    SCTE India announces its new executive board for the term 2021-2024

    New Delhi: The Society of Cable Telecommunication Engineers (SCTE), India has appointed NXTDIGITAL Limited MD and CEO, Vynsley Fernandes as the honorary chairman, Sandeep Bhargava as the president, and Rahul Nehra as the national secretary.

    The announcement was made at the recently held annual general meeting.

    The new executive has a very aggressive charter for the year 2021 with initiatives like SCTE Academy, SCTE Consulting, SCTE Innovation, and SCTE India Tech TV to help India get the correct technical knowledge and facilitate the impetus in the years to come.

    “I am delighted to join the SCTE family as the Chairman. SCTE India has a significant role to play in Digital India; especially on the back of the rapidly changing technology landscape,” said Fernandes.

    Sandeep Bhargava said, “With data being the new fuel, Skilling and Innovation would play a significant role, and SCTE is right in the center of both.”

    SCTE India is a part of SCTE UK which celebrates its 75th year of existence and defines standards, certification, and innovation in the digital cable and the broadband space.

    NEW DELHI: Reliance Big TV head (DTH Business) Vivek Garg, Network18 Media & Investments Ltd Group chief technology officer Rajat Nigam and GTPL-Hathway Pvt. Ltd chief operating officer Shaji Mathews have come on the governing council of broadband professionals body SCTE India for 2016-17.

    Others include Electronics Sector Skills Council of India CEO N K Mohapatra; Vodafone India executive vice president-corporate affairs and public policy Sandeep Bhargava and PPC Broadband managing mirector–Asia Pacific Gurdeep Singh Bakshi.

    The initiative was taken on the recommendation of SCTE vice president Mike Jones from the United Kingdom and national secretary Rahul Nehra.

    Nehra said, “SCTE stands to play a pivotal role in emerging Digital India from a skilling and innovation perspective and the new governing council will be the defining light of the efforts going forward.”

    Nigam added, “SCTE deserves salutation for driving technology enhancement and culture. Today, innovation is a tradition that needs to be adhered to continue the fast-paced tech journey enhancing user experience.”

    Specific goals for this year include developing technical skills in the digital space, collaborating with the policy makers to fast-track innovation and learning, driving standards in the echo-system, adopting innovation and bringing the best of Asia and Europe to the upcoming SCTE India Awards. The Society has planned to launch an India Broadband Journal which will be released quarterly thought-leader magazine.

    Industry relationships committee chairman Sandeep Bhargava said: “This shall enable focus on the needs of the broadband sector and help build relationships with various stakeholders in the government and industry and create a right policy environment.”

    Founded in 1945, the SCTE’s aim is to raise the standard of broadband engineering in the telecommunications industry. The society particularly concerns with the training and career advancement of technical professionals in the field. Headquartered in Watford (U.K.), the SCTE is a global non-profit organization that is managed by elected volunteers.

    Sahara One Motion Pictures names Sharang Sharma as business head

    MUMBAI: Sahara One Motion Pictures, the movie production and distribution wing of the Sahara Group, has promoted Sharang Sharma, head of acquisition, distribution and movie syndication, as business head. 

    Sharma fills the post that become vacant after COO Sandeep Bhargava quit the company earlier this month. Prior to joining Sahara One Motion Pictures, Sharma was with Sony Pictures Releasing of India Ltd. He reports in to Sahara One Media and Entertainment CEO Shantonu Aditya. 

    Sharma will oversee acquisition as well as syndication deals with both domestic as well as international channels.

    Speaking about his plans, Sharma said, “I’m looking at taking the company to newer heights and aim to make this outfit the most prolific production boutique.”

    Sharma expressed confidence that the forthcoming releases under the banner — which include Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate, Signal and Sandwich (starring Govinda) — would bring in more cash flow just as Hunuman and Malamaal Weekly have done in the recent past.

    Bahl floats movie company, Sandeep Bhargava to head

    MUMBAI: Movies is where moolah is! And everyone wants in on it. TV18 promoter Raghav Bahl is the latest to be bitten by the film business bug. Bahl is floating a separate company to fulfill his big screen plans of a movie production boutique.

    The company will be involved in producing and distributing movies. Although, at this juncture, it is not clear if the company may get into distributing international movies. However, the buzz in the broadcasting industry is that the movie production company will not be restricted at merely producing and distributing but is contemplating at looking into the movie acquisition market as well. 

    Former Sahara One Motion Pictures COO Sandeep Bhargava is tipped to spearhead the movie production house. Bahl will have to compete with likes of the well entrenched long time players such as Yash Chopra’s Yash Raj Films, Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts, Sahara One Motion Pictures, Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV Motion Pictures, Ram Gopal Verma’s The Factory and Rakesh Roshan’s FilmKraft.

