    Mumbai: Business Today’s G20 Special Issue is out!     As the G20 president for the year, India has emerged as the driving force for a wide range of issues that need immediate attention from global leaders, who will converge in New Delhi to attend the G20 heads of state and government summit in September. At the summit, India will be looking to build a global consensus on a host of issues under the leadership of prime minister Modi. In that context, the prime minister said in the interview, “The G20 group is being looked at as a ray of hope by the world and the ground for this is being laid during India’s presidency of G20.” He goes on to add that India, by inviting the African Union to the G20 during its presidency, has laid the foundation for inclusivity. He also holds forth on the country’s digital public infrastructure, and that “Technology has helped India achieve targeted welfare delivery.”

    Apart from the prime minister’s interview, the special issue—centred on India’s G20 presidency—also has interviews with G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and Harsh Vardhan Shringla, chief coordinator for India’s G20 presidency. Besides these, the issue includes stories on key takeaways for India Inc. from India’s G20 presidency; how the country is showcasing its digital prowess, such as its digital public infrastructure, to the world; and how India is aiming to foster a global start-up ecosystem, among others.

    Uday Shankar gets appointed as FICCI president

    MUMBAI: Here’s another stripe he’s adding to the numerous ones he has got during his fascinating career. Disney Star India chairperson and Walt Disney Co Asia Pacific president  Uday Shankar will take over as FICCI president–elect for 2020-21  during the lobbying body’s ninety third AGM on 11, 12, and 14 December 2020. He will succeed Apollo Hospitals managing director Sangeeta Reddy. 

    In the process, he will become the first ever media and entertainment industry executive to lead the national chamber . Prior to this he was chairman of FICCI’s media & entertainment committee, apart from being president of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation. 

    Uday currently leads Disney’s direct-to-consumer business in over 30 countries and has been behind the tremendous success Star India has achieved in entertainment and sports broadcasting, apart from the streaming service Disney +Hotstar. 

    Uday has also been a vociferous advocate of the entertainment and broadcasting sector, speaking out at times against regulation which has slowed down the TV ecosystem. He has been at the forefront of landmark initiatives in television broadcasting, such as self-regulation of content and digitisation of the broadcasting sector. He holds an M. Phil in economic history.

    Uday Shankar takes charge as senior vice-president of FICCI

    MUMBAI: Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has elevated Uday Shankar as senior vice president of the apex industry body in the country.

    Shankar had been holding vice-president role at FICCI since 2018 and this is for the first time that Indian media executive would assume the second in command leadership charge of the chamber.

    Shankar is currently chairman and chief executive officer of Star India and president of 21st Century Fox (Asia); he has been given additional charge as chairman of Star and Disney India and president of Walt Disney (Asia), which he will assume charge of new role post takeover of 21st CF by Disney.

    Shankar began his career as a political journalist with The Times of India, and eventually rose to Editor and CEO position at Star News, the first 24-hour news channel in India. He played a prominent role in making Star India one of the largest media & entertainment companies in India.

    He spearheaded the launch of Aaj Tak (2000) and Headlines Today (2003) as Hindi and English news channel respectively while being at the helm of Editor, News Director’s position at TV Today Group.

    Being the chairman of FICCI Media & Entertainment Committee, Shankar has been at the forefront of landmark changes in self-regulation and pushing access for consumers to digitized distribution.

    Shankar holds an M Phil in Economic History from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. He is an avid reader and his knowledge domain transcends from literature to politics, economics, and sports.

    Along with Shankar’s elevation, the chamber has also appointed Apollo Hospitals Group managing director Sangita Reddy as president, Hindustan Unilever’s chairman and managing director Sanjiv Mehta as vice president.

    FICCI Heal 2013 inaugurated with the theme “Sustainable Quality Healthcare”

    New Delhi: FICCI Heal 2013, an annual healthcare conference by FICCI was inaugurated today with theme “Sustainable Quality Healthcare”. The conference being held on 2nd – 3rd September will focus on the challenges by private healthcare sector for affordability and sustainability. The conference purpose is to highlight the issues that have great significance in influencing quality and cost of delivery through hospital planning, infrastructure, operations and innovation in technology and practice. Panellists would also share the insights on the myth that adherence to quality standards will raise the cost. Integrating and mainstreaming AYUSH system of medicine will also be a part of the discussion house.

     

    In this context, two compelling Papers on Costing in Healthcare and on Innovations in Healthcare were released. The Working Paper titled “Universal Health Cover for India: EvolvingaFrameworkfor Healthcare Reimbursement Methodologies” delves into aspects relating to provider reimbursement mechanisms for inpatient care and suggests a framework for tariff determination based on differential cost structures on account of quality, geography and severity of clinical conditions; centrally determined reference tariff rates based on a formula that recognizes relevant costs, quantum of government sponsored patients served; rewards for performance and timely tariff revision.

     

    FICCI also released another Knowledge Paper titled “Reinventing Affordable & Universal Healthcare through Innovation” which looks at the innovation landscape in the country and makes recommendations to translate potential in to successful innovation by creating a curriculum for creativity in education, framework for Industry-Academia engagement in translation research, incentives for the MSME and sharing of risks in innovative entrepreneurial initiatives, increased allocation of funds for investing into innovation, Insurance driven Demands, governance of Intellectual Property and creating an industry framework for innovation.

     

    Ms. Sangita Reddy, Chairperson, FICCI Health Services Committee & ED (Operations), Apollo Hospitals Group,  says, “a combination of improvement in rural infrastructure, innovation and technology initiatives to improve access have the potential to universalize access of healthcare. The need of the hour is to create an environment where public and private ventures can work sustainably towards providing quality care to the people”.

     

    Elaborating on the conference theme, Mr Rajen Padukone, Co-chair, FICCI Health Services Committee explains “there is a need for policies that will promote meaningful collaboration between the private and public sector. The conference will bring together the policymakers and heads of leading healthcare organizations to share opinions and best practices and will aim at generating realistic recommendations on the way forward.”

     

    Expressing his views on the medical technology sector, Dr GSK Velu, Co-chair, FICCI Health Services Committee and MD, Trivitron Healthcare says “Success in India will depend on establishing local and regional operational capabilities and delivering new innovations, low-cost manufacturing network, R&D, and market-specific commercial operations and capabilities.”
