" decision taken once such a plea is made by the actor. "The Governor will use his discretionary power when there will be an appeal to him. He has the power to pardon. We should not comment on it," he said.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said the authorities will take cognisance of the matter at the appropriate level.

"Justice Katju has been a very eminent judge of the Supreme Court. Whenever he articulates a position on an issue, people both inside and outside the government listen to it carefully," Tewari told reporters outside Parliament.

"But there are various aspects to the issue and I am sure that those people within government whether at the state government or level of various other instrumentalities of government, who are seized with the responsibility of dealing with the issue, take the cognizance of the statement and then, if required, formulate an appropriate response and then come back," he added.

In a letter to Maharashtra Governor, Justice Katju sought pardon for Dutt, whose six years sentence was reduced to five years by the Supreme Court in an arms case related to the 1993 Bombay blasts.

Sanjay Dutt to spend 42 months in jail in Mumbai blasts case, SC commutes sentence

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today gave some relief to actor Sanjay Dutt in the Mumbai blasts case as it commuted his jail sentence from six years to five years but would in effect be in jail for three and a half years.

The actor was given a six-year jail term by the TADA court. The court took cognizance of the fact that the actor had already spent 18 months behind the bars during the trial.

At the same time, the apex court rejected his probation plea and directed him to surrender within four weeks.

Referring to Dutta, the court said: ‘the circumstances and nature of offence was so serious that he cannot be released on probation. “… (the) evidence and materials perused by the TADA court in arriving at the decision against Dutt was correct.”

The actor had been convicted for illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, but was acquitted of more serious charges of criminal conspiracy.

The Court also pronounced judgment in the case of others convicted for the blasts.

After 10-month hearing that started on 1 November 2011, the Court had in August 2012 reserved its verdict in the case.

On 12 March 1993, Mumbai was rocked by a series of blasts that killed 257 people and left 713 injured.

BO: Kai Po Che picks up pace over weekend

MUMBAI: Abhishek Kapoor’s directorial venture Kai Po Che, which opened low and with mixed reports, picked up well over the weekend to collect Rs 168 million for the opening three days. This is generally on the patronage by multiplex audience as at places with single screens shows had to be cancelled due to lack of audience.

Sanjay Dutt and Vivek Oberoi starrer Zila Ghaziabad did not fare as well and managed to collect Rs 104 million in its opening weekend.

The Bhatt camp’s latest offering Murder 3 found little appreciation and resulted in a below average first week with collections of 171.5 million.

Vivek Oberoi’s slack run at the box office continued as his second release this month, Jayantabhai KI Love Story, continued to do poorly. The film managed to collect just about Rs 25 million in its first week.

Special 26 maintained steady collections in its second week to collect Rs 183 million, taking its box-office total to Rs 601 million.

ABCD: Any Body Can Dance held well in its second week to collect Rs 91 million. Its two-week total is Rs 369 million.

Race 2 added Rs 11 million in its fourth week to have box office collections of Rs 975.3 million so far, just shy of being the first movie in 2013 to cross the Rs one billion mark.

3rd and 4th installment of Munnabhai coming up

MUMBAI: Not only Rajkumar Hirani will don the director‘s hat for the third installment of the series, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has also announced a fourth film of the franchise.

Both the films will be shot back-to-back in which Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi will reprise their roles as Munna Bhai and Circuit.

Hirani and Chopra were discussing the story of the third film. As things developed, they realised that there was a story within the story and there was scope to develop it into a separate film. This is when the fourth chapter was thought about. After a series of meetings the two finally decided to add a fourth installment to the franchise.

Although, there were reports that Habib Faisal of Band Baaja Baraat fame or Rajesh Mapuskar, who recently directed Ferrari ki Savari for Chopra might be roped in to direct the third installment, the producer couldn‘t think of any other name besides Hirani to handle the two projects.

Hirani will start shooting the third part around Christmas in India while the fourth film might see Munnabhai and his sidekick travel abroad for the first time. The director of the fourth part is still to be finalized.

  • Yet another disappointment from RGV

    Yet another disappointment from RGV

MUMBAI: When Ram Gopal Varma makes a film, one is a bit sceptical. He has not made a sensible film in a long time after all! When you go to a movie expecting nothing, you do usually come out happier than if you expected a masterpiece.