    In his movie business ambitions, Bahl joins the likes of Subhash Chandra who earlier betted big on tinsel town with Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, live action-animated Bhagmati and Indo-French production One Dollar Curry. 

    TV18, at present manages four news channels; the English business news channel CNBC-TV18, the Hindi consumer news channel Awaaz, the English news channel CNN-IBN and the Hindi news channel Channel7.

    Indians notch up MipTV success

    MUMBAI: MipTV, the world’s biggest content marketplace, which ended last week in Cannes, proved to be a very successful one for India’s content creators, distributors and aggregators.

    Some 43 production, broadcasting and mobile phone companies jetted their way down to Cannes to keep a tab on content trends in Europe and globally, buy and sell films, series and formats, find co-production partners and schmooze with the world’s most important players in the TV, animation, film and mobile content sweepstakes.
    The change this time around was that TV producers have invested in buying formats as against just broadcasters doing so. “The power has been weighing heavily in the hands of TV channel programming executives who have been behaving in a high handed manner with TV producers ordering them around as if they were serfs and they – the programmers – the fount of all that is creative,” one of the producers was candid enough to say. “Now with us buying formats, we will also be able to have our say. The times have to change. More power has to come to TV producers’ hands.”
    And mobile players from India aggressively scoured the landscape looking to do deals for video. Among these: Reliance Infocomm, Hungama Mobile, and Cellnext Solutions.

    Almost everyone who attended the market from India went back with a smile on their faces. Krishna Durbha Head of Business and Marketing – Reliance Infocomm Ltd., Applications Solutions Group (India), a panelist at a session on Asian markets, received a standing ovation and was spoken of as one of the more eloquent and candid speakers during the conference programme. Says Durbha: “It’s been a major eye opener for us. We are in the content space for the mobile and I got at least half a dozen leads which will lead to positive results.”

    Sahara Motion Pictures, which took a stand for the first time, was so delighted with the response that it has evinced interest in exhibiting in MipCom as well. “MipTV proved a great platform for us for creating business opportunities,” says Sandeep Bhargava, Chief. Operating Officer, Sahara One Motion Pictures. “We get to meet the who’s who of content in the world in one place and get results.”

    Sony Entertainment Television India, which took a stand, too had a rewarding market. Led by Kaushal Modi on the sales and syndication side, and by programming head Anupama Mandloi on acquisition, the content owner had a very busy market.

    WEG India, Eros and Suman – three other companies that have been attending and exhibiting at MipTV and MipCom for several years now – too had a good market. “Both MipCom and MipTV to be honest are great ways for us to meet, greet and service all our clients at one place,” says Vimal Gupta of the UK based distributor Suman Film.

    Zee TV, which was represented by Deblina Chakrabarty, Parul Chatruvedi and digital head Abhijit Saxena, too, made its mark. While Chakrabarty was sizing up opportunites for content acquisition – though she had a fall from the stairs in the Palais des Festivals and was even taken to hospital – Chatturvedi was exploring how India’s largest network could up its syndication revenues. Saxena – like a lone ranger – moved around in the shadows meeting all and sundry trying to further milk the potential of the 60,000 hours or so of the Zee TV content library, which is currently being digitized by IBM. Watch out for action in this space from Saxena as Zee TV chairman Subhash Chandra is himself driving the digital initiative with Saxena as his lieutenant.

    Star India, which used to have a separate stand until a year and a half ago when it was brought under the umbrella of Hong Kong based centralized syndication arm Fortune Star, too had a sizeable presence. Viren Popley, Ravi Menon and Manju Nair were at the forefront of the Star TV charge. Syndication experts however point out that it would be better if Star India’s Hindi content were not subsumed by the larger interests of Fortune Star’s huge Chinese library. A separate stand with a separate identity for Star India would help it further exploit its syndication potential.

    Other broadcasters who made their way to the market included NDTV (represented by KVL Narayan Rao and I.P. “Baj” Bajpai) and Aaj Tak (CEO G Krishnan).

    The buzz this year from the Indian delegation was centered around the production companies. Optimystix, Contiloe, Miditech, Maverick, Clapstem, AIM Television, UTV, ESP Films were amongst those who made waves. ESP is on the verge of signing a huge deal with a European producer for co-producing a new documentary.

    Sorely missed at MipTV were the two other big players Balaji Telefilms and BAG Films, who, are missing out on several opportunities in the global content marketplace. “Agreed they are more than busy in the domestic marketplace,” says a Cannes veteran. “But not being present internationally means that not many people in the world know you at a time when boundaries between nations are dissolving and cultures are beginning to merge. That is a huge opportunity loss.”

    The animation presence at MipTV came in the shape of Maya, Crest, Toonz Animation, Graphiti Multimedia which continued with their efforts to make themselves better understood by the world at large. And in the process snap up some co-production, original IP deals.
