Sanjay Dutt sings Qawali after 41 years in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Zanjeer’

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had acted as member of a qawali party forty-one years earlier in his father Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera as a child artiste, will be rendering a qawali once again as the iconic Sher Khan in the forthcoming re-imagined version of Zanjeer.

While the new version being released on 7 September stars Ramsharan and Priyanka Chopra with Sanjay Dutt, the original starred megastar Amitabh Bachchan – who was also an artiste in Reshma aur Shera – with Jaya Bachchan.

Sanjay’s formal debut had come years later in his father’s film Rocky, which went on to be a massive hit. Today after 41 years in the industry, Sanjay has over 150 films in his kitty.

Dutt has donned a never-seen-before look. His look as Sher Khan which was revealed some time back in the trailer has already been admired by audiences.

The actor himself was extremely psyched about doing the qawali sequence in the song Khochey Pathan Ki Zubaan and director Apoorva Lakhia is confident that this will be one of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable performances on the big screen.

Along with Sanjay Dutt Apoorva Lakhia’s tour de force Zanjeer stars an elite ensemble cast of Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Atul Kulkarni.

Zanjeer has been produced by Reliance Entertainment, Puneet Prakash Mehra, Sumeet Prakash Mehra and Flying Turtle Films, and co-produced by Rampage Motion Pictures.

Sanjay Dutt to serve sentence in Yerwada prison, to file curative petition

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt today surrendered before the designated TADA court in Mumbai to serve his sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

The court directed that he be sent to the Yerwada jail.

Earlier on his entering the court, formalities began for his surrender. The court commenced the process for the identification of Dutt, whose conviction was upheld by the supreme court recently.

He had come to the court with his wife Maanyata, brother-in-law Kumar Gaurav and senior filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

On arrival, he was mobbed by the media and both he and Bhatt appealed to the media persons to let him complete the formality of surrender.

Meanwhile, his lawyer later told media-persons that he would move the Supreme Court with a curative petition.

The supreme court on 10 May rejected a review petition by the actor against his conviction under the Arms Act.

The court had earlier on 21 March upheld his conviction under the Arms Act and sentenced him to five years of jail in relation to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. However, he was given time to complete his assignments in the film industry.

He had to surrender by 4.00 pm today.

The court which had upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, a key conspirator with Dawood Ibrahim in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, had ordered that Dutt return to jail to serve three-and-a-half years’ sentence for possessing illegal arms. Dutt has already served a jail term of 18 months.

A total of 257 persons were killed and 713 others injured when a series 13 coordinated explosions shattered the metropolis on 12 March 1993.

The blasts occurred at 12 places, including Bombay Stock Exchange building, Air-India Building at Nariman Point, at Worli opposite Century Bazaar, Hotels Sea Rock and Juhu Centaur.

SC gives Sanjay Dutt another four week breather before returning to jail

MUMBAI:With reference to Sanjay Dutt‘s application seeking a six-month extension of his 18 April deadline, the Supreme Court has given him four more weeks‘ time to complete his films before returning to jail.

The judges responding to Dutt‘s appeal said that the decision was taken on humanitarian grounds. "We extend the time by four weeks from tomorrow. It is made clear that no further extension will be granted," they informed.

On Monday, while filing the application for a six-month extension, Dutt had said that seven films with a budget of Rs 2.78 billion were under various stages of production and it needed 196 acting days to complete.

The actor is currently working in double shifts to wrap up the three projects on hand – Peekay, Zanjeer and Polocigiri, before surrendering himself.

Besides this, he will also be shooting for the cameo he plays in home production Hasmukh Pighal Gaya. The film is being directed by Sejal Shah and has a bunch of newcomers.

  • Sanjay Dutt not to seek pardon; Katju appeals to President for forgiveness on humanitarian grounds

Sanjay Dutt not to seek pardon; Katju appeals to President for forgiveness on humanitarian grounds

NEW DELHI: Even though actor Sanjay Dutt has said he would surrender when the time comes and would not be seeking pardon, Press Council of India Justice Markandey Katju has sent a written appeal to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking pardon for the actor and a 71-year old woman.

Both Dutt and the woman were sentenced to five years in jail by the Supreme Court last week in a case related to the 1993 Bombay blasts. Dutt has already served eighteen months in prison.

On 21 March, the apex court asked Dutt – convicted of illegal possession of weapons – to surrender within four weeks.

Asked about Dutt‘s statement, Justice Katju said, "That makes no difference to me…I will appeal for him because he is not a terrorist and he has been in jail for 18 months. He has suffered a lot and in a way he has faced is punishment."

A copy of the letter has also been sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.

Earlier, Justice Katju had written to the Maharashtra Governor, pointing out that Article 161 of the Constitution grants Governors and the President the authority to pardon or reduce a sentence. In his letter, he had said that the Supreme Court has not found Sanjay Dutt guilty for the 1993 bomb blasts, but only found him guilty of having in his possession a prohibited weapon without licence. He reiterated his stand today.

When asked on what grounds he was seeking pardon for Mr Dutt, Justice Katju said that "public good is one of them, there can be many other considerations like humanitarian considerations for grant of pardon," and added that the order of the President and a Governor is not subject to judiciary review.

Justice Katju also said that he had issued his appeal for Dutt without having interacted or spoken to the actor.

"I have not talked to Sanjay Dutt, I have not contacted him, and he has not approached me. In my first appeal which I issued for pardon, I did it without contacting him," he said.

Speaking out for the first time since the Supreme Court convicted him, 53-year old Dutt had appealed to the media for privacy and said: "…When I am not going for pardon, there is no debate."

An emotional Dutt, who broke down while addressing the media in Mumbai, said he had the highest respect for the court. "This a very, very tough time," he said. "Just let me be in peace till I go in." He said he felt shattered.

He said he loved his country. He also said he would be completing his work commitments.