Producer: Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Uberoi Line Productions.
    Director: Ram Gopal Varma.
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati, Deepak Tijori, Vijay Raaz, Abhimanyu Singh,Anjana Sukhani, Laxmi Manchu, Madhu Shalini.

This, however, is not the case with Department, the latest Ram Gopal Varma film. One does go in expecting nothing but one comes out exasperated and mentally fatigued. Department is an exercise in senility: it tries your patience, it tests your nerves and it challenges your sensibilities. After a run time of 2 hours 13 minutes, you come out not knowing who was who in the film, what his motives were and, to top it all, you are threatened with a sequel!

There are some cops on a killing spree in order to get the better of the underworld. Rana Daggubati, one of them, is singled out for suspension for being trigger-happy. The other one, Sanjay Dutt, knows to hide his tracks well. Since there is too much of underworld, some unknown and unexplained face decides to form a special task force called Department, which will not be answerable to anyone and which will not exist on paper.

But, this being a Ram Gopal Varma film, all and sundry know of its existence the moment it is formed. That includes a crazy looking Mumbai don, Vijay Raaz, and a secretive Dubai-based kingpin, Ghouri Mohammed. Rana and Dutt both embark on a shooting spree killing some random faces to reach Vijay Raaz. The charade goes on until a little before the interval, when Amitabh Bachchan makes his entry. He is an idiosyncratic character who ties a small bell to his wrist and has a weird story to tell about it which he never really tells. He is some sort of a minister who pulls all the strings even as he behaves like he is off his rocker. He is a don turned politician after attaining sakashtkar under Dharavi Bridge.

The Department, which is a small band of shooters, soon has different sponsors. Sanjay Dutt obeys the faceless don in Dubai, Rana listens to Amitabh Bachchan and the rest, including Deepak Tijori are incidental.

Having killed most of the Mumbai underworld, the Department heroes end up killing each other: long live the Don in Dubai; he is spared for Department 2 if you care.

Department has a sequence of events but no cohesive script. Ram Gopal Varma grossly misuses his artistes and takes the audience for granted. He makes this narration into a perfect torture device. Dialogue is pedestrian. Music is irrelevant and forced. Ram Gopal’s experiment with student cinematographers becomes a joke as he goes overboard. Editing is nonexistent.

As for performances, only Rana Daggubati looks sincere. Amitabh Bachchan’s character and getup are designed to make an impact; all they do is make him look like a psycho. Sanjay Dutt is his usual self. Vijay Raaz is unlike any don one has known or heard of. The characters of Abhimanyu Singh and his girl, Madhu Shalini, border on insane. This bunch shows the maker’s taste for the macabre.

Department is a rank bad film with poor box office prospects.

Lacklustre scripting, doomed to go unnoticed

    Producer: Chandra Pemmaraju.
    Director: Chandra Pemmaraju.
Cast: Melanie Kannokada, Arjun Gupta, Levrenti Lopes, Michael Derek, Rob Byrnes, Ryan Vigilant, Aaron Katter, Leah Kavita, Carolyn Korale.

Love Lies And Seeta (English with few Hindi dialogue) is directed by Chandra Pemmaraju, who clearly has a passion for filmmaking. An Indian-American, his two earlier shorts have been a part of various film festivals. The film is a shoestring-budget love story about an Indian-origin girl, Seeta (Melanie Kannokada, a former Miss India America), and three boys who fall in love with her.

The boys, Arjun Gupta, Levrenti Lopes and Michael Derek, are all students who vie with each other to win Seeta’s love and attention. They get into a silent war of deception amongst them, which verges on violence. Seeta dates all three simultaneously which further adds to the misunderstandings among the boys.

Seeta, who was adopted as a child by an American couple, seeks counsel from her father, Rob Byrnes, after which she decides to tell all three boys that she likes them as friends but is not in love with any of them. She also discovers her true love in Ryan Vigilant, with whom she had played in her childhood and who has been in love with her since then. Seeta also has her two close friends who are nursing a silent love for two of the boys but can’t open up since the boys are in love with Seeta. Eventually, all end up getting their partners.

Chandra Pemmaraju chooses the New York summer as the backdrop of his narration and presents some pleasant visuals of the New York landscape. The drawback is with his scripting which is like oral storytelling and is slow without dramatics. Music is apt and soothing.

Love Lies And Seeta, released without any sort of promotion, is fated to pass unnoticed.
